Can’t Beat Gravity

31.2.2591 // 2:45 pm

Discouraged by the Hunter attack earlier in the month, the Holders and Crafters alike are somewhat disgruntled with the current state of the Hall. Work has slowed on the Hold for the moment, with intentions of picking it up again once the proper depth of spring rolls around to banish all the fog and prevent another such catastrophe.

At least, ideally it will.

With that in mind, the Miners have turned their attention toward the newly discovered iron deposit, working on expanding the tunnels and shoring them up in the hopes of finding more of the precious metal. But on this particular day, it seems like the mountain has other ideas…

Who knew the rock above them was less stable than it looked?

Suggested Face Claims

We have a lot of character creation resources listed here. The point of this thread is for people to suggest face claims they think are interesting, pretty, different, neat, etc that they think other people will like or might find perfect for their character.

We do have a couple guidelines for posting in this thread :
* Make sure they're not already claimed here.
* List the first and last name of the suggested claim.
* Include at least one SFW picture of the claim - max width of 500px.

To make a claim from this list, reply here with the linked application.
As with the adoption bank, it's first come, first serve. This means, the first to complete an application and post it in the character creation board with a claim is the one who gets it.

Below, we'll index the suggested claims alphabetically by last name with the supplied image  in a spoiler tag so you can browse.

Kill the Messenger
14.2.2591 // 06AM

It's a nice, quiet, foggy morning. There's no wind and the clouds are sticking to the island like lice on a drudge - and it's not going anywhere soon. As Prairie goes through the routine of landing in front of Mine Hall - the worst happens.

Hunters. And they're oh so happy to see the Riders. Out of the fog and eager for a meal.

Initially, Prairie Riders are going to be the ones targeted. For obvious reasons. As the call goes up, Beach and Jungle will be responding and the giant metal doors of the Hall will be closing. Let's just all hope it's in time. ^_^

Strike It Rich
32.1.2591 // 06:10 pm

While there have been enough small deposits of precious ores and minerals on Fort Island to sustain the barest workings of Craft and Weyr, finding larger veins is still something to be celebrated. The Miners may have been focusing the bulk of their efforts on aiding with the construction of the protective wall around the Hall—and what will eventually be the Hold—but a small contingency has still been working in the utility tunnels slowly burrowing deeper into the mountain. And on this particular day, they’ve stumbled across a thick vein of iron ore, wide and rich and promising a surge of metal for tools, repairs, and maybe even blades, if certain Holder elements manage to snag some of the substance once its been refined…

Most won’t hear this news until late in the evening when those at the Mine Hall gather for dinner, and it will no doubt be the talk of the Hall.

What does this mean?
Rumors will no doubt abound about the repercussions of this discovery—construction on the wall may slow while the Miners explore and harvest the ore. The recent resurgence of Holder interests may be less than thrilled by this prospect, since many are champing at the bit to have their efforts pay off in the form of new homes and space. And in terms of other concerns, will the Miner freely give their ore to the Weyr? Should it be traded for other goods? Do the Holders have any sort of claim on some of it given their efforts at the Hall? Tempers may end up running hot amidst all the excitement, as some will no doubt have certain opinions about what should be done with the iron and resulting steel, not to mention who should benefit from it most.

Backalley Brawl
19.1.2591 // 11:25 pm

There are certainly those who hoped that Southern Winds would be a new start, distancing the Pernese from their sordid past at Fort Hold toward the end of the Pass. Perhaps some even believe that, either through genuine idealism or denial. Nevertheless, many have regarded a return to those old habits as an inevitable occurrence now that the Holders are no longer living in the Weyr—and some have even worked directly toward that end.

Things are slow to pick up, furtive and well-hidden from those who would interfere. So this first small gathering—a brief night of wher fighting in little used tunnels at the back of Mine Hall—is a marked event to those who have been wishing for a little familiarity. A testing of the waters, if you will.

Marks and drink may be few and far between these days, but that’s hardly going to stop anyone from enjoying themselves, is it?

Can my character be involved?
Except for a few instances, most certainly yes! Dragon riders won’t be in attendance, obviously, and proper Holders likely have either not heard about the event, or were apathetic enough not to care about reporting it. Anyone else who would have been involved in the seedy side of the Hold—regardless of background—is a candidate for having had the news whispered to them by some other contact. Former wher fighters and gang members are the most likely attendees, but if it makes logical sense for your character to be there, live your dreams. ^_^

Announcements & Events / New Tags & Eggs
« on: December 13, 2017, 09:06:49 AM »

There be Tags

With the new update to the forum, we have a new tagging system that we're going to be trying out. Rather than listing the Open Threads, and various other important threads, at the bottom of the forum we now have a tag that will be designating them.

Now, there should be a link along the top of the forum that will allow you to both see our tags across the board and search for posts within that respective tag. I.E. If you want to search through the Open Threads we have, you can click on the Open tag and it'll populate a list of all the open threads we currently have.

Spoiler for What it should look like:
Next to the My Messages you can find the Tags link:

Nice display of threads. It'll only show the recently tagged threads until you click on a specific tag.

For now, we're thinking about tagging these specific sort of threads : OOC Announcements, Construction Events, Universal Events, Monthly Overviews, Weyrling Lessons, Specific Wing Events, Candidate Lessons, Crafter Events, and Mine Hall Events.

The tags will only display current events and are meant to help you navigate threads that you can actively participate in or that may actively affect characters, as well as listing OOC threads that have news or interesting things that have happened on the forum.

Monthly Egg Claim

This is a monthly 'event' that we'll be running for people that are active on SWW. There are two different eggs that you can be awarded each month based on your posts for the previous month. It's meant to be something we give you for sticking around and posting. ^_^

The first egg is the Diligence Egg.
Awarded to those that post 50 IC posts in a month. It can be with any number of characters, in any number of threads, events, etc. 50 IC posts in a month is roughly 1 IC post a day then some extras sprinkled here and there.

To claim the Diligence Egg, you simply claim it as you would any other award at the beginning of the month - listing the characters that brought you to your 50 IC goal. No, you don't have to list ALL 50 IC posts. Just the characters that got you there. <3

Example: I want to claim the Diligence egg with Haithen, Meyelthra, and A'yara for December.

Then a staff member will ensure the IC post count hits 50 for the month of December, then you get the egg. :excited: Simple!

Then, when January rolls around we'll check and see if anyone has kept their Diligence egg. This means that if you don't maintain your 50 IC posts in a month, we'll take the egg away.

But don't worry, you can always try for it next month!

The second egg is the Discipline Egg.
This egg is awarded to whomever posts the MOST in one month. With a few stipulations, of course. No one member can win this egg two months in a row, and a staff member can only win this egg every other month.

There is no claiming the Discipline egg, we'll be awarding it at the beginning of the month as we post our Monthly Overview. <3

We hope you gais will be just as excited about these new things as we are. As always, if you have concerns, questions, suggestions - especially regarding tags and if you'd like to see more - be sure to let us know! Post in this thread, hit us up on discord, or feel free to PM the Southern Records account!

It's Time Again...

Just giving a heads up that it's time for the forum software upgrades again. Alahn will be starting them late tonight and probably over into tomorrow; things may break, and we may have to fix them. We're hoping that it will be smoother than he's fearing. 8D In any case, we'll be doing a full site backup beforehand as a precaution, and we'll reply here once the initial updating is done with notes about what it might take him a little more time to fix.

See you on the other side.

Announcements & Events / Regarding Kalestath’s Flight
« on: December 09, 2017, 01:30:00 AM »
Flight Announcemnt

It likely hasn’t gone unnoticed that the Senior Queen’s Flight was removed from the sidebar events, and has not been posted as an official thread. Scheduling issues have delayed this announcement past when we meant to put it up; but in the interest of transparency, we wanted to give some heads up about the situation.

We elected not to host Kalestath’s Flight as an official event because we felt it would be unfairly leading you all on regarding whether, at this current point in time, characters other than S’bok and Neisoth had a chance of winning. For plot purposes, and to ensure that we still have more mutations available for future clutches, they will not be ousted from their position as Weyrleaders—for this turn, at least.

Oriath and Imyth’s Flights—and eventually Minath’s, when she matures—will still be held as open, official events because their situations are a little more flexible. Kalestath’s subsequent Flights will again be hosted as events once we have some more physically mature Black dragons. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

For the purposes of records, Kalestath’s Flight took place beginning in the morning of 5.1.2591, and was won once again by Neisoth.

Skycourser

Commissioned by Beasty, Art by Christina Weinman specifically for SWW

The Basics
These are the largest predatory wherry that Pern has to offer. Growing up to 2M from beak tip to tail, a wingspan up to 4.5M, and can weigh up to 20lbs. Females are the biggest of the species, roughly 25% larger than the males. The Skycourser are a dark brown and white wherry with a hooked beak and curved talons that prey on just about anything smaller than them – fire lizards, other wherry, fish, rabbit, chicken, baby animals of just about any variety. They are opportunistic hunters that were tamed and trained prior to the Pass to provide protection from wild fire lizards and other wherry.

Taming Prior to SWW
They are trained by Coursers, a skilled Beast Crafter who raises a Skycourser from hatching. While they are not telepathic nor empathetic, the Skycoursers can be taught commands much like a wher can and are very attached to the Courser that raises them, that they ‘Imprint’ to as a hatchling. Enough so that should the Courser die, the Skycourser must be put down as no one else will be able to take over the training.

Because Skycoursers are very much 'wild' animals, they do not share handlers --  i.e., a Courser cannot bond to a wher after a Skycourser has imprinted to them, as the territorial wher and Skycourser will fight. The exception to this is that if an individual is already bonded to a wher when their Skycourser imprints, the wherry will grow to adulthood accustomed to the wher and will not fight it. Under no circumstances, however, will a Courser be able to have more than one Skycourser.

Skycoursers, while being trained and once fully trained, wear ‘blinders’. It’s leather headgear, much like a runner’s, that limits their field of view. They are also led around by a harness, much like the straps around a dragon’s body, as they are too big to perch on a Courser once fully grown. A Skycourser that is imprinted will obsessively follow their Courser around and the blinders prevent them from being easily startled. Even so, a Skycourser should be given a wide berth.

Currently
Due to the devastation of the Pass and the lack of necessity, the training and upkeep of Skycourser has been lost. The knowledge and know how exists in the crafthall in records, but there are currently no one in the Hall that has a Skycourser. There are, however, Skycourser on the island. They roost in the mountains and hunt all over the island.

New on the Forum

Given NaNo and the beginning of the holiday season, November was a rather quiet month for SWW. As such, there are no OOC announcements to report for the month! Keep an eye out for some in the next few days, however, regarding Kalestath's Flight this turn and some important character openings.

November just flew by, huh? Between NaNoWriMo, RL responsibilities, and American Thanksgiving, things have been busy and a bit hectic for many OOC. This sort of quietness is pretty typical towards the end of the year with so many seasonal holidays back to back, as well as the end of semester for some of you. Nevertheless, SWW isn't going anywhere! It's been almost four years since we opened now, and we're honored to still have so many people along for the ride. Even if posting is a little slower this time of year, no worries:  as ever, SWW is meant to be a relaxing, fun place.

We've also crossed over in IC time to 2591 too! It's impressive to look back on all the things we've collectively built, given that Southern Winds' IC timeline started midway through 2589. From all of us, we hope the close of 2017 treats you well, and that you'll still be here with us in both the coming year and the new turn. <3

Dragon Details

Name:
Otoloth
Pronounced:
[ OH-toh-loth ]
Color:
Brown
Date of Birth:
33.10.2590 9th Interval.
Place of Birth:
Southern Winds Weyr
Clutch Mother:
Imyth
Clutch Father:
Maelboroth
Measurements:
Mature Length: 30.2M
Mature Height: 7M
Mature Wingspan: 54M

General Appearance...

Much of Otoloth's hide is a deep ash brown, tending more toward a brown than a greyish cast that gives him the soft appearance of suede or treated leather. His coloration is gentle rather than bright or flashy, fairly smooth in appearance. The most notable part of his markings is the long stripe that runs down his body; connected at his nose, there is one that runs along his spine to just above his flanks, and one that spans the underside of his neck and underbelly all the way to the tip of his tail. A deep hickory or walnut color depending on the ambient light, it makes him look almost as though he's been painted with a racing stripe the same color as his claws. Otoloth's wingsails are a reddish cedar, with faintly darker markings near the joints of his wings almost like a wood grain. Throughout, his hide is speckled with subtle specks almost like flecks of mica, and which almost disappear when he's shadowed.

Short in length for a Brown, Otoloth will always be a rather small and narrow creature -- lanky, perhaps. He's tall at the shoulder for a dragon of his size, with long limbs and tail. As a dragonet, he looks like he's been stretched out, but in time he'll grow into these proportions some. His wingspan is longer than average, but he's possessed of narrow sails that will make him very maneuverable and quick for his color -- but never an endurance flyer. With time, his skinniness will smooth out into lithe muscle.

Personality...

Mind Voice: Otoloth's voice isn't smooth, exactly -- there's too much warmth and confidence in it, with a faint roughness to it that sounds friendly rather than threatening. He laughs easily, a low and deep sound that sharpens into an earnest cackle at the jokes he finds funniest. He talks somewhat fast, a low baritone that deepens to a bass when he's angry.

Likes:
Comfort : Otoloth isn't a lazy dragon by any stretch of the imagination; but when it comes to his downtime, he wants to be at ease and comfortable both. He'll fuss over his sleeping couch until he finds just the right spot, or go lay in the grass of the Weyr Bowl if he can find an unoccupied place. He values his comfort and can be downright grouchy if it is disturbed in some fashion.

Having a Family : Not in the sense that he wants to catch a Gold and father children, but that he wants to surround himself and C'bryn with a solid, dependable support structure that goes beyond what would classically be considered the boundaries of friendship. He enjoys having close and lasting relationships with people, and above all spending time with them -- even if that time is just companionable silence in some instances.

Dislikes:
Delays : This Brown is the sort of person that would have something scheduled for every hour of every day if left to his own devices -- and that kind of busy schedule suits him, though he does understand that allotting time to relax or decompress is necessary for himself and C'bryn. Even so, he dislikes having his schedule delayed or put off for any reason, and people who show up late or finish work slowly will ever get on his nerves.

Broken Promises : To Otoloth, everyone's word is binding. If you tell him you're going to do something or not, you'd better stick to it, or he's going to give you a piece of his mind. He's inflexible in this, not understanding that sometimes, people might have very good reasons to break promises.

Strengths:

* CHARISMATIC : Otoloth is a charmer. Not in an overly flirtatious sense -- except, teasingly, to C'bryn -- but he's warm, engaging, dependable, and has a silver enough tongue to smooth over all but the most heinous of faux pas he might ever commit… not that he's prone to committing them anyway. Otoloth inherently understands how to make others like him, how to appeal to their generosity or better nature, or tone things down if he's dealing with someone more serious. Underneath it all, he's a very positive and supportive dragon, and believes that everyone has useful talents even if they aren't readily apparent.

* TAKES CHARGE : Perhaps it's just coincidence. Perhaps it was one of the things that drew him to her in the first place. But Otoloth is every bit the authoritative, confident order-giver C'bryn seems to like. That's not to say that this Brown throws his weight around or thinks he should be heeded just because of his color. He knows he'll have to earn the respect of others and prove himself to be the leader he knows he is:  but that's a challenge he'll happily rise to and fully expects himself to surpass.

Weaknesses:

* PEDANTIC : Otoloth believes whole-heartedly in the rules. He has, perhaps, too much good faith in those that made them in the first place, as he believes that such restrictions would have been bucked against and changed already if they weren't satisfactory to everyone. As such, he will resist rebelling himself for every reason but the best ones. Similarly, he relishes a chance to show off his learning and knowledge, which will no doubt seem insufferable and presumptuous to some. This Brown can come across as a bit of a know-it-all.

* OVERBEARING : With all the other facets of his personality, this dragon can unintentionally push others to the wayside if they don't go toe to toe with him, are slower, or simply don’t make it obvious that they want to share the spotlight with him. Otoloth thinks fast, moves fast, and will move like a whirlwind through situations, dictating actions and giving out orders, assuming that he knows best and others would argue with him if they disagreed. He won't hold it against anyone who objects, as he thinks feedback will only improve his leadership -- and Otoloth is far from a tyrant -- but he may inadvertently bruise some feelings of the shyer or more submissive at heart.

We've got another Hatching coming up soon, as well as some other fun events planned for the future -- and we're almost about to embark on a new IC year! We've come along way since our timeline began midway through 2589, and we couldn't have done it without you.

We hope November gets a bit easier for everyone, though we know the upcoming holiday season can be rough too. Even if you need to step away for a little bit to deal with RL, we'll always be happy to have you back. And thank you for bearing with us during our own busy schedules. Take care, all!

Rider Assignments / Reserve Wingriders

A Note on Disabled and Old Riders in Wings

This thread provides another update to provide some information about a unique aspect of rider life. It's not something that was covered very in depth in the books, either with regard to older riders or those who have developed disabilities. But they do exist! So on Southern Winds we've come up with a system as to what we do with rider pairs (either dragon or rider or both) who can no longer participate completely in Wing activities for one reason or another.

Now there will always been exceptions -- B'lye is a "disabled" rider and a Wingsecond, and D'zelis Weyrlingmaster. But the majority of riders with some sort of disability, either from threadfall, age, or some either reason, will be absorbed into Wings. Their official title is that of Reserve Wingrider, to reflect that they still do participate in Wing tasks despite their status.

At Southern Winds, all four Wings will have an amount of disabled rider pairs within their ranks. Prairie is well set up for such rider pairs, and therefore will have the most. Mountain, as always, will have the least. They are listed separately within their respective Wing threads for easier identification, and riders in this group do not count toward the total color spread for their Wing.

As always, what work they're tasked with and how much they do will be discussed between Wingleaders/Wingseconds and each rider pair individually, depending on the extent and nature of their disability. It can be anything from cleaning kills in Jungle, fish preparation in Beach and Prairie, and organisational work in Mountain, or other assignments as required.

It should also be noted that recuperating or pregnant riders may temporarily be assigned these duties until they are healed or have given birth.

Adding an addendum since it was something we didn't think to mention before. ^_^ For the Premium Poster awards, if you write a post that qualifies, please note the wordcount in the post, or when you post in the Award Guide to claim the egg. We won't be checking wordcounts on posts unless you draw our attention to them. Please only post in the Award Guide to claim them, as we might miss messages in Discord or the cbox.

Rock the Boat

6.10.2590 // 10:20 am
Since discovering the existence of sharpfish midway through Month 8, the Fishers and the Wings that assist them have been catching any of the creatures they can to help better feed the Weyr. Despite some dissent amongst the Pernese population, the Weyr Leadership’s official stance has been that these are a source of food. Particularly as the sharpfish still do not show any signs of telepathic or empathetic ability, they are regarded at large as just another type of large animal that can provide food.

These creatures have already developed a reputation as difficult to catch and kill—and ferocious when they are snared. But on this particular morning, the sharpfish retaliate against the boats that have been preying upon them.

What does this mean?
Previously, the sharpfish have only been caught singularly or in pairs, though they’ve been sighted out to sea in slightly larger groups. Today, however, ten or so take it upon themselves to attack the Fishers out in the Cove. This is a sign not only that the creatures have grown more aggressive with time, but also that they are capable of working together in larger numbers.

This was previously unrevealed since we wanted to keep it under wraps for this event, but we’re also adding yet another award egg!

Ocean Survivor ||
This award is granted for participating in a Sharpfish attack via an IC post.

Beach Wing & Prairie Wing
At the time the attack starts, only Beach Wing is aiding the Fishers, with the smaller colors generally closer to the beach and the larger dragons. However, Prairie Wing will be pulled from their dragon drills to assist in dealing with the problem; was with Beach, Bronzes, Browns, and larger Blues will be directed to help fend off the creatures. Smaller Blues and Greens will be tasked with getting as many of the Fishers and their boats back to shore as possible.

Weyrfolk, Crafters & Candidates
The Fishers will obviously be involved in this event, as will any weyrfolk or Candidates that are currently helping them with their tasks. Any other Crafters currently in the Bowl—such as the Herders and Farmers—will likely also come running to aid their fellows. Healers will also be sent for since some people and dragons will suffer bites and other injuries from the sharpfish.

Character Creation / Member NPC Guide
« on: October 05, 2017, 01:44:05 PM »
Rules for Member NPCs

With the advent of our first pre-SWW past event, we’re now also unveiling a new feature—member NPCs.

In contrast with regular characters that require a full app, member NPCs (or MNPCs) are side characters that require only a shortened, simplified version of our application to be played. They can include individuals for past events specifically for that event, characters that are deceased at the current date on Southern Winds, or people who you want to play for extra flavor in a thread, but don’t necessarily want to put up for adoption:  such as young children related to one of your PCs.

Rather than create separate character profiles for each MNPC, we will create one MNPC account per player upon request. This will ensure that each individual member can curate their own posts, but without creating a large amount of superfluous character accounts. Each one will be labeled “[Your Name]’s MNPCs” according to who they belong to; thus, for example, “SirAlahn’s MNPCs”. If you haven't checked into an event with an MNPC, please PM Southern Records or Weyrhandler if you would like an account set up.

This is not meant as a way to circumvent our character approval process; as such, MNPCs carry the same restrictions as other characters—no HADs, dragonless riders, or the like—and also have a few accompanying rules of their own. We’ve put these limits in place to allow you all the greatest amount of flexibility with potential MNPCs you want to explore, while keeping it fair for everyone.

MNPC Restrictions
  • MNPCs cannot be characters currently up for adoption; and, once they have been played as an MNPC, they can never be put up for adoption.
  • If you wish to start playing an MNPC like an official character, they will need to be apped as one. Only you—the player who started playing them as an MNPC—can app them as an official character.
  • MNPCs cannot be Craftmasters or members of Weyrleadership or Hold leadership.
  • Likewise, they cannot be part of an exclusive character group, such as Masters in an established Craft or Senior Journeymen in a Hall-less Craft. They cannot take a selective position that an actual PC could occupy.
  • Outside of official past events, an individual MNPC can only be involved in one thread at a time. If you wish to include them in another thread, the previous thread will need to be closed first.
  • Slain MNPCs will not count toward the “Harbinger of Death” award for killing a character, nor any other egg award.
  • MNPCs cannot use face claims or play bys, as we want to leave them available for officially apped characters.
  • MNPCs also cannot claim creatures from the bank, or request them from other members on the site.
  • Each member is in charge of keeping track of their MNPCs, as the staff will not be doing so. We'd suggest doing so in your plotter, tracker, or otherwise in the Journals board.

MNPC Post Format

Posts with MNPC accounts will be formatted a little differently than regular character posts. Each MNPC post will begin with a copy of the truncated app for the character being played, so that it’s easier for other players to keep track of which character is being used in which post. It will be followed by a horizontal rule break—[*hr] without the *—and then the actual post itself. The shortened character app will be enclosed in [*mnpc][*/mnpc] custom BBCode. You can find an example of this format and the code to replicate it below.

A Guide to Events in Southern Winds' Past

With the advent of our past Threadfall event, we're introducing the occasional sitewide event that takes place in the setting's past. These are meant to be a fun addition to building the world of SWW, by giving players a chance to explore the events of the 9th Pass as well as developing Southern Winds' future. Since they have a slightly different format, and are an entirely new facet of the site, we thought it pertinent to include a little FAQ about how these events work and how they impact the site and your characters. Please let us know if you have other questions that aren't answered here!

How does this affect the current timeline?
Though these events take place in the past -- with the turn noted in the title of the IC thread -- they also mark movement in the current timeline. For example, our first Threadfall event is dated 32.09. While it takes place in 2576, it also means that you can now post with your characters up to 32.09.2590 just as any normal event would.

Do these events affect SWW canon?
Yes! These events, and everything that happens within them, is canonical on SWW. As such, please bear in mind whether or not your character(s) would reasonably be able to participate in them given their own history. But, this also means that there's no surprises in store; these events are pretty much "what you see is what you get", beyond the occasional injury we might inflict.

What characters can I participate in these events with?
Any of your currently approved characters are eligible, provided that it makes sense with their history that they could participate in a given event. With this first one, we're also introducing our Member NPC system where you can create a character with a much shorter application specifically for use in the event. You can click the link to read our guide and restrictions on MNPCs.

How often will there be past events? What will they be about?
Right now, we're intending to do one every few IC months so that they don't dominate the advancement of the plot. They'll be about something different every time, unless there are repeat events members would like, such as Threadfalls. If you have an idea for something you think would be a neat past event, feel free to post it in our Event Suggestions and Input thread. Or, if it's something you think would benefit from being a surprise, PM Southern Records or Weyrhandler. We'd love to hear your ideas!

Name:
Saebrith
Pronounced:
[ SAY-bryth ]
Color:
Blue
Date of Birth:

Place of Birth:
Southern Winds Weyr
Clutch Mother:
Oriath
Clutch Father:
Leremith
Measurements:
Mature Length: 28.3M
Mature Height: 5.66M
Mature Wingspan: 47M

General Appearance...

Eye-catching and bright from the moment he hatches, Saebrith seemed almost born of the sea itself. His hide, bearing ripples of light that span from his tail along his underbelly, limbs, and his neck and nose, resembles nothing more so than the play of the sun on the tropical water around Fort Island -- the top of his spine, face, and his headknobs so like the way the water darkens where the continental shelf falls away into deep ocean. The markings almost seem to shift in the light, sparkling like light on waves. His wingsails are dark, much like the gradient on his spine, but bear subtle marks that scintillate in daylight.

In terms of measurements, Saebrith is average in every way. Neither particularly large nor particularly small for a Blue, he can be given over to either stockiness or sleekness depending on what skills he and his rider hone the most. He loses and gains muscle very easily, meaning a life of constant training would be best for him -- even outside of rider expectations -- so that he's not given over to being a little thicker of body. Fairly fast and maneuverable both, Saebrith can be a skilled jack of all trades without meaningfully sacrificing any one talent. His one downfall will be his natural tendency to gain weight if his exercise ever lapses or he and Droissa are not as disciplined as they should be.

Personality...

Mind Voice: Saebrith's voice seems to ebb and flow like the tide, fading in and out of volume. He tends to either start soft and get louder if he grows more excited about a topic, or trail off in a rambling sort of way if he loses his train of thought or realizes someone isn't listening. It gives his laughter a peculiar quality as well. Overall, his voice is somewhat breathy, like water rasping on sand.

Likes:
Sunrise : Particularly over the sea. Saebrith finds the slow change of colors fascinating, and all the more so with how it differs depending on the weather. He'll always enjoy being up early enough to watch the sun creep up over the horizon -- especially since it is usually a time of peace and quiet before the entirety of the Weyr is awake.

Talking : Where Droissa is more withdrawn, Saebrith enjoys striking up conversations with all and sundry. However, he doesn't always have to be an active participant in a conversation:  he's just as happy to casually eavesdrop or just lend an ear while someone rambles about something they're interested in. He just likes knowing what other people think -- about everything.

Dislikes:
Being Ignored : Something about it just flips a switch inside him, making this normally mild-mannered Blue waspish. It's different if you just don't hear him, but being purposefully ignored genuinely makes him angry. It's even worse when someone writes him and his rider off or patronizes them at the same time.

Self-depreciation : If there's one thing he won't stand for, it's someone selling themselves short -- especially and most keenly, Droissa. Her humility may confuse him a bit at first, but in time he'll come to love it about her. That being said, if her thoughts ever stray toward a spiraling lack of confidence, he will be quick to nudge her back on the right path and prove to her just how amazing he thinks she is.

Strengths:

* TRANQUIL : Saebrith is not a dragon that is easily ruffled. It's not to say that he's lacking in empathy, but rather he's not prone to panic, anxiety, or cynicism. He firmly believes things will turn out for the best, so long as he and Dro are willing to put in the work to make that faith turn out true. He's as grounded and poised as she is, even during emergencies; for all that, he's also not impatient by nature, which may challenge his rider's need to always be occupied. Saebrith agrees there's a time for work, but what is life without quiet moments of calm too? It seems a thing worth protecting, to him.

* MATURE : This Blue may have his playful moments, but he embodies his color's reputation for stability and calm much more than its mischievous one. Even from the moment he hatches, Saebrith will be a remarkably put-together creature, able to understand things that would otherwise seem beyond him given his age and experience -- or lackthereof. He's not stuffy, but he inherently grasps how the world works and that everything has its causes and consequences. By the same token, he's fairly liberal and lacking in judgment because he knows what is right for one person may easily be wrong for another.

Weaknesses:

* COMPETITIVE : Much like his rider, Saebrith wants to make sure that he's putting his best efforts forward to whatever task he's assigned. But more than this, he's effortlessly swayed into rivalries -- though not malicious ones -- and any kind of assignment or game that pits his skills against another's. This drive for excellence won't make him a task master, but it's the one thing he'll be easily distracted by. If someone wants to manipulate him, all they have to prelude it with is, "I dare you."

* PROUD : This Blue is not content to let all the limelight shine on someone else. He sees it as his duty to make sure that Droissa's humility doesn't mean she isn't recognized for her achievements. If she -- and he, as they are firmly a pair -- do something that warrants accolade and they don't get it, Saebrith will go so far as to speak out of turn to make sure that they are. They might not always be the very best at every single thing, but by Faranth he'll make sure others know about the things they are good at.

Member Info...

Anything Else:
Less flighty and mercurial than some other Blues, Saebrith will be less inclined to chase for Flights if it is something that Droissa is not in the mood for on a given day, or she finds a particular situation objectionable. It is easier for him to deny that Flight Lust than it might be for some other dragons.

We hope you like him!

We here at SWW love feedback. Let us know what we're doing right, what we're doing wrong, what you'd like to see more of, less of, or anything else!

Much like August was, September has been a great month for SWW as well. We started it off with the Touching and Rider's Bet, and are now closing it out with Oriath's Hatching! We've made some more housekeeping updates as well as added some new information to the site, and we have even more exciting things planned for the future! Such as that mysterious event that will be taking place next week...

There's been a slight hiccup in terms of advertising and topsite tracking, as the previous host for several of them went under and now redirects to malware. We lost Pern Universe and The Weyr Directory, but we'll be keeping the award egg for the former in active members' signatures that were around while it existed. Pernese Online got reset in the middle of the month for the same reason, but it has a new version on a new host. Like Gift of Dragons, it now allows for rating and comments. We'd appreciate any of you who feel like rating us there, but this is by no means mandatory.

As a side note, these sites have a reset date on the 25th for (GoD) and 27th for (PO), so the cutoff for voting will be a little wonky for those. Just like always, we appreciate everyone's votes, since it keeps others aware that we're active and helps us pull in new members! Despite everything, we came in first place on Gift of Dragons before their September cutoff.

We hope October treats you well, and that you'll continue to join us for future events.

Brown Riders / Re: C'bryn [ 11.07.2567 / Brown Weyrling ]

Flit Details

Name:
Brisk
Pronounced:
Like the word
Color:
Green.
Date of Birth:
06.08.2590 9th Interval.
Place of Birth:
Southern Winds Weyr

General Appearance...

What you see is what you get with this flit. Her nose is a pale, almost white green that leaches across her jaw and around her eye ridges, all the way to the tips of her headknobs. From there, her main body is a light green shade, blending the the same pale green of her face for her underbelly and decorating her tail with pale strips of the same. The darkest part of her is her wingsails, a deep forest green that is a stark contrast to the rest of her, and throughout her hide are light striations as if someone took a brush and stroked her as she was hatching.

Appearance aside, she is not a flit that pushes to be seen. As small as they come and perfectly suited for flitting about unnoticed, her preferred perch is Cabryn's shoulder – preferably close enough to her hair so as to really bury herself in the background. While an undeniably sweet firelizard, there is no mistaking her for anyone else’s… when you finally notice her, that is.

Personality...

Mind Voice: This firelizard has a very demure mental voice. It’s not intrusive, it’s simply there. She has an odd way of making you understand things, and guides you more than instructs you when she’s trying to get a message across. She is quite in tune with Cabryn’s feelings, and will only ever get aggressive when Cabryn, or someone close to her is in trouble.

Likes:

Children:- Cabryn's in particular but she'll always enjoy the company of younglings, be they human or otherwise. It doesn't matter what the task. If it involves children, she will commit to it 100 percent. It'll be very easy to get this firelizard to leave her side once Cabryn clicks onto the enjoyment she gets from any interaction with children she can get – regardless of the amount of time she is required to attend to them.

Learning:- It doesn't have to be something she herself learns, and to be honest her memory doesn't last long enough for most things to stick… which means lessons that repeat are just as exciting as brand new ones. She's going to want to be attending every one of her candidate classes when they happen, a trait that will extend to weyrling classes should Cabryn impress or Weaver classes should she return to that. If a lesson asks that she not be present, she'll go and find her own – preferably with one of Cabtyn's children. There are set times in a day where she is guaranteed “class”, and this flit is going to make the most of it. Her enjoyment does peak when she is able to learn something unique to her. A new skill, even just a trick that gets reinforced every few weeks will be loved immensely.

One on One Time For all she enjoys being out in the midst of things, this flit adores those moments when it's just herself and Cabryn. She's not going to go and get cranky when and if this time is interrupted, but there is a definite mood change when she is able to just exist with Cabryn. Bonus points if it includes a bit of solo training.

Dislikes:

Upset Cabryn: While she can definitely control her own actions so as not to do anything to cause a negative emotion in Cabryn, she is not able to have much of an influence on the outside factors that may have an affect on her bonded. Pain. Fear. Insecurity. Anger. These are just some feelings that this flit isn't fussed about. However, instead of disappearing when she senses any of these things, this flit’s attentiveness will increase. She will work increasingly to try and bring about a happier mood, and can become irritating in her persistence. Though she will make herself scarce should Cabryn request it.

Cruelty: There is no such thing as necessary cruelty and the sight of it is enough to cause this placid flit to lash out herself. If she can't remove the inflictor of what action she has deemed “cruel”, she will do her best to get the victim out of the way or at the very least comfort them until they are safe, or can be brought to safety. Cabryn will be instrumental in developing this trait, as her own sense of right and wrong will be mirrored closely by this little green, almost as soon as she has hatched.

Fleeing: Since she has a highly protective instinct, this green will resent any triggering of a “flight” response. While not invulnerable to the instinctive reaction to danger, she will attempt to ignore it until she knows the ones she is with are safe. There is little loathed more than when she can't push down her own fear and flees a scene before her self-proclaimed charges are safe… charges that usually consist of Cabryn and her children, but can extend to flitters, or anyone Cabryn has shown affection towards in the events leading up to the situation that caused her danger response to rear its unwanted head.

Name:
Bahkylith
Pronounced:
[ BAWK-ill-ith ]
Color:
Green
Date of Birth:
25.09.2590 9th Interval.
Place of Birth:
Southern Winds Weyr
Clutch Mother:
Oriath
Clutch Father:
Leremith
Measurements:
Mature Length: 21.8M
Mature Height: 3.9M
Mature Wingspan: 36.2M

General Appearance...

Overall, there is very little by way of variation in Bahkylith's coloration. With thin, subtle striations and a shininess to her skin that makes her look like a piece of crystal or polished stone, she's a pleasant jade color over the bulk of her. Her underbelly, the underside of her jaw, and the bones of her wings are more of a wintergreen in hue, and her claws are the color of sage. Bahkylith's wingsails are much the same bright jade or tea green as the rest of her body, with more faint striations and mottling that give her all the more appearance of being cut from stone.

She's fairly small for a Green, never destined to be big-boned or even close to rivaling a Blue in size. She's shorter at the shoulder than is average for a dragon of her length, but her wingspan is more proportional in nature. Bahkylith will ever be more built for speed, but her training will make her an all-round jacqueline-of-all-trades rather than one specifically built for agility or endurance.

Personality...

Mind Voice: Bahkylith's voice is sweet and bright, like the warmth of sunshine on a pleasant spring day. She's very expressive with her vocalizations as well, trilling and cooing when she's in a good mood and huffing or even hissing when she's not.

Likes:
Flowers : They are few and far between, but Bahkylith will love when it's time for the crops in the Weyr Bowl to bloom. She'll forever be sad that the jungle is too dangerous to venture into, because she'd really like to see what the ones in there look like.

Helping : The task you give her doesn't have to be complicated, but Bahkylith likes feeling as though she's being helpful. She has a sweet desire to make sure other people are taken care of, and this includes doing favors for them.

Dislikes:
Smaller Creatures : She's afraid of stepping on them or otherwise hurting them. To that end, Bahkyith will avoid babies, dragonets, wherlings, and any sort of smaller animals once she's big enough to do damage. It makes her unhappy, since she thinks they're adorable and just wants to love on them, but even a small dragon is rather large and can inadvertently hurt tinier beings.

Prolonged Silences : Bahkylith will chatter away to fill them, because she feels like they're always inevitably awkward. She'll happily talk about nothing rather than let them stretch onward any longer than necessary.

Strengths:

* UNCONDITIONALLY ENCOURAGING : Bahkylith believes wholeheartedly that anyone can do anything they set their mind to, but no one will receive her support more than Thiis. Her rider's habit of self-hate won't alienate Bakhylith as it might another dragon; rather, she will gently guide her bonded to improve herself because she wants to rather than to make up for any perceived shortcomings. Supportive and nurturing, she'll do her best to make sure that Thiis becomes the best person she can be without always feeling like she has to be everything to everyone.

* FORTHCOMING : This dragon is not one to bottle up her emotions, and she would much rather deal with disagreements or hurts up front, without letting them stew and fester. In that vein, she will encourage Thiis to do the same, and will quietly if insistently call her out when she says she's fine and actually isn't.

Weaknesses:

* SLOW : Bahkylith tries her best when it comes to new lessons, concepts or drills, but she just doesn't learn quickly. She'll rely on Thiis to explain things to her over and over again, as well as anyone else she befriends, and will be confused and hurt if someone isn't suitably patient with her. She also has a short memory even for a dragon, quickly forgetting slights or mistakes. She doesn't hold a grudge simply because she can't remember enough to do so.

* MEANDERING : While well-meaning, this Green doesn't have a good concept of being on time. In part because of her poor memory, time in general is somewhat fuzzy to her, and keeping to any sort of deadline will be difficult for her. Having an in-grained routine maintained over turns will help with this, but any change to it will put her back to square one. She's a bit easily distracted to boot, and enjoys taking the scenic but slower route through life to enjoy the simple things. Bahkylith is never in a rush, and will rely on Thiis to make sure they are where they need to be, when they need to be.

SWW Award Expansion

We all know how much everyone covets the award eggs, so we've added a few more! These ones are handed out to those lovely members who take the time to host a clutch of adoptable creatures for other players, be they flits or whers. We haven't had any member-hosted wher clutches yet, but those who have done so with firelizards will already find the appropriate egg in their signature. (Or should. Let us know if we've missed you!)

These have been added to the SWW AWard Guide listing too. As always, let us know there if you've qualified for an award but haven't received it! We do our best to remember to hand them out as players qualify, but if we've missed one, we promise it's not intentional.

Egg Basket [ Flits ] ||
This award is given to a member for hosting and distributing eggs from a firelizard clutch for other players.

Egg Basket [ Whers ] ||
