Guest Info Plot & Events

Current Month
8.2590 A.R.
9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every 4 or 5 OOC days. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

It was raining this morning, not a light, pitter patter of rain, that was soothing on the face, but a storming, dumping rain, one which cause Elrost to hurry to get as many of the beasts inside and undercover, he had been up since the storm started, herding in as many as he could into the stables, mostly the heavily pregnant mothers, who would potentially get scared by the storm, and the stress could hurt the pregnancy.

The barn was crowded, not really geared up for this many animals in one place, and not really geared up for the herdbeasts at all, or at least, only one or two at a time, he had 5 cows which he had observed where wide eyed at the loud storm, and had managed to lure into the cover. Many of the beasts had moved closer to the barn themselves, finding a little cover underneath roof awnings made for this very reason, and so he patted a few of them on the back as he passed, murmuring a few words of comfort to them before heading inside where he hoped the his workers for today had arrived.

So when the candidates he was supposed to be supervising today arrived, he stepped into the barn, hunched from the rain, and soaking wet. Luckily, it was a warm day still, this weather would probably pass before midday arrived, but Elrost wasn't going to be taking any chances with his cows.

"Alright everyone. We've got to be a little extra careful today, don't walk directly behind the ladies, they're a little skittish."

Spoiler for Hidden:

@Kyya (Oarlen)
@CatTiff (Isalia)

Happy with this for a chore thread? Socialise as you like, Elrost will just help them out and give them some instructions as they go along [/ :love:spoiler]

Rain pelted the ground as Droissa stepped out of the shelter of the mountainside. The ground was already a slurry of mud and debris and the sky above told no tales of mercy. Grumbling at her luck, Droissa hugged the cliffside wall as she ran, as gracefully as she could manage, to the stables. Her boots slapped the drenched earth with every heavy stride and streaks of dirt quickly collected up either pantleg, and then splattered against her arms, too. It was going to be a miserable morning.

The barn was reached. Inside it was damp and crowded and smelled something terrible. Too many wet bodies in too small of a space, and none of these bodies cared to hold their bladder or bowels. She took a few short breaths to acclimate herself to the stench and then took a brief inventory of herself. Droissa knew she looked a mess but she figured things like appearances weren’t so important when your job was mucking stalls and otherwise helping out with hairy, mud encrusted beasts.

At least she didn’t have to struggle in this alone.

There was a man among the herdbeasts and a couple of her fellow candidates had come, too. She gathered with her classmates to listen to the crafter’s instruction and did her best not to shiver like a drowned wherry.

Elrost’s words seemed brief and she waited to see if he said more. Droissa had changed out straw before but never with the animals inside, in such close proximity. She did not look forward to having to dodge the hooves of nervous cows. Meekly, she asked, “Do they need anything in particular done to them? Feet checked or tangles combed?” She hoped not. Oiling dragons was one thing, they were smooth and often cleaner than most people and had a distinctly pleasant scent.

As an afterthought, she added, “Sorry, sir. I’m Droissa.”

Isalia was running through the rain to get to the stables. She did not want to be late and Lilgold was thankfully asleep in the rooms so she would not get we. Though the lightweight material that the girl was wearing did make it easy to make it though the rain. She would dry fast and at least being around animals she would not be scared of people. She could handle animals and help to calm them in this storm.

She made it to the barn and squeezed her way in moving her dark wet hair out of her eyes. She was not the only candidate that was going to work here but at least it was not going to be like the classroom where she had to hide in the back of the room to not be seen. Three people she could handle but more than that and she would probably be bolting or wishing Lilgold was there with her like in the class room. She listened and then asked a question softly "Should the ones that are with baby be in a different area than the ones without to make it easer to keep them calm in the storm?" Yah she may be shy but she loved animals, singing, and healing so would put all that to use and ask questions.

She bites her lip as she realizes she forgot something "My name is Isalia." she says softly

Being assigned to assist the beastcrafters had to be one of Oarlen’s favourite duties. It was guaranteed to involve tasks that would carry him through to lunchtime without the tedious downtime that other duties seemed to incur. His delight, then, when he realised that O’sir had assigned him and a couple of the other candidates to work under Elrost, the journeyman who, if he had his crafters right, had himself a rather exuberant green wher for a partner.

Before heading to breakfast and the subsequent hall, Oarlen rummaged through his clothes to retrieve the old, but nonetheless useful waterproof jacket that had quite literally cost an arm and a leg to own; in that Joarna had received it as a gift from a man who had received severe threadscoring down his left side during the pass, losing most of his arm and the bottom quarter of a leg, but surviving thanks to her quick application of her craft. It wouldn’t protect him entirely from the downpour that pelted the ground, but it would keep him somewhat drier than the others… plus he could always have a nice, hot bath in the bathing caves when he was done. Any excuse, really.

From breakfast he beelined towards the herdbeast pens, wiping away the strands of hair that plastered instantly to his face and got into his eyes, but otherwise managing to focus only on passing the fields of bamboo and entering the shelter of the barn. Despite the bonechilling cold caused by the rain, Oarlen had two points of warmth that he took comfort in in the slippery trek. Around his left arm, as was his usual M.O, Freckles was wrapped, though he had snaked his head under the top of the coat Oarlen wore to protect his face, at least, from the rain. And a little less stubborn than his clutch brother, Sweets had managed to crawl up under his bonded’s shirt, clinging to the fabric and remaining rather dry under the layers of clothes.

He shook himself as he entered the shelter of the barn, smiling slightly at the familiar smell of herdbeast, despite the unpleasentness of it. He’d long ago mastered the art of breathing only through his mouth when he didn’t want bad smells to hinder his work, and his lips parted slightly as he switched his breathing to suit.

He nodded firmly as Elrost explained that some of the beasts were skittish, unable to help himself as he bent down to check which ones were ladies and trying to keep their positions in mind… Though how long that would remain a constant thing would depend on just what Elrost had in store for them.

Droissa and Isalia introduced themselves, and without missing a beat, he followed suit. “Yessir. I’m Oarlen, and this is Freckles, Sweets is under here and Canopy-“ He paused as he pointed to the green flit that had appeared overhead, announcing her presence quickly before swooping up into the rafters to hide while Oarlen worked. “- is there.”

He glanced at the candidates beside him and back at Elrost, “Isalia can’t seem to speak louder than a whisper, but she asked whether the pregnant ones need to be moved away from the not pregnant ones to keep ‘em calm.” Then, to the candidates. “’allo Droissa, Isalia. You gotta talk just a little louder if’n you wanna be heard, you know?” He whispered not-so-quietly himself before all attention was back on Elrost.

“Ah, sir. If I may, where’s your Wher today?” He didn’t need a response. But Oarlen was quite fond of the stocky beasts, and working beside one would just make his day perfect despite the downpour and the gruelling task that was sure to be ahead of them.

Elrost looked all of them over, they seemed to be wanting to know how to help at least, even if he wasn't sure that they were very eager to do it. "Yes, Droissa." He replied, nodding. "The wind and the rain can matt up their coats, and I'm sure they'd like a good brush. But I also need someone to go take some hay to the outer trough, a lot of the beasts have moved in closer to shelter from the storm, so I'm sure they've almost cleaned that out." He didn't care who did it, simply someone needed to, they could work it out between themselves.

When the other girl spoke, he tried to tune an ear to what she was saying, and over the crash and bang of the wind and the rain, he could only just make it out, but he did understand nonetheless, before he could respond however, Oarlen spoke up and clarified. "Ah yes. Well I have already done that, there's not much I could do with the space here but," he pointed out a group of five with an open hand, in the corner of the barn huddled together, "Those heifers there are the ones we need to worry about. The rest," waving generically at the rest that were wandering around, "Were just a little nervous, but if they start nosing at the door to get out, then we can just go let them go."

He couldn't help but smile at Oarlen's next question, asking Harrier in his head with an image of the wher where she was, and getting a reply of a dark night, with a pile of mud in the generic shape of a wher, wait no, that was a wher, that was Ellsk. "She's outside playing in the mud, apparently." He sent Harrier a mental thought of her and Ellsk going and doing a final round of the herdbeasts in the pen. "But they'll be both in soon, they're just checking on the beasts that are still out there."

"Alright then! There's a brush over there for someone to go brush, you might need to go get a bucket of water to help rinse them off, you can find that there," he pointed each of these things out in turn, "there's the hay for the trough outside, and someone can grab that rake there to muck out the pens." A pause. "Any questions? I'll be checking on the heifers if anyone needs me."

He limped over to one of the nearest cows, checking the whites of her eyes and murmuring in soothing tones.

Droissa was thankful for many things in life. She appreciated the chances she’d been given, the support she received, and the knowledge that was gifted to her, too. Seldom was she thankful to people individually, however this morning she found herself thinking otherwise. Oarlen’s immediate enthusiasm, and louder voice, gave her the ability to back out of the spotlight and let the conversation continue without her. Isalia was quiet like Dro, too, and she knew that meant neither of them would feel bad about it. Things already seemed to be improving.

Elrost elaborated and confirmed Droissa’s worry. She trusted his expertise but knew that animals tended to be unpredictable no matter what and so she made a beeline for the shovel to commence the mucking. It sounded like the better of the three chores, honestly. She could stay inside and not have to worry about being mauled by an angry cow, win win.

She was an efficient worker, even when the work was less than appealing. Still, the added moisture made the shavings and hay heavier than usual and her rake kept getting bogged down in a thick mixture of straw, mud and shit. Perhaps this hadn’t been the best choice. Feeling a bit stupid, she looked to see what everyone else had gotten busy with.

Droissa decided, too, that a little conversation might make this unpleasantness easier to get through. To Elrost, she asked, “Have you named all of your charges?”

Isalia jumped when Oarlan walked in and spoke up behind her. As she jumped and almost screamed because he had startled her Lilgold blinked in and landed on her shoulder to clam her down and then chittered to Oarlan for startling the girl. The Flit did it in a way to not disturb the animals in the barn because she could sense from Isalia that that would be bad.

Reaching a hand up Isalia stroked the gold and then listened to the craftmaster that was telling them what to do she nodded and was going to confer with the other two as to which chore they wanted to do when Droissa just automatically went to mucking out the stalls. She looked at Oarlan and smiled to him. "If it is okay with you I do not mind the brushing of the animals and you can fill the hay that way you can watch for the Wher to get here since that is outside. I love to bush animals anyway even the ones with tangles I know it makes them feel better."

She would wait for Oarlan to speak before going and doing the chore she would be doing. She grabbed a bucket and filled it with water for the dirty animals then grabbed the brush walking over to the first beast and started to brush it down talking to it the whole time as she did. She figured talking to the animals helped to keep them calm.

Distracted in looking back towards the way he had come in in case the wher suddenly reappeared at mention of her, Oarlen only realised they’d been given their tasks when Isalia suggested he head outside. He glanced towards Droissa to see her grabbing a rake to start mucking out stalls, surprised that she would go immediately to what was often regarded as the least favourite chore with the herdbeast. It was a pleasant surprise, however, and he nodded enthusiastically at the possibility that he’d bump into Ellsk.

Besides… As he looked his fellow candidates over he noted they had not been quite as prepared for rainfall as he was, though waterproof jackets were not the most available of clothing items when there were more important things to be made. Rain wasn’t going to kill ya. “Mmhmm.” He responded just in case Isalia mistook his bobbing head as anything but agreement. “I’ll make sure it only gets a little wet. Then I’ll come back and help you, Droissa? If you need me sooner, just tell Canopy, yeah? She’ll make sure Freckles calls me back.” He had moved over to the bale of hay as he spoke, lifting it up with only a little effort, his normally bouncy step subdued as he began to move towards the paddock.

Canopy gave a dignified trill from above, eyes whirling agitatedly at the downpour that was happening outside, but happy enough not to insist on sticking by the boy. Freckles, like a portable fire, was keeping Oarlen’s arm warm, shifting only so far as to make it easier for him to carry the bale of hay as he stepped into the pouring rain once more – a little too excitable when one considered they were trying to keep the beasts calm.

He squinted to keep the rain from his eyes, managing to see fairly well despite the water as he trudged across the field, murmuring reassurances to the herdbeast he passed in a surprisingly calmer tone than what he usually spoke with and getting disappointed every time he passed a wher-shaped pile of mud that didn’t turn out to be a wher.

True to his word, he reached the food trough as quickly as his little legs could have carried him, pleased to find that the rain hadn’t pierced the entire thing when he broke it apart to distribute evenly across it, laughing as one of the more adventurous herdbeast nosed him aside to get at the somewhat dry hay.

Not minding the motley of smells, from wet herbeast hide to dirt and shit mixed together by numerous hooves, Oarlen managed to finish spreading the hay throughout the trough so each section had a relatively even quantity to it, shoving back at the beast who had nosed him earlier when he tried to claim more than his own fair share.

Lighter without the bale of hay to weigh him down, and sweets and Freckles offering warmth where the rain would try to sap it away, Oarlen stepped away from the sheltered feeding area and back into the water, showing not a glimmer of concern as it pelted down on him. He may only have fourteen turns, but he’d be stupid not to appreciate what a gift it was to be able to step outside. And Rain had always been safer. Not safe but er.

Giddy in a way that only ever seemed to happen during storms, Oarlen darted through the mud, heedless of the fact that he was most definitely going to require a bath when this was all over because mud was everywhere and instead wondering if he was going to beat Elrost’s wher to the barn or not.

It seemed like his instructions had been detailed enough, as he kept an eye out on the candidates as they all seemed to get alone with their work. Little Oarlen seemed like he was at least enthusiastic enough to be able to survive the downpour, Droissa had picked the physically hardest job, but she didn't have to deal with the beasts, and Isalia seemed to be talking to the cows in just the way they liked.

If they don't impress, they could all have a job here. He thought to himself, and Harrier couldn't help but cackle down from the rafters, where she decided to roost just after she had flown in, dripping small droplets of water down from her large wings, but the vantage point giving her a good view of the entire barn. What better for her to keep an eye on them?

He was absorbed in his work for a while, cataloguing everything strange, new and old about his heifers, checking their reaction times and the like. Some were nervous yes, but mostly they were just cold, it wasn't much of a worry.

It was this absorption that almost made him miss Droissa's question, but he was glad he didn't. "No, I don't. Sometimes I can't help it, Salla is over there with Isalia, Mallie is that lady in the corner, and this here," he patted the heifer nearest to him, "is Effy." Pointing out another, "Jarla is there, and the last one is Macee." Waving a hand he continued, "I only name the cows. It's.. too hard to name the rest of the stock."

And it was true, when he was a boy, Elrost had gone around giving all the beasts names, until he had to slaughter Jenry, and he decided that was the end of that. Most of his ladies were around for a while, good breeding and milking stock, until they got too old of course, but a lot longer life than the bulls.

Ellsk spied Oarlen's little body darting through the mud, and obviously, she took that to mean, it was time to play a game. She didn't creep up slowly behind him, Ellsk straight up bowled him over, tackling him into a pile of mud, sure, he'd get a few bruises, but she wasn't a big wher, more like a canine than dragonkin in that sense, hopefully he'd see it less as an attack and more as the game she imagined, especially when she came bouncing up, trumpeting happily at him, just outside the entrance to the barn.

Harrier just blinked disapprovingly at the entrance.

A glimmer of movement and color overhead brought Droissa’s attention upward where a firelizard had perched herself. As always, the sight of the flit brought an envious smile to her lips. The island and weyr were full of the things, everywhere you turned, but Dro herself still hadn’t managed to get one. She paused in her work to watch the queen for a minute but was roused from her daydreams when Elrost responded.

She listened with a practiced politeness. If the girl was anything, it was just that, and it meant she’d been told her fair share of long winded stories. This wasn’t the case today, much to her appreciation, and the topic was one she found, if anything, endearing. Droissa understood this passion for animals, even if she didn’t fully share it for herdbeasts. Then again, she was sure anyone hoping to Impress a dragon wouldn’t waste time pondering the daily activities of a dragon’s main prey source. So she nodded here and there, acknowledging the names but knowing also she’d just as easily forget them.

But hey, it was the thought that counts, right?

Droissa settled back into her work routine. It was hard work, that remained unchanged, but the promise of Oarlen returning soon to help her made the load seem lighter. She didn’t want to slack off further and have him stuck with more than his fair share, too. Shovel, lift, toss, shovel, lift, toss. That this had to be done every day, sometimes multiple times a day, made her appreciate dragons all the more.

Isalia worked at brushing the animals that she is standing near making sure to get out the tangles. She looks at the others then at Ellrost "So the cows have names that is nice. When we lived on the main land I had a young flit but he was lost to the thread along with my siblings and foster mother. When that all happened my dad took me in and never let me out of his site. It was also when I got hurt." She was coming out of her shell since it was just the four of them and she was comfortable around them all. She would be happy to tell them about herself she had not told anyone about herself or her past.

She missed her brothers and did not know much about her mom but did know she looked like her. Her dad told her that all the time. This was going to be good helping out the animals. When she was done with the one cow she moved on to the next one and smiled as it mooed at her she softly spook to it before looking at the others she would get the animals all done.

Oarlen’s sprint ended with a startled yelp as he found himsef set upon by a (somewhat) tiny ball of pure muscle, succumbing quickly to her weight and ending up face down in a pile of conveniently-placed mud.

His body shook with silent laughter as he rolled over, an occasional noise slipping through as he tried to catch his breath before sitting up and trying to look angry as he glared at the culprit between fits of giggles.

“Oh you green wherrybrain _ I’m never gonna get this mud outta my clothes! I got lessons today and everything!” He attempted to sound scolding as Ellsk bounced on back and trumpeted at him, but her enthusiasm had him laughing again, removing any chance of her thinking she may have wronged him.

The rain may make it somewhat easier to get rid of the mud, but he’d have to have a bath before lunch, and rustle up something to change into before lessons just in case, though truth be told he wasn’t unhappy for it. “We’re both gonna have to go to the bathing cavern after this. Do you reckon Elrost’ll let ya?” He whispered conspiratorially as he stood up, brushing himself off despite the futility of it.

He did pause a moment to stretch, noting the sore points that may or may not have been caused by the wher’s enthusiasm, though did not see the need to ruin the girls fun by complaining that he might have her him. Instead, he bent down to give the wher a quick rub before straightening and turning towards the barn. He tapped at his leg like he would a canine – had he been old enough to know the beasts, and moved forward. “You can help me and Droissa clear out all the poop.” He stated with a firm nod, glancing around in the slightly dimmer light to try and identify the other candidates before turning back to Ellsk.

“When we’re done Maybe Elrost’ll let us play some more if there’s time, you reckon?”

He didn’t dilly dally too long, as giddy as he may have been, Oarlen was no slacker, and he retrieved another rake to assist Droissa, glancing to see if Ellsk was maybe still interested in him or had better things to do.

“Droissa, if you’d prefer, you can help Isalia brush the cows down. I can handle the muck.” He told the other girl when she got closer, not wanting her to feel obliged to do the messier job now that he was done dealing with the hay.

"How did you get hurt?" Elrost enquired softly to the girl. He didn't want to pry for any information that she didn't want to share. However, since she too, had brought the subject up, it did seem like fair game to at least enquire.

Ellsk on the other hand, was not at all put off by Oarlen's semi-angry words. She merely looked up at him panting, rumbling happily with excitement, and bouncing on her front legs. Neither was she disappointed when it seemed he did not want to continue to play, instead being happy enough to receive her rub and follow dutifully along behind him. Elrost had taught her the commands, not that he used them very much, he preferred to just talk to her. But he had deemed it useful to teach her simple visual commands that others could use if they needed. Evidently, it was successful.

Padding along beside Oarlen happily, she responded enthusiastically to everything he said, regardless of the content of his words. He was talking to her, that was fun enough.

Heaving a sigh when he saw the two walk in together, he glared at Ellsk. "Did she do that?" Regardless of what Oarlen said, Elrost was sure that she did, Ellsk was far too happy being pulled away from her playing in the mud, which means that on her way back, she had obviously made the most of her time.

Isalia seemed eager to share her life story and Droissa was not going to put a damper on that. The other girl was chatty, to be certain, but it wasn’t annoying so far. The back and forth put her mind further off of the smell of the cows, the smell of their shit, picking up the shit, and all of the fun, fun things that went along with a stormy day. At least her clothes were drying.

A muddy Oarlen appeared back in the barn, tailed by a Green Wher that Dro smiled at. They were both filthy but judging by the jovial attitude of the boy, it had been intentional. True to his word, he joined her in the stalls. Dro shook her head at the offer, however. “Hooves aren’t my favorite and I’m already ankle deep in this mess as it is, might as well see it through.” She nodded toward Isalia, “If you’d like to help her finish up, though, you can.” After all, the talkative tended to stay less on task.

Whether he stayed or strayed, she’d continue to shovel. Already a sizeable dent had been made in the chore. She didn’t stop to allow her muscles to seize up but knew when all was said and done, she’d certainly feel it.

Still, it wasn’t the worst way to spend a morning.

Isalia looks at Elrost and then to the cows. "I was outside on the ground and ran to the Weyr my flit with me at the time as was my foster mother and siblings. We where in the front of the line when she was hit and then my siblings and foster mother as well. I was grabbed by a dragon and had a broken arm from that as well as some thread scoring. Since then my Dad did not let me out of his sight unless he was fighting thread." She had the scar still on her left leg from the thread though it was a bit faded. Finishing up on the cow she was working on the went to the next one and started to work on it.

Oarlen glanced at Ellsk and back at the journeyman with a sheepish grin, cheeks reddening as he gave a soft acknowledgement of "Well... yes." Before adding "But it's OK! I'll go straight to the bathing caverns to clean up, and I'll take Ellsk so she can be clean too!" There. Situation resolved. He took the firelizards there enough that surely a wher would be allowed.

He did shake his head at Droissa's suggestion that he help Isalia instead, giving his arms a firm shake to dislodge the firelizards there. "Go on boys. I need me arms for a bit." He said as he did so, pausing a moment to let the two unwrap themselves before joining Canopy in the rafters, Freckles lagging behind in case Oarlen changed his mind.

"Nah. Many hands and what what." He said quickly as he grabbed a rake and properly joined Dro. "Besides, a bit o' work's gonna keep me warmer, considering." He laughed, pausing only a moment longer to give Ellsk another scratch before properly applying himself to the chore.

"Elrost said there was a bucket over there, Ellsk. Didya wanna bring it over to Isalia?" He asked the wher, pointing out the bucket that had been shown to them earlier and then continuing with rhe rake. It would need water in it still, but he liked talking to the wher, and any assistance she  could provide would help them finish their chores sooner.

To Dro, he directed his chatter now, few pauses giving her little time to respond should she have been inclined to. "The sooner this is done, the sooner we can get cleaned up, and I don't mind helping Isalia groom the 'beasts when this is done. You can keep Ellsk company of it comes to that. She'd like it, I'm sure. You just gotta give her a pat every now and then." A pause, as he did just that, before continuing. "So long as Elrost is here, the herdbeasts'll be calm 'cause they know him, right, Sir?"

He spoke out of trust for the man's capabilities, and a faith in the wher that was bonded to him, though truth be told it was just idle chatter, with assumptions being made based on the buts and pieces Oarlen knew about the man- which was to say not much beyond his rank and bonded creatures. The rest was just him filling in the gaps.

In any case, as practiced as he was at talking, he kept up a reasonable pace, waning only when he stopped to give the Wher attention. "Runners'd be harder to work with, I think." He mused in response to Dro's earlier concerns.

Elrost appreciated Droissa's dedication, despite her obvious distaste for the chore, although he couldn't blame her. It wasn't what he would prefer out of all the tasks, but it needed to be done. And therefore, it would be.

Entirely uncertain of how to respond to Isalia's words he simply stayed silent. Luckily, Oarlen was a right ol' chatterbox, and filled the silence quickly, enough so that Elrost was able to return to his work and listen, given Ellsk a quick scowl which she responded to with a happy, and loving yip. Given that it seemed Oarlen didn't mind her rough housing, and that he was content enough to order her around, Elrost let him keep at it. Whers were to help work, if she'd listen to Oarlen then so be it.

"Maybe the bathing caverns wouldn't be such a good idea. But if you want, I can help you clean her up here before you go."

Ellsk knew what to do with the buckets, having been ordered to fill and bring them many times over, but it didn't meant that she remembered. Luckily, Harrier was there to fill in the blanks. The green trotted happily over to the bucket, and started to take it over to Isalia, as requested, before Harrier hissed, reminding her to fill it up on the way over.

Handle between her teeth, Ellsk dragged the bucket through a water trough, filling it reasonably cleanly, before pottering over to place it at Isalia's feet, a little water spilling over the side at her enthusiasm. She then trotted away, to sit by Elrost, rubbing her head against his calf until directed to do something else.

"Herdbeasts are... usually docile creatures, and yes they know me. But I can't guarantee they'll be calm just because I'm here. They don't have the senses that the rest of us do, come up behind them to quickly, and they won't hesitate to kick out, whether it is you or me."

The other statements didn't seem directed to him, and so he didn't respond, instead turning concerned eyes towards a heifer who was showing a little too much of the whites of her eyes to be comfortable.

Droissa paused only momentarily to watch Oarlen heft himself up a rake and then dutifully join her. She pushed her hair out of her face, damp still with rainwater and now with added sweat to it, and then had to smile. He was true to his word, she’d give him that.

After tying her hair back (and wondering why she hadn’t done it sooner), she got back to work. “I’d like that, I think, but I don’t want to leave all of the work to you.” Petting whers seemed like a good way to finish the morning, but that’d also mean that Oarlen would end up doing the bulk of all of their duties and that didn’t sit well with her. It wasn’t fair and honestly, she felt it’d make her look bad. Droissa wasn’t one for slacking, she didn’t want that reputation now.

She watched Ellsk interact with the Gold firelizard out of the corner of her eye. They were incredibly useful beasts. She knew, however, that she’d be the type of person to want her companions to respond to her, and only her. That was also part of her motivation to not simply sit back and relax with the Green. It felt like overstepping.

Dro’s thoughts trailed off so she could listen to Elrost and Oarlen. The beastmaster’s words weren’t entirely reassuring, and the cows still were daunting, but she could be brave. His instructions were simple enough, too. “I think I can manage that. Maybe they’ll be more receptive if I smell like them, anyway.” She said that with a grimace, but her voice had humor in it. It was difficult not to get dirty and she was a little beyond caring about it.

“If we all pitch in we’ll get to soak longer in the pools, anyway. I think I’ll need at least ten good scrubbings to get all of the mud out from between my toes.” She looked wistfully to the door, where the rain still pounded, but kept shovelling.
