Current Month
8.2591 A.R.
9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

Large avian creatures with four limbs and a set of leathery wings. Wherries do not have feathers like Terran birds, but a soft downy fur. The taste of the fatty flesh of a Wherry can be an indication of where it lives/feeds, tasting fishy when they live near the ocean shore and nutty when feeding on grains.

Since the Catastrophe:
The myriad and multitude of wherry that are capable of flight have congregated on Fort Island. The jungle and small grassland has been able to support the large population during the initial Pass, as the wherry act as a food source for both Hunter and snake population as well as feeding on the insects and birds of the island. Since Thread has stopped falling on 2587 the wherry have started migrating to the older Weyrs where tunnelsnakes, spinners, birds, mushrooms, and other scavengers have survived. Some wherry populations can also be seen thriving along the rocky beaches of certain coastlines. To be certain, the wherry population has thrived. Far better than that of human and dragon.

Domesticated Wherry
-  A slighter, generally a bit smaller, and often flight-less version of the wild wherry. These have been bred down by humans to be a more manageable source of food. They aren’t as fierce and have lost some of that predatory instinct, instead becoming more of a herdbeast in their docile mindset. They’re easy to catch and some more blood-hungry dragons will sometimes detest having to eat a wherry, preferring something with more skill and fight. These were consumed to extinction during the 9th Pass catastrophe, though there is talk of trying to domesticate another breed of wherry - ideally the prairie fowl that has taken to the tunnels of the old Weyrs and Holds.

Jungle Fowl
- Populating the Southern continent, and some island chains, is the jungle fowl. As their name suggests, these wherries spend their lives in thick foliage. They have adapted to this environment by becoming more land-dwelling than flying creatures. Jungle fowl have strong legs and their claws are more curved to help them climb into canopies. Still capable of short flight, their wings have become more for gliding than anything sustained. Males and females are both brightly colored to match the forests they occupy. This wherry is the primary wherry located on Fort Island as well as the main wherry that Jungle Wing hunts.

Rock Fowl
- A native type of small wherry. These are very common on the Northern continent and make their homes alongside weyrs and holds. Rock fowl have a thicker down for the colder climate. Males are a flashy mix of reds and oranges, trimmed by black and brown, whereas females sport only the most earthy of colors. This hardy type of wherry have flourished despite the Catashrophe and can be found scavenging around the empty Holds and Weyrs, having adapted to eat just about anything from spinners to the migratory birds that have moved off Fort Island. They’ve even been known to attack lone Fire Lizards.

Prairie Fowl
- As their name suggests, this variety of wherry can be found wherever there is open plains. Populating both continents, and some islands, the prairie fowl’s diet consists mostly of insects and grubs and seeds when available. They are mostly flight-less but capable of short bursts that are often seen during mating season, when males perform acrobatics in attempts to impress females. The prairie fowl is a very vocal wherry and this makes them easier to hunt than other species. Their plumage is often sandy browns with smears of bright orange and red seen on the cheeks and wings of the males. Now that the Catastrophe has destroyed much of their habitat, this type of wherry has adapted to the old Holds and Weyrs, scavenging in the tunnels.

Water Fowl
- Not exclusively living on the water, they are nonetheless capable of buoyancy and are accomplished divers. Water fowl live across Pern wherever there is both land and sea. They are more sleek and their down is more oily in composition. With a diet almost exclusively of fish, their flesh reflects this taste. Water fowl like to nest in cliffsides and are more social than most other wherries. They, like most other wherry, have flourished despite how Thread has ravaged the rest of the planet. They can be found on all over Pern, making nests along rocky coast lines or cliffsides.

Wild Wherry
- Aside from dragons, these are the top predators on land and sky. Twice the size of a Terran turkey, they possess strong hind legs and slighter front, but are capable of running on all four often to gain momentum for flight. Wherry are vicious in nature and will turn cannibal on their own kind if the opportunity presents itself.

Commissioned by Beasty, Art by Christina Weinman specifically for SWW

The Basics
These are the largest predatory wherry that Pern has to offer. Growing up to 2M from beak tip to tail, a wingspan up to 4.5M, and can weigh up to 20lbs. Females are the biggest of the species, roughly 25% larger than the males. The Skycourser are a dark brown and white wherry with a hooked beak and curved talons that prey on just about anything smaller than them – fire lizards, other wherry, fish, rabbit, chicken, baby animals of just about any variety. They are opportunistic hunters that were tamed and trained prior to the Pass to provide protection from wild fire lizards and other wherry.

While they do not have set Flight dates, Skycoursers mate once a turn in the spring and lay clutches of 2 to 5 eggs a week after mating. Once the eggs are laid, it takes about a month for them to hatch. After hatching, it takes skycoursers about two months to fledge and be able to fly, which is typically when they leave the nest. Their juvenile plumage is also complete around that time. It takes them a turn to reach sexual maturity and gain their adult plumage.

For captive pairs, only 50% of the eggs are fertile and will hatch. "Imprinting" must be made within the first day or two. That is, once the wherry has hatched it must be given to a Courser or it will imprint to its mother - and will grow to a wild wherry. If allowed to grow up 'wild', they will follow their mother around for roughly 4-5 months before she will chase them off - just as their adult plumage starts to show.

Taming Prior to SWW
They are trained by Coursers, a skilled Beast Crafter who raises a Skycourser from hatching. While they are not telepathic nor empathetic, the Skycoursers can be taught commands much like a wher can and are very attached to the Courser that raises them, that they ‘Imprint’ to as a hatchling. Enough so that should the Courser die, the Skycourser must be put down as no one else will be able to take over the training.

Because Skycoursers are very much 'wild' animals, they do not share handlers --  i.e., a Courser cannot bond to a wher after a Skycourser has imprinted to them, as the territorial wher and Skycourser will fight. The exception to this is that if an individual is already bonded to a wher when their Skycourser imprints, the wherry will grow to adulthood accustomed to the wher and will not fight it. Under no circumstances, however, will a Courser be able to have more than one Skycourser.

Skycoursers, while being trained and once fully trained, wear ‘blinders’. It’s leather headgear, much like a runner’s, that limits their field of view. They are also led around by a harness, much like the straps around a dragon’s body, as they are too big to perch on a Courser once fully grown. A Skycourser that is imprinted will obsessively follow their Courser around and the blinders prevent them from being easily startled. Even so, a Skycourser should be given a wide berth.

Due to the devastation of the Pass and the lack of necessity, the training and upkeep of Skycourser has been lost. The knowledge and know how exists in the crafthall in records, but there are currently no one in the Hall that has a Skycourser. There are, however, Skycourser on the island. They roost in the mountains and hunt all over the island.

As of 30.6.2591, the Beastcraft Hall has retrieved some Skycourser eggs and begun an initiative to imprint and train them to protect livestock.
