Guest Info Plot & Events

Current Month
4.2590 A.R.
9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every 4 or 5 OOC days. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Today is a Mess [ 2.4.2590; 1 PM ] || Candidates
« on: February 01, 2017, 11:43:20 PM »
O’sir didn’t normally find himself wanting an Assistant. Typically the Brown rider was rather weirdly possessive of his job, not trusting another to handle things the way he thought they should be. But on a day like today, even he had to admit that one would be… useful. All of the riders that usually volunteered their time for the Candidates, other than himself, would no doubt be busy dealing with the fallout of everything that had just happened in the damn Weyr Hall.

Inconvenient.

Originally, O’sir had intended to simply direct his Candidates to their classroom. They’d be having class there after lunch anyway, and at least now they’d be out of the way of anyone who’d escaped being rounded up in the Weyr Hall but still held a grudge. They might not be dragon riders themselves just yet, but that wouldn’t necessarily stop someone angry and stupid from taking a swing at them. And the Candidate Master would be damned if he let one of his students be harmed through his own negligence.

Which meant, ultimately, that once things had died down a bit at the Healer Hall, he would need to escort those there that needed attention. Colvin, at the very least, and any others who had potentially sustained injuries in the fight. O’sir hated that it meant he’d likely have to cut class short, or even leave them unattended in the classroom for half a candlemark or so. But it would probably be necessary.

Even so, he knew that they would no doubt have… questions. Some that might even be coming to him after class to revoke Candidacy, now or in the coming days. Things had gotten out of hand. And if they couldn’t take it, then—it might be harsh, but it would be better for them in the long run if they did not continue trying to Impress.

As he left the Weyr Hall, Colvin followed him. Fortunately, the Candidate classroom and O’sir’s office were not far. So it was in short order that the Brown rider held the door open for Colvin and then stepped inside after him.

He would let Colvin take a seat, no doubt careful of the lash on his back. “Our class will be short today,” he announced once he’d crossed to the front of the room, standing in front of his own desk, “since I will have to take some of you to the Healer Hall. But you are welcome to stay here if it will make you feel safer for the time being.”

Strict and serious he might be, but he was not heartless.

“But it will probably be best if we wait a few minutes for the Healers to tend to those going there after receiving lashes. I’m sure some of you have questions about what just happened.” A number of hands would shoot up, he was sure. And O’sir was, if nothing else, a practical and honest man. He would do his best to answer whatever they asked.

Colvin’s steps faltered on his way to a desk when O’sir announced to the class that today’s lessons would be short because he needed to take some of them to the Healer Hall. He hesitated for a long moment. He should just turn around and walk right back out then and there. But he couldn’t. Not after having been so worried that he would be leaving the Weyr Hall no longer a Candidate.

Still, he glared and as he passed the desk where Oarlen sat, he unceremoniously dropped the green flit in his arms onto it, Canopy skittering and struggling to keep her footing on the smooth wood. “You dropped this.” He snapped, barely looking at Oarlen as he made his way to an empty desk.

He didn’t bother to try to sit in the chair with his back throbbing like it was. Instead he slid on top of the desk, a defiant “go ahead and tell me to get off” look on his face.

“What’s there to question?” He called out. “The Holders and Crafters proved today that they shouldn’t be the ones making decisions. They approached sharding Jungle Wing. They deserved what they got.” They. Him. Did it matter?

She had expected some strong reactions and emotions to everything that had just gone down, which made it easier for her when it came to snuggling with Tavi who was crooning with worry and absolutely refusing to leave her side. It was a pleasant source of reassurance to have someone who was so concerned and worried but Sionnan wanted to calm him down now.

It would be for the best after all. Now that everything appeared to be sorted "They might have deserved it but it doesn't mean people don't have questions...I mean what is going to be done to stop something like this , well happening again?" she might not have challenged Colvin so directly but instead concentrated solely on the matter of addressing O'sir, something that always made her a little bit nervous. But she wouldn't back down either, even when she stuttered. No, she asked her questions and addressed those who made her nervous; she'd learned about embracing fear and not running away.

"This is about everything coming to a head right? They did it the wrong way, but...it doesn't mean it can't happen again or that the holders weren't allowed to have worries..." it might not be the most politically correct opinion but she was absolutely convinced that her own was no less valid than anyone elses.

Styx had managed to finish his meal in relative peace.  He'd mostly tried to ignore the arguing and lashings and fighting, fading into the background as he usually did when trouble was brewing but he wasn't directly involved in it.  When he'd finally escaped the hall and wandered into the classroom, there'd already been candidates gathered.  O'sir was at the head and taking questions.

Styxiss didn't have any queries.  It was fairly obvious to him what had happened; one group of people had disagreed with another group of people about something important.  Therefore, a huge fight had broken out.  It was how humans behaved while living in close-quarters with one another, were highly stressed, and their options limited.  He'd seen it before and he would most likely see it again many times before he died.  Groups of humans had the ability to rage out of control with merely a spark.  Throw violence into the mix and you had a recipe for disaster.  Not to mention lasting repercussions.

"They might have deserved it but it doesn't mean people don't have questions...I mean what is going to be done to stop something like this , well happening again?  This is about everything coming to a head right? They did it the wrong way, but...it doesn't mean it can't happen again or that the holders weren't allowed to have worries..."

He plopped himself into a desk chair and glanced at the girl who'd spoken.  It would absolutely happen again.  And again.  And again.  There might be pauses in between the friction, but tensions would mount until something had to give.  It's just how humans were.  Or so it seemed to him in his experience anyhow.

Twit began to chatter excitedly, happy to be included in Styx's day-to-day activities.  The former drudge shooshed him and quickly gave him a tidbit from his food pouch to shut him up.

« Reply #4 on: February 02, 2017, 03:46:06 PM »
Oarlen had taken a moment prior to entering the candidate's classroom to steady himself. To try and stop the shame he felt at abandoning Colvin from showing on his face. O'sir had told him to leave. Shards. Colvin had told him to go. But that didn't stop the ache in his heart.

As he entered the room, he didn't look at any of the other candidates already amassed there, looking only so far as to find an empty seat and  sit down, hands clasped on the desk in front of him and eyes looking no further then it's edge.

A heartbeat later, his solemn blue, hide glistening from his recent stint to the baths popped out of between. Crooning a greeting to his clutchbrother before mirroring the browns position as he usually did, anchoring himself to Oarlen's arm and clutching tightly to the boy, head resting on his shoulder as he hummed softly. Despite the wet body that clutched him, Oarlen did not make a move to shift the blue flit, that was, until the door opened and Colvin swaggered on in, closely followed by the candidate master himself.

"To the wall" Oarlen ordered in a soft whisper, thinking as hard as he could at the two flits on his arms. The Blue obliged immediately, if not happily, disentangling himself and doing a quick circle of Oarlen's desk, a quick chirp of greeting to the green that was heading in their direction before he fluttered off to find a perch in the room that wasn't his bonded's body.

Freckles was not so obliging. Hissing his discontentment with the order and chittering sharply in reprimand. When Oarlen pushed his order again the brown glared before disappearing between, a faint anger the only warning Oarlen had that the little fire lizard was about to trash his room.

So much for training them

He looked up as Colvin stopped in front of him, his face reddening despite the older boy's usual, cocky appearance. "Thanks" he muttered, before looking away, hands coming apart to give the green some assistance before pushing her away from him with the same command he'd give his other two flits. His ears burned as he listened to Colvin's footsteps die away, he couldn't gather the energy to look a the other candidate, uncertain as to what he would see when he did.

If it weren't for him, Colvin wouldn't have been taken and lined up against the wall.

He would make it up to the candidate. No matter how long it took, Oarlen would not let Colvin's self-sacrifice go unrewarded. O'sir had already made it clear that he wasn't allowed to get lashed. Made it pretty clear that no-one should have been lashed. At least out of the candidates. So he'd have to find some other way to make it up to Colvin.

Once Canopy had said her greeting, she too popped between, though it was only so she didn't have to bother taking off, appearing in the air near the blue dragon and forcing him to make space so she could join him. The harsh shrill she used to do so prefacing the beginnings of the candidate responses to O'sir's words.

Oarlen lifted his head and paid attention to each candidate that spoke first, not fully understanding Colvin's statement, and finding himself annoyed that the first few words were about the fight itself, how it was expected and would be repeated.

Oarlen didn't give a wherry's feathers about why the fight happened or what reasons there were behind it. He didn't even care if it happened again. He already knew what he'd be doing. He'd drag Colvin out of there is what he would do next time. His flits would help him. Perhaps he'd even have a dragon that could force Colvin to get out of the way of the brawl.

That's what he'd be doing if it happened again.

That's about all he could do to make it up to the other candidate.

In any case, Oarlen raised his hand. Waiting for the time when he could speak himself. "What happened with the weyrwomen. And why did people who hadn't done anything wrong get punished?" He was curious about how vocal the golds were, as well as the contrasting reactions between Eimarra and Halirina, though his tone implied he was more interested in why Colvin, and the other candidates who hadn't gotten out, had been required to undergo the same punishment regardless of their guilt in the matter.

Thiis gladly escaped the madness of the kitchens when she saw O'sir wildly motioning. She couldn't hear his words over the roar of the hall, but she could very well guess what he was saying.

"Gotta go!" she called out to the others in the kitchen before running out, keeping herself close to the wall until she cleared the hall. She left the noise behind her as she made her way to the classroom -- lessons were after lunch, anyways, so she figured she'd be sent here.

She and the others in the room waited until O'sir finally arrived -- Colvin in tow. Thiis didn't miss the look he shot O'sir when he sat on top of a desk close to her. There was a story behind that.

"Are you okay?" she hissed to Colvin, pretending to pay attention while Sionaann said something.

« Reply #6 on: February 02, 2017, 08:42:17 PM »
Cabryn felt like she was going to be sick. She had really thought she was becoming what a dragonrider should be. It had been hard trying to reconcile the traditions and opinions she’d been brought up on with how the riders lived and she finally thought she was getting the hang of it. But now… she didn’t know.

The elder candidate had always been one of the first to tell the complaining holders and crafters to shut up and get on with it. They were all chafing at being so confined, they were all scared of the Hunters, they all wanted to revive the Pern that used to be including the craft halls and a proper hold, but there were struggles to mount before that could happen and complaining about it instead of getting on with it was just stupid.

That was before the lockdown had been called.

Obviously she understood the weyrwoman’s reasoning to halt construction, she understood the dragonriders need to protect their own, but she couldn’t understand how they justified leaving the crafters at the minehall. Dragonriders were protectors. That was why she wanted to be among them. Protecting the people meant everything to her. Abandoning them… was not what dragonmen did. It couldn’t be.

She kept expecting the weyrwoman to order they be retrieved, or to have supplies sent over, or even just a scout to check on them. But it hadn’t happened. And as the holders and crafters complaints had gotten louder and more insistent, she felt… ashamed. Ashamed that she’d idolised the riders who were… abandoning the people they swore to protect.

She’d just been dropping into the weaver craft rooms to check her chores for the week, still having to divide her time between her previous craft and candidate chores simply because weavers were always needed in the weyr, and she’d made it back to the hall in time to see the end of the riot. Even now, she couldn’t really understand what actually happened. She’d seen the crafters be hauled up to the wall for lashes, she’d seen a junior weyrwoman dragged out of the room, dragonriders calmly lifting tunics for lashes of their own, actually given a choice rather than the humiliation, some smirking while they hissed through the pain. And… she’d done nothing.

Nothing but snap to attention as a rider ordered everyone out of the hall. She saw the Candidate Master marching out with other candidates, at least one of which had blood seeping through the back of his tunic, and followed silently. Jaw clenched, shoulders back, stomach roiling.

Thoughts raced through her head, most of them attempting to justify everything that happened. The riders had been punished at least. It would have only lent credence to the holder’s complaints if they’d got off scot free. But… if the riders had just listened to them in the first place. Well, not the riders in general, the weyr leadership. They had been the ones who abandoned those stranded at the crafthall, they had been the ones who ignored and dismissed the crafters concerns, how much could the holders be blamed for the violence when it was the only way to make the leaders listen?

Even as she thought it she knew that wasn’t how dragonriders worked. She shouldn’t be justifying the holders violence, she shouldn’t be questioning the weyr leadership, she should be admiring the skill of the riders to handle the situation and their ability to take the same punishment as befitting of their crime… but she just felt sick.

Standing off to one side of the room, she nodded meekly at O’sir’s explanation of the shortened class. When he asked about questions… Cabryn couldn’t think of anything for a little bit. It was only after the other candidates spoke up that her mind started working again.

“The Holders and Crafters proved today that they shouldn’t be the ones making decisions. They approached sharding Jungle Wing. They deserved what they got.” That made her angry. Taking a deep breath, Cabryn briefly closed her eyes, mustering the patience she had carefully learnt when dealing with her children.

“The crafters weren’t making decisions. That’s the whole issue. They weyr didn’t care about their problems and dismissed their concerns as if they were nothing. They had no say in any decisions and that was the problem. Your disregard right now is the exact reason this happened.” Cabryn pushed the words as politely as she could. They were clipped and pointed, but that was as much as she could muster. How could they not know even now that this was the whole problem. She didn’t fault Cole for being angry, he’d clearly received a lash he didn’t deserve, but she couldn’t give up hope on trying to be sensible. Cole had been in Candidate lessons for a long time, just like she had, and although she’d never really gotten to know him well, she had more respect for him to listen than other actual dragonriders. She could be wrong though, this lockdown was forcing out things in people that she hadn’t guessed they were capable of.

Another candidate spoke up too, "they might have deserved it but it doesn't mean people don't have questions...I mean what is going to be done to stop something like this, well happening again?  This is about everything coming to a head right? They did it the wrong way, but...it doesn't mean it can't happen again or that the holders weren't allowed to have worries..." The comment made Cabryn take another deep breath. It was a good question, what was the weyr going to do? Were they only going to make the lives of the crafters and holders worse? It’s not like their voices were being heard anyway so the only thing the weyr could do to make things worse for them would be purposeful.

That thought made Cabryn cold inside. The internal question had come unbidden to her. Would the weyr purposefully make the lives of the Crafters and Holders worse as punishment? She didn’t know the answer. She was standing for a dragon, not knowing if when she impressed, if she impressed, if she would have to punish the crafters for being angry about their families being abandoned. Her husband… even if she hated him, was in that minehall. The father of her children. Could she punish other wives for being worried? If the weyr asked… could she do it?

The answer was no. So where did that leave her?

Lifting her eyes to the Candidate Master she waited for him to answer. If he wasn’t sure of what the weyr would do…
Lovers welcome!

« Reply #7 on: February 02, 2017, 11:23:08 PM »
Quite a lot of questions, naturally—and it surprised O’sir not at all that his students didn’t agree on what all this meant either. They all came from different backgrounds, as riders had increasingly done throughout the course of the 9th Pass. Some, he knew, had been born to Holder or Crafter stock themselves. And even if they weren’t, no doubt some that were the children of Weyrfolk or Riders felt conflicted about all this too. With as tightly packed into the weyr as all the survivors were, more and more had friends or loved ones from all walks of life.

So, despite his own feelings that both sides were flawed in their own ways, O’sir had to ride a carefully neutral line in all this. He addressed what Colvin and Sionann had said first; he didn’t suppose he could blame Colvin for the way he felt, but… others might not be so sympathetic. And the Candidate Master would prefer that his classroom didn’t end up as divided as the Weyr Hall had if he could at all help it.

“People who are desperate do not always make the soundest decisions. They may also have intended their approaching of Jungle Wing to be a diplomatic gesture. Acknowledging the sacrifices that members of that Wing made to protect them during the last attack. I do not know their reasoning.” And while it didn’t necessarily make sense to him either, O’sir would do his best to explain it in a way that the Candidates themselves could rationalize.

“Sionann is right. This resulted from things going on too tensely too long.” Faintly, he sighed. “Despite how it may appear, this is largely because everyone on both sides cares so much, instead of not caring at all. But when people get angry, it’s easier for them to generalize those they’re opposed to, to believe that their differing opinions comes from negligence or stupidity rather than equally valid if different concerns.

“The fact of the matter is, this entire situation has gotten messy on both sides. Both have made decisions that, being able to make them again, they might do differently. Would probably do differently. I’m sure a lot of non-riders think that the Weyrleadership decided upon the lockdown out of anger, but that’s not the case. Those in the Mine Hall were not abandoned; they were told that the Wings were withdrawing, in order to give them time to heal and regroup after the attack. There are members of the Healer Hall there in case of work injuries. And they were already ready to live there full-time when the first transfer was made. Some also, no doubt, think the Senior Weyrwoman cruel. But she will not leave people to starve.”

O’sir disliked just standing at the front of his classroom delivering a lecture. But in this case… it was necessary, hopefully so that they would be able to see the sides they might not have considered. To understand that none of this had happened in a vacuum, and that those they might disagree with did not necessarily believe what they did for the reasons others thought.

“It is regrettable that some got lashed who may have done nothing wrong.” His eyes flicked to Colvin for a fraction of a second. “But the public lashing, on both sides, was precisely to prove the point that this is not acceptable. And to deter it from happening again. Ideally, it won’t.

“This does, however, put the Weyrleadership in a bad position. I have no doubt they were already intending to restore contact with Mine Hall. But now, when they inevitably do so, it will appear that they did so because of this. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you all how dangerous that is.”

The entire fiasco had just made him… tired. When would these tensions end? O’sir hoped he’d get to see it happen in his lifetime. Or at least for them to diminish. But with all of his Candidates watching him now, he had to choose his words carefully. Had to make them understand.

“The Weyrleadership is not petty. It is not vengeful. It does not do things without reason. And I’ve explained to you before why dragon riders receive lashes the way they do. They’re meant as a quick and efficient punishment, and in most cases—except for the most severe or repeated instances—that is all a given punishment entails. I’m sure the Senior Weyrwoman meant the lashes for both sides today to be exactly that. She is not going to let innocent people starve in Mine Hall because of a riot today. She may be severe, but she is fair, and she only wants to do what is best for everyone. I’m sure Halirina doesn’t want anyone forced to stay in the weyr be any more than they wish to be. But until we have the resources to make that happen… there are going to be those on both sides who think the others do not care about them.”

He glanced at Cabryn then; though she phrased her counter diplomatically, he could tell she was upset. O’sir made a note to seek her out and speak to her later if she didn’t come to him herself. So, almost gently, he added, “Disregard from both sides, I think. None of those involved are entirely blameless in this; at the start of the lockdown, the Holders and Crafters were told to direct their requests to the Weyrleadership itself. But to my knowledge, none of them have done so.”

Sighing faintly, the Candidate Master pinched the bridge of his nose. “In answer to your first question, Oarlen, Junior Weyrwoman Eimerra clearly does not agree with Halirina’s judgment in this situation. But the way that she voiced her concerns… was not proper conduct for any rider, let alone one bonded to a Queen. I’m afraid she’s done more harm than help to the Holders and Crafters by doing so, and she will no doubt be disciplined as well for violating the order of a Senior Weyrwoman.”

Cole couldn’t sit still, and not because of his usually anxious energy either, not even because of his worry of O’sir’s plan to take him and anyone else who needed it to the Healer Hall, but because even with not sitting in the actual chair—no position was comfortable. And catch 22, his back ached and stiffened when he sat in one place too long but sharp zings shot up through the muscles of his back any time he moved.

When Thiis’ whispered to him, he glanced down at her and grinned. “Don’t you worry sweetheart, I’m still fine as ever.” He assured her, his usual smile bright as ever though there was a hint of pain in his eyes. “Don’t worry, if you want you can come see me later and kiss it all better.” He winked and then glanced back up to the Candidate Master as he began to answer some of the questions that had been asked.

Colvin was uncharacteristically not an ass while O’sir spoke, meaning he didn’t interrupt and actually seemed to be listening.

’People who are desperate do not always make the soundest decisions’. Shit. Wasn’t that the truth.

’Despite how it may appear, this is largely because everyone on both sides cares so much’ And this is why Colvin had relied on apathy for so long. It was safer not to care.

When the Candidate Master’s eyes flicked to him, Colvin caught it, holding the man’s brief gaze unwaveringly. Once the other questions were answered, Cole spoke up again.

“It will probably happen again. I mean, this is already just history repeating itself isn’t it.” He didn’t say the word but it hung there, like a giant invisible blinking neon sign, Nabol. Nabol. Nabol.

“And this is why people shouldn’t care. Caring just makes people fearful and worried. And people who are afraid make stupid decisions.”

Afraid for the little girl you tried so hard to protect and keep safe that you stupidly put yourself between her and a bronzer willing and able to beat the life from you. Afraid to repeat the damage you did to your sister so you stupidly push away what few friends you have. Afraid you won’t have the strength to say no to the Healers so you stupidly think letting your wounds go untreated is a good idea.

After being rescued and pulled from the thick of the riot all voices had pointed her in the direction of the Healers- at least until O’sir’s order came in. Her rational side was still lost somewhere, buried beneath adrenaline and a potential concussion. Saviavi wanted to discuss the riot, she didn’t want to see the doctor. She headed for the classroom.

Most of her fellow candidates looked grim and worried. She was still grinning stupidly. The delicate politics of the weyr were a lost cause to her, she only knew that the dragonriders were in the right and everything they did was simply because they wanted to. That was why she wanted to Impress, and probably also why she hadn’t yet Impressed.

The silly girl fell into a chair. Despite her enthusiasm for the subject, Saviavi was content to simply listen (or rather, sit in a daze). She was able to follow the jist of it, though, even giving a few halfhearted “Yeahs!” in support of the handsome Colvin and the more mildly spoken Sionann.

When O’sir got down to the nitty gritty details, though, her attention wavered. It was all weyr this, leader that, and at the mention of lashes her eyes were back on Colvin and well, his back. Was she going to be lashed? Savi frowned. She could count on one hand how many scars she had, and where they each had come from, but a whole lash was more than all of those combined. She’d never be able to wear a backless top again! Her lip quivered.

Saviavi turned very abruptly and faced the corner she’d sat herself in. The motion made her vision swim.

"Do you know what will be done to prevent it from happening again? Do you think they'll start talking to the right place or is it only going to build up until it does the same thing" while O'sir was keen to reassure them that didn't mean he was answering to the issues about getting things sorted. This time though the words she spoke were far softer and more mumbled, so he probably wouldn't happen. He might not know, and Sionann didn't want to put additional pressure on him at this difficult time.

Instead her attention shifted to a familiar face "Saviavi? Are you alright?" she asked, concern and anxious worry obvious as he edged her way over, moving past a few other people.

The tension in Cabyrn’s chest eased little by little as O’sir spoke. Her jaw didn’t unlock and her stomach didn’t completely settle, but at least she felt she could breathe easier.

Cabryn had always had the highest respect for the Candidate Master, if the weyr leadership ever thought her good enough, and if she ever impressed, she would have loved to be an assistant to O’sir. Being any dragonrider was an honour, but helping to train and prepare the future generations of riders was a calling she felt very strongly. Especially given her own problems with impressing, she felt it could have been the best place for her. But only if she managed to keep her temper in check. Clearly the brown rider she’d spent the last two years in lessons with had far greater patience and it mollified Cabryn even more than his actual words. Until he said ”The Weyrleadership is not petty. It is not vengeful. It does not do things without reason.”

Those words saw Cabryn close her eyes in relief. She struggled to keep herself from sighing too loud or losing her composure. If O’sir said that this would be the end of the punishment, she could believe and respect it. She left them closed for a long while, only to flick them towards the Candidate Master and away again when he called her out. It was fair enough, and she did have the grace to blush, although she didn’t regret what she’d said.

Cabryn listened to the rest of O’sir’s speech with her eyes downcast. She felt better about the whole incident… but the question of her candidacy was still… iffy. Could she be a dragonrider if she respected a brown riders opinion more than her own weyrwomans? Especially with the words ”was not proper conduct for any rider” swirling around her head. Cabryn wasn’t sure if she wouldn’t have acted differently than Eimerra, Cabryn wasn’t sure if she could act differently, not and still be her.

She was content with letting the rest of the conversation drift over her, too lost in her own thought and regrowing tension in her stomach when Sionann’s quiet query penetrated. Lifting her head to look around, Cabryn also took a few steps towards Saviavi. Really, Cabryn didn’t know very many of her fellow candidates all that well, but watching the younger girls lip quiver was enough to make Cabryn concerned, given it wasn’t regular behaviour for the girl at all. She reached out slowly to rest her hand on the girls arm.

The mood was somber and heavy. Karou had been in the Hall when the fighting had started but she hadn’t been a part of the brawling. After being knocked into once or twice, people eager to join the fray and get out some of their pent-up anger and not quick to notice the small girl, she’d back out of there quick. Crowds were never her thing, the press of people all around her, most of who were bigger than she was made her panic. She’d been in fights before but those were Hold yard scrapes and skirmishes, nothing like the mess in the Hall.

She slid into a seat in the classroom, twirling one of her charcoal pencils in her fingers for something to keep her hands occupied. She’d long since run out of paper in her journal to doodle in, her cavern wall now her only source for letting lose her creative energies. There was a lot of confliction about everything that had happened.

Karou was uncharacteristically quiet as people all around her spoke up and spoke out about their opinions on the matter. She listened to all of them, curious and interested in what they thought and why they thought it. She was still fairly new to Candidacy, less than half a turn, so she felt a strong sense of kindred to her Crafter and Holder background. Still, the Weyr and its culture had opened so many wonderful doors to her and been significantly integral in her growth as a person in the last six months that she had a hard time saying who was right and who was wrong.

Maybe that was just it. No one was right or wrong here. They were just…angry, frustrated, scared.

“What can we do to help?” Karou pipped up finally. After all, the Candidates, at least in her mind, were in a unique situation. Many of them, like herself, came from Holder and Crafter backgrounds and because they had not yet Impressed, still straddled that invisible line that seemed to divide the Weyrfolk from the Holdfolk. They had no dragons whose dependency on them firmly planted them on the side of the Weyr, sure there were riders who were sympathetic to the Holders and Crafters but when it came down to it, the dragons and the Weyr were their priority.

Karou was fairly certain O’sir’s answer would be that there wasn’t much they could do, line straddlers or not, they were in limbo, with very little rank and pull among…well…anyone. But it was worth asking. She hated feeling useless. And it was the same drive that would have her in the Healer Hall after class was let out early, not because she needed any tending too but because she could be of help there given her Healer knowledge. Besides, it was her nameday and given the riot and craziness, she knew her mother would want to see her today of all days.

Oarlen tried to listen to what O’sir was saying. It was important, after all. But all his attention was on Colvin as he fidgeted constantly. His mouth was turned down in an uncharacteristic scowl, unsure of what he could do for the older candidate.

As O’sir mentioned his name, however, Oarlen’s head snapped to his teacher’s face, frown deepening at what he felt was not a satisfactory answer. Moreso that he didn’t see how the behavior was acceptable at all, though a part of him was glad that she wouldn’t go unpunished. He couldn’t help feeling as though if she hadn’t been so persistent with her… opinion on the situation, Colvin would have had more time to get himself out of the hall regardless of him causing the candidate to dally.

He did at least gather that no further punishment would befall Colvin since he already got lashed, so at least he wasn’t going to be single handedly responsible for the candidate being booted from candidacy. One less thing to weigh on his conscience, at least.

It was with a slightly calmer façade that Oarlen listened to Colvin’s somewhat snide comments about not caring, and he found himself searching the Firelizards decorating the room for Colvin’s blue. Despite his words, he knew that Colvin cared about some things. He cared enough to get him out of the hall, after all. And he wouldn’t have Vic if he hadn’t cared to feed the ‘flit to bond in the first place. Chewing on his lip as he realised the blue wasn’t around, he sent a request to his three flits, asking them to track the blue down and tell him that Colvin would need him. There was no guarantee that they would be successful, but all three disappeared between with barely a chirp. Even Freckles, who rarely liked leaving Oarlen’s side disappeared between without fuss, rattled enough by the recent events to obey without question. At least at that point in time.

If they couldn’t find Vic, he’d have Canopy keep an eye on Colvin for the next day or so… In part because he’d like to know Colvin was physically OK, but mostly because he was worried about how Colvin was feeling… And any one of his Firelizards would at least be able to warn him if Colvin decided to self-sabotage his future with the candidates. Oarlen wanted to be a dragonrider beside Colvin one day. He would much rather that then seeing Colvin walk off the sands that final time without a dragonet by his side, let alone being forced out because of some petty misdemeanor.

He returned to the conversation with a murmur of agreement though as Karou asked what they could do to help. That was within his area of expertise. If O’sir had any idea for how they could assist, he would be willing to do that in a heartbeat. The more they could do to prevent the fight from happening in future the better.

Colvin’s cynicism did not surprise him, but O’sir still had to stifle another sigh. It was disheartening, after all the progress that Colvin seemed to have been making, that this would happen now. And under such circumstances. O’sir couldn’t help but feel as though he was inevitably going to lose that battle. And despite all the frustrations that the Candidate always brought him, the fact that Colvin had finally seemed to be growing made him hate this all the more.

“People are afraid, yes. But that doesn’t necessarily mean history is repeating itself. Especially if we remain aware of that history.”

Despite the quietness of Sionann’s questions, O’sir did hear them. He’d long honed the ability to hear his students muttering or mumbling, and it had often proved useful. “I won’t lie to you; all of you deserve more from me than that. Without speaking to the Weyrleadership in the coming days, I don’t know how they intend to handle this or diffuse similar situations in the future. I’m sure they will come up with a plan, but I don’t yet know what form it will take.”

And an inquiry like Karou’s had been one that the Candidate Master had tried to brace for. “The best way for you to help would be to… keep an open mind. When and where it might be appropriate, encourage those you know to do the same—to try to see things from the other side, or at least understand why they are acting the way they are. You may be occupying a unique place in this situation, but I want you to remember it isn’t your responsibility to fix any of this.” They were still students, after all, and while they weren’t exactly children, O’sir still didn’t want to see them hurt if it was avoidable. “And you can also come talk to me any time you need or want.”

As he spoke, the Brown rider did notice that some of the Candidates had gathered around another, who did not look entirely well. But she hadn’t been whipped as far as he’d seen. So, endeavoring to soften the question so it didn’t seem as though he was singling her out, he asked, “Saviavi, are you alright?”

Styxiss was bored.  Oh sure, he feigned interest and concern as was expected. That much he knew enough to do.  But the whole riot earlier hadn't really fazed him like it seemed it had the others.  In fact, a cursory glance around at the other students told him that people were quite upset that it had happened.  And that such a thing was a rare occurrence around here.  How strange.  He was used to infighting and whatnot.  Camaraderie hadn't technically been in his vocabulary up until recently.

He listened to O'sir's reassurances and everyone else's questions and comments with partial interest.  Especially the part where he was assured that it wasn't his responsibility.  Well, that was a good thing wasn't it.  Seeing as he hadn't the slightest clue how to fix something like this anyhow.   Kind of like the blind leading the blind, yea?  Ah well.

He did notice a blonde girl who was fidgeting and looked a bit ill. He arched a brow at her, as did some of the other students.  A few of them even asked if she was alright.  Styx fervently hoped that she wasn't going to throw up or anything, and he eyed her with some doubt.

Ysveta remained quiet throughout the proceedings, everyone else seemed to have something to say, or to ask, or simply just to mention, so she didn't feel like anything she had to say would be any more productive to the ultimate goal. And the ultimate goal was understanding, accepting and moving on.

At least, that was how she was looking at it, and it was easy enough for her.

After O'sir's carefully thought out explanations, she too, could see both sides. The Holders were frustrated, but ultimately the Weyrleadership were not enforcing their rules to be petty, it was simply what they thought was right, and in this case, it hadn't exactly worked out. Neither party was more to blame than the other, she had seen it happen. Sure, the Holders had been the ones to start the verbalisations, but if her... cousin? Y'tol? She was still trying to sort out all the different connections in her family which seemed to be getting larger in size every time she heard about them. If Y'tol hadn't thrown the first punch, who knew whether or not it would have escalated, to what was now being called "a riot."

But Ysveta didn't mind. Sure, she didn't like the violence, but she didn't get involved. It had been a quick retreat to the corner of the Weyrhall, once punches had started being thrown, and it was then that the melody had begun to creep into her mind.

It was that rhythm that she was now tapping against her leg. Working out the kinks and the hitches of the chord progression in her head, so that hopefully, she would have most of the song worked out before she got back to the candidate barracks.

It wasn't like Ysveta had much more than a stick of charcoal to quickly jot down the melody on any available surface, and besides, she had to wash it all off eventually.
Candidates were not given paper upon which to record their compositions.
She was no longer a harper.

And so it would be a temporary recording at best, and if it was good enough, maybe she would ask for a slate and send it to the harper hall. But those days were few and far between now, candidacy was a full time position.

Honestly, she was happy were this conversation had turned. Karou had asked what they could do to help, and O'sir had said to keep an open mind and talked to him if they needed. Which is what she intended to do. She would keep an open mind and go talk to her family about this, because who could be even better than O'sir for listening? Her family.

A unique thing for Ysveta to feel, that she had a family she could turn to, but a happy feeling none the less. Besides, it was her nameday after all.

Everyone's attention suddenly turned to Saviavi, and Ysveta too, turned her gaze towards the other candidate to see whether or not she was alright.

A familiar face came into view- Sionann. Saviavi grinned at her, but then also frowned directly after. “My head hurts,” she confessed. She slowly scooted back around, her hands clutching the seat beneath her like an anchor.

Someone touched her shoulder and she flinched in surprise, not expecting more notice. “Sorry,” she murmured to Cabryn. Savi managed to pry on white-knuckled hand up to place across Cabryn’s own, patting her like a grandmother. The concern on the two faces of the candidates was enough to make her pause and try to evaluate the situation. She was not, in fact, very well.

Slow as she was to come to grips with her situation, it was the addition of O’sir’s worry that brought her to reality. The hand that had been occupied with Cabryn rose higher to her head, where she’d been kicked, and touched the area delicately. Her palm came back sticky with goopy blood that wasn’t entirely apparent thanks to the natural redwash tone of her hair. “I think I need to go see the healers?”

She became quite occupied then with getting the blood off of her skin, using her pantleg like a washcloth.

Cole rolled his eyes to the ceiling as if praying to Faranth for strength as the younger kids asked what they could do—good on them, Pern’s future was looking up with those wide-eyed innocent little mongrels ready to save the day—and everyone’s attention shifted to the pretty little Candidate sitting to the side.

He wanted to jump up and down and wave his arms and yell out “Hello?! Excuse me? You need to go to the Healer’s? I was the one lashed!"

But that much movement would be far too painful. Already the dull constant throbbing from his untreated back had begun to radiate up into his neck and then to his head. He had a headache that rivaled the ones Vic gave him when the flitter got too excited. He dropped his head into his hand, elbow propped on the empty seat as he perched on the desk top.

Still, even without the theatrics of the jumping up and down, Cole couldn’t turn down an opportunity to make it all about him.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” he drawled to Saviavi, not lifting his head fully from his palm. “I thought I was the only one bleeding here.” Technically he wasn’t bleeding anymore. The blood from the lash was dried and crusting onto his back and shirt but it was plastering the fabric to the wound and the longer he left the shirt on the more painful it was going to be for the Healer’s to remove it. “Don’t worry though, if you pass out, I’m excellent at mouth to mouth.” He gave a tired wink to accentuate the tease.

Whatever other questions or concerns the Candidates might have would have to wait until later. Inwardly, O’sir cursed himself for not noticing sooner that Saviavi had been injured. But as packed full of students as the classroom was when all eighty-some Candidates were gathered within it, she’d been somewhat hidden from view.

But a head wound could well be serious, and so Saviavi would need to be treated sooner rather than later. O’sir might have picked up basic first aid as a dragon rider, but he was not trained to recognize or deal with a concussion.

Distracted as he was, the Candidate Master only glanced briefly Colvin’s way when the boy spoke. Leave it to him to make light of something serious, especially after being lashed for protecting Oarlen. Couldn’t he ever stop being flippant? “Colvin,” he said, though without venom, “be quiet.”

To the rest, he projected his voice a bit louder again. “I need to take Saviavi and Colvin to the Healer Hall. Any others of you who may have been injured need to come with me as well. The rest of you are more than welcome to stay, though we won’t be having an official class today.” Even so, he’d not begrudge them the comfort of the familiar, and to his firelizard he projected, //Stay here.//

Thief, at least, could keep an eye on them. Proud at being given a task, the little Blue sat primly on the Candidate Master’s desk.

“She may need help walking to the Hall, depending on her injury. Cabryn, Sionann, would you be so kind?” Near as they were, and both apparently concerned for Saviavi’s well-being, O’sir had no qualms about recruiting their assistance. Especially since both were level-headed and reliable.

Spoiler for OOC:
Y’all are more than welcome to keep your Candidates talking amongst themselves in this thread if you feel so inclined. ^_^ @Kit, @Drewliet, @RaynePOTM, @Wren, let me know if you’d like to do a separate thread of them all actually going to the Healer Hall or not. I’m good for whatever either way.

Cabryn probably wouldn’t have noticed Saviavi’s injury if Sionann hadn’t said something first, and as she looked up from the awful red leaking from a gash somewhere nestled in the hair of the younger candidate, Cabryn was struck by how Sionann always had a knack for catching people at their worst and then helping regardless. Well, maybe not always, but at least with her and today.

Crooning a little as Savi patted her hand then tried to scrub the red off her hand onto her pantleg, Cabryn tried to be… supportive? Really Cabryn didn’t know what to do in this situation and she hated it. If she’d been with any of the weyrfolk or her friends she would have ordered or dragged them to the healers but, all these people were her equals, and she didn’t know Savi well enough to be so, overhanded. Shards she hated not being able to help without upsetting everything more.

Tearing her head away from the dark red colour fading into Saviavi’s pant leg, a colour that she knew she was going to associate with this awful feeling, she looked up to watch O’sir as he addressed the class. She’d missed Cole’s outburst, and didn’t understand the exchange, but she was now worried for him too. She didn’t think he’d be as accepting of sympathy though, not from her at least.

Heart swelling at O’sir’s request for her assistance, Cabryn wasn’t sure if he’d picked her because she was simply there, or if he knew that she only wanted to help. She wouldn’t put the second past him, she did have such an enormous respect for him, but he had a lot of candidates to know and he was an ever practical man. There were two people who definitely needed attention more than her at the moment, so Cabryn nodded to the candidate master and mentally scolded herself for her foolishness.

There were more important people to tend to, her stupid messed up emotions could wait, it had been a stressful day for everyone and the best thing to do would just be to shutup and help where she could. Turning back to smile at Saviavi, Cabryn asked softly, “Did you want a hand walking hon?”

Spoiler for OOC:

She would have loved to suggest that it was some special or unique skill but it was merely a talent that had developed during her time training to become a Healer - while it was no longer the path she was set to walk that didn't remove the awareness of possible injuries or lessen her determination to lend help when and wherever possible "Yes, yes you do. Cabryn could you mind helping, I think between the two of us we can get her there safely - unless...how are your legs feeling, Saviavi?" aside from being the first person she'd met Saviavi had also become her room-mate.

It mattered a great deal to Sionann that her friend should be well taken care of by whatever skills she could mange to accomplish this being the case.

"Do you feel sick at all?" they were questions which were gently spoken, Sionann had never been the sort of woman to become either aggressive or harsh in her manners towards anyone. It had once been very useful when she an apprentice, sitting and comforting the patients who needed to be soothed gently and with proper sincerity as well.

Sionann didn't let any worry or doubt creep into her voice, while she knew how serious a head wound could end up being, right now Saviavi needed her to be strong and focused on providing the sort of care that would actually be of benefit in managing to get her properly well again. That more than anything else was the way she was thinking about the whole business.

Saviavi inched forward on her seat as Colvin turned toward them. Teetering on the edge she started to giggle at him after he spoke, “We can bleed together.” She stuck her hand out toward Colvin, the one with traces of blood still on it. In her head she visualized some archaic bonding ceremony, but outwardly this only translated to her wiggling her fingers at him in a way that she thought would entice him.

O’sir’s voice tugged her back to reality. Her hand fell limply back to her leg and she tried to follow his instruction. Savi sat up a little straighter and squared her shoulders. She glanced to Cabryn and Sionann as her teacher asked for their help, and felt a pang of shame. “I can walk,” she protested. To prove the point, she pushed herself up suddenly from the seat. The room swam again for a second and one of her hands shot out to grip whatever, or whoever, was nearest. She closed her eyes to try to shut the motion out but it continued even in the darkness behind her lids.

“Okay,” she said in a meek voice, “maybe a little help.”

The candidate waited a minute still before opening her eyes again. Though her head still throbbed with the smallest of motions, at least things seemed to stay in their rightful place.

Mindful of Sionann’s expertise with the subject, Saviavi gave her a faint shrug. “Not sick especially. Might be if I laid down..” Or maybe laying down would feel better. Her body seemed to enjoy toying with her and a rush of nausea had her trying to sit down again. She wanted to put her head between her knees, but she knew the quicker they got to the healer hall the better it would be.

So she’d accept Cabryn’s offer, with Sionann to support too, and slowly, very slowly, head out of the classroom.

Spoiler for Hidden:

Colvin mimed zipping his lips, locking it, and throwing away the key when O’sir told him to be quiet. Not exactly the most respectful reaction but at least he didn’t keep talking. When Saviavi reached out to him, wiggling fingers still with traces of blood, he grinned and immediately reached to take her hand and give her a comforting squeeze. “Together” He agreed with a low, amused chuckle. She was interesting, this girl who laughed while she bled.

He showed considerable restraint in not rolling his eyes or making a smart ass remark when Cabryn and Sionann cooed and hovered over Savi and asked about her legs. He was pretty sure her legs worked just fine. They might not be wrong about her being sick though, if she did have a concussion it wouldn’t be unusual for her to be nauseous. After the fight with M’kale he’d battled the nausea first with the head injury and then again as the Healer’s stopped giving him fellis and withdrawals happened. Even thinking about that now make his stomach churn in a way that the lash, or linking bloody fingers with Savi, hadn’t done.

Part of why he was unusually quiet too might have been because he was focusing all his attention on getting off the top of the desk in a way that caused as little pain as possible and didn’t pull at the shirt dried to his back and make him start bleeding again. Maybe sitting on top of the desk hadn’t been the brightest of ideas. And then there was nothing else to do but follow the group to the Healer Hall, the last place he wanted to go right now.

His eyes flicked to O’sir, flashing with the briefest hint of fear and uncertainty, before he turned to follow the girls out with his usual nonchalant grin replacing whatever doubt had been there before. In his usual showmanship fashion, he made a scene of taking slow deliberate steps behind the girls, waiting as they took their time guiding Saviavi out. Cole didn’t look at Oarlen as he left. He couldn’t. Not right now. He was sure he’d see the kid later though.
