Guest Info Plot & Events

Current Month
4.2590 A.R.
9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every 4 or 5 OOC days. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Hello and Welcome!

http://southernwindsweyr.net/Images/news icon copy.png We are a mature, 9th Interval AU Pern. We've destroyed almost the entire planet in a catastrophic event. While we feature 2 new mutations, we stick pretty close to canon. We've Ranks, roles, and positions for just about anyone who wants to get involved, with a relaxed community. Play and post at your own pace. Swing by and say hello!

Southern Winds uses a subaccount system to distinguish between Players and their Characters. So REGISTER with your Player Account Name and the admin will assign you your Character Subaccount once your character is approved!

Southern Winds is a Mature Roleplay. This means we allow for sexual, violent content that would be found in a struggling, 9th Interval Pern. Sex is common place in the Weyr and terrible deaths are no stranger here. As such, our players should be 18+. These themes are to be handled maturely at all times.

Flight Calendar and Guide
« on: January 25, 2014, 02:16:50 PM »
This is our list of flights for the Weyr. The dragon and the time she'll fly can be tracked. It'll let you know when your beauty starts to become proddy and when you should start your Flight thread. Conversely, you don't have to RP it. You can simply let it pass and announce a winner ( or we can ). Dragons' names surrounded in [ brackets ] are still weyrlings, this is just their future flight date. Golds will only ever Rise once per Turn. Greens and female Reds typically do so 2-3 times a Turn; we will allow variances for fewer or slightly more, but the reasons for such need to be explicitly stated in the dragon's profile.

A note about Flight Lust : A Rider doesn't usually have a say in who their dragon flies, and who is caught. Southern Winds doesn't broadly take into practice stand ins and there are no doors to really hide behind. Suffice it to say, some Flights may not be with a partner your character particularly desires nor are Flights considered to represent a character's preference in any way.  However, stand ins are not unheard of and some Riders may hide themselves away for a Flight. This will usually result in some scorn from fellow Riders. The Weyr is meant to be open, sexually, and even the generally heterosexual Bronzers will find themselves paired up with a male Green or Red rider. It happens. Which is why the Weyr doesn't usually place much importance on Flights.

If you are uncomfortable roleplaying a flight, you may simply decide a winner or have the admin do it for you. There's no need to create a topic or roleplay a scene you don't wish to.

Dragon's Response to Flight :
It is generally assumed that most male dragons will try to fly a female when she announces her Flight. But not all will. The Weyrleader and Weyrsecond will only mate with the Gold they have flown, per the Gold's desire, and most male Dragons can deny a flight if their Rider is distressed, ill, or already mated. Though this may not stop them either.  Green and Red Female dragons may not Rise for a Flight if their rider is likewise distressed, ill, or expecting, but will generally do so even if their Rider is mated.

Gold Dragon Flights
A dragon that has won a Gold flight is considered mated to that dragon and will not participate in any other flights, just as that Rider will not sleep with anyone else. They are 'weyrmates' until the Gold rises again and someone else either wins or he wins again. That being said, all Bronze and Black dragons regardless of mated status that are of age will participate in the Senior Queen's Flight. This is to ensure the healthiest, strongest clutch and the 'best' dragon wins.

Force Catching:
This is when a female dragon will simply challenge all eager males to come for her, and the winner is determined based on the male dragon that catches her. There is no choice involved for either the dragon or the rider. Southern Winds allows for Force Catching, as that is required to catch a Gold dragon, but Greens and Reds have the imperative to be more choosey because they're not picking a mate for clutching - but for the desire to simply mate. That being said, the Admin would like to know who is, or will be, holding Force-Catch Flights or who will allow such behavior. If you agree to a Flight that is a force catch, then it will be naturally assumed the biggest, strongest dragon participating will win with allowance for variances, and participants are encouraged to know before hand who is the winner. If you have trouble deciding, consult the admin. We're always willing to choose the outcome of a Flight. Dragons listed on the Flight Calendar with a * next to their name allow Force Catches.

Duration:
A Green or Red dragon's flight can last anywhere from 20-45 minutes, depending on stamina and unwillingness of the dragon in question to be caught. Force Catches are usually the longest Flights, in the 30-45 range, with choice flights lasting 20-35 minutes. Riders who participate are granted an additional 10-15 minutes to find a willing partner and work off the residual Flight Lust, while the winner is granted significantly more time, usually double, to work off the aftermath of the Flight Lust. So if a Flight lasts 20 minutes, the winner is granted an additional 20 minutes to clear their head, clean themselves up, and rejoin their wing and its activities.

A Gold Flight is significantly longer, double a Green or Red Flight's longest duration, and will affect the entire weyr. This means the actual Flight may last an hour, or one full mark, to one full mark and half. A Gold Flight usually means a "day off" for most of the weyr except for those most necessary to run the weyr, such as kitchen staff and creche workers, who may only receive a brief reprieve during the actual Flight, during which those who have no interest in participating will take over watching the children.

Wher Runs
This is our list of runs for the watchwhers of Southern Winds, tracking each female wher and the date on which her runs occur. It'll let you know when your beauty starts to become proddy and when you should start your Run thread. Conversely, you don't have to RP it. You can simply let it pass and announce a winner ( or we can ). Wher names surrounded in [ brackets ] are still growing, and this is just their future run date.

A note about Run Lust: A Handler doesn't usually have a say in who their wher chases and who is caught. Suffice it to say, some Runs may not be with a partner your character particularly desires nor are Runs considered to represent a character's preference in any way.  However, stand ins are much more common during Runs than Flights, and Handlers are more likely to sequester themselves for a Run than Riders are for Flights. Unlike for Riders, this practice is not looked down on for Handlers, since many of them come from Hold stock and are more prudish or traditional about sex. Also unlike with riders, Handlers are the only people affected by wher Runs because watcwhers do not project as dragons do.

If you are uncomfortable roleplaying a run, you may simply decide a winner or have the admin do it for you. There's no need to create a topic or roleplay a scene you don't wish to.

Wher’s Response to Runs :
It is generally assumed that most male watchwhers will try to chase a female when she announces her Run, but not all will. Unlike with dragons, those males who have previously caught a Queen can still chase others and are not considered mated. Most male whers can deny a run if they or their Handler are distressed or ill.  Green whers may not start a Run if they or their Handler is likewise distressed, ill, or heavily pregnant. As they grow proddy, female whers usually turn more aggressive than normal, particularly to other females -- and this response is typically seen to a greater degree in Golds.

--- The Signs
•   Eyes - turn purple in the hours before sunset, a good tell for the handler to get ready and inform those in the Weyrbowl to leave.
•   A roar to signal it has started - depending on the training of the wher/bond of the handler this can be delayed til they reach the bowl or it might begin immediately.

Gold Wher Runs:
Unlike with dragons, gold whers are not considered mated to the male that catches them, and neither are their Handlers. This means that even a male wher who has previously caught a Queen that turn can and still will chase others. Additionally, people that are Wher Handlers are not necessarily mated or married to another. Gold watchwhers, like dragons, are the only females that will lay eggs.

Force Catching:
This is when a female wher will simply challenge all eager males to come for her, and the winner is determined based on the male wher that catches her. There is no choice involved for either the wher or the handler. Southern Winds allows for Force Catching, as that is required to catch a Gold wher, but Greens have the imperative to be more choosey because they're not picking a mate for clutching - but for the desire to simply mate. That being said, the Admin would like to know who is, or will be, holding Force-Catch Runs or who will allow such behavior. If you agree to a Runs that is a force catch, then it will be naturally assumed the biggest, strongest wher participating will win with allowance for variances, and participants are encouraged to know before hand who is the winner. If you have trouble deciding, consult the admin. We're always willing to choose the outcome of a Run. Whers listed on the Flight Calendar with a * next to their name allow Force Catches.

Green whers are more likely to allow for Force Catching than dragons, because their bond with their handlers is lesser. In short, while Force Catching is more common for Green whers, sex between their Handlers is not. It is entirely up to the preference of the Handler.

Duration:
A Green wher’s run can last anywhere from 15-35 minutes, depending on stamina and unwillingness of the Green wher in question to be caught. Force Catches are usually the longest Runs, in the 20-35 range, with choice runs lasting 15-25 minutes. All participating Handlers, whether winners or not, are allowed a small grace period to deal with their residual lust and then return to work or duties if they still have any at that point in the day.

A Gold Run is significantly longer, double a Green Run’s longest duration, but will still only affect those characters who are bonded to wher. This means the actual Run may last between 45 minutes to a full mark. As with Green runs, participants are given a grace period to deal with their residual lust and then are expected to return to work or duties.

By nature, whers run only at night. A wher dealing with Run Lust will not tolerate having the protective goggles placed over their light-sensitive eyes, and thus they will not Run outside while the sun is still up. With the Hall and proto-Hold's use of the interior Run Cavern, however, some female whers may begin to have their runs during the day at this location.

--- How a Run Works
In the days leading up once the handler has noticed their wher's proddiness, the handler is encouraged to announce the upcoming run on the notice board. Included in the posting will be a designation of if the Run is "free" or "locked". A free run means that the Handler of the female wher is open to sleeping with the Handler of the male who wins the Run, and will be waiting at the edge of the run area. A locked run means that the female's Handler will retreat to their private quarters for the duration of the Run with their own mate, stand-in, or by themselves. In this instance, the Handlers of the male whers are also encouraged to find stand-ins. The use of the term hails from the fact that, in settlements where lockable doors were more common, more conservative wher Handlers would lock the doors to their private quarters.

Culturally, it is seen as a courtesy for the Handlers of male whers to not participate in free runs if they are not also open to sleeping with the female's Handler should their wher win. Many Holders look down on those who hold free runs, seeing them as little better than riders subject to dragons' lusts, so the practice is more common among Crafters and Weyrfolk.

Once the handler has noticed the signs of an imminent run that night, handlers should lead their wher to the Weyrbowl if at the weyr, or the Run Cavern if at the Hall and proto-Hold. The Run Cavern is a large, natural cave that has been smoothed out by the Miners and lies far off the beaten path of more populated areas. It is designated solely for this purpose, as the location of the Mine Hall does not allow for whers to complete their Runs outside.

Depending on if the run is free or locked, the female's handler will either retreat to their private cave or wait at the edge of the run area to leave with the handler of the winner. Most handlers will try to encourage their wher to start the run in the Weyrbowl or Run Cavern. These are the easiest and safest places to hold such an event; but, depending on the training of the wher/bond of the handler, this might not be possible -- which would mean running through the uninhabited and less traversed tunnels, which is more dangerous for both the whers and the people in the area.

Unlike dragons, whers don’t rank as important enough to blood a kill before a run due to the rarity of supplies.

Firelizard Flights
This is our list of flights for the firelizards of Southern Winds, tracking each female flit and the date on which her flights occur. It'll let you know when your beauty starts to become proddy and when you should start your Flight thread. Conversely, you don't have to RP it. You can simply let it pass and announce a winner ( or we can ). Flit names surrounded in [ brackets ] are still growing, and this is just their future flight date. Female flits only Rise once per Turn, regardless of color.

A note about Flight Lust : Unlike with dragons and watchwhers, flits participating in Flights do not have an overwhelming effect on the person they’re bonded to. While a firelizard Flight can arouse those who they are bonded to—and in the case of Golds, sometimes people in the vicinity—it is easily ignored and dealt with. As such, any firelizard Flight threads are typically solely for the purpose of determining the winner, and thus what colors might hatch from a given clutch, rather than any other reason. Individual characters could choose to work off the arousal with someone if their schedule allows for it or they wish to, but most of the time firelizard Flights are largely ignored.

If you are uncomfortable roleplaying a flight, you may simply decide a winner or have the admin do it for you. There's no need to create a topic or roleplay a scene you don't wish to.

Flit’s Response to Flights :
In their own sphere, flits function like dragons do in Flights. Most males will give chase to a female when she announces her Flight, but not all will. A male who has caught a Gold may or may not be considered mated to her by that Gold, and it is entirely an individual phenomenon based on the personality of a given Queen. Some flits may deny Flights if their bondmate is ill or distressed, but since humans aren’t much affected by firelizard mating Flights, this is not always the case.

Gold Firelizard Flights
Some Gold flits will prevent the male that caught them from flying another Gold, while some will not care at all, or even have nothing to do with the male that caught them once the Flight is over. Someone whose male flit catches a Gold is not considered mated to them either, as there’s no attachment associated with these events.

Force Catching:
This is when a female flit will simply challenge all eager males to come for her, and the winner is determined based on the male flit that catches her. There is no choice involved for the flit, but as with other firelizard Flights, their bonded human will remain largely unaffected. Since a firelizard that is a force catch will not affect their owner like a dragon or wher would, there will never be a situation in which a character will have an experience like a Rider or Handler might. Their inhibitions might be lowered, but it is not socially seen as the same since they can ignore these impulses if they wish.

As such, force catch notation for flits is used solely to determine what colors might hatch from a given clutch. If you agree to a Flight that is a force catch, then it will be naturally assumed the biggest, strongest firelizard participating will win with allowance for variances. If you have trouble deciding, consult the admin. We're always willing to choose the outcome of a Flight. Flits listed on the Flight Calendar with a * next to their name allow Force Catches.

Duration:
A Green firelizard’s flight can last anywhere from 10-20 minutes, depending on stamina and unwillingness of the Green flit in question to be caught. Force Catches are usually the longest Flights, in the 15-20 range, with choice runs lasting 10-15 minutes. Since firelizard flights are easily ignored by humans, those with firelizards are not excused to deal with any resulting arousal.

A Gold Flight is significantly longer, double a Green Flight’s longest duration. This means the actual Run may last somewhere between 30-40 minutes. Gold Flights may even affect those humans in the vicinity who are not bonded to firelizards, but these effects can be easily brushed off.
