Guest Info Plot & Events

Current Month
2.2591 0A.R.
9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Hello and Welcome!

http://southernwindsweyr.net/Images/news icon copy.png We are a mature, 9th Interval AU Pern. We've destroyed almost the entire planet in a catastrophic event. While we feature 2 new mutations, we stick pretty close to canon. We've Ranks, roles, and positions for just about anyone who wants to get involved, with a relaxed community. Play and post at your own pace. Swing by and say hello!

Southern Winds uses a subaccount system to distinguish between Players and their Characters. So REGISTER with your Player Account Name and the admin will assign you your Character Subaccount once your character is approved!

Southern Winds is a Mature Roleplay. This means we allow for sexual, violent content that would be found in a struggling, 9th Interval Pern. Sex is common place in the Weyr and terrible deaths are no stranger here. As such, our players should be 18+. These themes are to be handled maturely at all times.

It was hot even this late in the evening, what with the sun not having set yet ‘cause it was summer. Swelteringly so, despite the long shadows slanting down into the Bowl from the ridge of the dead volcano that housed the Weyr at large. The air felt almost thick enough to swim in, humid and damp with no signs of letting up with night time considering there were no breezes yet, even blowing in off of the water past the Cove. That fact alone meant that most were inside, doing their best to escape the heat in the deeper—and thus cooler—tunnels. But Rinokan had an itch that demanded something more than just hiding away in the tunnels. Which was what had led him out into the Bowl after dinner to do… something.

He had no idea what.

That was, until he’d caught sight of a Green dragon and her rider doing some kind of exercises out on the grass. The emerald green of her hide put even that lush carpet to shame, and she nearly seemed to sparkle in the descending sunlight. Who she and her rider were, Rinokan had no idea. Despite the some six months or so that he’d been a Candidate, he still couldn’t hope to know all the weyrlings and riders.

How Oarlen kept track of them all, much less which flits belonged to who, he’d never understand.

But he drifted closer even so, hands in pockets as he walked and watched them both. Rinokan didn’t have an intention of disturbing them, exactly, but he was curious about what they were doing. A fact which ultimately led to him sitting in the grass a little ways away to observe.

Some sort of drill, maybe? It looked more peculiar with just one dragonpair. Maybe they were recovering from some injury and doing exercises so they could rejoin their Wing? Or they were weyrlings? Big as the Green looked, though, she seemed fully grown to Rinokan. Not that he was a perfect judge of dragon ages, by any means.

Either way, there was something soothing about watching them. It didn’t even occur to him that it might seem odd that he’d stopped to watch them.

Just because Saissith was done growing didn’t mean that Haithen nor she were done training. They wouldn’t graduate until the end of the turn, so they still had a lot of work ahead of them. A lot of time to prep for when they might move into another wing. They wanted into Jungle but… well, how likely was that?

You’re getting distracted, she huffed a little, trotting through the formation. She slowed though as her blue eyes level toward him. While he didn’t sense any frustration coming from her, merely a statement of fact, he almost felt guilty.

There she was, splendid and beautiful, working so hard… and he was just lost in thought.

//I’m sorry, my love. I just seem out of sorts today.// Haithen answered. Perhaps it was the heat. Though Haithen had dressed down considerably in nothing but a loose top and short shorts, braiding his long hair back, that didn’t mean he was still immune to the heat.

It’s fine. she answered, thrumming softly. We’ve an audience.

Haithen glanced over his shoulder to see what she was referring to – or rather, who. He half expected Taeghen, but no. This was someone new. “Evening,” Haithen said by way of greeting.

Shards, she was as pretty as her dragon.

Previously, that just wasn’t the sort of thing he tended to notice, but, well… that didn’t make it less true. This rider, whoever she was, was gorgeous, a matching counterpoint to the brilliant hide of the Green she was bonded to. Rinokan was glad, at least, that he wasn’t prone to blushing, but he still felt a bit ridiculous as he re-crossed his legs and straightened his spine. Old habits his mother had drilled into him, to be polite.

“Evening yourself.” He felt momentarily guilty for having bothered them after all, but not enough to just leave. Because now he was curious, and any moment that he could have a conversation with someone who’d already Impressed, was an opportunity he was going to take. So he gestured, with a piece of grass he’d absently torn out of the ground, at where her dragon was standing behind her. “What are you working on?”

It was clearly some kind of exercise, even if he didn’t know enough yet to identify what it was.

Haithen wiped at the sweat along the back of his neck before he moved closer to the spectator sitting in the grass. If he couldn’t focus, might as well socialize for a bit.

Saissith seemed to agree, though she returned to trotting through the pattern she’d been working on before. If Haithen was distracted chit chatting, then she wouldn’t be distracted by him. Win-win.

//I’m not that bad,// he teased.

No, you’re not, she answered fondly.

Haithen stopped outside arm’s reach and looked back to his Green. She was sleek and lean, quick and agile. Her bursts of speed were impressive, even on the ground. Though she was certainly a prettier sight in the air. Though Haithen hadn’t wanted to draw attention by flying around, it seemed they had regardless. “It’s a flight drill. Part of a formation for heavy Threadfall. For a lower altitude wing. She’s just practicing the motions. I normally run alongside her but it’s so… so hot that I had to stop.” Haithen smiled a little more. Not to mention Saissith was simply too big for him to keep up with her anymore.

Then, to be polite, he extended his hand. “I’m Haithen. That’s Saissith.”

Rinokan nodded thoughtfully at that answer. It made sense that it’d be something they’d be practicing, then. Thread might no longer be falling, but it was important that the riders not forget how to fly it regardless. That much had been explained to him before, and it was an idea that had a lot of merit. After all, that was how knowledge got kept; there were things that still got taught to the Miner apprentices that weren’t used often, or even rarely. But they were still a required subject so that someday, when and if they were needed again, it wouldn’t have gotten lost.

Not like so much in the Pass that had been.

“Don’t blame you. It’s as hot as the Springs out here, and just as humid.” He was sweating just sitting there in the grass; but despite the physical training she’d been going through with her dragon, she still looked fucking stunning. That was the real tone of a rider, Rinokan supposed. The Candidates might do their own, simpler versions of the drills so that they’d all be in shape and not completely hopeless when and if D’zel and the other Weyrlingmasters got them, but they didn’t do it every day like the weyrlings did. And not to the same extent.

It was impressive, really.

Leaning up, Rinokan took the offered hand and shook it. That was something he'd had to get used to as well; in the Hold, where he’d been raised, shaking a lady’s hand wasn’t the most polite of gestures. But in the Weyr, it was more common place than anything else. All being equal and whatnot. “Nice to meet you both. My name’s Rinokan.”

Haithen chuckled a little when the newcomer remarked about the heat. He wasn’t wrong, not by a long shot. The island certainly had a nice way about being so humid that, well, sometimes it did feel like Haithen was in the springs.

Since Rinokan wasn’t a familiar face, Haithen assumed they must be a holder or crafter. Though that didn’t exactly matter, it was just idly noted. Haithen smiled a little more so before he asked, “Did you come out here to escape the heat? I fear there’s no real way to get away from it, though I suppose the Springs is a bit of a relief.” Haithen was certainly looking forward to scrubbing the sweat and grime of the day away once they were done.

Probably soon too.

Saissith trotted near by, coming up short so she didn’t overwhelm the poor boy. No one particularly liked when a dragon loomed over them. My wing joints are itchy, she informed, none-too-subtly letting Haithen know that oiling would be required before he sought out a bath.

“Not exactly.” Her guess that he’d been trying to find some relief from the heat had been a good one. And for most, it probably would have been accurate. After all, the Bowl had a way of sucking breezes down into it, funneled there by the pockets of lower air pressure and slightly cooler temperatures that settled within the mouth of the old volcano. But Rinokan’s own reason for being there had been less practical. “More like I just didn’t want to be inside anymore. Needed something to do.” He gestured around at the Bowl. “Walking seemed as good as any.”

Being shy wasn’t in his nature, but he did feel a little, momentarily awkward at admitting the next part. “I like watching y’all train, though. Maybe that’ll be me someday.” Rinokan flashed a grin then, briefly.

Oh, he could only hope. Though at least he had a number of turns left before he had to even begin worrying about aging out. Almost ten of the damn things, though Rinokan hoped he didn’t have to wait that long for whatever dragon might lay in store for him.

Maybe there was one on the Sands even now.

His attention shifted to the Green—Saissith—when she trotted closer. “She’s beautiful,” he added, hoping it sounded as sincere as he meant it and not as lame as he felt it did.

Haithen glanced at his dragon when she let him know she needed oiling, idly eyeing her wings. As much as he didn’t relish the idea of such a task in the warmth, he couldn’t very well leave her in discomfort to go rinse off either.

His attention was brought back to the... Candidate... when he admitted he liked watching them train. That actually made Haithen blush a little. “I wish you luck then,” he answered, because that seemed appropriate. “Though watching drills doesn’t seem all that interesting. Maybe because I’m part of them?” Haithen teased a little.

At the compliment, Saissith lowered her head and her eyes shifted to a deep blue. A demure act on her part. He’s sweet, she remarked quietly to Haithen.

“She thinks you’re sweet,” Haithen translated for the Candidate, since her terribly sweet but shy dragon wasn’t about to talk to him. Which was fine too. Most didn’t talk to anyone but their Rider.

“Thanks.” Maybe she was just being polite, but he wasn’t about to turn down some wishes of good luck when it came to Impressing. He might not be wholly as superstitious as some other folk he knew, but the gesture was still appreciated. Even if she didn’t really know anything about him. So for her, he ventured a bit of a smile. “Guess I’m just weird, but drills are impressive. S’ nice knowing that riders have to work at things still.” Rinokan’s smile shifted more into a grin. “Gives a bit more hope for someone like me ever Impressing in the first place.”

It wasn’t meant to be self-deprecating, since Rinokan himself didn’t see it that way. But he knew the way his family and some of the other Miners felt about the odds of him someday walking off the Sands with a dragon of his own.

He did blink then, glancing between the rider and her Green. “Oh.” Surprised, and a bit fascinated at how easily they communicated with one another. “Thank you?” Rinokan wasn’t really sure if he should address that to Haithen or Saissith, so directing it to both seemed the way to go. And he did smile again a bit, a quick flash of one. “I don’t think anyone’s ever called me that before.”

It seemet like it was forever ago he’d been a candidate. A world away, before impressing Saissith and everything became shiny and new. Better. Not that Haithen was going to say all that either. It seemed almost cruel to go on about how amazing it was to be bonded to a dragon to someone who hoped one day to be so – when it might not happen.

Haithen certainly hoped that every candidate would find the dragon for them, but he knew that some aged out. That was just the reality of Candidacy.

Even so, he did add, “I’m sure you’ll find a dragon for you.” Whatever manner of dragon that might be. If Haithen could impress, anyone could.

Saissith thrummed pleasantly at the conversation, and the good will her Rider felt toward the other.

He hesitated only a moment before asking, “Would you like to come along? Saissith’s wings are a bit dry so… If you’d want to continue to talk or the like…” Haithen didn’t want to press gang the poor Candidate into helping, he understood candidacy was already full of chores. But he certainly wouldn’t mind the company while he tended his dragon.

Rinokan hadn’t been angling to take up more of the rider’s time, but the invitation was definitely a welcome one. So when she asked if he’d like to go with her, he practically bounced to his feet. He was nothing if not perpetually full of energy. “I’d love to! And I don’t mind helping out.” As far as he was concerned, any opportunity to be close to a dragon was something to jump at. Whatever the truth of things, Rinokan was convinced that the better he understood dragons, the sooner he would Impress. Surely that had something to do with being receptive to dragonets?

Then, because he was curious, he glanced between Haithen and Saissith again. “How long have the two of you been bonded?” More private folk might consider it a personal question, but he’d always been rather oblivious to that sort of thing. He wanted to know, so why shouldn’t he ask?

Scoria chose that moment to make his presence known too, popping out of Between from… wherever he’d been. Since they weren’t working, Rinokan didn’t care much where the Brown went and what trouble he got himself into. The both of them were rather independent creatures. But if he had to guess, his flit had been finding himself a meal, judging by the bright green contentment of his eyes and the way he licked his chops as he landed on Rinokan’s shoulder.

“This is Scoria,” he added, figuring it was only polite to introduce him too.
