Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

An Interesting Prospect [21.03.2580 // 2pm] Ophyonis
« on: February 17, 2017, 09:16:19 PM »
Notkerric waited for the last 'keeper giving a report to leave his small office before slumping in his seat and resting his head on the one small sliver of clear desk space in front of him.

There were piles of reports. Piles. Ration reports, distribution results, inventory, event reports, and his most recent addition: a summary of verbal reports from some 'keepers who were involved in an altercation outside a brothel. They weren't actively walking a beat at the time, which meant he was dealing with men who thought their leather armor gave them the status of the sharding Lord Holder.

It didn't. It merited them punishment when they stepped out of line. And fighting over who gets to fuck which whore, while wearing their armor and using their daggers in said fight was a bit too much for him.

"What the hell did I get myself in to?" he asked Kerrisk, looking up to meet the steady gaze of his wher. The hulking bronze was crouched in the back of the office, dominating what little space there was. Notkerric had hung two curtains over the door instead of the usual one to help block the light and kept a barely-uncovered glow on his desk for the paperwork. The rest of his tiny squadron leader office was bathed in shadows.

The wher just met his gaze and huffed. "No help," Notkerric muttered, sticking his finger up at Kerrisk. He responded by snorting in clear amusement. The double-squadron leader resigned himself to organizing the reports, starting with the punishment for the wherry-heads in the fight.

Training squad, he decided, scribbling down "reassignment" and the name of the current leader of that squadron on the bottom of the report. He moved it to the very, very small "out" pile and grabbed the next sheet: inventory results from the latest distribution of rations. Not much better reading, in his opinion.

Xerlyle had promised Ophy that once he had a wher, he’d introduce him to his commander. It had been two turns since the Peacekeeper had first put it in Ophyonis’ head that he might make a good one too—and Ophy had spent those long months keeping an eye out for someone willing to part with a wher egg. Many of them weren’t, or wanted to trade them for things that he didn’t have or wasn’t willing to part with. It bad been a stroke of luck, really, that had ended up with him crossing paths with a man who can, and would, give one to him in exchange for Ophyonis not breaking all of his fingers rather than just those on one hand.

Ophy was not a patient man at the best of times, but everything about this day had been a long time in coming. His Bronze, who had announced himself only once as Ophysk, would take two more turns yet to finish growing. Right now, he wasn’t very impressive looking thing—all pale except for his legs and underbelly, covered in wrinkled skin that seemed a few sizes too large for him.

An ugly beast, by all accounts, but Ophyonis already felt proud of the wher. Xerlyle, and those others who he knew that had bonded to whers, seemed to think Ophysk would grow to be a large and intimidating Bronze judging by how big and bulky he’d been upon hatching. A fact which made his handler all the happier—even if he didn’t end up getting an assignment in the Peacekeepers as he hoped, the monster would prove useful in enforcing too.

He was uncommonly quiet as his friend led him to his commander’s office; as they walked, Ophyonis watched the other Peacekeepers that they passed. After so many turns of running with one of the drudge-born gangs, it still made his skin itch to be around so many damn ‘keepers. And he wondered how many of them were as corrupt as Xerlyle.

When they reached the commander’s office, the tall and wiry Peacekeeper gestured to Ophy. “You and your beast wait here a sec’.” His own large, dark Bronze—a thick wher with heavy scars on one side of his face and neck, had already sat on his haunches behind them. Ophysk followed suit.

Ophyonis waved a hand, indicating he’d not be going anywhere.

Turning to the door, Xerlyle knocked on it heavily before poking his dark-haired head inside. “Sir, you got a minute?”

Spoiler for OOC:
Let me know if this doesn’t work or anything needs changed. Would you prefer that Xerlyle had already mentioned Ophy to Notkerric, or that this is the first he’s hearing of him?

Notkerric stared at the inventory sheet, not really seeing the numbers in front of him. They didn't add up, and hadn't added up for the past five times he scanned the damn thing. If he had this many people come through for rations, and these many blocks, he should have had quite a bit left over. Instead, the number was lower than it should have been. Not by much, but still lower.

Maybe some families had split up, pretending to be single men and women in order to get more food. Or maybe someone was stealing. Notkerric wasn't stupid; he knew there were some of the 'keepers who ran with gangs in their spare time. Frankly, he didn't care what his men did in their free time as long as they worked well for him. So those two numbskulls who used their armor and dagger to try and get better whores from the brothel? That pissed him off. But if they had just gone to the brothel? He didn't care.

Not everyone could be as well-off as him.

Kerrisk huffed a warning a few moments before a knock sounded on the stone outside his office. Xerlyle's head poked through the curtains and Notkerric waved him through.

"Sure, come in." He did his best to sound calm. Of course he wasn't annoyed by the stupidity of some of his men. Of course he wasn't baffled by the numbers not adding up. Of course he wasn't bothered by what Xerlyle did in his off-time. Notkerric was just hoping that the man wouldn't add some other trivial issue to his long to-do list.

Spoiler for OOC:
You're good! I think Xerlyle would've just been like "I have a prospect" and maybe not have said anything more than that? This can be the official introduction.

Leaving Ophy waiting outside, Xerlyle stepped fully into Notkerric’s office when the other Peacekeeper invited him in. Standing at attention, he clasped his hands behind his back—the typical position the lower-ranked ‘keepers were supposed to adopt when reporting to their commanders. Xerlyle might have a bit of a reputation as a sly and teasing son-of-a-bitch in his off hours, but he wasn’t stupid enough to do anything disrespectful and get himself in trouble with those who ultimately held his fate in their hands.

He didn’t apologize for bothering Notkerric, because he knew the man wouldn’t have invited him into his office if he wasn’t up for talking. Instead, simply, he began—“You remember how I told you a while back that there was someone I thought might be the sort you’re looking for? He’s got a wher recently, a Bronze, so I figured now’d be a good time to introduce him. See if you wanna bother putting him through training or not.”

Never one for standing still for long, Xerlyle rocked on his feet a bit, though he kept the respectful, straight-backed pose. “He’s waiting outside if you want.” Absently, he nodded to the papers on the commander’s desk. “But we can come back later if you’re busy.”

Spoiler for OOC:
That works for me. 8D And excuse this basically being a post of just Xerlyle. I didn’t wanna just blow through Notkerric inviting him in, or this conversation, or anything like that. So. Here we are. XD

Notkerric placed the sheets down on his desk when Xerlyle mentioned a new prospect. That was good. He liked new prospects.

"They're just inventories from today's distributions." He looked up at the man and gave him a hard eye. "They don't match like they should." Silent was the warning that if he or his men had anything to do with the missing rations, they should fix it sooner rather than later. "I can look at them again later. Bring in the prospect."

Notkerric told Kerrisk to remain in the back of the office for now. "Is the wher with him?"

That warning—almost a threat—wasn’t lost on Xerlyle, but he didn’t respond to it directly. Just met Notkerric’s gaze levelly. He and the gang he worked for didn’t have anything to do with the mismatched inventories, but even so he could recognize the danger there. Hopefully, whoever had caused the discrepancy would be smart enough to fix it as quick as possible. But given the fact they’d been sloppy enough to get caught in the first place, that didn’t seem likely.

Unfortunate for them. But Xerlyle didn’t care.

“Yeah, I thought he should bring it along. It’s pretty well-behaved, though.” It wouldn’t do to have a wher trying to attack others belonging to the Peacekeepers, which was information he’d passed along to Ophyonis long before the man had even bonded to one. And he’d lucked out with a pretty level Bronze; nothing like its quick-tempered and volatile owner.

Turning back toward the entrance to Kerric’s office, Xerlyle poked his head back into the hall. “He says you can come in now. Just make sure your beast behaves.” It’d reflect badly on them both if it didn’t. And while Xerlyle didn’t think it’d come to that, he didn’t want to take any chances.

As he stepped back, Ophyonis slid into the room, edging around the Peacekeeper and his own wher with Ophysk in tow. Obedient, the young Bronze remained behind him—clearly not meaning to encroach on territory that wasn’t his, but just enough inside the room that he wasn’t blocking the doorway.

Ophy wasn’t the sort to bow—it just wasn’t the sort of gesture he’d ever been trained into—but he did nod respectfully to Notkerric. An acknowledgment of the man’s rank. And while Ophyonis no doubt didn’t look exactly respectable, there would be no mistaking the muscles on his frame or the easy and nearly predatory way he held himself.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Ophyonis.”

No worries. <3

Notkerric's eyes passed over the man and his clearly young wher, taking in just what the man had to offer. Clearly from the rougher parts of Hold life, he still carried himself with well. Muscled, alert, certainly someone who wouldn't be afraid to get physical if necessary. The question was, would he get physical if unnecessary? The wher was still young, probably a turn or less, and not mottled with the scars that marked older bronzes. That would probably change if Ophyonis agreed to join the Peacekeepers.

Notkerric hoped he would.

"Thank you, Xerlyle. You're dismissed." He waved the other man out of the room and returned his attention to the man in front of him. "Nice to meet you, Ophyonis. I'm glad that you reached out to Xerlyle, though is still quite some time before you can begin your training with us. How old is your wher?"

“Sir.” Saluting Notkerric almost jauntily, Xerlyle shot Ophy one last lopsided smile before ducked back out into the hall to collect his wher. They still had things to do for the day before their duties concluded, and they had no reason to linger. Whatever ended up happening, it was entirely in Ophyonis’ hands now. And Notkerric’s. Mostly whether or not the two would get along and what measure they might take of one another.

For his own part, Ophyonis watched the Peacekeeper right back as the man studied him. “Understood. I wasn’t figuring this’d be anything quick.” Xerlyle had warned him about that much, anyway. This was no idle or casual undertaking; if he wanted it bad enough, he’d have to work at it. Fortunately, Ophy was no stranger to that. After all, he’d not gotten to be an enforcer by sitting around on his ass.

“He’s just over a month old. About a tenday past.” The little thing was small, especially compared to the big Bronzes many of the Peacekeepers were bonded to. But according to those who had more experience in these thing than Ophy did, Ophysk showed promise of being just as big once he’d grown. While his muscle wasn’t refined, he’d hatched as a thick and sturdy creature.

"Training will take you two and one half turns," Notkerric said, eyeing the baby bronze wher at their feet. Kerrisk ignored the thing, deeming it too tiny to pay attention to. "You are more than welcome to begin the physical conditioning on your own now. You cannot attend any of our classes, but any exercise you can do in your spare time will help."

He motioned at the singular stool pushed against the wall. "Bring that over here and sit down. The training will consist of training you in what we do, teaching you to train your wher, and then some hands on experience with a squad. Your training increases in difficulty every half-turn with exams along the way to make sure you're learning.

"How much has Xerlyle told you about what we do? It's not all flashy armor that gets you the pretty woman," he warned, smirking at Ophyonis. "We do work here. We pass out rations to the people of the Hold. We control fights. We have a code of conduct that you have to follow. You and your wher cannot be violent. If you screw up and forget your training or do something dumb, you will be punished."

Peacekeeping wasn't for the faint of heart. Notkerric loved it, had poured his whole life into it, but it sucked sometimes. He needed to make sure this young man was prepared for that.

Xerlyle had, at least, been very clear about what all of this meant. For as long as Ophy had been doing his best to keep clear of the Peacekeepers, learning to see them a bit differently had been no simple thing—much less deciding it was worth it to be one. So at Notkerric’s explanation of the length of time involved in training, and that he wouldn’t be able to join them officially for all that until Ophysk was fully grown, he nodded. And then moved to retrieve the stool that the man had indicated so that he could sit in it.

His small Bronze curled up by his feet, a bit more eat ease now that the older one seemed to be mostly ignoring his presence. And since there seemed to be no danger to his handler from either Notkerric or his wher, he was more than content to simply rest and wait.

“Understood. Xerlyle’s told me a fair bit.” Including how a corrupt Keeper could be one without getting caught. But that wasn’t something this man needed to know. “I know this ain’t all some cushy job, and that there’ll be rules I have to stick to.” There certainly parts of it that were a bit plush from this point of view, but that wasn’t all there was to it. And like with anything else, he’d have to put in time and work to get to the benefits of it.

Ophyonis might not necessarily like following rules, but he could do so for an end goal such as this one.

"And you're prepared to do that? It can be a challenge for certain trainees depending on their...personal background." Notkerric paused, waiting to see if Ophyonis would react. The peacekeeper knew of Xerlyle's past and he knew the man would be cautious enough to balance out his world. He also knew that if he screwed up, Notkerric would prosecute him just like everyone else.

So it was with a healthy mix of caution and optimism that he eyed Xerlyle's little friend. If Ophyonis could learn discipline and train his wher right, then he'd be a great boon for the force. It wasn't often that gang members would come to join the Peacekeepers. And while Notkerric wouldn't ask him to inform on any of his past acquaintances, it would be beneficial to have an insider's eye on some situations.

But if Ophyonis couldn't learn to control his wher, there would be, quite simply, nothing Notkerric could do. Still, he had an idle attitude around him -- like complete control was waiting just below the surface. This man could be a Peacekeeper Notkerric could train on his own. It was, after all, a much more stable position than anything a gang could offer. A weapon, armor, steady work, safety, friends, and training to maintain and improve the mind and body. Anything an ambitious man could want.

Notkerric had the feeling he was very ambitious.

"What all do you know about the training we do?" he finally asked, wondering how much Ophyonis had been told about their process. A little explanation on some of the things he would be working on probably wouldn't go amiss.
