Current Month

9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

Southern Winds is a Mature Roleplay. This means we allow for sexual, violent content that would be found in a struggling, 9th Interval Pern. Sex is common place in the Weyr and terrible deaths are no stranger here. As such, our players should be 18+. These themes are to be handled maturely at all times.

Top of the Morning [ 7.5.2590 / 8:30 AM ] || Fisk
« on: March 22, 2017, 07:16:44 PM »
On any given morning, it was a safe bet that Vicymus would be late. Being on time had never been his strong suit; and though there were occasions—near miracles—in which he would actually arrive when he was supposed to, they were the exception rather than the rule. For most apprentices, the prospect of punishment and extra chores would have been more than enough deterrent. But Vicky had ever had difficulty connecting consequences to actions, and so none of the many reprimands he’d received in his time as a Fisher had ever really stuck in a meaningful way.

He was the bane of the Journeymen. But no matter how frustrated some of them might become with him, never did it on purpose. Vicky didn’t intend to cause problems, nor to make anyone unhappy. It was just that when something did catch his scattered attention and held it—for a few minutes or longer—he tended to stray toward that thing rather than whatever responsibilities he was supposed to have at a given time.

This time, that had taken the form of conversation with one of the weyrfolk kitchen staff as they cleaned up after breakfast. They’d recently bonded to a sweet Blue flit, and the tiny creature looked much like the water shadows Vicymus was familiar with under the bright turquoise waters around Fort Island. He’d been gushing about how cute the fire lizard was to begin with, and then gotten wrapped up in conversation.

Only when he’d mentioned in passing that he was a Fisher had the weyrfolk given him a quizzical look. “Shouldn’t you be down at the Cove with them, then?”

It was only half past the eighth mark of the morning, though, which meant he was more on time than not, at least in Vicky’s opinion. And he was rather proud of himself for that as he left the tunnels, striking out across the Weyr Bowl toward the Cove. He could see the figures of dragons and their riders in the distance, as well as the familiar forms of his fellow Crafters on the beach. The day was bright, the sun was shining, and it was sparkling oh so enticingly off the waves beyond the edge of the Bowl.

Vicky remembered, vaguely, that he was supposed to be working with Fisk that morning, so he sought the man out among the other Fishers working in the shallows. “Morning!” he greeted brightly when he found him, flashing a grin. “What are we doing today?”

It’d not occur to him that he’d know that if he’d been on time. Nor that the other Fisher might be annoyed at his being late again.

Unsurprisingly, Vicky was late. Again. Perpetually late, it was actually more of a surprise when he arrived within an hour of the time that he had been requested to, which is why Fisk never planned to actually start anything that he was supposed to be doing with Vicymus on time.

Fisk had started of course, he had been down at the cove half an hour before their work was scheduled to start, and he had used the time in between his arrival and Vicymus' to help out with the morning lessons. This morning, the second turners had been learning about the fish of the shallows, so Fisk had been called over to shed some light while he was there.

In any case, even he had been excused from helping with the lesson, he had begun the task of setting the spiderclaw and baitfish traps. If he could get Vicymus to concentrate for long enough, Fisk was hoping he could get the apprentice to work with him, making some new traps with supplies brought in recently by Jungle wing.

An early summer storm having swept into the cove sooner than expected and tearing some of them off their anchors. Most likely, they would come floating back to the beach some time soon, the cove was sheltered enough that they never usually lost them forever.

But that was all dependent on how long he could get Vicymus to work with him for.

Hopefully, and he crossed his fingers that this might actually work, by starting off setting the traps, before they started to build them, it might keep Vicky occupied for longer. But Fisk never knew with him.

Fisk shook his head in astonishment and heaved a sigh when Vicky finally showed up.

"You know you're half an hour late, right? Again?" He said, pointing to the trap next to him which he knew that Vicymus should be able to set up by now.

No doubt one of the most infuriating things about Vicky—to his fellow Crafters or anyone who needed him to be somewhere on time—was that he never exactly apologized for it. And maybe even more so that he didn’t try to offer an excuse either. Sure, he’d give a reason if pressed for one, but his completely nonchalant disregard for rules or expectations meant that Vicymus never saw a reason to make excuses for something he’d done. What was the point?

So when he smiled at Fisk, he didn’t exactly look repentant. “Sorry.” Tucking one of the longer parts of his hair behind one ear, Vicky all but plopped himself onto the sand next to the other Fisher so that he could tend to the trap Fisk had pointed at. It was clear that it needed set up and baited again before it could be anchored back out in the Cove.

“Nice day out today, though, yeah?” He grinned some; surely even Fisk couldn’t be in too sour a mood with the sun shining like it was. “Nice of summer to finally get here.”

"Oh yes I'm sure." Fisk grumbled. "You look very sorry." The fisher almost rolled his eyes at Vicky's words, knowing full well that he wasn't the least bit worried about being late.

He wasn't sure whether he could be bothered to ask for a reason, not sure whether it would make much of a difference. Late was late, and Vicymus was like to always be as such.

Setting his trap, and setting is aside to be anchored out after they had completed the rest of their work, Fisk started on the next one, cursing as he realised there was a gaping whole within it, looking to his supplies to see whether there was anything on hand with which to provide a quick enough fix. Otherwise, it would simply go onto the pile and he would attend to it whilst starting their new ones.

"Sharding packtails always rip these up when they realise they're caught."

Casting his eyes to the sky, he examined the weather. "I suppose it is a nice day." Fisk responded dryly to Vicymus. "Although, it would be nicer if it were earlier, the sun will become unbearable soon enough."

Per the norm, it didn’t even really occur to Vicky that Fisk might not have appreciated his response. So he just grinned some as he tended to the first of the traps the other Fisher had pointed out to him. Fortunately, as he looked it over, it seemed that it hadn’t sustained any damage—not like the one that Fisk himself was presently cursing at. So it was a simple task to reset it.

Pushing it off to the side once he was done, Vicymus snagged the next one to repeat the process. Absently watching Fisk as he did so, he noticed his glance toward the sky. “I don’t think it’ll be so bad,” he mused, though it was true enough that he was rather more prone to soaking up the sunshine without burning compared to those more native to the north. “It’ll at least be cooler down here by the water.”

And though he knew in a vague way that he probably shouldn’t, he couldn’t help but rib Fisk a little. “And we could always go for a swim to cool off.” Highly unlikely though it might be that the other Fisher would let him get away with such a thing when he was supposed to be working.

Fisk raised an eyebrow, one side of his mouth twitching as he attempted to avoid smiling. "To be sure. You can go for a swim." He paused for dramatic effect. "When you're off my service for the day."

That statement could likely go one of two ways. I would either encourage the apprentice to put in some solid work, in the hope efficiency would get them off to lunch earlier. Or it would inspire him to rush through everything, in the hope that would get them off to lunch sooner. The latter would never work with Fisk, he could always find work to be done, but the former might have an effect. Of course, that would be taking into account the half an hour late they started tacked onto the end of Fisk's plan for the day.

Managing to recover what was left of the trap by weaving in some of the spare material they kept lying around, Fisk set it, before moving on to another. Vicymus was making quick work of his own traps, for all that Fisk was complaining. They'd be out on the water soon enough to anchor them out in the cove at the rate they were going.

Not one to be dissuaded at all, Vicky just laughed at Fisk’s dramatic pronouncement. “You might change your mind when it gets hotter,” he teased, finishing with another of the traps. For all that he was easily distracted and somewhat scatterbrained, Vicymus wasn’t a bad Fisher, just an irresponsible one. When someone could actually get him to focus, though, he didn’t do half badly at the chores or tasks assigned to him… so long as he could be kept on track.

And I might get a swim setting the traps anyway.” It wasn’t strictly necessary, since most of the time they were just weighted down and then dropped over the side of one of the small rowboats. But if one of them caught on something, or the tides took it and it wasn’t placed optimally, sometimes one of the apprentices was sent to retrieve it or move it. While Vicky wasn’t the sort to mess up setting them in the first place just for that, it did happen sometimes.

And he couldn’t imagine they would be at this same chore all day.
