Enemies / A dragonrider brother
« on: August 10, 2018, 04:20:47 PM »
Kyrrin // Wherhandler/Wherfighter

About the Character: Kyrin hates dragonriders, they've caused a lot of the problems in her life. She'd be quite happy if the Weyr buggered off. Unfortunately they're not going to do that and they're still close enough that she sees far too many dragons for her liking.

Wanted ICly: Tharik, Brother, Born: 2561, Impressed to Dragonth: 2575.

Wanted OOCly: For Kyrrin to be presented with the fact that her brother survived since she's written him off. No matter how he might feel, she's going to hate him because of what he is. Whether that changes or not - who knows. I'm wanting to explore just how deeply her hatred runs and whether it's something that could be changed.
Kyrrin doesn't know the honourific or the dragons name or colour. She refused to stay in the room when the news came of the hatching so the choice is yours.

Kyrrinsks Run

18.05.2591 / 23:00

Kyrrin couldn't care less about what is 'proper' so she enjoys holding free runs and making sure the holders know about it. Kyrrinsk has been moody for most of the day and Kyrrin dutifully put her notice up yesterday. It's now late at night and they're both hoping for a good turn out.

Since both of them like a good fight, Kyrrinsk is a force catch. If they want her they'll have to show that they are good enough to deserve her. The only way to do that is to be stronger, faster and fitter for the night.

OOC I'll randomise the winner from all the participants.

Your Reflection...

Appearance:

She wears her hair long and braided back so it doesn't get in the way, but she often adds strands of thread and beads to add some colour. She tends towards the usual attire of breeches even when not on duty, it's just too awkward to get astride Allieth while wearing a dress that she's stopped trying. She does like colour though and will decorate her riding gear with as much ribbon or other adornments as she can acquire.
She never grew very tall, which has been a source of much frustration (she's secretly very glad she impressed a green). At just under five foot and with a slim build she looks like a stiff breeze could knock her over, although appearances are deceiving as she has the wiry strength all dragonriders acquire from years of flying and caring for a dragon.

Response to 9th Pass Catastrophe: She hates how close they came to losing everything, but in the end they survived and they can keep on surviving. No matter how much danger seems to be lurking on the island.

Response to dragon colour mutations: The weyrleader is doing fine, no different from any of the bronzerider weyrleaders in how things happen at the level of the weyr she works at. As for the blacks, well, they're like bronzes, so she's not too bothered, but the reds might be a problem, they're much more like her own Allieth and who knows what will happen when they're mature.

Who are you...

Likes:

Family - She's the youngest child and she loves all her siblings, and their children. She's especially fond of her two rider brothers (probably because they just understand things sometimes).

Woodworking - She's not very good at it, but it brings back good memories from when she was small and her father tried to teach her.

Dancing - Be it in her weyr with nobody but Allieth to see or around a bonfire at a party, she's always good for a dance or two.

Dislikes:

Whermeat - There's just something wrong with using it as meat, she'll stick to fish when she has the choice.

Violence - Surely fighting is the absolute last resort? She hates how some peoples first response is to start punching without even trying to talk things through.

Being overlooked - Just because she's small of stature people think she's not up to helping with things. She can haul firestone around, she's not weak!

Strengths:

* INTELLIGENT: She's quick to think of a witty answer, however she really shines when given puzzles and games. She can work her way through a problem quicker than many other people.

* CHEERFUL: There's not much that can rock her boat, even in the face of thread, hunters, and other disasters she'll have a smile and a kind word ready.

* ENERGETIC: Always on the go, it's not unusual to see Z'nel bouncing into a room or dashing from place to place, while it can be hard to dodge, she's always game to just go fetch things or just go deliver a message.

* ATTRACTIVE: She escaped thread without any real injuries and now it's finished theres that extra time to make sure she's looking her best. She's not exactly vain, but she does prefer to double check her appearance before she leaves her weyr in the morning. And it certainly seems to work as she does notice heads turn when she passes.

* LOYAL: Once you're a friend, then she'll defend you as she would a member of her family.

Weaknesses:

* FORGETFUL: It's the small things, she can never remember where she put things... the harness repairs, that spoon she was trying to carve, the bowl she borrowed from the kitchen...

* SYMPATHETIC: To be sure a small amount of this is no bad thing but too much can lead to her forgoing her own duties to try and help somebody else.

* SIZE: She's small and while there's definitely muscle there, she just can't seem to bulk out and she sometimes gets very tired of being overlooked because people assume she's not able to physically help with things.

* PROUD: She's impressed a dragon, survived thread, has a daughter, is a good wingrider... she is, so she thinks, justifiably proud of her achievements and while she won't brag outright, if you ask she'll happily tell you about them and expect you to agree.

* COMPETATIVE: They're both small, sometimes they just have to do something to be noticed so they don't fade into the background.

Describe Yourself:

* POLITE: It doesn't hurt and costs nothing to be polite.

* EASY GOING: You've got to do a lot to get on her bad side, she prefers to see the best in everybody and will just ignore insults and snide comments because they aren't worth getting upset over.

* GRACEFUL: With a good sense of balance and good flexibility she's almost never caught flat footed and seems to glide around at times (when she's not bouncing)

* AFFECTIONATE: She enjoys touch, be it a consoling hug for a friend, tackling her family, or curling up with a mate after her dragons flight. She's still looking for a permanent mate who's just right for her.

* EMOTIONAL: She gets invested into anything and everything and doesn't hide her feelings, it's not unusual to see Z'nel burst into tears, working out whether they are happy or sad tears is the next problem.

The Magic Touch:
Her not very good wood carvings have a habit of appearing in the most random places.

Tell us a story...

* 2562, 0 Zikinel is born.

* 2563-2564, 1-2 As the youngest in the family Zikinel is spoilt a fair bit by her elder siblings, she'd be amused if she could actually remember that far back.

* 2565, 3 One of her brothers has a shiny new thing. Soft and gold and cute and Zikinel wants one. She's somewhat put out that her parents tell her she can't have her own firelizard until she's at least 10. That's ages away.

* 2566-2568, 4-6 Beside continuing to pester her parents for a firelizard of her own Zikinel is vaguely aware that the hold which is near the weyr is growing more crowded, but it isn't that much of a concern at that age.

* 2569, 7 Zatainal, no, Z'tai, has an even bigger dragon now and Zikinels wish list gets a whole lot bigger as she refuses to accept that her parents can't just give her a dragon.

* 2570, 8 This time she is noticing the Hold changing, it's so crowded when they visit it feels like there's no room left, and she doesn't like the feeling in the air, neither does anyone else because there is lots of shouting that she tries to avoid. Eventually she just refuses to go down to the hold, staying at the weyr where it feels safer.

* 2571, 9 High Reaches Weyr falls. She only really remembers the panic. Father had grabbed her and then it was just a lot of running around before Z'tai (maybe, it was a bronze dragon, that much she remembers clearly) bundled her onto his back for the trip to Fort. She cried when they found the rest of the family and refused to leave mothers side for several days.

* 2572-2573, 10-11 They spend a while finding somewhere else to live, Fort is more crowded than High Reaches was given that it's now the only weyr, they're lucky their father has a good craft.

* 2574, 12 Her parents surprise her when they give her a firelizard egg just before her birthing day. She barely leaves the room while it's warming near the hearth and after it breaks shell she spends days wandering round crooning at her shoulder where the bronze is wrapped like a shiny scarf. She names him Reach, to remember her old home.

* 2575, 13 She's searched. Finally!

* 2576, 14 A disappointing year. Her dragon doesn't hatch despite attending several clutches. She's ever the optimist though and refuses to even think about not standing.

* 2577, 15 Her brother Zarknar impresses and becomes Z'nar, she's not jealous, really, she's not. She's still waiting for her dragon.

* 2578, 16 She's stuck between not believing she's impressed and just wanting to curl up with her dragon whenever she can. Father gives her a bracelet to commemorate it and she declares that she won't take it off. Ever. Allieth decides after being introduced to Z'tai and Z'nar that her name is Z'nel and Zikinel accepts the change with a grin - she'll do whatever her little green wants because she is perfect.

* 2579, 17 Allieths first flight is won by a female blue rider from one of the other weyrling classes that is around the same age as Alliath and she couldn't be happier as they remain weyrmates.

* 2580, 18 Graduation into fighting wings. It's a big change but they're up to the challenge, managing to avoid any major injuries in the first few months of being a fully fledged rider. The only bad time in the year is splitting up with her weyrmate, but it is at least an amicable split.

* 2581, 19 K'nel hasn't been feeling too well, but hadn't realised just how out of sorts she was until they almost get lost between when returning to the weyr from a near miss during threadfall, their jump back to the weyr leaving them several dragonlengths out of place and nearly embedded in a rock wall. The Healer tells her she was pregnant (she hadn't realised) and had miscarried due to the constant betweening. She isn't sure whether to be happy or sad at the news.

* 2582-2585, 20-24 She manages to avoid that for several turns, concentrating on fighting thread. Her luck eventually runs out and she feels horrible (it at least is an early warning to stop going between) and it doesn't get any better.

* 2586, 25 She's miserable and in pain and takes to curling up with Allieth. Giving birth is a painful, horrible experience that she swears never to repeat. The healers say that is a good plan as it's lucky she didn't die. She'll make sure she doesn't by ensuring she goes between enough after each flight if it means avoiding this again. Still, the pain is worth it as she presents her daughter to her parents. She names her Izarinar and keeps up to date on how she's doing even after she moves into the creche.

* 2587, 26 The end of the pass is a surprise as it seemed like they would never end. She accepts the move to a new location without a worry. She's a greenrider, she's not the one who has to organise everything. She just shifts people and packages where she's told and lets others worry about making sure everything goes where it should.

* 2589, 27 Neisoth catches Kalestath. Allieth is far calmer about that than Z'nel. She's not sure what to think really. It's not right. Oh, not his age, there have been weyrleaders that young before now. But Neisoth's colour? She's not reassured by the hatching, though there are good points raised about the blacks (and possibly reds) being good to use against the hunters.

“Reach! Reach!” Z'nel's neck was abruptly lighter and she had to school her features not to laugh as her daughters face turned into a sad mask. This happened every time. She walked into the creche, Iza realised she had her 'mini dragon' with her, and Reach went between to escape back to their weyr to avoid being grabbed.

“No hello for me?” She asked looking sad and Iza gave her a very serious look. Clearly debating if mother visiting made up for Reach vanishing. It only took a moment before she came to a decision and toddled over to wrap her arms round one of Z'nels legs.

She grinned, peeling the toddler off and hoisting her up into her arms. “How about we go annoy uncle Z'tai hmmm?”

Iza giggled, “Tai! Tai!”

Your Reflection...

Appearance:Broad shouldered and muscled from a lifetime of hauling firestone sacks and keeping patients from going anywhere, she's pretty average height. She wears her light brown hair (don't look too closely, it's just started showing the odd grey) pulled back into a short tail. It used to be cropped close but with the pass over she's allowed it to grow out a little.

Response to 9th Pass Catastrophe: they survived one way or another. That's the important part. Homes can rebuilt. But lives couldn't if thread had succeeded in wiping out everybody.

Response to dragon color mutations: They are a pain. Literally. Violent critters who cause more problems in hatching than any dragon should. Still, it's nothing that they won't be able to overcome and find a solution for with some thought.
The Weyrleader is... young. But he's not done too badly yet. As long as he keeps doing not too badly, Karowen won't care.

Who are you...

Likes:

Drawing: She'll often spend her downtime propped up against the edge of the weyrbowl and just doodling. She's no master at the craft, but you can sort of tell what things are meant to be and she finds it relaxing.

Parties: She's never been shy and parties are fun, food, drink, and people, what more could be needed? Only thing better is a good mating flight as the riders are always up for a good time.

Her reputation: It is nice to have bronze dragons follow her orders. Now if only it would work on the stubborn riders she'd be all set.

Dislikes:

Idiots: Specifically idiots who think they know better than their healer. Dragons and riders alike are both the same. They think they know best and she's the one who has to put them back together a second time.

Flits: Aggravating little buggers which just get in the way most of the time. Sure they can be useful, but that's only when they're trained and most of them seem to lack that, just popping in and whirling round while she's trying to save a patient.

Rain: And high humidity. And storms. And snow... Just bad weather in general really. She's starting to feel some of the old injuries she's gathered through the years and the island doesn't help with some of it's seasons.

Being pregnant: It's just inconvenient, and stops her leaning over easily she's done it twice, she's not going through it again.

Strengths:

* CARING: As a healer this is clearly of great use and Karowen definitely got enough to go round. While she's got no love of babies and small children, she more considers the entire Weyr to be hers, after all, somebody has to keep them in one piece because some riders certainly seem intent on unnoticed self destruction.

* DECISIVE: The split second between one action and another can mean the difference between life and death. That was a lesson learnt early on and she's never forgotten it. She'll use what facts she has and make a choice, she'll worry about if it was the right choice later.

* PUNCTUAL: Another early lesson never forgotten, if she has somewhere to be she'll be there on time (unless somebody is dying, but she maintains that does not count)

* STRONG: Taking after her father she has a broader frame than a lot of the women do, then pair that with years of hauling firestone (she went through candidacy and then stayed at the weyr, everybody pitched in when needed) and she's stronger than she looks to be.

* UNSHAKABLE: There's not much that can phase her anymore, she's seen the worst thread can do, and nothing can beat the sheer horror of that.

Weaknesses:

* DELEGATION: She's always worried that somebody will take a turn for the worst if she leaves and insists on staying with them - delegating the different jobs just doesn't cross her mind until she collapses into a bed somewhere.

* GOSSIP: As long as it doesn't involve a patient and their health anything is fair game to chatter about. There's many a rumour which could probably be tracked back to her if anyone truly cared to.

* IMPATIENT: Sometimes things just run better when they are sped up. There's no use sitting around waiting for something to happen when you could be out there doing it.

* SARCASM: Sometimes she just can't help herself, someone will say something so stupid she just has to respond. Her brain will usually catch up a little later and realise that she was talking to somebody important.

* SMALL CHILDREN: Her legendary patience wears very thin with children that are too young to understand her questions and she gets frustrated when they can't follow instructions.

Describe Yourself:

* CHEERFUL: It's not even something put on for patients, she's just naturally bouncy (literally when she was younger) and always smiling.

* CONFIDENT: She knows everything will work out, optimism is her main outlook on life, and even when she's not, she's mastered the Healers art of wearing a mask that says everything will be fine.

* AFFECTIONATE: Be it just curling up with a friend by a fire in a warm cavern to chat on a cold night, or the lust induced by a flight, she likes company and contact.

* ENERGETIC: Even as a child she was never able to sit still, finding lessons too boring after an hour of being in one spot, that hasn't really changed. Long meetings are the bane of her life, even if she's not moving she likes to be doing something and will often be found rolling bandages just to keep herself occupied.

* ADAPTABLE: Always quick to respond, she adjusted to the new injuries coming in without pause after the move to the island. Just because she's not seen something before doesn't mean it's impossible.

The Magic Touch: Don't try and sneak out if she's got anything close to hand, she's not above making sure a patient stays put.

Rank: Jr Journeyman
Date Apprenticed: 2571/12. (Training on hold between 2576-2581 due to being searched - resumed when she did not impress.)
Date Tapped: 2583/24.
Specialty: Dragonhealing
Education Details: Karowen was a good student, though that may have come from growing up surrounded by healers, but if she'd been able to choose she'd have asked to be apprenticed to the animal healers. She fell in love with dragons when she was searched and when she didn't impress she saw it as her chance to switch to animal healing rather than go back to being a human healer as her family expected.

Tell us a story...

* 2559, 0 Born at healer hall to a then Journeyman Healer named Ayowen and a newly named Master Healer called Karrick. She's a healthy child who doesn't cause too many problems.

* 2560-2564, 1-5 With both parents being crafters Karowen is often given over to the creche that sometimes forms in the Healing Hall that cares for all the young children to free up the parents when wounded are brought in. It's not particularly exciting for a young child, but she does learn all the teaching ballads and her numbers and is kept out of trouble. As much as a young child with an older brother with a mischievous streak can be kept out of trouble that is.

* 2565-2069, 6-10 She's getting older and basic lessons don't hold her attention. Escaping, which her elder brother Arrick taught her, is made into an artform, the young Karowen often being found in the strangest of places as she tries to find something a little more exciting. Though it could often be a good choice to check amongst the stables, or anywhere else there are animals

* 2570, 11 There's always more people coming into Fort and the Healing Halls are never quiet. Karowen, like a lot of children is put to work when they can and she watches avidly as she is sent running for things or left with bandages to roll. It also has the advantage of curbing her wandering tendencies as she has somewhere to be.

* 2571, 12 She's been learning for years but on her birthday she's officially made an apprentice of the Healing Halls. She wears her new shoulder knots with pride and eagerly delves into her studies even if she'd rather be in the stables with the runners. She's determined to make her parents proud and they want her to be a healer like them.

* 2572-2575, 13-16 She continues studying. The time is spent forgetting the outside world as she studies and then having it brought crashing back in when refugees turn up or fights break out. She likes that the healing hall is a little more isolated than the main hall, she never really feels entirely safe there. Towards her sixteenth birthday her parents arrange a marriage for her, it's not a bad match, she knows her intended and while she can't say she loves him, she could perhaps learn too. It all falls apart when some illness sweeps through the halls and he is one of the few to not survive.

* 2576, 17 Karowen is Searched. She's not sure who's more surprised, her or her parents or her siblings. It takes a little deliberation but she says yes, she's not sure she wants to be married and being a rider would certainly stop another arrangement. She doesn't impress, but stays to wait for the next clutch. While she's there the healers are willing to have her help them whenever she has free time (which admittedly isn't much, candidates are kept busy). It's the same and different, but dragons are enough like anyone else that she's already got a decent start.

* 2577-2578, 18-19 She's still not impressed, but she remains optimistic, and practicing her craft helps. While she's no longer ranked, even as an apprentice, she is often assigned chores there since she knows more than most of the other candidates and she's become a frequent site in the weyr infirmary. She's holding onto the thought of impressing as she finds the weyr safer, there might be more deaths from thread, but the atmosphere is much less volatile than at the hold. She's also gotten used to not having her parents looking over her shoulder at every moment. Despite the work being harder in many respects there's a lot less pressure on her.

* 2579, 20 Despite attending every hatching not a single dragon has looked to her and Karowen reluctantly removes herself from the rolls of the candidates and rejoins the healers full time. She goes back to Fort Hold but finds the atmosphere even more stifling than she remembers and quietly asks for one of her friends who impressed to bring her back to the Weyr. Apart from her parents and sister everybody she knows now is at the Weyr.

* 2580-2581, 21-22 It's near the end of 2580 that she realises she's pregnant after a mating flight when she took one of the losing riders to bed. The rider of the blue isn't one to settle down and they don't hit it off but he's solicitous enough to check up on her and on the child once he's born and weaned.

* 2582, 23 Her brother is killed in a fight back at the Hold. He waded in to help and got a knife for his troubles. She is able to get back to Fort Hold before he passes but there's nothing any one can do. For months after that she finds herself thinking that she'll just ask a rider to ferry her home and catch up on the gossip with Arrick and then remembering that he's gone.

* 2583, 24 Karowen is not happy to be pregnant again (she's not even sure who the father is), it's awkward and undignified. She has another son who she weans before handing him over to the creche. Threadfall doesn't give enough time for children when so many riders come back injured.

* 2584-2586, 25-27 Apart from the world falling down around them it's a few relatively quiet years until threadfall abruptly ends. She's just happy that she'll never see threadscores again.

* 2587, 28 The move to the island is just a jumble of constantly strapping more cargo to dragons and sending them off. She's just glad it's over with by the time they settle in a new Weyr.

* 2588-2590, 29-31 The good news is that there is no thread anymore. The bad news is that the island has it's own predators already. She's not short on patients trickling in having found a new problem they need to overcome on the island. Still, at least it is green here, and there's more food than there was in the North right before the move. Getting used to the weather is a pain and she misses Fort's climate. But overall, it seems to be working out, though she'll be glad when all the different excavations are complete and people aren't packed in together.

-----

“I've decided to accept the search.”

Her mother stares at her while her father takes a moment before nodding once. “It is your right.” He sighs, “are you sure? At the rate you're going you'll be made a journeyman on your nineteenth birthing day.”

Karowen shook her head. “I'm sure. If I don't impress I can come back.” Because she could, you could only impress a dragon while young but she'd have her whole life to learn her craft. If she didn't try now she wouldn't get to try again because it would be too late.

That at least made her mother look happier as she nodded. “Of course you can. We'd be happy to have you back.” She smiled, though it seemed a little forced. “Of course we'd be happy if you impress too.”

Your Reflection...

Appearance: Broad shouldered and square jawed, she wins no beauty contests. Unless what you're looking for is muscles hardened by mine work.
She keeps her hair cropped short, it's just easier to manage that way, she doesn't have time to spend on washing it and oiling it and trimming it. It's a dark brown that would lighten a little in the sun.
She tends to wear leather when she can, it's less likely to tear on things and you'll never catch her in a dress, they're just made to trip people up.

Response to 9th Pass Catastrophe: Everyone survived. That is what's said all the time. She thinks that's a load of sharding lies. So many people didn't survive. And as for the dragonriders - they caused the entire mess. Thinking they had the right to do whatever they wanted. And now they're still being provided for by everybody. It's just not right.

Response to dragon colour mutations: The new colours should not exist. Clearly the first black was a mutation that should have been killed when it was a dragonet. Letting it fly the Queen was a huge oversight on the weyrs part and it's hatchlings should not have been allowed to impress or be trained. Better to send them between now before they cause any more problems.

Who are you...

Likes:

Fighting: Not everybody understands but there's a huge amount of fun to be had in some friendly sparring. And more fun in a fight that isn't so friendly.

Music: She can hold a good beat on a drum and her singing is, well, not totally out of tune, and thus she enjoys joining in whenever there's a bit of a good night to be had.

Klah: As far as she is concerned klah is the best thing on Pern. Almost better than Kyrrinsk. Almost.

Kyrrinsk: She's the best thing that ever happened to her and she'll be damned if she'll ever not be provided with everything she needs to thrive. She has no idea what she'd do if he was killed, she hasn't dared to actually think about it.

Dislikes:

Open spaces: She spent most of her time running through the lower tunnels of a hold and since bonding to a wher she's stuck to staying underground. It's not that she's afraid of the open air, it's just such an inconvenience. There's no rain indoors, no wind, no burning sun...

Reading: There wasn't really time or the resources to easily teach her and her reading is still slow, which frustrates her as she'd really like to continue learning but there's still just not enough time, something always comes up. It's a good thing she has no-one to write to, what with everybody being on an island because her attempts at letters are still, to her frustration, nearly illegible.

Dragons: And their riders. Everything about them. People say that they're the only thing that can defeat the Hunters. She likes to point out that the Dragons and their riders are the only reason why they are here in the first place.

Strengths:

* LOYAL: Once you've won her loyalty, unless you do something to change that, she'll always be there if needed. Good luck trying to get onto that short list though.

* COURAGEOUS: She's not afraid to dive into a situation, after all, sitting back and watching never helped before, might as well meet a challenge head on.

* ENERGETIC: Perhaps it's the klah, or maybe she was just born this way, but she never seems to lack for energy once she's got over the waking up part of the day.

* INDEPENDANT: She learnt that simply following orders can get you killed so she'll always double check things if they don't sound right. If there is something not quite right she's not above working out a better deal or doing things her own way. But if it all check out she'll happily follow through.

* DISCREET: A secret told to her is one that is kept. What's the old saying, loose lips sink ships - well, they're on an island, that may be a lot of ships to sink as there's nowhere to hide if you run your mouth.

Weaknesses:

* IRASCIBLE: She's quick to anger, and not afraid to let her fists do the talking.

* TEAMWORK: She can't trust a team that's just been thrown together for a job, and besides, half the people she got asked to work with were idiots. It's become ingrained now that it's just easier to do it herself.

* HUMOURLESS: – The inability to find humour in things has been pointed out to her several times as if she should make some effort to change this. She can't see why, most of their jokes are immature and aren't worth her time. She certainly dislikes anyone laughing at her too, if she's not telling a joke they shouldn't have anything to laugh at.

* RUDE: Politeness never gets anything done. A sharply worded 'move it', gets more attention than an 'excuse me', so why bother with the social niceties? If you're not one of those she cares about then you may as well not exist. If that means she has to walk over you to get to a goal then that's exactly what she'll do.

* MESSY: Putting things away is time better spent doing other things. Clothing tends to live in a pile on the floor, as long as it's clean, what does it matter. It does mean she has a tendency to occasionally misplace items and find them months later when looking for something else.

Describe Yourself:

* FOCUSED: Once set on a path she will give it everything, often to the point of ignoring anything short of a direct threat to herself to finish.

* INTOLERANT: Dragonriders of course, they're all vain lofty people who need showing that they don't deserve everything handing to them. Even more so with the new colours. Generally anyone who can't perform to her standards are clearly slacking and she'll not consider them worth associating with until they pull their weight. And she can't stand those who run from danger - cowards.

* STUBBORN: Good luck trying to dissuade her from something she's decided on, you'll need a good argument.

* CRUEL: It was a lesson learnt early on, the world is cruel and to surviveyou may as well join in. She has a vindictive streak and enjoys seeing others in pain, especially if she's the cause. If others are in pain then the chance that she isn't is higher. Besides, if they don't have the strength or will to fight back, they deserve what they get.

* TOMBOY: She doesn't care how scandalised the more Lady like people in the hold are, she'll wear what she wants. She can out swear any of the lads her age and does so frequently. Marriage and babies are something she's not even considering anymore.

The Magic Touch: Klah addict. Without at least one cup in the morning you're not likely to get much sense out of her. Two cups might even get you coherent answers.

Born 2560, Tharyan, Brother. Miner, Died 2576.

Born 2567, Unnamed, Brother, Stillborn.

Children: None. Not for lack of trying either.

Tell us a story...

* 2564, 0 Kyrrina was born in a wagon during the evacuation from Ruatha to Fort, her mother adamantly insisted that since they had yet to cross the border markings her child would be considered to be of Ruatha. It is a good thing the birth is easy as they couldn't have waited around and risked the ever present threat of threadfall catching them.

* 2565-2568, 1-4 Her mother scrounges for what food there is, making sure her children get what they need first. Kyrrina doesn't quite remember it exactly, but the first seeds of resentment against the dragonriders were clearly set down, her mother blaming them for the losses that she's been through.

* 2569, 5 One day her mother doesn't return. Her Father says that it's the fault of the Dragons for not protecting enough of Pern that everybody is pushed together. Mother got caught in a fight, she wasn't even involved and somebody put a knife in her. She stays silent, letting her brothers cry and rant. She uses the time to grab what trinkets her mother had and stash them in her room.

* 2570-2574, 6-10 Life continues, her father brings up her and her two elder brothers alone, he's got a job mining somewhere and it's enough to put food on the table to that they don't starve, sometimes in the middle of winter it feels like they will and they huddle together to sleep having chosen food over fuel to burn for warmth. She hates those nights, it's not fair. Why should some people have enough and others not? She knows mother was right when she said the dragons caused this - they always seem to have enough to eat.

* 2575, 11 Her second brother is searched by the Weyr and despite fathers protests and her pleas he decides to go with them. One less mouth to feed he says. It's a noble sentiment but it won't make her any less accepting of his decision. When word comes that he impressed she refuses to send any sort of congratulations.

* 2576-2577, 12-13 Her eldest brother joins her father in the mines, he lasts four months before there's an accident. They never tell her what exactly, just that he didn't survive. She cries herself to sleep for a few nights before realising tears aren't helping. She's picked up a fair assortment of skills, bits and pieces of things from whoever father had found to look after her and she starts to do the odd job here and there.

* 2578, 14 Kyrrina is searched by a blue dragon from Fort Weyr. She turns him down, telling him that she won't be part of the scourge that killed Pern. She hates how everybody else was so happy for her, as if this so called honour was something she should have taken without a backward glance and jumping with joy. She ignores the astonishment when she tells them all she's not going.

* 2579, 15 Father is still talking of marriage. Kyrrina thinks it's ridiculous, they're barely surviving and he's going on about it not being right that she's still not married. How is a husband going to help given that most of the people they know have no more than them.

* 2580, 16 Her father is killed in a cave in at the start of the year. No matter how frustrated he may have made her at times she still loved him and she finds she's more alone than ever before. A sharp knife becomes a very handy thing to have around to persuade people that no really does mean no. As does switching into bulkier hide, cutting her hair and insisting that her name is Kyrrin - it sounds less feminine to her ears. Apart from the lack of beard and the voice it seems to work - she's often taken for a man and the knife sees less use.  She's almost surprised when she makes it to the end of the turn with contacts who can find her work.

* 2581, 17 She attends the hatching of Tavisk's clutch. She claims the first egg that she can, secretly relieved when the huge gold makes no protest, yet pretending that she wouldn't have moved no matter what. Kyrrinsk is beautiful. She never bothers to wonder what would have happened if the Wher didn't accept the bond because she did and it is wonderful and strong and perfect. She's sure she heard her say her name and she is sure she can feel her happiness as the young Wher is fed her first meal.

* 2582, 18 Like most of the previous year, her time is taken up by her Wher and she delights in teaching Kyrrinsk as much as she can. The young green takes after her mother, constantly growing until she's almost approaching the size of some smaller blues.

* 2583-2586, 19-22 Having a Wher opens up a whole range of options and she is able to start making more of a name for herself. Or at least, as much as one can be noticed in a crowded Hold. Running jobs for a variety of people that need things doing and no questions asked. She also gets into a few fights, both her and Kyrrinsk and she enjoys it. There's something so satisfying about putting another person or Wher on the ground. Perhaps it's just proving that she's not helpless, and she's not useless. As time goes on the fights become more and more a fixture in their life.

* 2587, 23 Kyrrin does not want to move. The people that want to go should go, and leave the rest here, instead of making it an order. Besides, why can't the dragons fly plants back here to restart things? She fumes in secret, finding a quick place to stay in the new Weyr that's deep enough into the rock that Weyrling dragons won't fit so she won't have to encounter them even by accident. She can't wait for the mines or hold that they want to make at some point to go ahead and be done so she can leave the Weyr.

* 2589, 25 She knew it was a bad idea to be outside but it had been a good job, a few messages and a couple of parcels to be delivered to the construction workers. She'd headed out in the early light with them, hauling rocks once she'd delivered everything and waiting to head back, one didn't travel alone. Kyrrinsk puts herself in front of the Hunter, taking the brunt of the attack. They are lucky they are near the rubble of the wall, their back to something solid. Kyrrin is left with some light scars across one thigh where claws had started to swipe before Kyrrinsk moved. She takes the broken wing easier than Kyrrin does, not understanding why her bondmate is so upset.

* 2590, 26 They're pushing to get a hold established and Kyrrin thinks it is a wonderful idea and she can occasionally be coaxed out of her underground lair to help with construction projects if it will further getting out from beneath the wings of the dragons.

-----

Blood dripped off her hand and she grinned despite the pain in her knuckles. They'd heal. She flexed her hand, checking that nothing was broken beyond the skin. Kyrrinsk growled and stepped away from the blue Wher she'd been holding down. “Touch me again and I'll do more than break your sharding nose.” She all but snarls at the man sprawled on the floor, a look of shock visible on his face beneath the blood flowing from his nose.

She smiles as she catches Kyrrinsk casually whipping her tail at the man as they turn around to leave. She lets her appreciation of the 'totally accidental, honest' movement flow down the bond and she huffs, pushing her head against her back as they head out of the hall.

Some people just don't learn. That does however mean that she's got much better at dealing with them. And besides... “Don't worry, I've got you now.” She says as they turn down the corridor towards home.

She remembers another time she had blood on her hands as she sat beside an egg, watching the little green snout push its way through, the rest of the egg cracking to leave the ungainly, ugly green hatchling behind sprawling in it's shattered shell. She'd been in love in that moment as she held her bloodied hand out hoping that the Wher would accept it.

Kyrrinsk rumbles happily, the altercation in the past and now unimportant as she sends her own feelings of love back to her.

Wher Details

Name:
Kyrrinsk
Pronounced:
Car-in-sk
Date of Birth:
02.02.2581 9th Pass.
Place of Birth:
Fort Hold
Wher Color:
Green

Egg Description:
The egg was nothing particularly special, being a midsize egg from the clutch, nearly smooth in places with patches of rougher shell and wrinkles around the wider end.

Measurements:
Mature Length: 3.0M
Mature Height: 1.2M

General Appearance...

She's a dark green colour, nearer to black in the dim glows of the caverns, but a deep rich shade in better lighting. Her underbelly lightened as she grew into her skin and in the right light there's the faintest hint of darker dappling on her flanks.

She's a big Wher (for a green), and her muscles are well defined - she's definitely not an idle pet. She has plenty of scars, souvenirs of many illicit Wherfights, thankfully avoiding anything that would cause her any trouble with moving around. One wing does ache in colder weather though, it was broken in a Hunter attack right after they moved and the scar is particularly visible.

Personality...

Empathetic: She tends to speak more with emotion than with pictures and prefers to keep in contact with her bonded. She'll react quickly to any negative emotions such as anger or fear by threatening whatever is causing her bonded to feel that.

Likes:

Winning: The feeling of victory is wonderful, it echoes around the bond with her human, reinforcing it. There's nothing like the thrill of winning, the pride and excitement from her bonded make even fighting worthwhile.

Fish: They are delicious things. What more need she say?

Dislikes:

Singing: It grates. High pitched and out of tune half the time as people who can't sing try to as they go about their jobs.

Rain: She likes the indoors, warm, dry and far more comfortable than being outside where it will usually rain on her, cold, wet and then with rain comes mud.

Strengths:

* STRENGTH: For a green she's considered strong, she's never found anything she can't lift and is convinced that there's nothing out there she couldn't carry.

* PROTECTIVE: Obviously she'll protect her bond mate, but if you're someone Kyrrin likes then she'll do her best to protect you too. And she knows she's bigger and far less fragile than humans and will put herself in the way if necessary.

Weaknesses:

* AGILITY: There's always a downside to being built big, she lacks the manoeuvrability a lot of green Whers have. Not that it bothers her. Why go round things when you can just go straight through?

* IMPETUOUS: She doesn't always stop to think things through, preferring act now, think later. This includes acting on her bondeds emotions without stopping to fully determine the cause or the instigator. She also has no regard for what she's going up against. She can take blues and browns, Bronze? Sure, she'll, have a go.

Black Riders / T'veck [10.08.2569 / Black Weyrling, Weyrsecond]
« on: March 08, 2018, 01:11:04 PM »

Play By: Brett Dalton
Biography

First Name:
Treveck
Honorific:
T'veck
Nicknames:
Forge
Date of Birth:
10.8.2569 9th Pass
Place of Birth:
Fort Weyr
Dragon Color:
Black
Impression Age:
2589/20
Wing Rank:
Weyrling
Weyrmate:
Eimerra of Imyth

Your Reflection...

Appearance: Treveck stands about 5 foot 8 and has short cropped, black hair. He is normally scruffy with stubble. An ex-Smith, Treveck wears practical clothing that won't hamper his movement. This being said, he is often found in workman's leathers when not in a formal setting. He has several claw like scars running down his left check from a child prank gone bad.
Response to 9th Pass Catastrophe: As a child growing up during the 9th Pass danger was part of the way things were. As part of a Weyr it was even more so apparent. When the Northern Continent was abandoned, Treveck was still in his early Smith Apprenticeship. He turned to his training as means to ensure his own survival and to cope with the pain of those lost in the disaster.
Response to dragon color mutations: Cool, its about time there has been some change in the way dragons were. It has been eons since the dragons changed maybe that means other innovations are on the way. Who knows, maybe this preludes other changes in the world.

Who are you...

Likes:
Working with his hands: He finds this to be both soothing and a way to rid himself of his own negative emotions.
Reading: He like to read because it is both a way to learn more about the world around him as well as being a means to escape reality for a short time. Visits the Harper's Hall as often as he can to read. Spends months on each book as that is how long it takes him to read with all the time he spends crafting and caring for his Dragon.
Honest people: Treveck leaned long ago that liars and cheats were part of why the Northern Continent was destroyed. Better to be honest and suffer the short terms results than to lie and become a bigger fool later.
Dislikes:
Hot Heads: People quick to anger are prone to making mistakes and Treveck's training has been a focus on how harmful mistakes can be.
Braggarts: Bragging more often than not covers a falsehood. This falsehood may be a small one but Treveck has learned that braggarts are trying to over compensate for something.
Cruelty to others: The world is harsh enough there is no need for people to make it worse for others. Is one of the few things that can cause Treveck to act rashly.
Feeling useless: During the disaster there wasn't much T'veck could do to stop what was happening. That feeling of uselessness has spurned him on to finding ways to make sue his actions have use to other around him.
Strengths:
Skilled Laborer: Before becoming a Dragon Rider, Treveck reached the rank of Journeyman Smith
Protective: Has a strong urge to protect others even if it would mean harming himself
Adept Learner: Has always been quick to pick up new skills and teachings.
Weyr Raised: Grew up in Fort Weyr during a Pass and knows the dangers of being a Dragon rider
Slow to anger: The only things that really get under Treveck's skin are injustice and cruelty to others.Other wise he is hard to anger
Weaknesses:
Socially Inexperienced: Having devoted his life to Smith Guild Treveck finds himself a bit out of sorts with the rest of the world making him awkward in social settings.
Loner: Until the Impression Treveck tended to stick to himself when not being trained.
Reckless & Fearless: A side effect of his fearlessness that makes Treveck willing to take unneeded risks. Due to his experiences in the evacuation Treveck is not afraid of anything.
Tunnel Vision: Once on a task Treveck tends to shut out the world around him often to the point of seeming bulled headed and rude.
Repressed Emotions: Treveck is an emotional time bomb waiting for an explosion. His work as a Smith has allowed him the means to avoid dealing with the emotions caused by the destruction of the Northern Continent.
Describe Yourself:
Strong: Is both mentally and physically strong due to his Smith training.
Dependable: Is well known to follow through with his word.
Adaptable: Can adapt to new situations quickly
Guardian: Protects those who can not protect themselves no matter the cost.
Thoughtful: Tends to think long and hard before making a decision.
The Magic Touch:
Color blind : Finds it hard to tell some colors from others.
When not crafting or caring for his dragon he is found somewhere reading.

Family...

Mother: Shara Master Healer, 2544.
Father: Bryndon Wyer Shepherd (Sr. Journeyman Beast Craft), 2547.
Siblings: Brother - V'ynn rider of Pyth of Imyth & Joilavth 2586, 14.
Sister - Cleo, 13
Wife: Syene: Harper Apprentice, 2568 - Died in 2585

Tell us a story...

This is the perfect place for you to write out your character’s history. Dot points work out best. So list the important events in their life and a small description of what happened.
* 2574, 5 Birth of younger brother Vyn caused his parents to spend less time with him but that was alright because he was already being taught by the Harpers. This allowed him more personal freedom in which he found ways to entertain himself.
* 2576, 7 Birth of younger sister Cleo By this point being the big brother was down pat and now having a baby sister meant that even less time was spent with his parents.
* 2580, 11 Prank against a neighbor results in Treveck being hurt by an angry cat leaving him scarred. This makes him more cautious in his childhood actions.
* 2581, 12 Started Apprenticeship with Smith's Guild proved to be a simple fit as he had always been interested in building things. Even a young kid he had spent a lot of time by himself using odds and ends to make things. Now he had the place to be put that creativity to use.
* 2582, 13 Parents arrange a marriage with a Harper Apprentice. Treveck wasn't keen on the idea but knew the tradition behind it. Would rather have married someone he had chosen than one his parents picked. Agrees to the marriage to carry on traditional expectations.
* 2585,15 Wife dies in accident shortly before 16th birthday. This causes an already craft focused Treveck into working even harder in his training. He shuts off that part of his life having fallen in love with his wife and avoids dealing with that pain. Builds an emotional wall around his heart so as not let others in. In the trials that follow the issue of marriage is never again brought up.
* 2586, 16 Celebrates brother V'ynn selection as a Candidate and crafts a token for the occasion in his spare time.
* 2587, 18 Left North Continent to Fort Island as a skilled labor. When it became apparent that the North Continent was in trouble Treveck was picked as one of the Smiths to help build the new life in the South. This forced to become even more focused on his projects and learning as he poured his soul and sweat into mastering his craft.
* 2588, 19 Earned Journeyman status in the Smith Guild which made him proud as it was the proof that he had chosen the right path. Being a Journeyman now meant that he had become someone of worth to the Southern Sands community and could be trusted to oversee small groups of apprentice or some of less basic tasks of Smith Craft on his own.
* 2589, 19 Selected as a Dragon rider Candidate for Kalestath's clutch. This came as a shock to Treveck as he had never considered himself to be the caliber of person to be a Rider. However, with the mutations that had come about one never knew what would happen. Having grown up on in Wyer for his entire life T'veck had always wanted to be a Rider but until this Search had never considered that he would become one. While he had a good life in the Smith's Guild he knew that he could better protect others as a Rider. The hard work of being a Candidate kept him busy as he prepared for the Hatching.
* 2589, 20 Impressed Baleth and became a Dragon Rider which took him from the life he knew as a Smith. Gone were the days he knew, as helping a new dragon become fit for duty. This event begins a process that makes T'veck learn more about his true nature.

---

“Would you settle down.” T'veck near growled as Baleth twitched again, nearly upending the oil bucket with his tail. “I'll never get this done at this rate.”

Work faster, they're all done! The head turns to look at him, eyes flaring with hints of orange and red as he continues to oil a patch of skin that is cracking on one thigh. T'veck didn't need to turn around to know his dragon was talking about the red, green and blues who were already trotting off to find good sunbathing spots, their riders making their way back towards the caves to drop of supplies. “They. Are smaller than you.” The tail twitches again and the oil bucket crashes to the floor as T'veck scrambles to catch it before he loses all the oil inside it. “They also. Kept. Still.”

Baleth huffs, managing to still his twitching tail so that it can be checked. Now can I go?

“Yes. And no fighting for a spot in the sun.” His dragon rumbles again, grudgingly letting his acceptance of the order filter through their bond.

T'veck picks the bucket up, keeping an eye on Baleth as the young dragon squeezes into a spot in the sun and settles down with only a small shove at a few of the smaller dragons that don't shuffle over just enough for his liking. Good enough, T'veck decides as he heads indoors to the next job on his list.

Likes:
Music: Baleth likes music, because it serves as an effective way to put him to sleep. He even considers the sounds T'veck's Smithing to be music.
Sunbathing: As with most dragons, the black likes to sunbathe, as it allows him a chance to be lazy and observe the world around him.

The player
That would be me. This will be my first online RP though I have done a fair bit of tabletop before now so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens here and getting involved.

Open to whateverI'll play pretty much anything so just hit me up and let me know how you want to run with threads.

Weyrling/Weyrsecond T'veck & Baleth
"Yes, Baleth is black, got a problem with that?"

Plot: Currently trying to survive Weyrling training intact. New Weyrmate after Baleth (insufferable smug egocentric sharding lizard) flew Imyth. So getting to know Eimerra and work out what exactly a weyrsecond does and where he goes from here.

Details:
Weyrmate: Eimerra of Imyth

Wingrider J'ken & Tadriath
"We're not lost, just taking the scenic route"

Plot: J'ken's a calm character who likes things to go to plan. If things don't he'll always offer to help get things back on track.
When he's not seeing to wing duties he'll usually be found with his family, (or avoiding the family - depending on how tired he is and how loud his siblings are being), or out lazily flying with Tadriath.

Details:
J'ken's not currently in a relationship - he's just not found the right person. Though his sister Jossekayne may be looking for him...
He has two firelizards, Gem and Typhoon.
Flight reminder:
Gem rises 10.04. Force catch. Abandons clutches.

Coded by SanctifiedSavage for SWW

Wherhandler Kyrrin & Kyrrinsk
"You think we care?"

Plot: Kyrrin is an independent sort, she dislikes being ordered to do things unless it's on her terms. Dragonriders don't deserve any respect from her as far as she's concerned. She enjoys fighting, a good brawl is always a good work out, be it herself or Kyrrinsk that's fighting.

Details:
Relationship: Looking though she doubts she'll find anyone that actually wants her since she's not exactly conventional

Flight reminder:
Kyrrinsk runs 18.05. Force catch.

Your Reflection...

Appearance:
Handsome enough but not the best looking one in the family, J'ken takes more after his father than his mother in looks. He keep his hair cropped short, easier to fit under a helmet as it tends to be rather untamable when longer. While he was younger he preferred to remain clean shaven, as he's gotten older he's taken to wearing what he thinks is a rather fetching goatee. He doesn't have any really visible scars, there's a faint threadscore on one cheek, but it clearly wasn't a deep score.
He doesn't appear to care about his appearance, preferring practical clothing over fashionable, often wearing his clothing until it starts to fall apart or one of his family manage to abscond with it to dispose of it. Except his flying leathers, those are kept repaired to the highest standard along with his harness and other equipment.
Response to 9th Pass Catastrophe:
It was nothing that could have been foreseen, dragonriders, holders and crafters alike wanted thread gone, taking that chance was not something that could be turned down. Obviously, he's not impressed at it's failure but he will never bemoan those who made the decision to try. The new way of things is just what it is and it's best to focus on doing what they can now. It's no use holding to traditions that no longer have any use or relevance.
Response to dragon color mutations: J'ken doesn't really have an opinion one way or the other for the mutations. He's not a fan of the more violent hatchings, but he also can't deny they are doing well in the new location. The humans have had to adapt to the new way of life, that the dragons are also adapting is not unusual - he just didn't expect it to be within such a short space of time or that the change would be so visible.
Providing the black and red dragons perform their duties as required he will have no issue working with them. He's also got no issues with trying to fly the reds when they rise. That extends to the new Weyrleader, as long as he's doing his duty to the Weyr

Who are you...

Likes:

Quiet: Not so much silence or being alone all the time, but more a solitude every so often away from the rush of the Weyr and the children and animals. Weyr life can be loud and with so many other people around (and dragons only too happy to let others know where you're hiding) plus the duties as a Rider, and a family that is always loud and on the go, time alone to just relax is something to be treasured.

Music: A closet harper, J'ken enjoys making up new tunes, although he rarely plays for anyone beyond his family when they pester him enough.

Sunset: It means another day has finished and with some luck, all the people he loves have made it too. Despite no thread remaining he still tends to enjoy the evenings as he wonders what the next day will bring.

Dislikes:

Storms: They're not fun to fly in and since Tadriath isn't a fan the dislike tends to be amplified, especially if there is thunder or lightning.

Shirkers: He can't stand people who try to get out of doing their duties by whatever means possible. Switching shifts won't bother, but knowingly not turning up or making excuses to avoid doing something will not endear you to him.

Deceit: It's hard to hide anything in a loud, close family and lying is soon found out one way or another - a good thing because he despises liars.

Cooking: As his father once said when he was helping him: 'A thunderstorm would have less impact on the kitchen than you do attempting to boil water!'. It is a source of great frustration that no matter how hard he tries anything beyond the most basic of cooking recipes have a tendency to go wrong somewhere along the line.

Swimming: J'ken very adamantly dislikes swimming. Ever since the time as a weyrling Tadriath had to fish him out of the lake after he slipped and went under. He won't go into water deeper than he is unless it's absolutely necessary. Bathing Tadriath is now something done on the very edge of the water, something Tadriath tolerates with an amused air.

Strengths:

* RELIABLE: Never one to shirk his duties, and always where he should be on time. J'ken doesn't indulge in alcohol much to begin with, (seeing it more as an indulgence that may well be an impediment to his duties to his dragon and the Weyr) but he'll forgo it entirely if he's due on duty soon.

* RESPONSIBLE: As the eldest of a large family, J'ken was often called on to help with his younger siblings when they weren't in the creche, a duty that he both enjoyed as he loved them all, and relished as he could be seen to be helping and doing something useful as the rest of the world was not going as well.

* PRACTICAL: Everything can have a use, and in this day and age, it really should. There isn't enough left for frivolous items, if it doesn't have a use, it's just clutter. This extends to his flits, they're not shoulder ornaments, they can carry messages and when thread was still falling they could keep watch and fight the same as a dragon, if on a smaller scale.

* FAIR: He doesn't like to make snap judgements, rather he'll gather all the evidence and then come to a decision.

* HONEST: There's nothing to be gained from telling lies beyond creating friction when they need to be standing together.

Weaknesses:

* PRIDE:  J'ken is not one to demur any accolades. While he won't accept anything he hasn't earnt, he will eagerly glow in the triumphs and accolades that he did have a hand in.

* CAUTIOUS: While a little caution can be a good thing, J'ken can sometimes go a little too far to ensure he's got a good plan for whatever he's doing After all, it's not just his safety, but that of others which could depend upon his attention to detail.

* ALOOF: To those outside his family and wing J'ken can come across as a little cold and uncaring. Until you get to know him and break past his walls he can be a little cold and untrusting.

* STUBBORN: He might take a while deciding on his course of action, but once he's decided, good luck dissuading him from his course.

* UNSYMPATHETIC: The world was falling down around him, and he had his family to think of first. It's not that he doesn't care or is unmoved entirely, it's just that there's always a selfish part of J'ken that is glad something has happened to somebody else and not his kin.

Describe Yourself:

* TRUSTWORTHY: If told anything in confidence he won't repeat it, even if asked he'll merely say that he cannot speak about it. If he says he can get something done, it will be done barring a natural disaster.

* UNYEILDING: When there is something he firmly believes in he won't back down. He'll avoid talking about topics to avoid a confrontation, but if asked his opinion he'll give it, no matter what the result might be. He also won't compromise on his own morals. It takes a lot to rile J'ken up, but when he is he won't back down from a fight. He spent his childhood rough-housing and the rest of his life fighting thread. A fight isn't going to stop him, be it physical or verbal.

* GENEROUS: If he can help, he will. Perhaps it was growing up with so many younger siblings, but if you need some help it's a good bet that J'ken will be willing to help providing it isn't something illegal.

* CONTENT: He has Tadriath, his family, his wing, his weyr, what more could he need? They survived and they're going to continue to survive. Pining for the past won't help so he'll happily make do with what they do have.

* CALM: He's been told several times that he should be a brown rider with how calm he remains in a crisis (nothing can be worse than separating siblings who all want one toy, right?)

The Magic Touch: J'ken can imagine extremely accurate and detailed mental pictures for going between. It's just a pity that his sense of direction is slightly off and if Tadriath, Gem and Typhoon aren't paying attention they can find themselves taking a slightly longer route when flying direct.

Family...

Mother: Kaynella. Rider of Ekesth. Born 2538. Impressed 2552. Died 2568.
Father: Josskelyn. Weyrfolk. Born 2537.

Siblings: Kenelle. Brother. Born 2556.
Jossekayne of Lyrisiveth. Sister. Born 2559. Impressed 2574
S'kelyn (Sekelyn) of Quaith. Brother. Born 2562. Impressed 2578.
Nakayne. Brother. Born 2565.

Children: None that he's aware of. Any flights he's taken part in with a female rider have not resulted in children. Although it's entirely possible he has fathered children with some of the weyrfolk, he's not been told about any.

Tell us a story...

* 2554, 0,  The first born child of Kaynella, a Blue rider, and her lover Josskelyn, Jesseken obviously doesn't remember this time in his life. Although he is told that he was a handsome baby.

*2555 -2561, 1-6, Jesseken spent half his time in the creche, desperately wanting to be a dragonrider and the other half wanting to be just like his father who took care of him the rest of the time. He had two siblings, a sister and a brother, all close enough in age that they got along well, once he'd got over sharing his father with them that is. He also spent as much time as he could with his mothers dragon Ekesth and he was always so proud of himself when he helped oil her (Ekesth must have had a lot of patience for having her legs oiled at random times)

*2561, 7, Telgar Weyr was abandoned and the family moved to Fort Weyr. At the age of seven this was a move that Jesseken still remembers and while he never struggled too much to settle in, he does still wonder what life would have been like if they hadn't had to move. Beyond the location change though, nothing really seemed different, he still went to lessons, played and fought with his siblings and helped care for Ekesth.

2562 - 2567, 8 - 13. After the move another two brothers joined the family and he was very proud to be left in charge of them when needed because he was the eldest and thus the 'most responsible' as his father said. Being searched when he turned twelve was a great source of pride as he eagerly joined the canditates in the hopes that he could follow in his mothers footsteps. He settled well as a candidate, possibly helped by being able to just run back to his parents weyr when he wanted unlike the holder candidates.

* 2568, 14, is both one of the best and worst years that he can remember. His mother and dragon go between during a threadfall and Jesseken impresses barely a month later. A bittersweet impression as he never got to show off to his mother that he was now a Dragonrider. While he's not unaware of how his mothers death affects he rest of the family, he's almost glad that he has Tadriath as his new duties require him to escape the somber feeling that settled in their quarters in the aftermath.

*2569-2570, 15-16, Weyrling duties take up much of his time and he hasn't any real memories of anything other than oiling and feeding an ever growing dragon and endless drills on the ground, and then later in the air. He does remember the moment he is first allowed to fly during a threadfall, yes it's only carting firestone around, however it was an essential part of fighting thread and he had been waiting for this for as long as he could remember.

*2571-2577, 17-22, Time passes in a blur once he graduates to a fighting wing, days settling into a routine of fighting thread, wing duties, and dashing back to see his family whenever he has a spare moment. It takes a little while but he settles down, balancing everything and he's content with his life. His only sister impresses to a green in 2574 and one of his brothers to another blue in 2578 and he is one of those cheering loudest in the stands for both of them.

*2578, 23, Towards the end of the turn Tadriath is scored in a bad fall, a large clump blowing away from the flame of his wingmate who had been trying to burn it and landing directly across his flank. They go between instantly, the knowledge drilled into them taking over as they come out of between barely a dragonlength above the weyrbowl. They're grounded for three months while Tadrith heals and J'ken has never felt as useless. He ends up with two flits when they hatch right after a fall. He'd been helping bag firestone and got pulled into the room when it became apparent the eggs weren't going to wait for a better time. Tadriath approves of them both, they make J'ken feel better than he was before. The brown he names Typhoon as he always has so much energy. The little green is Gem for she likes to remain perched on his shoulder and wound round his neck.

*2579-2581, 24-26, Jossekayne is injured in a fall in 2580 and J'ken lends what aid he can, his own time waiting for Tadriath to heal still fresh in his mind. He's relieved when she is finally back on her feet and out of the healing halls as that means he can stop worrying quite so much.

*2581-2586, 27-32, The last years of the pass are filled with more and more duties as thread continues to take its toll on the population of the weyr. He spends what little time he has free with his family since you can never be sure if the next fall will be the last one you fly to meet. He's lucky to avoid anymore big injuries, never getting any scores that take longer than a week or so to heal.

*2587-2588, 33-34, The end of threads for this Pass was a relief, J'ken managed to survive relatively unscathed, not counting the usual scores that every dragonrider bears. And he was both looking forward to the time to come; for the lack of fighting needed just to survive, while also being wary of the future because there was so little that had made it to the end of the pass. The subsequent move to Southern winds was not entirely expected or appreciated, he'd lived in Fort for most of his life now and such an upheaval was disruptive. However he could see that need and necessity must overcome nostalgia.

* 2589, 35  Neisoth catching Kalestath is a surprise and J'ken listens to the grumbling of the Weyr as it settles down with a young and inexperienced Weyrleader. J'ken reserves judgement for a while... just in time for the first clutch to hatch and the first reds and new young blacks to join their sire. That adds another complication to the issue and he's still not sure where he stands. Although he can say that so far S'bok is not a bad leader and Neisoth is clearly as fertile as his bronze siblings, and propagation of the species is still a priority.

We are lost. The voice was mildly accusing and J'ken propped one arm up on the small tree he was using to lean against as he stared out across the valley spread below them. His other hand was shading his eyes as he tried to pick out any landmarks he could use as a guide. If he squinted, the mountain in the distance looked vaguely the right shape, and the valley below did have a river running though it as he expected. It's just that the entire valley was pointing in the wrong direction, the sun should have been off to one side, not directly in front of them. He sighed, taking a quick drink from his flask as he thought about where to go now.

Are we lost? J'ken chuckled as Tadriath rotated his head to stare at him. The blue dragon was perched in between the sparse trees along the ridgeline, his eyes whirling lightly as he relaxed in the warm sun as his rider took a quick break. Flying from place to place directly was harder work than it looked, but it was well worth it when they came away with new images to use to go between.

“No, we're not lost. We're just taking a slight detour.” J'ken said as he swung up and refastened his straps. He reached out a free hand and patted the soft hide and Tadriath rumbled beneath him as he stretched and ambled towards the edge of the cliffside.

We are lost! His dragon repeated firmly as he launched himself back into the sky and J'ken's denial was lost to the wind.

Dragon Details

Name:
Tadriath
Pronounced:
Tad-ree-ath
Color:
Blue
Date of Birth:
2568 9th Pass.
Place of Birth:
Fort Weyr
Clutch Mother:
Allenaith
Clutch Father:
Gyorienth
Measurements:
Mature Length: 28.2M
Mature Height: 5.7M
Mature Wingspan: 47M

General Appearance...

Tadriath is the best looking blue in the Weyr. J'ken says he is, so it must be so. His entire hide is a bright azure blue, like the ocean on a bright day, with a darker more navy shade running down the ridges along his back. He has a thread scar across one flank, a deep score that starts near his ridgeline and flows down over one rear thigh almost to his knee. It put him out of action for nearly three months and has never faded. He doesn't remember getting it anymore, but J'ken says it is a war wound and he should be proud of it.

He's right in the middle of the blue size range, he has plenty of endurance for longer flights and is nimble enough to be useful in a tight spot. J'ken says being able to do a bit of both is far better than being outstanding at only one.

Personality...

Mind Voice:  Rather more stern than his rider's voice, Tadriath sounds far more serious, having a deep tone and inflection, his voice almost sounds like as deep purr at times.

Likes:

Flying: I know, all dragons should like flying. However he likes flying with J'ken and not going anywhere in particular, just the two of them pulling tricks and lazily winging around with no destination in mind. (Doing his duty to his wing and his Weyr is a different thing entirely)

Flits: They are really useful little beasts and J'kens green Gem especially adores fishing so Tadriath can have fish without having to go catch them himself.

Children: of any species. J'ken often jokes that if they found a baby hunter Tadriath would probably want to keep it.

Dislikes:

Change: He's not fond of adjusting his routine. He likes to know what he's doing, when he's doing it, and who he'll be with.

Cold: He likes sunbathing. Just stretching out and soaking up the suns rays. Even warm rain is nice. But cold; no. Cold is not nice. Having to break the ice on the lake before you can take a drink is not Tadriaths idea of fun.

Storms: The rain and wind isn't that bad, but lightning he hates, the sound and flash and the slightly singed smell left in the air. He prefers to hunker down in his weyr until they've finished.

Strengths:

* LAID-BACK: Nothing can rile Tadriath up. Bronzes and Queens being authorative, Greens being pushy and spiteful around mating flights, thread when it was falling... They just aren't important enough to get angry about. Tadriath would much rather laze around in the sun or spend quality time flying with his rider. This also stand him in good stead while flying with a wing. During threadfall he could be counted on to not panic and calmly keep going, no matter what was happening around him.

*CARING: Be it his rider, his family (J'kens siblings are his too), the weyrs children that ask to pet him, any greens he flies. They'll all get the same attention and care.

Weaknesses:

*GULLIBLE: He trusts easily and doesn't tend to really question things that he is told as much as he should. J'ken often gets asked strange questions with no warning when Tadriath finally decides somebody is trying to pull one over on him.

*IMPULSIVE: When Tadriath gets an idea into his head, good luck trying to dissuade him. He'll be halfway through his idea before anybody has had time to ask what he's doing.

New Members Introduction / Hello?
« on: February 20, 2018, 11:10:15 AM »
There. It's done. Fear me forum. I conquered posting my first topic. Hello forum people.

So, not new to Pern or to RPing... but I am new to putting those two items together. I've mostly done tabletop RP rather than online.

I've just spent a fair while reading through all the info threads so I think I know the background alright now. Still not entirely sure about this character creation though, it's always the hardest part of roleplaying. So many different ideas, and at the same time, none at all. Very inconvenient that. So any tips accepted. I was always more of a fan of the lower ranked colours in the books, so thinking of starting out somewhere there in some form or other?
