Guest Info Plot & Events

Current Month
8.2590 A.R.
9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every 4 or 5 OOC days. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Feel free to say hello, guesties! Registered members can request a colored name here.

Remember,
this holds no IC consequence and is only for fun.

Hello and Welcome!

While we feature 2 new mutations, we stick pretty close to canon. We've Ranks, roles, and positions for just about anyone who wants to get involved, with a relaxed community. Play and post at your own pace. Swing by and say hello!

Southern Winds uses a subaccount system to distinguish between Players and their Characters. So REGISTER with your Player Account Name and the admin will assign you your Character Subaccount once your character is approved!

Southern Winds is a Mature Roleplay. This means we allow for sexual, violent content that would be found in a struggling, 9th Interval Pern. Sex is common place in the Weyr and terrible deaths are no stranger here. As such, our players should be 18+. These themes are to be handled maturely at all times.

All Work and No Play [18.05.2590 // 5:30PM] A'lori
« on: April 13, 2017, 05:23:15 PM »
The introduction to riding straps months ago had been the first time that it had really, truly set in for A'srian that this was going to be his life now; half of it belonging to and more than half of it utterly devoted to a dragon. It was still just a thing that was going to happen, though, and a part of him had been waiting to wake up from this fantastic, beautiful dream to find that he'd never Impressed at all. Cosilanth simply thought he was silly and left it at that, the idea that he didn't exist coming across as quite absurd to the growing bronze.

The fact that he and his classmates were now required to make their own riding straps was a bit of a daunting idea for A'srian; he hadn't had the slightest clue how to do anything related to stitching, sewing or leatherwork before they'd begun practising on discarded rigs, and he didn't think his skills had progressed that far. He told himself that he'd always been his own worst critic, and it helped.

A little.

The small bit of confidence gained was the reason A'srian was currently seated on the floor in the corner of the Weyrling Commons area, the various bits, pieces and tools for his riding leathers scattered about him in a small crescent. He was actually feeling pretty good about his work so far, vaguely surprised by how his straps looked after a couple hours of doing other things and decidedly trying very hard not to think about them. 'You know, this might not actually be that bad, after all. Maybe I remember more than I thought I did, or something.'

Cosilanth snorted from his ledge, both aloud and transmitted to A'srian. I think you don't give yourself enough credit, he said, though A'srian just waved him off with a mental huff.

Normally Cosilanth would have called him boring for staying inside at this time of day, when the weather was so nice and they didn't have any other real responsibilities to attend to, but A'srian had a sneaking suspicion that his bonded was just as eager as he was for the advent of real flying, as a pair. Despite that, Cosilanth hadn't sacrificed his own time, having promptly sprawled himself out on his favorite ledge in the Weyrbowl after they'd been released from the afternoon's training. He fully intended to take advantage of the downtime in his own way.

As of 29.06.2590, Cosilanth is 10 months old. Length: 22.7M, Height: 4.6M, Wingspan: 36M

Unlike how most of his classmates surely felt, A'lori had actually been looking forward to the portion of their training when they would be making the riding straps and gear. Naturally slender and not overly given to muscle, he had ever felt like he was lagging behind the rest of his class in becoming a proper dragon rider; of course, he could still do all the things required of them by the Weyrlingmaster and the drills -- but A'lori always seemed to struggle more with those things than his stronger or more strapping fellows did. It had been a constant point of frustration for him since Impressing Queriluth.

But the leatherworking and sewing involved for straps? That he could do. He'd never made straps specficially before, but he came from a family full of Weavers and had been one himself prior to being Searched. Working with the leather and the thread felt like coming home.

So it was cheerfully that he'd set to the task, carefully measuring and remeasuring each piece before he committed them to their final form. And now was the time for stitching them all together, or at least beginning it. So with Queriluth enjoying the fading sunlight out in the grass, A'lori had gathered his materials and resolved to get as much work done as possible. Well. Work. He knew he should rightly consider it such, but it didn't feel that way.

Turns ago, he'd never been able to imagine himself as anything other than a Weaver. Now, when this was such a rare chance to ply the trade he'd no longer be able to call his own, A'lori guiltily felt like it was almost a reward for how difficult training had been so far.

Another one of his classmates seeemed to have the same idea, he found as he emerged into the weyrling common area. "Hello," he said by way of greeting, offering a smile to A'srian. The other boy rode a Bronze, though A'lori was embarrassed to realize he couldn't remember the dragon's name.

"Do you mind if I sit with you? I was planning on working on my own straps too. I promise not to get ours mixed up." Faintly playful, and A'lori would not admit to himself that it would have been flirting if their situation had been different.

'I don't think this is right,' A'srian frowned down at the leathers in his hands, trying to figure out where he went wrong and why they didn't look right to him. Cosilanth only half-heartedly commiserated with him, distracted by his own people-watching from his perch above the Weyrbowl. It had quickly become one of his favorite past-times in the little free time the Weyrlings had, mostly because there seemed to be so much drama within the Weyr.

Sighing, A'srian sat up, taking the momentary, half-assed break to roll his shoulders a bit. He glanced up from the tangle of leather and frustration on the ground as a person-shaped shadow fell across the space in front of him. Recognizing A'lori, he smiled almost automatically at the other Weyrling. "Hi--uh, yeah, no, that's totally fine. Thanks." He paused, glancing back down at his pile of leathers before looking back up at A'lori. "There's not that much to mix up, to be honest. I'm rubbish at this."

No you're not. You can't be rubbish at anything. His bronze's response was nearly instant, as usual when A'srian said anything negative about himself. It was less surprising now than it had once been, but still warmed his heart just a little every time it happened.

Spoiler for ooc:
Is short, I suck, I'm sorry. But here, have a thing. :bird:

A’lori returned A’srian’s smile when he answered in the affirmative, happily taking a seat across from the other weyrling and tucking his legs beneath himself. As he began to settle his various materials into a neatly organized system, he studied what the other had before him. Many of the others didn’t have the benefit he did of coming from Weaver stock, and A’lori had seen more than a few of them struggle with the various necessary skills. Even the lessons they’d had on sewing and leatherworking as Candidates hadn’t completely prepared them for the intricacy of this task.

“You’re just new at it,” he offered graciously, smiling once more. He was firmly of the opinion that this wasn’t so difficult with practice—and he’d stand by that. “I can try to give you some tips, if you like. I used to be a Weaver.”

Initially, A’lori had been reluctant to give too much guidance to his fellow weyrlings on this project. After all, this was his first time making this particular item too; and the rest would need to know how to make them just as much as he would. This was part of their future as riders. But he supposed it couldn’t hurt to help just a little, so long as he didn’t end up doing the whole thing and preventing A’srian from actually learning.

A'srian clung to the pause in his efforts regarding the tangle of leather in front of him with both metaphorical hands. It wasn't that he didn't want to do this--he actually wasn't sure he'd ever wanted anything more, except maybe Impressing in the first place--but the weight that was slowly settling itself on his shoulders was getting to be a lot to bear. Responsibility. Not only for himself, now (and his life, well-being, whatever--was important to him), but for Cosilanth's well-being as well, and in a way that hadn't quite been relevant until now.

A'lori's words pulled him out of his self-depricating ruminations, and he glanced up at the other weyrling with a vaguely thankful look. His encouragement was quite a relief, especially coming from someone in a similar situation to his own; if he'd ended up talking to a rider about his lack of confidence in his strap-making skills--or, Faranth forbid, a Weyrlingmaster--he thought his confidence might have been even worse.

"Thanks, um--that would be great, actually." He sat up a little straighter, turning his attention back to the straps in front of him--he didn't want A'lori to do it for him either, but A'srian was too stubborn (prideful) to ask for help in this from someone he deemed to be 'above him', whether that was in station or simple attitude. It was almost too early for him to decide where he really needed a hand, but starting at the basics and working his way up from there certainly wouldn't hurt.

It was a bit more gratifying that A’srian didn’t turn him down, either. There were those A’lori had known in the past who would deny someone’s ability to help them out of pride or embarrassment or some combination of the two; and while he tried his best not to generalize about those who rode certain colors—since often there were exceptions to every rule—A’lori knew full well there were probably some Bronzers who would have rejected the offer out of hand.

That would be silly, Queriluth decided breezily, half dozing out at her place in the Bowl. Why would anyone not listen to you?

He had to hide a smile at that, briefly looking down at his own materials and tools again so that the other weyrling wouldn’t think he was teasing him. //Sweet of you to say, but I don’t always know what I’m talking about.//

The sound she made in his head would have been an unladylike snort from anyone else. Nonsense.

“So.” A’lori addressed his classmate again, gesturing to the parts of the straps that A’srian held. “Is there a particular part you’re having problems with?” If he could give directed assistance, all the better. If not, there was no reason they couldn’t go through the steps together.
