Guest Info Plot & Events

Current Month
4.2590 A.R.
9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every 4 or 5 OOC days. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Frienemies [13.3.2590 / 6:30pm] (Nieve)
« on: January 29, 2017, 07:58:40 PM »
Styxiss didn't know if he was supposed to be here at this time or not and he didn't care.  He was pissed.  This was the fourth time today that he'd had to wash this damned creature off. More trouble than he was worth, honestly.  The young man hardly knew why he kept it around. He stormed towards the bathing pools with Twit in tow squealing and reeing his protests the entire way.

Shit! snarled Twit, struggling and twisting in Styx's grip.  Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!

Although the flit only knew that one word, he was able to use it in a number of diverse ways.  For example, in this instance it was to express his extreme displeasure at the idea of being submerged in water and scrubbed.  There was nothing he hated more than baths and, conversely, nothing he enjoyed more than rolling about in muck.  The smellier the better.  This time, the muck in question just happened to be animal dung.

"Oh, hell no. I don't wanna hear it! You're gettin' a bath you little monster.  Ain't no way I'm gonna have you stinkin' up the bunk all night long," Styxiss grouched, bringing the fire lizard up to eye level and directing the fiercest stare he had in his repertoire at it.

Twit slumped in his grip and sulked at the human; the petulance was almost tangible.  Shit, he muttered.

Once arrived, Styxiss immediately shed his shirt, tossed it to the side, and made his way to a large puddle that had gathered next to one of the deeper pools.  He'd learned that otherwise, it'd get soaked from the inevitable struggling and splashing, and then he'd be cold and wet on the way back.  And it would be dark soon besides.

Upon seeing the dreaded water, Twit made a final bid for freedom...  and won!  He managed to slip from Styxiss' grasp and made a bee line for an outcrop of rock, far above his reach.

His ree of triumph was clearly jubilant as Styx shouted a string of obscenities up at him, SHIIIIIIIIIIIIT!

Their evening ritual had been practiced as such that Nieve could now follow the path down to the pools with her eyes closed. Lovely’s incessant demands to be bathed and oiled had started to rub off on the normally grungy drudge, and they were both sporting relatively clean skin and hide, although she still hadn’t brushed her hair in months. The gold flit didn’t mind that part, so much. She was still small enough that she could drape herself around Nieve’s thin shoulders and nestle into the wherrynest that was Nieve’s hair, happy there in her private hideaway. Tonight was no different, or so she thought.

It was seldom that she found herself alone in the pools at this time, but generally they weren’t as crowded with most of the weyr still feasting or finishing up chores and drills. Nieve enjoyed overhearing what gossip she could and it was good to socialize her otherwise solitary firelizard. If ever the day came when Lovely was taken from Nieve, the drudge was quite sure the gold would turn feral and make for the jungle. She didn’t want that fate for the pretty flit, and so here she was, trying to encourage Lovely to be some kind of social butterfly.

As they neared the pool it became quickly obvious that they wouldn’t be alone. However, the distortion caused by the echo and the white noise of water lapping against stone meant she wasn’t quite able to identify who was speaking. It sounded male and it also sounded a bit angry. Lovely pressed her claws a little tighter than necessary against Nieve, hissing.

Rounding the corner, there was no mistaking the fair-haired man now. Nieve paused at the entrance to the pools, considering her options. Her last run in with Styxiss hadn’t really gone according to plan, they were too alike for her to easily manipulate. Still, her juvenile crush on him lingered, and he was currently shirtless. She didn’t possess the shame to blush and it took Lovely trilling in her ear for her to realize she’d been staring.

Her firelizard had reacted to Twit’s triumphant escape. The flash of blue drew her eyes up and away from Styxiss to where his own ‘lizard had perched. She covered a laugh with a cough, that turned into a mild yelp of pain as Lovely launched herself from Nieve’s shoulders. The queen arced through the air and landed heavily near Twit, gripping the flat face of the rock to better inspect him. Likely, she was voicing her disapproval at his dirty state- a proper firelizard took pride in its appearance.

Nieve was left feeling very alone. She squared her shoulders to adjust to the sudden loss of weight and then, casual as can be, waved a lazy hand toward him, “Hey there.” She stayed in the doorway for a second longer, and then fully entered the room. Skirting the edge of the pools, Nieve instead grabbed a small jar of oil for Lovely, whenever the gold felt like returning. “You’re pretty bad at controlling your firelizard,” she turned back toward him, grinning, “How do you expect to keep a dragon in check?”

The former drudge was just about to try and scale the boulder when a larger, golden fire lizard suddenly landed next to Twit.  He arched a pale brow, puzzled, and stared at it for a quick moment; this one was nice-looking.  She was pale gold and clean, and she didn't look like she reeked of shit either.  Currently, she seemed to be giving his own flit a death stare of her own, as she loomed over it.

Twit took one look at the female fire lizard and was head over heels.  She was beautiful.  Shit? said Twit, dreamily sinking to his stomach with his four lower limbs splayed out in all directions.

Styx watched this display with bemusement, "Don't do it, Twit," he called up, "Women are nuthin' but trouble."

Then from behind him a low cough sounded, followed by, “Hey there.  You’re pretty bad at controlling your firelizard, how do you expect to keep a dragon in check?”

Styxiss jerked his head over towards the sound of the unexpected voice.  He hadn't even heard anyone sneaking up on him.  Stupid, stupid, stupid.  He needed to pay more attention; if he were still a drudge it could've easily been someone trying to get the drop on him.

Still not really sure it ain't, though, he thought, sizing up the newcomer.

It was a skinny girl with wildly tangled hair grinning at him.  She was vaguely familiar.  Where had he...?  Oh, right, she was the one from the kitchen a few weeks ago and one of the few he'd actually had a conversation with.  Styx's brow creased as he searched his memory but couldn't come up with a name for her.  The young man wasn't even sure she'd told him her name.  He did however remember her fiery attitude.  Funny, he didn't recall her smiling at all the last time they'd spoken.

"You're that kid," he said after a pause, staring down at her, folding his arms across his chest. Then, a dawning recognition flitted across his features and he gave an amused grin, "Oh yea!  Little Miss. Sunshine!  Heh.  I remember now."  He raised his hands in a warding off gesture, "You ain't gonna fling fish guts all over me again are ya?" he asked, tone poking a bit of fun at her. "And as for him," he jerked a thumb up at the wayward blue flit, "Pretty sure he's brain damaged and I'm assumin' my dragon won't be."

He took another quick second to scrutinize her a bit more.  Looks as though she'd had a wash since last they spoke.  Styx distinctly remembered her being much more grimy than she was currently.  Meh, whatever. The former drudge was fairly certain that he'd been just as filthy at some point in his life.  More than a few times, if he was being honest. She would get no judgement from him.  Still though, it was a vast improvement.  She might even be a pretty little thing when she got older, if she combed her hair a little bit that was.

A sudden inspiration struck and he turned to face his runaway pet once again, "Hey Twit!  You better come on down and clean off.  That lady-flit sure don't look like she likes smelly men."

Instantly, Twit zoomed down directly into the puddle at top speed with a great splash.  Surfacing, he began to paddle around in the water with eager enthusiasm.

"It worked!  Hah!  Hey thanks, Sunshine.  I owe ya one," Styxiss beamed at her, "Maybe he'll stop rolling in garbage now."

Lovely regretted that she’d gotten so close to the Blue. Here beside him it was quite clear that his coloring was due to grime and dirt and whatever other unpleasant things. She shuffled back some, her talons clicking off the stone that she scrambled to find holds on. The small queen was aware of her bonded’s conversation, but she could not quite tell the nature of Nieve’s emotions. She was too young still to decipher the drudge’s turmoil, and perhaps didn’t really care to at this point.

Nieve tapped her fingers against the glass of the jar she held, scowling over Styxiss’s head and to where her firelizard still perched. She’d be oiling Lovely with a little more force than necessary tonight.

Styxiss was looking at her now. She very steadily met his gaze, scowling as he seemed to try to remember her. It had been some time, but she was annoyed to have left less of an impression than she intended.

Her internalized anguish was short lived. When his expression turned more positive hers did the same. He called her Sunshine, though, so she wasn’t entirely sure that he remembered in full, but that was okay. Every plan tiptoed into light with baby steps.

Nieve held up her hands in a defensive, but playful gesture. Her, sling fish guts? As if.

The drudge scoffed a little at his opinion of his flit. “Isn’t there a saying about firelizards reflecting the one they’ve Impressed to?” She was still playful, but cautionary. Nieve had once been the last person to defend the so-called pests, but since Lovely’s hatching she’d come to appreciate them. For the most part they tended to reflect their treatment, barring instinct, of course.

Her suspicions were a little more justified, hearing him call the Blue ‘Twit’. Well, at least the firelizard seemed okay with the namesake. She even had to laugh at his prompt antics.

She was all business when it came to firelizard care, though. Nieve didn’t miss a beat as he thanked her. “He might be rolling in junk because he’s itchy. You might just need to oil him more.” She raised the hand holding her jar, wiggling it at Styxiss. “It isn’t water so if that’s the issue, he’ll realize it’s different.”

Her gold, seeing Nieve’s motion, remembered why they’d come down here in the first place. She pushed herself away from the rock, gliding down to a lower ledge that the drudge could reach. “They make candidates oil dragons all day I heard, so you better start practicing.” She moved toward her queen, sitting beside her. “We can teach you.”

Styxiss arched a brow in surprise.  Oil?  He wasn't aware that you had to oil the flits as well.  Though it did make sense; they were just tiny dragons, weren't they?  He hadn't been called upon to oil any of their larger cousins yet, but he imagined it wouldn't be long before he would be.  Seemed to him that the Candidates had to do a lot of the grunt work. Which also made sense, he supposed.  You had to start from the bottom and work your way up and-

"Hey!" he exclaimed suddnely, frowning, having belatedly realized her soft quip at his expense. "I don't roll around in garbage like he does and I'm also not an idiot," Styx grumped, pointing a finger a Twit.  "I found 'im outside in a wild nest and he's been followin' me around ever since.  Just my luck.  You better watch that mouth'a yers, Sunshine. Be a real pity if they were to find ya floatin' face down in the pools down here, wouldn't it.  Just tragic"

He was joking.  Sort of.  The young man was still struggling with trying to change his old ways and behavior.  And it was difficult sometimes. He glowered down at her for a second more before moving over to flop down next to her to watch.  Might as well learn how to take care of the little shit if he-

Shit, said Twit, paddling over to the trio, and climbing out of the pool.  The little blue fire lizard seemed very interested in the little jar of oil... and the golden queen.  Now that he was rid of the gunk and grime, his skin was once again a beautiful shade of blue, with lighter blue stripes marbling his back and wings.

Styxiss' gaze kept being drawn towards the girl's long ratty hair and he reached over to tug on a lock of it, "You need to comb yer hair, y'know that?  What's the point of havin' nice long hair if yer just gonna let it go to waste?  I don't get it.  I thought girls were always fussin' over how they look."

She was ready to laugh at his expense when he finally realized the insult laced into her advice, but his parting statement kept her mouth firmly shut. Death threats weren’t something new to her, but she also didn’t take them lightly. He was, as ever, hard to decipher and so she thought it best to give appropriate weight to his words. This plan solidified as he approached and her back stiffened ever so slightly as he sat beside her.

Instead of mocking him further, she invested her attention in Twit and then Lovely as the Blue approached them. She offered the jar to him for inspection, holding it low enough that he didn’t need to climb up to where they perched yet. If he was indeed found from a feral state, it was likely he didn’t have blind trust for humans like some firelizards did, and Nieve really didn’t want to add any more injuries to her already long list of them.

With all intentions of keeping the subject on firelizards, she was startled to feel him tug at her hair. There was no follow up, though, and so though she had jumped she didn’t yet retreat. Nieve did turn, pointedly drawing Lovely with her, across her lap, to face him. The little Gold fussed and struggled and fed Nieve images of the oil, and of Twit, and how he was going to steal it all away and then she’d be gross and cracked.

Nonplussed by her flit, the drudge shrugged at Styxiss. “I’m not trying to impress anyone. I’d cut it off but then I’d stick out more, it’s just easier this way.” Still, a little flicker of her self confidence extinguished with his observation and she could feel something like embarrassment churn in her belly.

Lovely crowed a loud note and finally freed herself of her handler’s grasp. She climbed down to where Nieve had left the jar, meaning to protectively guard it from Twit.

Styx watched as she showed Twit the oil and damned if the little ijit didn't seem excited about it.  Maybe he ought to get some soon.  However, the young man had his doubts whether being oiled would actually stop the flit from wallowing in mud puddles; he just seemed like the type to prefer to be filthy.  The golden fire lizard didn't seem to appreciate Twit's interest in her oil, however, if her posture was any clue.  The young man felt a dim sort of amusement at the display.  Twit better be careful; that queen looked like she could eat him for breakfast if she wanted to.

Styxiss listened to her go on about not wanting to be noticed and whatever else and then scoffed at her words, "You think you don't stick out now with that rat's nest on yer head?  I mean, whatever," he shrugged, "Do what ya wanna.  Just seems t'me like you'd blend in more with combed hair.  First thing I noticed about ya, to be honest."

Still, it wasn't as if he was any expert on beauty.  Styx glanced down at himself; dirty, brown baggy pants, worn boots and an old belt that held his food pouch and other assorted items that he considered valuable.  He imagined his own hair wasn't perfect either today, not that he'd seen it or anything.  The former drudge rarely looked at his own reflection as it was.   He didn't like his hair; it was a funny color and had made him a target for bullies when he'd been a kid.  Ah well, whatever.  Her choice, he guessed.  He watched with interest as she began to care for her pet then smirked when the golden queen scrambled down to defend her oil from his blue.

Twit squeaked excitedly and trilled at Lovely, trying to charm her, and sent her images of the two of them flying together and chasing each other in an attempt to make friends.  The little blue fire lizard scurried around in circles, trying to goad her into playing with him.

Styxiss began to wonder if Twit was lonely before he got a glimpse the scarring that decorated Nieve's collarbone; some were peeking out of the collar of her shirt.  Being a somewhat physical person, Styx reached over and grasped her by the back of the neck and pulled her closer.  The young man peered down her shirt and saw the myriad of nasty scars decorating her shoulders and back.  He traced a finger over one or two and whistled long and low, "The fuck, kid?  Who'd you piss off t'get all these?" he asked, frowning again.

“Might’ve been the first thing you noticed but I bet it didn’t make you want to talk to me.” Her wherrynest hair was kind of like a shield, throwing off most would-be tormentors or other unsightly persons. Again, though, it seemed his observations had more of a negative effect on her than she was comfortable with. She felt very small and stupid beside him. Maybe she’d wash her hair soon.

Nieve shook her head, curtaining the majority of her face with her locks and trying to hide her expression. She knew she wasn’t smiling any longer and she really didn’t want to look like a pouting child. Wanting a distraction, she reached down and brushed her firelizard aside so she could pick up the oil again. “Shoo, Lovely,” Nieve muttered.

The gold might’ve minded except that Twit was distracting her. This was probably the longest amount of time she’d invested in one of her own kind since she hatched, and she wasn’t sure still if she liked it. The blue was trying hard to appease her, and she knew that, but his efforts were still a little charming. After watching him do a few laps and pounced toward him, and the momentum would send her (and him, unless he dodged) into the water.

The ensuing splash of water sent droplets flying everywhere. Lovely squawked with something close to indignation, though it might’ve been triumph, too. The firelizard didn’t mind baths, though, and so she stayed there treading water like she’d been born into it. It was, however, the second time Nieve found herself startled that night. She nearly lost her clutch on the glass jar. She fumbled for a second to gather her hold on it again.

Then Styxiss was suddenly quite near. The touch of his hand on her neck was too sudden, she wasn’t ready for it and unable to resist it. Instead she used the jar like an anchor, white knuckling it as his fingers probed her collar bone. “Shards,” she spat at him, twisting to try to get away, “Didn’t your ma teach you not to grab people?”

She reluctantly let one hand fall from the jar and used it to motion to Lovely and Twit. “Firelizard got me a couple months ago.” The memory was a painful one, especially adding to it the events following her healing ward stay.

Nieve’s eyes burned, she felt like crying and wasn’t entirely sure why. Stiffening her upper lip, she beckoned once more for her gold. “Now stop distracting me, please.” There wasn’t a whole lot of strength behind that request and Lovely seemed unwilling to leave her pool.

Styxiss raised both brows in surprise at her startled reaction.  He laughed and let her go easily enough however, "'Distractin' you?  Pfffft, you walked in on me, Sunshine.  Remember?" he scoffed, curling his top lip in a sort of amused sneer.  This was genuinely entertaining, "And take a look at me, girlie, does it look like I had any kind of ma growin' up?" he gestured to himself in a grand sweeping motion and narrowed his eyes,  "Yer a mean little thing ain'tcha?  Heh.  No wonder that flit wanted a piece of you."

He leaned back onto his elbows and regarded her with a pointed glare, "Besides, I'm still here talkin' to ya, ain't I?  I don't care how you look," he said, going back to the former conversation.  "And I've seen you around, spying on people.  Don't think I haven't.  You wanna be sneaky? I getcha.  Just so's ya know though, hacking your hair off sure won't help you much. You'd really stand out then, y'know? Be a shame too.  Yer probably not too bad-looking underneath all that,"  he lifted his chin in her direction.  "You could probably use that to yer advantage a lot better than the whole 'I'm a grimy little weyrbrat' deal y'got goin' on right now.  Most women do."

The former drudge spat to the side and turned his attention to the golden flit; she'd tackled Twit into the water and the two of them had grappled a bit before she'd taken to bathing.  Twit was beside himself with glee at the prospect of play and had scrambled back up out of the puddle only to dive right back in.  This might be a good way to make sure he stayed somewhat clean.  The little blue seemed to want to mimic Lovely's behavior, and it saved him the trouble of having to bathe him.  Again Styxiss wondered if he should find another flit egg somewhere; just to keep Twit company, if anything.  Not because he liked the firelizards or anything.  Definitely not.  Which reminded him...

Suddenly, with an easy fluid speed, Styxiss sat up and snatched the small jar from Nieve's hand and examined it closely, "You don't mind if I borrow this fer a minute do ya, Sunshine?  I seem t'remember you telling me that you'd be my friend.  Get me what I need and whatnot, yea?  You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, what do ya think?"

Her naivety was painful. Here Nieve thought she had this whole world, and her place in it, figured out. These short conversations, though, sent her mind spiralling in a frantic way. They grasping for whatever handhold she could to pull herself back on track. It was almost exhausting.

Contemplative silence followed Styxiss’s suggestion. She wasn’t a stranger to a female’s ability to tempt and trick. Nieve had even done it once or twice, although she wasn’t too aware at the time. There was something more rewarding, though, to use one’s wit over good looks to get what you wanted. She was finding, however, that her wit wasn’t as great as previously thought.

Nieve sucked in a breath and kicked her heels against the rock beneath her. It was easier to look toward the ceiling at the moment, but the sudden jolt of the jar taken out of her hands brought her head sharply down. “Hey!”

Her initial reaction was to shove into his shoulder until her mind caught up with what he’d said. Oh, yeah, that was the agreement she’d proposed. “Whatever,” she mumbled.

Nieve mimed having an invisible container in her hands, making the motion to unscrew the lid and then pour the contents into a hand. “See, you do like this.” Each movement was exaggerated and slow. “And then you get your flit and go over every spot. Super simple.”

Lovely still remained in the water. She was doing little acrobatic dives and flips around Twit, showing off more than she needed to.

Styx narrowed ice-blue eyes at the girl as she needlessly demonstrated how to open the jar.  This little so-and-so seemed to think he was awfully stupid, didn't she.  Interesting.  Well, he supposed that was okie dokie by him.  Always best to be underestimated... even if it was by a little sawed-off runt.  Still though, by the looks of her sullen expression, and how she was glancing around at everything except him, he guessed that his previous words had had some impact on her.  On this he said nothing however, only nodded and did as she instructed.

He whistled, short and sharp, the sound echoing off the walls of the cavern and rebounding, "Oi, Twit! Want some of this? Get yer ugly blue ass over here," he beckoned, holding the jar of oil up for the little lizard to see and waggling it enticingly.

The flit had been watching Goldie's intricate flips and loops, entranced, but his head popped up immediately at his owner's call.  With a happy cry, the little addled firelizard flew over to Styxiss in a blue streak and plastered himself around the man's face.  Used to this behavior by now, the young man merely peeled the animal away and dumped some of the oil on him, making sure to work it in all over.  Twit's blue hide immediately started to develop a pretty iridescent sheen to it, and it was clear that the flit was enjoying the extra attention.

Huh. Look at that. Guess I oughta get some of this stuff after all, he thought with a half-smile.  The flit's antics were sort of endearing; might as well keep some on hand, yea?

He glanced over at the kid; her frowning face seemed to be locked into that expression and he wondered what she had to be so angry about all the time.  Then again, by the looks of her, she was a drudge.  Like he used to be.  That alone would suffice.

"So, uh, I dunno if you know already but I'm Styxiss.  Or Styx.  Whichever.  This here is Twit," he held up the flit by his tail.  Twit didn't seem to mind this and responded by beginning to swing back-and-forth, trilling happily.  "I don't think I  caught yer name yet, though."  Late introductions were better than nothing, weren't they?

Lovely didn’t seem to appreciate being abandoned. She chirruped darkly, pulling herself also out of the water and crawling to Nieve. She gave a piteous cry and furled her still-growing wings, the webbing slapping against her bonded’s arm and face.

“Watch it!” Nieve rebuked, throwing her own hands up to shield her face from further assault. The firelizard slapped at the girl one final time before settling like a feline on her lap. Begrudgingly, Nieve began to scritch Lovely’s eyeridges, spurring some kind of purr from the gold. The both of them watched as Twit had his oiling and the girl couldn’t help the little smirk of triumph that laced itself across her lips.

Continuing the roller coaster of emotions- one day she’d learn to mask them, Nieve’s smirk fell again as he introduced himself. Her earlier thought was confirmed, he didn’t actually remember her, or at least her name. Perhaps, though, that was for the best.

Nieve’s fingers stilled in their attentions to Lovely and instead motioned to the gold firelizard. “This is Lovely, she ain’t full grown yet but when she is, she’s gonna be huge.” The flit was her only real ‘belonging’ and despite the queen’s rather poor manners, Nieve was intensely proud of her. Lovely even rose to the occasion, stretching herself up and picking a pose she felt best showed off the pale glory of her hide.

The drudge allowed a long pause before she decided on her own introduction. She faintly remembered the embarrassment of her last, an attempt to sound far more important than she really was. No, this time she thought it best to keep it simple. “And I’m Nieve, a drudge if you didn’t figure already.”

Her hand that had been framing Lovely curled as such that she was now pointing at Styxiss and the oil he still had. “Gonna share that? Me ‘n her have it down quick, we don’t need much.”
