Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every 4 or 5 OOC days. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Smaller Isn't a Bad Thing [ 31.07.2590, 6pm ] Event
« on: July 13, 2017, 02:47:44 PM »

It took her eternity, as it felt to Vanelwynne, but Oriath finally finished clutching mid-evening.

The more important part of that was that Oriath was an absurdly slow clutcher, and finishing mid-evening meant that she'd started at the crack of dawn, keeping Vanelwynne (and Leremith) out on the sands coaching her through the unpleasant experience for slightly over twelve hours.

It took you even longer to lay yours at least once, the dragon pointed out to Vanelwynne primly when the goldrider dared complain about how long it was taking. Leremith isn't complaining.

Humans are different, and --

I know. You only had one. But it took you eighteen hours to have one. I have ... The dragon had looked across her eggs and given up her attempt at counting, A lot more than one.

"There's nine right now," Vanelwynne had said aloud, though B'ron wasn't there right then and so she really was only talking to the dragons. While she would have liked her weyrsecond's company, B'ron had other work that he needed to attend to, and Wynne was very well aware of what had to come first. She would have liked if she could get some of her other work done as well, but Oriath refused to let her step away.

And so, she sat.

For slightly over twelve hours.

It was unfair to say she sat entirely alone; lower caverns staff did bring her food, and people who were close enough to her who knew that they were welcome stopped by. She was brought drinks. She decorated the sands weyr a little bit to make it more 'hers' while she was attached to it. She paced. She rubbed Oriath's nose.

By the time the eggs were all on the sands, Vanelwynne had nearly cracked from stir-craziness, but there they were: seventeen healthy dragon eggs.

"Good job," she said, delighted, and couldn't resist but add a sardoni, "Finally."

And so it was left to Oriath to  brightly announce to the dragons of the weyr that her eggs were there! All of them! They were done! And anyone who wanted to come see them -- or her, or Leremith, or Vanelwynne -- was welcome to come celebrate. Sedately, so as not to unsettle them.

Spoiler for OOC:
The OOC thread is here.

Oriath is finished. Leremith's voice intruded into B'ron's mind, and he looked up from the work on his desk, though he looked up to nothing. He stood quickly, wanting to arrive before anyone else, and wishing that Oriath had called him back before she announced it to the entire Weyr. But she was entitled to be proud of her clutch.... he supposed.

Rolling his shoulders to relieve from tension from his writing posture, B'ron exited the room quickly. Making his way across the bowl and noticing, that he was indeed, the first to respond to the call.

How many are there?

A brief pause from Leremith, as B'ron assumed the bronze was counting them, or in conversation with Oriath, either way, B'ron was annoyed that he was left waiting.

17.

17?

Kalestath had clutched 33 eggs, almost exactly twice as many as they had. He supposed it was to be expected, Oriath only a Junior Queen, despite not being very young, but naturally not needing to produce as many as the Senior. Regardless, he didn't even think to blame it on Leremith's age or colour.

"Vanelwynne." He bowed to Oriath with an emotionless smile, "Oriath, congratulations." B'ron directed the next towards Vanelwynne, "'Twas a long clutching, apologies that I couldn't get away from my duties." Not really sorry at all, he said it none the less.

“Please stay here, I’ll be back soon.” Saviavi gave her Bronze, her Blue and her Green firelizards a kiss each on top of their small wedge heads. The trio were unenthused, keening their despair. They hadn’t left her side for almost a solid month now, but they would obey.

Saviavi had dressed, with some help, in a terribly simple white dress. It hung a little loose on her- she’d lost weight and muscle tone during her hospital stay, and looked rather like an awkward sack on her. She either didn’t notice or didn’t care, she was smiling and determined as the healers helped her out of the hall and across the grounds to the Hatching cavern. It’d be her first time back since Kalestath’s fateful night, and also one of the longest stretches she’d been allowed to walk.

The candidate’s legs were healing, slowly but surely, but she had to rebuild strength in them. Three weeks of inactivity, on top of the damage done to the muscle, had left them weakened and unable to support her weight. She’d been strapped into braces for each leg and then taught to use crutches. Every day she had walked, a little more each time, but the healers worried that the emotional trials of this evening would wear on her more quickly than any real physical exhaustion.

Saviavi disagreed. She couldn’t turn away, she couldn’t be afraid. Her dream of Impressing was still as strong as ever and she had a greater motivation now, she was lucky to be alive and she didn’t want to just throw that opportunity away.

The cavern was reached and Saviavi heaved herself inside. The Sand was skirted, out of propriety but also because her crutches would be a mess in the soft stuff. She did her best to bow at Oriath but given her physical state it was more of an exaggerated nod. Approaching the throng of riders gathered around Vanelwynne, she did the same but did not linger as she had with Halirina. She’d like to be helpful, to show her appreciation to the weyrwoman, but she knew she’d just be a hinderance currently.

Feeling demure and trying to look inconspicuous, she shuffled her way off to the side where her crutches wouldn’t be a hazard. She’d find a chair soon, but for now she wanted to watch the junior Gold and marvel at her eggs.

C'ren was in his office doing paper work though there was not much for an assistant weryling master to do. Oriath laid her clutch. C'ren looked up and smiled setting aside the paper he was looking at. I am on my way Amsmith do you know how many so we know how many new weyrling will be in this clutch?

17

C'ren made his way to the Hatching grounds and thought not many but that is okay maybe there would be no mutations in this group though that was not so bad seeing as how there where a lot in the last group. As he walked onto the sands he bowed to the queen and then to the Jr Weyrwoman. "Congratulations on a wonderful Clutch of eggs to  you Weyrwoman Vanelwynne and to Oriath as well. They are lovely and I look forward to the Werylings they will bring."

O’sir had been waiting all day for the announcement of Oriath finishing with the laying of her clutch. She’d begun early in the morning, but these things took time, and he’d be the last person to begrudge an egg-heavy Gold whatever time it would take. But he’d been fidgety all of the morning and afternoon into evening, unable to sit still for long even in the quiet of his office. Compared to the subdued solemnity he’d felt since the fateful conversation with Colvin, it was the greatest amount of energy he’d had since then.

A shame that it couldn’t be directed into anything more useful. But there he was, working through the latest cup in an uncountable stream of klah since he’d woken. Even the nettlesap he’d tipped into it was doing nothing to improve his mood. And though O’sir couldn’t really see or hear the sound of the rain, the dreariness of the day accurately reflected how he felt.

So it was a relief when Saibrasoth finally broke his long silence. She’s done now. His words were as muffled and oppressed as the weather outside and the humidity that had crept even into the interior tunnels of the Weyr. Smaller than Kalestath’s clutch. Not that it was a surprise. The Brown paused again before adding, Seventeen eggs total.

“About time.” Not a sentiment he’d voice to Oriath or he rider, but muttered under his breath all the same. Pushing his chair back from his desk, O’sir rose—his movements waking Thief from where the Blue had been sleeping on one corner as usual. He blinked owlishly at his bonded and then obeyed the unspoken command to go find Grace for the time being.

Not all of the Golds might mind flits as much as Kalestath, but bringing one to the Sands still felt disrespectful to the Candidate Master.

It was a short enough walk to the Hatching Sands, and one that didn’t require him to step outside into the rain, though the noise of it became more audible the closer he got to the Weyr Bowl. The humidity likewise spiked as he stepped into the hatching chamber, given that one side of it was open to the exterior.

Both Oriath and Vanelwynne looked radiant as usual in the wake of a clutching. O’sir waited politely for B’ron to make his congratulations first, and then stepped over in his wake to bow as well. “A healthy-looking clutch as always, Weyrwoman. Oriath.”

Forrikenth’s voice was a deep and pleasant rumble at the back of Seng’s mind, like distant thunder. Oriath says she has finished laying her clutch. Are you going to go congratulate her rider?

Standing under the arch of his dragon’s neck and head in some attempt to get out of the rain for a few moments, Seng looked up at his Blue and blinked against the fat drops of water that fell onto his face anyway. //I think I might,// he answered at length, raking hair off his forehead. The day hadn’t held the wild storms of earlier in the month, but the rain was drumming down relentlessly on the surface of the island nevertheless. Even helping the Fishers on the beach as they were, they might as well have been swimming in the Cove. The water had seeped through the seams in Seng’s riding leathers and soaked his clothes, and Forrikenth’s riding straps were likewise waterlogged.

Might as well do it now. We’re being released early because of the good news.

//Oh really? Let me finish up here, then.//

His and other hands, all eager to be done for the day and see the new eggs—or at least get in out of the rain—made short work of what tasks were left. Once they were done, Seng struck off across the slick grass. All for the better that they were going to be done early; the mist that had been hanging over the jungle all day had finally sunk down to the edge of the water, and the fog was thickening in a way that made his spine itch uncomfortably. How many times had Beach Snakes struck from out of fog like that? Hopefully it would clear off before the following morning.

Things seemed oddly still as Seng made his way toward the entrance to the Hatching Sands, glancing up at Forrikenth as the Blue followed him on foot. //Do you think I should change first?// He looked down at his dripping wet leathers. //I don’t know if it’s exactly respectful to show up soaking wet and smelling of fish…//

Why? Everyone knows our Wing fishes this time of day. Besides, this way you might get to say hello before they’re flooded with so many well-wishers. Despite the volume, Forrikenth’s words were gentle. He didn’t necessarily feel comfortable approaching Oriath on anything other than official business, but he recognized that Seng had developed a soft spot for her since those months ago when they’d spoken in the Weyr Hall.

//I suppose you’re right.// Seng looked up at his dragon once more and smiled sheepishly. //Want to wait for me in our weyr then? You can get me when I’m done, and at least get out of the rain for now.//

Gladly. He rose in a shower of water, flicking it playfully onto Seng who cursed him lowly but without heat.

Seng had suspected others would already have arrived by the time he did, but at least it wasn’t crowded yet. He bowed formally to Oriath as he entered the Hatching Sands, feeling uncomfortably wet and clammy once he was out of the rain. The mingled humidity and heat of the room was rapidly making his dark hair frizz. Nevertheless, he smiled slightly and raised one hand in a small wave before clasping them behind his back. He’d like the opportunity to speak to Vanelwynne herself, but if she were busy with the other ranked riders, he’d understand.

The eggs were lovely, anyway. Oriath might not lay as many at once as Kalestath did, but their shells were a pretty array of colors, and they looked healthy. Which was all that really mattered, Seng supposed.

Most people know Seng as he/him. Close friends use they/them. Seng is okay with either.

It wasn't until after Beach Wing had been dismissed from their fishing early for the night, that Inanna finally made her way to the hatching sands. The green rider had planned to visit earlier in the day, but the clutching had gone much longer than expected, and she had simply waited too long in the hope that the announcement would come before lunch ended.

Regardless, after quickly unpacking all her equipment, Inanna threw on a clean, loose dress to help counteract the heat within the hatching sands, and Cremath lightly made her way from Weyr ledge to Weyr bowl.

She had planned for Miss to come with with her. And the Gold curled around her forearm, twittering sternly at Terra and Khaos that they must stay behind. The Gold wouldn't have the other two embarrassing her in front of anyone. Khaos obeyed, flying up to the rafters for the night, but Terra hissed at the little Gold, and blinked between.

"Shard it." The two were not getting along well, Miss refusing to give up on ordering Terra around, and Terra simply refusing to do anything the little Gold said. "I told you to be nicer to him. Now you all have to stay behind."

Unwinding herself from Inanna's arm, the Gold slunk away, annoyed at the chastisement, and probably looking to get into a fight with Terra now.

Seems like Khaos is the good one.

"Oh shush you."

Not allowing her rowdy fair to ruin her happiness tonight, she entered the hatching grounds with a smile, whispering to someone nearby to bring her two cups of klah. The clutching had been long, and Vanelwynne was sure to be tired, Inanna hoped that a cup would raise her spirits slightly so that she could enjoy the congratulations she was sure to receive. Slightly detouring when she realised O'sir and B'ron had beat her to it, she instead approached Seng, who seemed to, to be waiting for an opportunity to speak to the Junior Weyrwoman.

"It's a beautiful clutch as always, isn't it?" She said to the blue rider.

Seng hadn’t really expected another to approach him, but he was more than happy to engage another visitor in conversation while they waited. He and Inanna might not know each other especially well, but he recognized her from the work his own Wing did with Beach.

“It is,” he agreed, smiling at her before looking back out over the clutch again. Nestled lovingly in the sand as they were, they were beautiful even from a distance. With an assortment of greys, greens, blues, pinks, they were quite a sight to behold. The colors on the outside of their shells might not mean anything with regard to what would hatch from them, but they were certainly pretty enough in their own right.

“I’m relieved to see there’s no Gold, though.” That one, at least, would have stuck out—slightly larger, metallic, and unmistakable in color. Crowding four Queens into a Weyr was going to get cramped enough, once Minath was old enough that she would start to Rise and produce clutches of her own. But at least for the time being, nature had been merciful.

Certainly, some of the Candidates would be disappointed. Wasn’t it the dream of so many young girls to Impress to the next Queen? Nevertheless, Seng thought it best that there wouldn’t be another hatching so soon.

The last hatching has left Lokin feeling distant. From everything really. But at the prospect of more eggs, she found herself getting more excited. She was finding that being a candidate, and the chance to become a rider was more apealing than it was. She kept her flits away, how ever, choosing to leave them in her room. They didn't argue, afraid of the queens at this point.

She arrived at the sands and bowed to the long clutching queen and her rider, and then drifted to the side, her eyes on the eggs, taking count of all seventeen of them. Someday soon she'd have her own dragon. Or at least someday in the future.

Desh had to extricate Starling from his shirt before heading down to the sands. The queen had announced that she'd clutched, and even with the violence of the last clutching in mind, he wasn't going to miss this. His slim form was dressed rather demurely, in all black. He was here another hatching. How long it took for his dragon to come to him, Desh had no idea, but he'd find out.

The slim man stepped onto the sands quietly, and then with a florish of a hand and a deep bow he gave the clutching queen a smile.

"Congradulations, My Queen, Weyrwoman Vanelwynne."

With that he moved towards Savavi. She looked like she could sit down, but he wasn't about to push it.

"Beautiful, aren't they?"

This was perhaps one of the more diversely colourful clutches Inanna had seen in a long time. Kalestath's clutches always had the benefit of being large, therefore, regardless of colours, they were always an impressive site to behold. But this clutch was bright, only two or three dull whites and brown, to mar the rainbow, but there was a beautiful pink, like a flower newly bloomed. And blue greens, jungle greens, grass greens.

Sometimes Inanna wished that greens could clutch. That she would feel the pride that Vanelwynne and Kalestath and Eimerra must feel everytime they looked out across the hatching sands and saw what their dragons had laboured to produce.

But Cremath was perfect, perfect for her, and perfect in her position in the Weyr. Besides, if Kalestath's reds continued on the way they had a few months ago, it was entirely possible that there wouldn't be enough candidates that would continue standing. However, that was a thought for another and on that note, she could wholeheartedly agree with Seng's quiet relief for the lack of a Gold egg.

"I'm with you there. Let us hope that Minath flies at a convenient time, because we seem to be running out of months in the turn."

More dragons were always a welcome sign, but four Golds in one Weyr were a lot even on the mainland, where it was easy to transfer dragons and people from one Weyr to another depending on their need.

Tythinaden had spent the last month or so getting used to being a candidate. A few classes, and some proof and he had been allowed to go to this clutch. The idea was odd for the former healer, but even with Tess now more often away from him than near, Ty felt this was right. After all, Vicith couldn't be wrong could he?

Ty was quiet as he entered the hatching grounds, his gold on his shoulder. He knew to keep her in hand, but the queen wasn't likely to run off or cause problems. If Ty hadn't been so nervous, she'd have been with Tess. As it was, Sunset was the only hint that Ty wasn't as confident as he looked. He did bow to the gold and her rider before moving off towards the small gaggle of candidates. He was new, but older than most of them. He has maybe two years to find his dragon. Six hatching's, if he's lucky. He already knew he could return to the Healer Hall if needed, and he'd requested to continue his work there, as much as a candidate is allowed. Plus having some medical training would be a boon to any situation.

He looked at the eggs, with a new eye. He'd always seen them as beautiful, but distant things. Someday a dragon would hatch for him. From those eggs. Of course the question was, was his dragon already gone? One of those who had gone between? Already Ty's fear was growing as he stood there, quietly, outside the group, his gaze on the eggs. He did see one of the women he'd ended up patching up the month before. Saviavi. He didn't go up to her, his attention again taken to the eggs. Sunset cooed quietly at him, tail curling around his neck and her body held low. She'd felt a gold dragon's anger by proxy before. She was only here because Ty needed her, weather he admitted it out loud or not.

It was easier to just look at the eggs. The sands were big enough to take up the majority of her peripherals, and she was the picture of an eager candidate, engrossed in thoughts of the future. That she was using the clutch to also avoid any looks her way wouldn’t be completely obvious, unless you knew her well. She didn’t want to see sympathy or pity, no encouraging smiles or nods of approval. Saviavi wasn’t special and she didn’t want to be treated as such. Not anymore.

This time around the eggs seemed to be a little more colorful, a little more inviting. Each shell had an individual and distinct pattern, at least she thought so based on what she could see. Savi thought she liked that. They’d be easier to keep track of come hatching day.

Her thoughts were halted by a voice and she turned to see Zondesh there. He wasn’t staring at her crutches or the leg braces, but at the eggs like she’d been. Saviavi’s expression softened to a smile and she nodded. “There’s a pink tinged one, rather like a jungle flower. I can’t wait to touch it.” She was determined to be able to walk independently in time for the Touching.

The distraction of Zondesh had her looking a little more closely at who else had come to see the eggs. She remembered back to Kalestath’s clutching, her heart hurting. Her and Zondesh, Isalia and Colvin, bright Oarlen and lovely Lokin, they’d all been so excited then. Now three of them would have lasting injuries and one wouldn’t be returning to candidacy at all. None of them had Impressed, either.

Savi shook her head, letting her loose hair get tousled and not caring to fix it. In the month or so that she’d been hospitalized the color had regained some of its natural red, with no readily available sunlight to keep it bleached lighter. It felt a little more appropriate that way, more real.

“How’ve you been? Handling the whole old man candidate thing still?”

Isa made her way to the sands with Lil on her shoulder. She reached up to touch the gold her right arm still hurting from the broken arm she had. There where scars on it from the attack. She looked at the gold dragon first and bowed to her then looked at the eggs. There where 17 she could count them and she wondered what was in them.

She knew she could not go near them just yet and after the last clutch she was not sure she wanted a dragon anymore. She was scared of the Reds. She hoped this Clutch did not have any of those in them. She looked over at Savi and smiled at the girl. When Lil rose again she was going to give her one of her eggs that was how she was going to do it. She might also keep one of the eggs though Lazy was a hand full.

She also noticed the Healer that was now a candidate she wondered if he was okay with all this. She stood against the wall as she walked in and stayed there as she looked

Zondesh felt the need to be near a familiar face. Loosing Colvin had hurt. Desh had felt the man was his friend, and for the hatching to push the other harper out... well Desh wasn't going to give up, even if he was covered in scars now. His left side was in lots of pain, but he'd be ok eventually. No doubt his dragon would have all sorts of annoyances. Knowing his luck, it would be one of those reds.

He glanced at Saviavi. He was never one to notice a bad wound. After all, she'd be walking soon. "I prefer the lined blue one. It looks like it's got a crack in it." Much like his heart lately. Loosing his weyrmate, and now that last hatching, he was not pleased with what was happening in his life. He was holding onto his music though. He felt Starling press against his mind, his bronze obviously wanting to comfort him. The blonde man smiled a little at the comfort he gained from his long time friend.

"Old man candidate thing. Thanks. I'm fine. You? Your the old matron of the group." His tone was a little more sarcastic than normal. His tone softened as he came to the last sentence. His gaze was still drawn to the eggs.

Spoiler for Drewliet:
@Drewliet Hope that works!

Saviavi laughed. A real and honestly loud laugh. She swatted at Zondesh, only half seriously and half reigned in to keep her balance. “Matron! As if.” She drew herself up to look taller and a little more stately. “But if you insist then I suppose it’s up to us to make sure this next hatching goes well.”

The candidate took a few hobbled steps so she could easily place a hand on Desh’s arm, and then continued to walk as if guiding him along. “Come now, let’s sit. We’ve got to discuss tactic, being thoroughly experienced in the ways of dragons as we are.” She wasn’t going to admit that her crutches were biting into her underarms, nor that her legs were beginning to feel strained.

With Zondesh hopefully beside her still, she’d fall into the closest seat with a breathier sigh of content than she meant. “It’s good, I think, that this clutch is smaller. Kalestath’s massive ones drained our numbers,” not to mention killed a few, too. “It’ll be smoother, I think, with less going on and less people on the sands to muddle things up.” Saviavi tried to sound positive and to avoid certain words, it’d do no good to cast shade on Oriath’s progeny.

Desh took Saviavi's swat on his shoulder half smiling at her laugh. It was good to hear laughter. Real laughter. Desh was missing his roommate, but that wasn't something he could focus on (though a few of his former roomates pillows had to be replaced). He nodded at her as she mentioned them making the next hatching better.

"It could be anyways."

He moved with her towards the seats. He didn't bring up the fact that most of the candidates were in pain in some way. His leg and side and arm and even face had gotten the bad end of a baby red. It had shredded his arm, and that was still wrapped, but there was no reason for him to still be here. It was the nasty red scar on his cheek that would make it hard to forget that he had faced a red.

"I hope it's smoother. Oriath deserves a gentle hatching."

The unsaid "and so do we" was left unsaid by the dirty blond candidate. He hoped his dragon was in there somewhere. He was tired of waiting. At this point it just felt wrong. He was still here. Three years later. Almost four. He'd make it someday. He thought of his old Weyrmate and his Wife before that. They'd want him to find a dragon. Find his dragon.

"We'll get more candidates, I'm not worried about that, though the holder's might have to start sharing."

“She’s a beautiful dragon,” Savi said sincerely, casting a glance toward the brooding Gold. Oriath was as molten as they came, and here on the hot sands her color seemed intensified. She pulled her eyes away with some effort, perhaps thinking she was going to miss something, but she didn’t want to be rude. “She’ll do well, hasn’t she always?” In comparison to the last two hatchings, Oriath was a gift.

Saviavi appraised Zondesh now that they were seated and comfortable. He had acquired scars, too, and she thought they were most fetching. In an era where threadscore separated the veterans from those greener, she thought their scars set them apart from the norm. No, they hadn’t fought a menace for hours every day, for days on end, but they’d faced something far more unpredictable and come out all the wiser.

She nodded to him in agreement, grinning a little wickedly. “I think if my parents were alive they’d be afraid to produce more children, lest they also get Searched and forsake their good Holder ways further.” Though she wasn’t familiar with Zondesh’s background, Savi had never been quiet about her own. “It’s a hard call, though, truly. The crafts are making progress, the holders are starting to secure their own stronghold again. Candidacy once seemed like such a good opportunity for advancement in the weyr, but now it’s very bleak I think.”

With that, Inanna had hit upon yet another worry that Seng knew they weren’t the only ones in the Weyr to be concerned about. Two Queens rising and fighting in the air was the last thing they needed. And even if they didn’t, there was no telling how Kalestath or Minath would feel about having to share a Hatching Sands. Oriath and Imyth seemed to have adjusted to it easily enough, but perhaps that had something to do with their and their riders’ individual personalities. There was no telling if the Weyr’s Senior Queen would be so understanding and forgiving.

Seng didn’t imagine she would.

“No kidding. Months in the turn and space in the Weyr.” It wasn’t nearly as crowded as it had been at Fort Weyr in the past, since they’d been able to better suit this place to their population’s needs… but still. Where would they find the space to expand this way?

Concerns for people more highly ranked than him, Seng supposed.

But there was a little bit of room for lightness too, so the Blue rider smiled at Inanna slightly playfully. “Good thing there’s more Blues and Greens than anything else.”

Inanna crinkled her nose at him as she smiled, "That's right. You can never have too many greens and blues." She finished with a wink. They were an underappreciated lot, but not from lack of Inanna trying. Inanna appreciated all riders equally, as long as they contributed to the goings on of the Weyr, then Inanna was happy for them and happy for everyone.

"Come on," she bounced over to him to loop their arms together. Sure they didn't really know each other all that well before now, but Inanna found him fun to talk to, and she was affectionate to those that she enjoyed being around, "Let's go give our congratulations to the beaming parents." Cheery as she was, Inanna couldn't avoid the bit of sarcasm there, B'ron was exactly the kind of person to beam. He was always polite, of that there was no doubt, but Inanna didn't usually get a feeling of... happiness from him.

"Weyrsecond, Weyrwoman. Congratulations as always on a beautiful clutch. May it bring many happy returns." A suitable enough response from her, neither would have any particular reason to know who she was, but Inanna didn't really mind that.

Surprised though he was, Seng just laughed when Inanna linked her arm with his, more than happy to follow her over to Vanelwynne and B’ron. He did pitch his voice low, though—not wanting anyone to think he was being disrespectful—to say, “I’m not sure he would do anything so undignified as beam.” Seng couldn’t recall ever having seen the Weyrsecond smile, not that he was much in his company. But the man did have a certain reputation for seriousness.

A bit shy now that he was actually supposed to be greeting them, Seng smiled softly at them both and inclined his head respectfully. “Hello.” It was directed a bit more toward Vanelwynne than B’ron, but he didn’t want to be so presumptuous as to address the woman by her name, even if they had been briefly friendly in the past. “It looks like a wonderful clutch.”

Beyond that, he wasn’t entirely sure what to say. In a less public place, he might have asked the Weyrwoman how she was, but this wasn’t quite the time. Not with so many other people around them, including her dour-faced Weyrsecond. The last thing that Seng wanted to do was give offense.
