Title: New Member Guide
Post by: Southern Records on July 29, 2014, 07:15:25 PM
Welcome to Southern Winds Weyr.

This guide is designed to help you navigate the site and direct you to the information you want. Joining new places can be a mess and we’re here to help.

     What is Pern?
If we caught your eye, if our advertisement snagged your interest, or you only vaguely know of the setting, don’t worry. We have a guide here that will give you all the relevant setting information not only for canon Pern ( without drowning you in canon stories and spoilers ) as well as how that information is relevant to Southern Winds.
  • New to Pern (

     What is Southern Winds Weyr?
We are a medieval tech, dragon bonding RP set on a planet similar to Earth. Southern Winds takes the books and wipes out nearly all of its history in a decimating event, so little canon information is needed. Our plot is unique; our setting focused on one place in particular where people are struggling to rebuild and survive. We have a mature NC17 rating, or 3-3-3 per RPG-R standards (, where we allow members to write whatever they would like.

Before you register...

     Required Reading
We only have three topics to sink into that are required. They are our Rules (, Plot (, and how we would like members to title their threads as laid out in the Thread Guide ( Southern Winds has a time line and uses liquid time for the present and past - this means you may backdate your threads and create new ones for the present day, but you cannot play in the future as new events are cropping up all the time.

     Settling In
The Cbox does require registration ( any name and a password ) and we encourage you to say hello, poke around the forum, check out some applications ( approved Riders ( & approved Weyrfolk (, and see if the overall feel of Southern Winds suits you. We have a lot of Adoptables too, both player requested ( and ranked (

     Additional, Optional Topics of Interest
Southern Winds offers a lot of informational topics for further setting information and various guides to help you settle in. None of these are required, but they may shine some light on ranks, beasts, and our OOC Extras.

Registration and Character Creation

     Player Account and Character Accounts
Southern Winds uses an Account-Per-Character set up. So when you register, use whatever manner of Player Name you would like to be known with on the board. Your Character Accounts are created by the Staff once your application has been approved.

     Creating Your Character
Our application templates ( are separated by what manner of character you will have ( Dragon Rider, Weyrhandler, Candidate, Crafter, Holder/Drudge ) and lists the explanation and expectation of each type of character. Sample Character applications have also been listed of approved characters. The application thread also lists the required reading, which has already been linked in this guide, but also recommended reading for the creation of your character. Our application process, as well as thread titling, is also explained there. There is a Character Creation Guide ( to help you through your first character.

     Character Restrictions
Southern Winds has no shops, no post requirement, and no OOC or IC requirements to make any manner of unranked character. ( Our Ranked Requirements ( are listed in the rules. ) You may have any color of dragon you wish ( except Gold ) and you may find the list of available dragons in the Clutch Records ( This lists the Birth Dates ( and thus Impression Dates ) of all dragons born after 2557. If you wish to make a dragon older than this ( 32 turns ) then you are free to make up all the relevant information ( Missing Records?! ( ). This applies to Whers as well, which we do not have any clutch records listed for.

     Posting Applications
WIP Character Applications can be posted in the Journals ( and reposted once they are complete. Completed Applications should be posted in the Character Creation ( board. Fill out the application completely ( and always feel free to add more should you wish ).
        After Posting
The Staff will review and read your application. We look at first characters, generally, within 24 hours and will send you a PM regarding them. All character applications will receive a PM, usually with any points we'd like to make or comments we have. You are free to make any manner of character you wish so long as they fit in the setting, and that is what we are reviewing.  If you post more than one character, we will review the first one and the second  will go into a "Queue" until the first has been approved.  Until then, we recommend that you say hello in the cbox, post an introduction (, or check out the recent events listed in the sidebar or Event Forum ( Universal Events ( & Construction Events ( ) to get an idea of where the site story is.

After approval, now what?

     IC Claims
Now that your character is approved, the staff will make the character's subaccount (which you will use to post with them in the RP boards), and fill out the IC Claim threads ( This will add your Rider to the roster, the rankings, allow us to create the custom code for your character name and dragon voice, and keep our face claims updated.

     Post a Plotter
While not required, it is the easiest way to let other members know what sort of interaction you might be looking for. Plotters can use any template you may wish and are all located in the Plots and Schemes ( forum.

     Join an Open Thread
All of our open threads are listed in the bottom, right box of the forum. Feel free to jump into any listed there or create one of your own.

     Looking for Threads Request
Looking for Threads? (
We have a place where you can request rp threads if you’re still unsure where to get started. There’s even an optional form, which is very simple, to help people get an idea of what you’d like to do with your new character. Simply post the request so people know you’re ready to RP!

Southern Winds has a lot to offer, and we in no way expect you to remember it all. If you have any questions and no one is around in the cbox, feel free to post in the Question and Answer ( forum or PM a member of the Staff at the Southern Records (;u=1) account. We're here to help you get settled in and start playing!
