Announcements & Events / News A New Facelift
« on: June 08, 2019, 04:54:58 PM »
Moving day

New SWW Link -- eventually the old one will redirect here.

So, we'd talked about cleaning up SWW and revamping a bit - and this is pretty much what it is. Moving away from SMF and onto something a little more common place. There are a handful of reasons for the change, but what it all really comes down to is price and time. SMF served us well for the 5 years we had it, but we just don't have the time to diddle with coding like we used to. We need something a little more user friendly.

Then there's the price of maintaining it all. While Jcink Premium still runs about $80 a year, that's going to be a bit cheaper than what our previous host was costing us.

It'll take some time, but we're working to diligently adjust codes and try to make this change as painless as possible. Still, expect some pains as we shift about. Feel free to let us know either in discord or in this thread if something is janky or something seems off.

Currently, there are a lot of incomplete links and images.

What should be done:
Permissions should be set and the application and plotter codes should be in order.
You should be able to create your own character accounts, post your applications if you want, adjust profile information, and post in the various places. Feel free to do so and throw a wrench at stuff.

Skycourser Roster

Herders and Farmers now have the opportunity to imprint to a skycourser when it hatches, though hopefuls will have to be approved by their Hall’s leadership given the current difficulty of securing an egg. You can read about skycoursers here; please contact the admins if you are interested in having your character become a Courser: a handler for one of these huge raptors.

Please note that a Courser cannot subsequently bond to a watchwher; skycoursers will only tolerate these creatures in their space if they grow up with one already bonded to their handler. Under no circumstances will a Courser be able to imprint to more than one skycourser. Additionally, they are not friendly to fire lizards – seeing them as prey animals and food – so if you have a faire of flits, you’re claiming an egg at their own risk. Most skycourser can grow accustomed to fire lizards if they’re trained proper, but accidents happen and they are still, even once adults, wild animals.

Below is a list of all skycoursers currently in play.

Cracking Eggs
4.8.2591 // 3:12 pm

For the security of the precious eggs, the small skycourser clutch has been kept under constant guard at the tiny Beastcraft Hall, where they can be monitored, turned, and kept warm as they would be by any mother ‘courser. Midway through the afternoon on this day, the first of the eggs starts to hatch! Those who have ‘claimed’ one of the eggs are quickly summoned so that they may begin the imprinting process, as well as feed and care for their new hatchling.

Surely, the commotion will draw the attention of others nearby—including others in those Halls and Fishercraft, and even some Candidates and riders lured from the beach. Though they won’t be able to get too close to the baby skycoursers—and certainly not handle them!— some congratulations wouldn’t go amiss.

What does this mean?
Our imprintable skycoursers are now live! This means that if your character is in a position to be approved as a Courser, they can go through the process of securing and imprinting to a skycourser. For this clutch, the number of eggs is left intentionally vague because we don’t really want to limit the amount that can be passed out. What we are asking is that there be one per player to start. <3 Then we’ll do more clutches of these – or more egg runs – as people want them.

As with any other creature, fill out the skycourser template and post it as a response to your character’s profile thread if they bond to one. As a reminder, there are some pre-colored skycoursers available in the Creature Bank! Just bear in mind that none of them are officially claimed until their associated profile has been finished and posted to a character.

Additionally, if you want the admins to create your critter for you, that is totally fine too! Just fill out this form and we’ll get right on it. :3

Code: [Select]
Bonding Character: Name of your character here
Skycourser Gender: Male or female
Admin Created Personality: Do you just want art, or an entire profile?
Notes: Anything else you want us to know? If you’re claiming art from the bank, note that here.

A couple of things to remember!
Skycoursers are very territorial and aggressive once they have imprinted – and the crafters know this. One egg per person and only after whomever has already had a wher trained up. You cannot bond to a wher once you have a skycourser – they’ll fight, and the skycourser is likely to win. They are not friendly to fire lizards – seeing them as prey animals and food – so if you have a fair of flits, you’re claiming an egg at their own risk. Most skycourser can grow accustomed to fire lizards if they’re trained proper, but accidents happen and they are still, even once adults, wild animals.

We also now have a skycourser roster, where all of the beasties will be listed – and there’s a shiny new profile field where you can input your skycourser’s name, and it will be displayed in the sidebar of your character’s posts just like with flits, whers, and dragons. :3

Plot and Scheme / Re: Monthly Weather Forecast
« on: April 16, 2019, 12:32:54 PM »
Month 8 Weather
Fort Island is now deeply ensconced in monsoon season, meaning that the rain is almost a constant and sunny days are rare. There’s still quite a bit of fall left to go before the drier winter arrives.

DateWeather
01.8.2590||Clouds develop late the night before, bringing a day of warm drizzle.
02.8.2590||The drizzle from the previous day turns into a steady downpour that shows no signs of letting up.
03.8.2590||Downpour continues. Gray, gloomy day.
04.8.2590||Skies clear early in the morning, making for a warm, pleasant day.
05.8.2590||Today starts bright and warm, but cools as a storm rolls in during the afternoon.
06.8.2590||The storm grumbles all day, with thunder and lightning accompanying the heavy rain.
07.8.2590||Yet more of the stormy rain, with thick fog persisting throughout.
08.8.2590||It seems like the storm is dissipating… until another arrives to bolster it, bringing howling wind and driving rain.
09.8.2590||It’s practically raining sideways, and it’s miserable to be outside for everyone.
10.8.2590||The rain goes away, but the wind stays. Flits may get blown away if they brave the outdoors.
11.8.2590||Less cloudcover today, and the wind dies down to a cold breeze.
12.8.2590||The temperature ramps up briefly, making things muggy and sticky.
13.8.2590||A break from the rain! Still fairly cool with a light breeze.
14.8.2590||Misty and drizzling, with clouds clinging to the mountain and over the jungle.
15.8.2590||The rain deepens early in the morning, accompanied by a wind picking up in the evening.
16.8.2590||Soggy, damp, and almost too cold.
17.8.2590||Would you like more rain? How about some wind so strong it even gives dragons trouble?
18.8.2590||The rain today is warm, at least, and the wind is gone.
19.8.2590||Some higher temperatures today, enough to burn off the clouds just in time to see the sunset.
20.8.2590||That doesn’t last long, though. A lazy thunderstorm coalesces just offshore by midmorning.
21.8.2590||Choppy waves accompany the squall, making for a gray and dismal day.
22.8.2590||Finally the storm dies off, but it leaves thick cloudcover behind along with light rain.
23.8.2590||Strangely dry thunder and lightning for this time of year, but at least it’s wet enough nothing can catch fire.
24.8.2590||Still and oppressive, with very rare glimpses of sunlight in the afternoon.
25.8.2590||Skies stay clear throughout the day, with higher temperatures and bright sunlight.
26.8.2590||Another storm arrives shortly afterward, like it’s trying to drown the island.
27.8.2590||The thunder is almost constant, but with very little lightning.
28.8.2590||Heavy rain, along with mist that shrouds most of the island all day.
29.8.2590||Slightly lighter rain, with even thicker fog.
30.8.2590||Broken showers throughout the day.
31.8.2590||Showers taper off into a drizzle with cooler temperatures.
32.8.2590||Barely any rain, but a wet mist over the whole island.
33.8.2590||A peculiarly sunny, warm day with little wind.
34.8.2590||The morning starts sunny too, but clouds and fog develop by evening.
35.8.2590||High temperatures remain, but with a slow fall of fat drops of rain.
36.8.2590||More lazy, but heavy rain, almost like being pelted with stones.

Red Lights

36.07.2591 / 10:45 pm

Cassaval, the gang leader and proprietor of the Last Gambit, has expanded his holdings. With the success of the gambling den and the consolidation of power it has brought him, he’s been eager to extend his influence before a rival gang can snatch up a niche in the market. This then, is the grand opening of a subsidiary business attached to the den. Though both are run out of the same larger cavern, a secondary one has been hollowed out and turned into private rooms available for patrons who are after a slightly different type of entertainment.

He and his lieutenants have blackmailed, threatened, and cajoled a small group of women—and a few men—who were once whores back at Fort Hold to become such again. Some didn’t mind returning to their previous way of life, while others were less willing:  but all of them are properly motivated and on their best behavior for the evening while they circulate on the gambling floor and charm potential customers.

To further entice patrons on this occasion, the Last Gambit is also offering discounts on drinks and buy-ins for the betting tables. Whether you want to make a gang member, one of the whores, or just toss in a character that shows up for the cheaper alcohol and gambling, you’re welcome to it all. :3

All we ask is that if your character does visit one of the Gambit’s new employees, you take it to a private thread appropriately marked as ‘Mature’ so that all players can enjoy the more community atmosphere of the gambling floor in this main event thread.

Kadynoth

Dragon Details
Link to line art.
Colored by SirAlahn.
Name:
Kadynoth
Pronounced:
[ KAY-dee-noth ]
Color:
Blue
Date of Birth:
24.06.2591 9th Interval
Place of Birth:
Southern Winds Weyr
Clutch Mother:
Kalestath
Clutch Father:
Neisoth
Measurements:
Mature Length: 27.8M
Mature Height: 6.5M
Mature Wingspan: 58.2M

General Appearance
Kadynoth looks almost more grey or pale violet than blue, save for the points of a deep, oceanic blue on his throat, near the bones of his wings, and at the end of his tail. Beyond that, his hide is almost silver in hue, darkening only down his spine to a dusted tarnish like the texture of a river pebble. His wingsails are the truly most eyecatching part of him, a shimmering blue, grey, and silver that mimic the flash of a fish's scales.

Clumsy when he first hatches, Kadynoth will outgrow this some as he gets older. Nevertheless, he will never be particularly graceful on his feet -- far more suited to flight than running or ground drills. It will be a relief to him when he's finally old enough to take to the sky. Though he can put on bursts of speed when required, he's normally a slow-moving dragon. Tall for his length, which is about middling for a Blue, he also has large wings that it will take him a whie to grow into.

Personality
Mind Voice: Vocally, Kadynoth makes a lot of noise; as he did when he hatched, he tends to hum, chirp, and trill more to himself than anyone else throughout whatever he's doing. It's just a tic of his personality that he "talks" to himself this way. His mental presence, on the other hand, is usually quieter, though it is by no means cold or distant. Rather, there's a solid weight to it that will remain steady in Narvia's head even when he's asleep. His telepathic voice is a mid-range baritone, and easily nuanced by emotion.

Likes & Dislikes:
+ Work : He'll be the last to ever complain about a chore or responsibility required of them. Like a good working wher, Kadynoth appreciates having tasks to complete and thrives best in situations where they can just take their instructions and go.

+ Narvia's Singing : As far as he's concerned, she might as well be a siren. No matter how long the two of them have been together, he'll always be entranced by it -- and will love lullabies, if she sings any to him while he's still a weyrling.

- Unwinnable Arguments : Kadynoth just doesn't see the… point? If it's clear neither party is going to convince the other, and the discussion is not being had in good faith, then it's just a waste of everyone's time.

Strengths:

* RESOLUTE : This Blue represents the best aspects of having a steady heart, and this facet of his personality will compliment his rider's own stubbornness. He's capable of letting the little things go, but when it's something important and worthwhile, no one will work harder than Kadynoth -- except maybe Narvia.

* UP FOR WHATEVER : Kadynoth might not naturally be the most spontaneous creature, but that doesn't mean he's a stick-in-the-mud. Any adventures or fun that Narvia might want to pursue -- so long as they aren't liable to get her hurt -- are something he'll throw himself into happily. He'll be a little more cautious if there's serious risk involved, but that's just because he cares about her wellbeing and her future.

Weaknesses:

* BOVINE : Perhaps calling Kadynoth dim is too much of a stretch, but he's a simple dragon and certainly slow-moving. Easygoing and gentle, he doesn't have a deceitful or conniving bone in his body, and he expects others to be just as earnest. In that, he can be naïve and easily hurt when other people prove to have ulterior motives.

* GULLIBLE : Along with that, he's a poor hand at detecting when someone is lying or manipulating him. This Blue is someone that could be easily taken advantage of by the less-than-kind-hearted. He will have to rely on his rider to be a better judge of people than he is.

Elmieth

Dragon Details
Link to line art.
Colored by SirAlahn
Name:
Elmieth
Pronounced:
[ ELL-mee-eth ]
Color:
Green
Date of Birth:
32.09.2589 9th Interval
Place of Birth:
Southern Winds Weyr
Clutch Mother:
Oriath
Clutch Father:
Leremith
Measurements:
Mature Length: 20.9M
Mature Height: 3.9M
Mature Wingspan: 34.7M

General Appearance
Elmieth is a pale, minty Green lady with a scintillating hide that nearly seems metallic. The mottling speckles on her shift with the light, making her shine, and displaying the variance of hues on her hide. Her neck ridges and cheek frills darken to a nearly emerald color, while her underbelly mirrors the color in a more scattered way. The webbing of her wings are darker yet, but still speckled, of a dusky pine color.

Short in length and short at the shoulder, Elmieth is a petite Green easily dwarfed even by some Blues. Her wingspan and sails are average, but this is a boon for her rather than a hindrance, since she's not weighed down by having wings far too large for her. Though maneuverable, it takes her a little while to get up to speed.

Personality
Mind Voice: Elmieth's voice is a melodic soprano, high without sounding airy and pleasant to hear. She does a fair bit of communicating vocally to, though the chirps of her weyrlinghood have given way to trills and hums instead. As far as her mental presence goes, it's clear and cool like a nice spring day.

Likes & Dislikes:
+ Attention : Namely, being the center of it. While she won't begrudge others their time in the spotlight, Elmieth likes being doted upon and recognized for the beauty that she is.

+ Down Time : Some might go so far as to call her lazy. While she won't actively shirk duties that she has been given, Elmieth prefers to avoid extra responsibilities if possible. She cares enough about her rider not to let that get in the way of I'nora's dreams, but she won't ever be thrilled about additional work.

- Mutation Dragons : Regarding them, Elmieth is of the same opinions as her rider, I'nora. She won't deign to talk to them, shuns their company, and is absolutely horrified by the idea that one of the Black monsters might catch her during a Flight. That horror is only slightly secondary to the fact that they continue to catch Queens.

Strengths:

* MELLOW : In most facets of life, Elmieth is not a dragon with a bone to pick. She's readily accepting of a lot of things, and it takes quite a bit to faze her, anger her, or make her afraid. This Green seems to glide through life like a swan through water, and she will, at the very least, try to make sure I'nora doesn't spend all her time over-thinking.

* COMPASSIONATE : Along with her mellow and laidback nature, this Green is both sympathetic and empathetic to the plight of others. As a social creature by nature, she's easy to talk to and cares enough -- unless given reason not to -- that she'll happily endeavor to help those that need her assistance.

Weaknesses:

* PREJUDICED : Even with her virtues, Elmieth is something of a hypocrite. She's easy-going about most matters, and empathetic to most people and other dragons… but the mutation colors are a huge blindspot to her.  She easily accepted her rider's disdain for them, seeing them as unnatural and alien. Those who end up bonding to them are little better, in her eyes. She's convinced herself that she doesn't understand how they think, even if in reality there's very little separating one dragon from another.

* SHALLOW : When it comes to attention from males of her species, Elmieth will always favor those who are more attractive, stronger, or in a higher rank. Though she won't purposefully be mean, she subconsciously gravitates toward power.

When she is physically mature, Elmieth will fly on 32.03 and 32.09. Please let us know via PM if you would like her to be a Force Catch. (Though since she dislikes the mutations as much as her rider, perhaps non-Force Catch would make the most sense. Either way, it's up to you. )

02.07.2591 Drinks All Around - OOC Thread
Even during the apocalypse, life goes on. As things (ostensibly) grow more stable at both Weyr and Hall, the Pernese attempt a return to normalcy. Recently, a small cavern set off from the Mine Hall’s main dining area has been hollowed out for the Brewer and Vinter Crafthall. Despite the dangers, they have elected to base away from the Weyr so that they can make a more concerted effort to grow crops in the cleared land.

Now that the transition is complete, they are hosting a small soiree for interested parties to drink, be merry, and see their new base of operations. While officially it’s limited to their cavern, odds are it will spill over into the dining area if enough people attend. As far as the Brewers and Vinters are concerned, this means their Hall has been officially reformed, though their numbers remain small and not everyone will see it that way.

14.07.2591 Tilioth's Maiden Flight - OOC Thread
Tilioth’s first flight happens a little before dinner at C'dus’s urging. She is a fast Green, but she lacks the stamina most dragons have. However, her desire to be caught by sheer skill means she will push this flight to her limits. The day is cloudy and a little windy, meaning our inexperienced Green might have to fight against the gusts ahead of her, as well as worry about what is behind. M'lan, W'sar, and Z'ryr are the notable chasers.

18.07.2587 Strike from Below - OOC Thread
This date marks the first attack upon the survivors, which means they won’t know what to expect. All characters who could reasonably be present are invited to participate—which extends across most walks of life, given that it was all hands on deck this early in the settlement of the Weyr.

20.07.2591 Oriath Clutches - OOC Thread
Unlike Kalestath, Southern Winds' younger Queens are laying clutches more in line with Interval sizes. In Oriath's case, she yields 15 new eggs this turn. Candidates are welcome to take a curious peek – so long as they don’t touch – and Riders are encouraged to come and pay their respects. Weyrfolk are likely to swing by, if only out of sheer curiosity.

29.07.2591 A Day in the Life - OOC Thread
It's a nice, misty morning that's looking like it's going to turn into a nice, misty afternoon. It's the rainy season on Fort Island, so everyone is just sort of thankful the sky is sort of bright and there's no heavy rain or fog. Less chance of snakes. Rather, this is a morning for everyone to get together and get some work done. Fishing, candidate chores, chopping up the catch of the day, escorting the ship out to sea - possibly encountering some tasty sharpfish - and hoping for one of those 'normal work days'.

32.07.2591 Lyrisiveth's Flight - OOC Thread
Early in the morning before riders get a real start on their work for the day, Beach Green Lyrisiveth calls for suitors to chase her. She’s not a picky lady, but she is a Force Catch, so your dragon will need to be wily, fast, or agile to catch her! Good luck. :3 So far, D'zel, Kaladesi, and K'eeda are caught up in the Flight.

Half a Decade!!
One of the most notable things from January. Southern Winds is now 5 years old!

Upcoming Weyrling Graduation!
The end of 2591 is rapidly approaching, which means that the weyrling class of 2589 will be graduating and being placed in their Wings at the close of Month 10! We'll be having another graduation event for this that will coincide with the End of Turn celebrations the whole Weyr participates in.

Updated MNPC Rules
In light of being more relaxed about matters on the forum, we've decided to make some slight alterations to how MNPCs can be made and used -- with the intent of hopefully making everyone's lives easier!

Event Suggestion and Input
As most of you know, Southern Winds is a plotted Forum. We have a story we're telling and happily dragging all of your awesome characters along for the ride. Our events are listed on the side bar for the current IC month. For now, we have roughly 4 days between events though we're always willing to adjust if the needs or requests in the Event Pacing Poll ever change. So let us know what you think about the events, or if you have suggestions of your own. Full details in the topic.

Voting?!
The votes are reset. So we’d love for you to vote every day for us. <3

Become a Weyr Outrider
We all hate advertising, but it's a necessary evil. If you want to help SWW advertise, here's how!

SWW "Encyclopedia"
We are endeavoring to compile our own Wiki, or Encyclopedia, here on SWW so that all relevant setting information can be found here - not on google. Help us out!

IC Rumors and Gossip
The Weyr is like any small town. Shit gets around. Contribute to the IC rumor mill!

Event Pacing
This is going to remain an active poll to judge how we should space events here at Southern Winds. Input greatly appreciated!

Character and Thread Appreciation
Let the people you play with know how awesome they are!

Recommend a Thread
Read a great thread recently? Think it's important to a character's story? The site plot? Suggest it here for those of us who just like to read the site!

Comments, Suggestions, and Feedback
We here at SWW love feedback. Let us know what we're doing right, what we're doing wrong, what you'd like to see more of, less of, or anything else!

It's crazy to think that SWW has been around for five years! The site has come a long way, with new looks, new arts, new faces, returning friends, and plots galore. Thank you doesn't begin to express... And really, it's all about being able to have fun in the midst of how crazy RL gets, eh? So cheers to fun RP, the hundreds of characters we all keep makin', and to more years to come. <3 We don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon.

Enough of lookin' back, now to look forward. We're going to continue our rough idea of event a week-ish. Not all the events will be doom and gloom, ideally, since the 'day in the life' seemed to be so well received. We're also pretty excited to explore the planet now that it's starting to get bigger. Fishers exploring farther out, mountain finding fun things. Minath is getting older and one small weyr is a bit cramped for four, moody Golds. We're gonna need to do something about that eventually, eh?

On that note, have a lovely Februray and happy posting! Try to stay warm where it's cold, and try to stay cool where it's too warm.

SWW Turns 5

This anniversary was technically on January 17th, but the roughness of the early year meant we missed it. Better late than never though, right? :faint:

Either way, this is... quite a milestone. It's hard to believe that we've been around that long, and we wouldn't have been able to do it without all of you. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for sticking around -- or returning, for those of you who have -- and continuing to believe in us and this place, despite forum software messups, lost posts, and some haituses as life overtook us all. Everyone that's currently an active player has been given the below award to reflect this accomplishment. Here's to getting to a full decade.

Love,

Upcoming Weyrling Graduation
Class of 2589 Edition

The end of 2591 is rapidly approaching, which means that the weyrling class of 2589 will be graduating and being placed in their Wings at the close of Month 10! We'll be having another graduation event for this that will coincide with the End of Turn celebrations the whole Weyr participates in. For now, though, we're here with an announcement to reiterate how Wing placements are going to work.

It's no secret that the default post-graduation Wing for most weyrlings is Prairie -- though of course, your characters are welcome to apply for a transfer with another Wingleader after they've graduated. But while it's less common for Beach and Jungle to accept recent weyrlings, it does happen. Because of their more stringent IC requirements, and to make sure each weyrling considered is a good fit for such a Wing, we will only be allowing weyrlings with 20 posts or more to be considered for Beach or Jungle. As per previously established canon, Mountain does not take freshly graduated weyrlings.

Please understand that this is not a punishment or a requirement -- simply that only characters who fit these guidelines will be considered for these Wings immediately upon graduation. Your weyrling can always request a transfer from another Wing if their dream lies outside of Prairie. Final tallying for such post counts will end the day before their graduation ceremony will take place -- on 37.10 -- in the interest of fairness. All weyrlings, regardless of post count, will be sorted into Prairie unless they meet the 20 post threshold and other considerations like personality fit and any extracurricular training it may be mentioned that they have done.

We'd also like to get a feel for what Wings your characters might be aspiring to! So if you have a weyrling in the 2588 class, we'd like you to fill out the following form and PM it to Southern Records for us. You've still got a bit of time to think it all over, so don't feel rushed. And please let us know if you have any questions or comments!

A note for Kyya and Jarak: Nalata, as a Queen rider, will obviously not be placed into a Wing. For now, T'veck will not be either, as he is in an acting Weyrsecond position. However, he still needs to think about placement and participate in the same exit interviews, so that it can be determined which Wing he will be joining if Baleth does not catch Imyth again next turn. :3 As such, feel free to still PM us the form below to let us know what you'd like for him in the future.

Form
Code: [Select]
Character Name: Weyrling of Dragonth
Wing: What Wing you have in mind for your character - please specify if you have OOC intentions for them that differ from their IC goals.
Reasoning: Let us know a bit of detail about why you think your character would be a good fit for the Wings you're asking us to consider!

Flora / Info Cacti Overview
« on: January 31, 2019, 11:05:14 AM »
Landing to 9th Pass
There were many native species of succulent and cacti on Pern when the colonists arrived during the First and Second Crossing. They found many that were similar to the Terran species they had come to know, but a few were so alien that it was hard to think of them as cacti -- like the strange Flit Eater.  They found that some species were poisonous while others were a good source of hydration and/or nutrition.

There was already an abundance of cacti on Pern, but the colonists brought more with them. As they cross-pollinated with the native species, there were soon hybrids of all sorts throughout the continents of Pern.

9th Interval
Only a few species have survived from the Southern and Northern continents; most of these were stranglers preserved by Farmers or Holders in the mass exodus from their homes to Fort Weyr and Fort Hold. Upon arrival at Fort Island, a few new species were found along the coastline, in the mountains, and in the forest.

Moon Spine:

Description: Moon Spine is a cactus native to the Northern Continent with vine-like stems. It has long, tangled arms that are no thicker around than three fingers with small areoles that hold 50-60 decent-sized needles each. It tends to grow in mountain areas and amongst rocky outcroppings in a cliff face or mountain side. It holds large, pale pink to cream white bulbs on the ends of small arms off-shooting from the main stems that bloom into large white flowers at night.

Uses: The vanilla-orange scent was one extracted from the flowers and used for cooking and perfume before and during the beginning of the 9th Pass.

Weaver's Needle:

Description: Stuck somewhere between a Terran saguaro and barrel cactus, this beauty can be a bit confusing. Weaver’s Needles grow to be about 8 to 9 feet tall and sport soft, downy needles until they reach a mature height of 4 feet; at this age, the smaller spines give way to longer hardened ones. Their girth is slender compared to the their rather tall height, making them vulnerable to severe winds and heavy storms. They swell and shrink in girth based upon their water content and are usually bright to Hunter green in color. During spring they sprout bright, slender flowers roughly the size an adult man's forearm

Uses: The long, nimble needles are good for sewing soft and delicate material. In the past, these cacti were grown and cultivated just for their needles. Unlike metal needles, the flexibility of the needle allowed for it to give to the softer fabric, and the narrow circumference --difficult to achieve with metal -- allowed for it to slip through the delicate fabric without causing damage.

Stone Plant:

Description: This native species is small and often times hard to see due to is greenish-brown color. The cactus consists of many small tubercles, with a single areole at the tip, growing from one large single root. They rarely grow in clusters and are usually lone plants, only adding to their exclusivity. When it blooms, it is normally the large pink flower that gives it away. This is one of the few spineless cacti. It received its name due to the rock-like texture of its bulbs.

Uses: During the spring, before the plant blooms, the fruit within the cactus is very meaty and makes a particularly sweet but tart jam or jelly. The meat of the plant can be ingested and is very bland to taste but normally full of stored moisture, making it a good source of water.

Spoiler for Subspecies::

Bulbous Stone Plant:

Description: Similar to its parent plant, it is made up of multiple small bulbs and one large base root. Unlike its parent plant, each bulb looks smoother owing to a thick, meaty bunch of leaves. It is greener in color and has multiple spineless areoles. A small white flower grows from the center.

Uses: When the flower is dried and steeped in tea in small doses, it is known to help alleviate depression, anxiety, and help with personality issues that come with massive head trauma. However, when the flower is ingested raw or in large doses when dried, it is known to cause increased heart rate, sweating, and hallucinations.

The meat of the plant can be ingested with no adverse issues and like its parent plant is a good source of moisture.

Fort Palm:

Description: This slow-growing plant is native only to Fort Island. It can grow up to 57" inches tall with a flower of 2 feet in width, looking like something akin to a Terran coconut palm. This cactus has long, slender, grayish-green tubercles that can reach up to 6 or 7 feet on an adult specimen. Each tubercle is tipped with long, spindly, fleshy fingers that are covered in fine hairs that can cause skin irritation.

Uses: When the plant is harvested just before flowering, it can be pressure heated and then distilled and turned into a very earthy but sweet and potent alcohol. This is a time-consuming process, and it can take up to 4 to 5 plants just to get 60 ounces of fluid.

Wriggler's Mass:

Description: Like the name implies, this native cactus looks like a group of wrigglers held together at one end. This spindly plant can grow as long as man is tall with flowers that either sprout from the center of its long fleshy tendrils or on the tip of each tendril, depending upon the exact sub-species. It was native to the most arid areas of the Southern Continent, and only a few species survived from people bringing it with them during their migrations across the continents during the 9th Pass.

Uses: These plants have no medicinal or nutritional value but make easy decorative additions. Due to the bulbus root system, they need no soil or moss to live. If one cultivates the plant with the root bulb, it can simply be placed on a ledge or in a glass. Misting it with water once or twice a week is sufficient enough to keep this hardy plant alive and blooming.

Aloh Verta:

Description: This plant is not a native to Pern. It was brought over with the original colonists and was once known by its Terran name of Aloe Vera. This large plant survived well in the tropical regions of Pern before the Pass.

This cactus is a stemless or very short-stemmed plant that grows to 35-49 inches tall, spreading by offshoots. The edges of the leaves are serrated and have small white teeth. The flowers are produced in summer on a spike up to 180 cm tall, each flower being pendulous, with a yellow tubular corolla that is 4-6 cm long.

Uses: When the meat, or gel, is extracted from within the leaf, it can be used as a laxative if ingested or applied to minor sunburns or small cuts for soothing, cool relief.

Flit Eater

Description:
These are something straight out of a horror story. This plant can grow to the size of a toddler with a carnivorous leaf the size of a canine’s head. Four or five leaves shoot out from a central bulbous root in the ground by thick, spine covered stems that reach around 10 to 12' inches in length.  Bright green with small splotches of a darker hue, it gives this plant perfect camouflage in green foliage -- allowing it to surprise its victims. The inner sides of the leaf are often bright colors to attract insects, birds, and even, like its name implies, small unsuspecting flits. A large, brightly colored flower sprouts from the center of leaves 4' into the air and gives off a very pungent odor.

Uses:
They bulbous root is very nutritious and is eaten like a Terran potato. The toxin stored in the sacks just below the leaf can be harvested and used as a natural insecticide on farm crops.
