Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Gold and Brown mix really well [28.08.2590 12pm]
« on: August 17, 2017, 06:58:30 PM »

The growing tension within the Weyr and the unfortunate events that had preceded that early morning had done nothing but make the Gold and her rider more on edge; unease cursing through their bond and no doubt bleeding over into their daily personalities.

Eimerra was as kind and gentle as always, seeing to her duties as any gold rider should. She helped as much as she could while her Gold lazed about and grew her clutch within her. The stress from the dwindling fish schools and the hope that Southern Hope brought with it's construction only cause conflict and restlessness to settle into the Jr Weyrwoman's bones. Her Gold's growing discomfort from being so egg heavy did not help with each passing day.

Eimerra and Imyth looked to their mates for comfort. Imyth often nuzzling and laying close to her handsome brown partner as much as she could, seeking refuge from the tension in her in the warm hide of Maelboroth. Eimerra confided her worries and concerns in X'kis; finding him to be a kindred soul and man she was growing to deeply care for and respect. She had found herself opening up to him in a way she had not done with all but one or two other Weyrmates.

The petite woman had just pulled on her flowing, lose fitting clothing that most new her to wear and was brushing her long hair, her mind wondering through the current events with in the Weyr when she felt Imyth rise from the ledge. Her brown eyes turned to the Gold as she lifted herself with a huff from the ledge and glided on the thermal currents down into the sands. She did not need the Gold to inform her of where she was going. There was only one likely cause with the emotions that were bleeding over to her through their bond.

//I am here Mine, I shall join you shortly// said Eimerra, sending her Gold soothing thoughts. The petite woman looked out passed the ledge, the sun barely having reached it's zenith. Her eyes turned away from looking at the sun indirectly and looked back at her retreating gold when she felt her speak.
I will let you know when I am finished she cooed to her rider before sending thoughts of affection to her mate as well. The gold was excited for her impending clutch, it would be a handsome clutch she had no doubt having been sired but such a strong male.

Eimerra turned to X'kis as she threw somethings into a bag and smiled, ”It is time”. She no doubt that Maelboroth had already informed his rider of what was happening and so left her words simple as she bustled about the Weyr preparing for the move to one of the weyr's just off the clutching sands. She groaned as she thought about the heat that she would now have to endure but was thankful for the the cooler weather that was starting to settle in to the Weyr.

Imyth paid little attention to Oriath, having grown accustom to sharing the Sands with the other Gold. While it sent the already prody Queen into a state of mild agitation she pushed it aside as she silently claimed a part of the sands as 'Hers' and settled in to lay her eggs. Her sides heaved as she clutched, her eggs growing in number on the warm sands. Her eye whirled as her tale twitched with each movement from the other gold from the corner of her eyes. It was not in a Gold's nature to share things but when there was no other option, they could do so... at least as long as they did not try to rise together.

It did not take long before Imyth laid curled about her eggs, pride and affection swirling in her eyes. She turned her head to her brown mate and made soft noise of affection before asking him to come settle next to her and look over their clutch. Once Maelboroth was settled against her she called for rider.
Come see Mine She called to Eimerra as she nuzzled against the Brown that had settled next to her. She crooned to her mate in pride at their beautiful clutch and wrapped her tail around his What a glorious clutch you have sired she cooed to the handsome brown.

Eimerra smiled as she made her way along the path near the sands, having settling into a weyr just off from where her Gold had clutched. It was the first true smile in what felt like months. It had seemed that with each passing phase of the moon things had only gotten worse; from the death of R'sin to the disastrous hatching... but Imyth's clutch brought new hope, just has Oriath's had.

//Oh Imyth! Maelboroth! What a handsome clutch you have sired!// Eimerra exclaimed to the proud dragons curled about their eggs the moment her eyes fell upon them. The large gold stretched her neck out enough to nuzzle her rider once she was close enough before pulling back away and peering down at her eggs.

Eimerra looked to X'kis with a vibrant smile and leaned into him for a moment ”What proud parents we have here” she said with a teasing chuckle, for the first time in months a hint at the playful women finally showing through.

Imyth nuzzled at Maelboroth one more time before she happily announced the new arrivals to the Weyr and inviting all to come see such a handsome clutch.

Spoiler for OOC:
It is that time! Imyth has finally set down in the hatching sands to clutch. The proud parents will be gladly accept any that wish to come congratulate them and see such a fine clutch. Although Imyth loves those little playful flitters. She will have no problem putting them in their place if they get a little too rambunctious for her taste.  So, if you have a firelizard that's a little unruly... they should probably be left at home.

The more egg-heavy Imyth got, the cluckier Maelboroth, and to a lesser extent, X’kis got.

The brown dragon was ever attentive to his mate’s needs, rarely leaving her side and doing whatever needed to be done to ensure she was comfortable. He enjoyed having a somewhat permanent mate, and the fact that she was busy developing their clutch inside her filled him with immense pride. It was not many a dragon who could say they sired a clutch, and of them, a brown was unheard of. But there he was, mated to a gold dragon and doing everything in his power to make her more comfortable. If he were the sort, there was no doubt the dragon would preen at the thought. But selfless as he was it was all about his mate. Even X’kis had trouble asking him to take them places, and by the eight month had stopped asking for anything more than a lift when he needed to get somewhere. In light of the situation it was forgiven easily enough, and amused  X’kis more than annoyed him.

The weyrsecond was more preoccupied with ensuring he and Eimerra were a united front on all bases. He accompanied her to each and every event, and made sure that meals at least, were taken together, particularly in the main hall. There were duties to attend to, certainly, and X’kis was perfectly capable of doing his own thing, but there was no doubting he was Eimerra’s weyrmate. There was no speculation surrounding his loyalty to her, regardless of the short period for which she would have it, and so far as they, personally went, there was no doubt that he would continue to keep in touch even after her next flight. Young though she may be, one cannot spend a turn sharing someone’s bed without having something of an emotional connection, and while distant, X’kis was not cold.

The past few months, in fact had been… heartening. His responsibilities had gotten heavier, but the regular interaction was a nice change, and while he wasn’t going to hesitate to return to Mountain Wing once this was all over (if W’sar would still have him) he would remember the past few months with great fondness.

She leaves to lay them, mine. Maelboroth spoke softly, crooning his encouragement as Imyth glided from their ledge to the sands.

X’kis smiled as Imyth turned to him, nodding affirmation when she spoke and closing off the satchel that contained his meagre belongings – at least it made moving easier, and he’d rather join Eimerra on the hatching sands in case he was needed then remain in her weyr. “Lesiff, If you wouldn’t mind?” he held the satchel up to the blue flit, giving him an image of the weyr that they were to move to and waiting until he returned, empty handed to offer a soft ”Thank you” before moving to help Eimerra gather her stuff together.

I wish to watch. Maelboroth rumbled, waiting for Imyth’s consent before gliding on down to perch on the hatching sand heights. He would not move closer until invited to do so, though he watched with great curiosity as the smaller gold focused her attention on laying each egg, his head swiveling towards Oriath whenever she moved as well as Kalestath who had made her presence known earlier – watching in case the two golds decided today was the day they refused to share the sands. He moved only once while his mate labored, to deliver Eimerra and X’kis to the clutching weyr yet unoccupied before returning, absolutely enthralled by the appearance of each new egg.

When she was done, he barely waited for her approval before gliding down to join her, rumbling soft apology to Oriath at his invasion of the sands but feeling no need to leave. His mate was there afterall, and he was not big enough to intrude on her side. He did make sure to settle on the side of Imyth closest to the other queen dragon, however, feeling more comfortable with his body in between the other gold and his mate, and of course the twelve eggs she had curled herself around, and it was an easy enough task to lift his head above hers to take in the downright awe-inspiring sight of their clutch. They are perfect. You have done wonderfully. Maelboroth responded as Imyth nuzzeled him, humming his pride in his mate as he wrapped his tail with hers, turning away only briefly to watch X’kis and Eimerra approach before giving his mate, and his eggs, his undivided attention.

X’kis, for his part, was about as awe-filled as his dragon, an arm resting easily around her waist as they looked over the clutch. He wasn’t a bronzerider, to have been able to anticipate the possibility of siring a clutch, and his pride in his dragon, and the pale queen beside him was almost overwhelming. It was, indeed a once in a lifetime opportunity and despite being a lesser colour, the brown had managed to sire almost as many eggs as Thianorth the previous turn. It was a testament to his bonded that they would have never experienced had the bronze riders of the weyr not slighted Imyth’s flight.

To Eimerra, he offered a soft kiss to her forehead, squeezing her as she leant into him. An affectionate gesture that spoke volumes of what he felt at that time. He would have to thank W’sar for calling them back early, when next he saw him. ”Well done Imyth. You and Maelboroth have done a fine job indeed. You should be proud.” He said softly, offering Eimerra one more squeeze before allowing her to lead them where she wished to stand. He had never been on this side of the congratulatory process, and so it seemed logical to have Eimerra take charge. Imyth’s announcement made him grin, albeit briefly, as he waited for the first of the weyrfolk to enter, having no doubt that the brown-sired clutch would be a curiosity at the very least.

These days were full of turmoil for the young candidate. Once so sure about the path she’d taken, Droissa was forever a mess of anxiety and indecision. She had real fear at the thought of facing another of Kalestath’s clutches. She remembered, too, the pain that had been Imyth’s last hatching- even if it was more of a mental torture than anything. Dro had always figured that, as backup, she could consider the fishercraft. That was hardly an option anymore.

When word came that Imyth was finished laying Droissa made up her mind. She knew X’kis.. Sort of. He was kind and helpful and his dragon was equally just. Eimerra and Imyth, too, seemed to be of a different variety than most of the ranked dragonriders. It hadn’t really been their fault that their last hatching had been so foul, she told herself. Chances of another disaster happening so soon before the clutch was due seemed unlikely. This was what she told herself. This is what made her decide to attend the gathering, to offer her congratulations, and to firmly cement her position as a candidate. Besides, Kalestath hadn’t risen yet and wouldn’t for some time, there was always a chance that she wouldn’t be caught by Neisoth.

She turned away from the direction she’d been walking- lunch would be skipped today. An inquiring chirp from her shoulder did make her pause, however. Dro knew firelizards weren’t explicitly banned but Wander hadn’t ever been on the sands before and she wasn’t sure how he might act. The Bronze shoved his angular head into the crook of her neck, blowing hot air against her skin in a sort of exasperated sigh. “I know,” she told him, “I just worry.”

That settled, she began to walk again.

The hatching sands always brought a tremendous feeling of awe and unease. Today was no different, although Wander’s presence did seem to ease some of her tension. Eimerra and X’kis were easy to find and she approached them with just a touch of apprehension. A curtsey followed, somewhat wobbling, and Wander had tighten his grip to the pad of leather she’d attached to her shoulder for his perch. “Junior weyrwoman, Weyrsecond, congratulations.” Formalities always felt awkward to her, she added in, “Wander is as good as they come, thanks to you Sir,” she nodded to X’kis, “but if distresses Imyth we can leave.”

Ysveta was finally back at the candidate barracks. Whilst she had been discharged from the hall a sevenday ago, it was only under the condition that she would take it easy, return every sevenday for a checkup, and continue with her physical therapy regime.

Currently, it was streches morning and night and a backbrace while she was sleeping. She hadn't had an easy recovery so far. As far as she had been told, the healers had been expecting to let her out of the healer hall almost a month earlier, instead, they had discovered some deep seated infection or something. Ysveta had gotten lost with most of the healer jargon, her speciality was music, she was smart, but knew near to nothing about healing. All she knew really, was that it hadn't gone well, and they were being even more careful now to prevent more permanent injury.

As for now, Ysveta had trouble walking by herself, each move caused the muscles in her back to spasm, and the badly healed stitching to stretch. But the healers had told her to not be too hesitant about walking. Back injuries needed to heal with movement, in order to stretch the wound and minimise and future stress if it heal too tight.

At least, that was as far as her limited knowledge allowed her to understand. For now, she was just following their rules.

When Imyth had called to the Weyr to welcome her clutch into the world, Ysveta had already begun her slow walk from candidate barracks to dining hall. So she simply continued, not stopping at her original destination, instead walking, steadily across the bowl to the hatching sands.

This clutch seemed much more managable, and she couldn't anticipate that Imyth's hatching would bring the same confusion and devastation that Kalestath's had. But then, perhaps it was just wishful thinking. Hatchings weren't always these incredible events of awe and happiness. Even before the Reds or Blacks had appeared, candidates had been injured on the regular. Dragonets were clumsy, it was a simply fact of life, and candidates were always bound to get in the way.

When Droissa had made her congratulations, she waited for the Weyrseconds response before she approached the pair. "Weyrsecond, Junior Weyrwoman, my congratulations." Ysveta had little more to say after that, and her back was beginning to ache a little more fiercely. Besides, she didn't want to be holding up the rest of their congratulations from the Weyr's admirers.  So she nodded respectfully and departed, slowly making her way to the stands and sitting on the first tier, enough so that she could admire the clutch.

Has a scar from jaw to hairline across her left cheek, obtained in Kalestath's hatching of 2590.

While Halirina would easily say that Kalestath’s clutches were one of her more stressful times, for obvious reasons, second then was when two Golds occupied the hatching sands. The weyr wasn’t big enough, she often felt, for the amount of Golds they presently had. Let alone the tensions between the Holders and weyrfolk.

When Kalestath informed Halirina, who was in her office, that Imyth moved to clutch and that she would attend, Halirina mentally cursed. She’d known it was going to happen and she could hardly fault the Gold for the time of it, Halirina was just never ready for when it did happen. Kalestath’s was always easier to time because they were bonded. Being caught off guard never did sit well with her.

Thankfully, most Golds could be reasonable. Usually. When eggs were involved, not so much. With the mess Eimerra had been involved in before, Halirina was less sure. Kalestath had already had to intervene once, she did not want to have the Golds fight in the weyr a second time.

That had been an extreme situation, her Gold remarked, stoic and calm as she claimed a place in the weyrbowl. Near the hatching sands to insert herself between the Golds if she had to physically. More to lend her support mentally as they presided over their respective clutches while still granting them space. It was only necessity that demanded they all remain so close to begin with.

What were they going to do when Minath finally rose?

Halirina finally made her way, alongside S’bok, to the hatching sands shortly after the clutching had finished. A thin smile worked its way on her face as she gave a nod of acknowledgement to both Eimerra and X’kis, though she did offer a small bow to Imyth. “Congratulations.”

C'ren was thinkung of test as nd things for his group of weyrlings when Amsmith spoke to him. More eggs on the sands. Means more weyrlings.

C'ren laughted Not our group smithy. We get the next lot. Hope they will be less trouble than this one. he ment Hiakimth and Nalise but there where others.

He waljed to the sands and bowed to the queens and then looked at Eimerra "Beautiful clutch your gold has laid. She looks all the proud mom as well. They both look poud parents." He said this to both weyrwoman and her mate as their dragons did look like proud parents. He had also waited till the sr. Weyrwoman was done.

We have a new clutch on the sands, Adakhanyth observed, stretching himself out indulgently on the rim. It had been a good morning hunting and the bronze felt that he was due a well earned snooze in the sun while his rider cleaned up and had lunch, but he could not simply ignore an announcement such as the queen had just made.

Then I believe a congratulations is in order, J'thir replied cooly, eyes not leaving the straps he was inspecting before he put them back on their hook. Safety first. Will you be coming?

The bronze snorted. Not with two queens on the sands. I'll keep my distance, thanks. It was easy for the dragon to say that. He could just reach out to Imyth mind to mind and say whatever he wanted. J'thir actually had to go to avoid seeming rude. Not that it was expected of every wingrider to all pile onto the Sands at once post-clutching, nor even every bronzerider, but as one of Eimerra's previous Weyrseconds, he felt he at least should attend. Even if that had been turns ago. Besides, any opportunity to size up the brownrider was a good one.

He allowed the goldpair plenty of time to set themselves straight before he made a move. He had gear to put away, after all. When he arrived on the sands, a small crowd had gathered already, including the senior Weyrleader pair. He made sure to allow Halirina and S'bok time to say their bit, before giving the pair a curt nod and stepping up beside C'ren, paying no mind to the various candidates gathering around gawking.

"Junior Weyrwoman Eimerra," he greeted her cheerfully but respectfully, as always, regardless of how she'd disgraced herself some months ago. "Congratulations on another successful clutch. And to you, Weyrsecond, on your first," he added, turning toward the brownrider and offering him a smile that in no way reached his eyes. ... and hopefully your last, he finished to himself. "The clutch is a credit to you both."

Blending in had thus far been a simple task, even if it meant her blood pressure was through the roof. Her breath still caught every time a dragon flew low overhead, or took off, but she’d managed to keep a relatively straight if slightly pale face. The rest of it - Candidacy - seemed relatively easy. She’d even admit to enjoying the more physical aspects of it, as it had been too long since she’d been allowed to train as such. More surprising, it was mostly devoid of contact with actual dragons. So much the better.

Jedee’s strategy was simple: keep her head down and follow what her classmates were doing. Simple, easy to remember. So when her fellow Candidates rose from the lunch table and filed out in the direction of the weyrbowl, she didn’t question it. Much.

There were more weyrfolk around than usual, especially given the hour of day. Especially filing away from the dining hall, not toward it. Lunch was sacred, one ideology that Jedee could agree with. It didn’t properly click until she heard the word ‘clutch’.

Jedee had only see the golds at a distance thus far, and that was plenty close enough. Greens terrified her with their size. Golds were incomprehensible. She looked back in the direction she’d come, but with much of her Candidate group there - or presumably coming from elsewhere - there was no way to subtly excuse herself. Head down, follow her classmates.

The mouth of the hatching sands was right near the edge of the bay, which was what Jedee instead focused on while they made their way closer. The water looked so inviting, azure blue and dancing, but it was full of snakes. Apt. Rounding the corner, she quickly saw there were not one, but two golds occupying the sands, a space clearly more suited to one giantess at a time. She paused for half a step, and her heel got trot on before she kept moving again. She may not know much about dragons, but if whers were anything to go by, approaching her eggs was tantamount to lunacy.

The queen that everyone was approaching was paler and smaller than the other who sat, quietly glaring from her side of the sands. Small comforts. A big brown hung in the background as well, probably the gold’s mate, but compared to the queens he faded into the background and Jedee could ignore him. A small crowd was gathering around the gold’s rider and her mate, and fortunately none were actually walking over to the eggs. Still, it was too close for Jedee, and she spotted some other candidates occupying seats adjacent, but importantly a further distance from, the dragons’ nests. Hoping her absence would not be missed, she hovered for a few seconds before moving towards them to take a seat beside one of the other Candidates. She barely nodded at the girl, incapable of anything more intelligible. Only then did she fixate on the eggs, enormous things they were too, being shielded by the bulk of the queen.

Imyth clutches, mine!

S’kelyn paused mid-bite, the spoon clinking between is teeth. // Yes, I know, mine. You keep saying. //

They are laid! Come! The blue’s voice was high and triumphant, laced with anticipation and impatience. S’kelyn smiled - it would be hard to say who was more excited for a clutch, an eager Candidate or the broody blue. Others were beginning to abandon their meals around him, moving toward the weyrbowl. He took a few quick mouthfuls more before joining them.

// I come, mine. //

The second he stepped out into the weyrbowl the blue descended. S’kelyn smiled through the whoosh of air as the blue landed, ruffling his wings and nearly jogging on the spot in impatience. Blue he may be, he was far too large for such behaviour to be safe for those walking on the ground, and S’kelyn put a steadying hand on his leg.

// Easy now, they are not your clutch. Is it wise to come so soon? //

Quaith whined, high and hurt, though he knew S’kelyn was not being malicious, only true. I will be careful.

// Can’t say I didn’t warn you, // sent the blue affectionately, unable to deny his dragon any joy he might get from the experience. If there were ever such a need, he imagined the blue would sit on a clutch himself if he could.

I’d do no such thing.

The dragon and rider kept to the outskirts of the small gathering already making their way to the sands, mostly out of courtesy for not knocking any of the less aware Candidates off their feet. Quaith’s steps were still quick and jittery, and he kept craning his neck for a first glimpse of Imyth’s brood.

The soft croon indicated he’d managed it. Despite his clear desire for a closer look, he remained well outside the lip of the sands, keeping a respectful distance. Blues had no real business on the sands.

Well done! Well done! They will grow to be beautiful and strong for the weyr! The blue’s thoughts went out to both Imyth and Maelboroth, as well as their riders, so not to cause a scene by being improper. He knew his place in the order of things, no matter how much distress it might bring him. He then sent his congratulations and greetings to Oriath as well - it may not be her day, and he may have already expressed as much multiple times, it was simply polite.

Quaith lay on the warm beach sands instead to wait, his tail still swishing back and forth. S’kelyn gave the blue a consolidatory pat again before joining the masses around the queen and her rider. Already, the heirachy was establishing itself - the Senior Weyrwoman and Weyrleader were there, as were a number of bronzers and the old guard. S’kelyn kept a respectful distance, waiting for them to offer their congratulations and participate in politics. He peered over heads to count the eggs, twelve in total. Not a large clutch by any means, but not out of the ordinary for a Junior queen. The clutch was exactly what the weyr needed really, an injection of good, reliable dragons and riders. There’d be no golds, or bronzes, or mutations among them, and while S’kelyn had nothing against them, all brought a certain kind of distracting politics that could detract from the Weyr.

“Junior Weyrwoman, Weyrsecond,” he said with a wide smile, coming to stand before the pair. “You do the weyr proud.”

He nodded first to Eimerra, then X’kis. “Imyth looks resplendent, motherhood suits her. Congratulations too, to you and Maelboroth, on your first. May you have many more.” Though he was a blue rider, S'keyln still felt a certain comradeship to the brown riders - steadfast and reliable, they were often forgotten behind the bluster and flash of the bronzers. It was good to see that represented within the weyr leadership.

Fully aware of the growing crowd behind him, S’kelyn stepped aside with another full-bodied smile, taking up a position some distance from the weyr leadership, near the bleachers, not wanting to impose upon their space. He watched the Candidates, looking at their expressions as they looked at the queen with her clutch. So young, and full of hope and excitement. It was a joy to see the weyr like this again. They needed more days like this.

News of Imyths clutching spread quickly. Roxalin had learned Turns ago that living among dragons and their riders meant news traveled fast. They were as bad gossips as Harper's that bunch! At least this bit of news was good, and much needed after dwindling catches and the strange new sharpfish that's been found. Bloody grim times ahead. But just about everyone could cheer at news of a new clutch right?

Setting aside her work the brunette had made her way to the sands. She's seen other clutchings of course but now that the young woman was a candidate it all felt more...urgent. silly since waiting a few days to see the eggs wouldn't change a soggy thing but Roxalin went anyway. The plan to take a quick peek at the eggs and get back to her work for the day.

Coming up to the sands she could easily spot the gold dragons and their eggs. Imyth accompanied by her brown mate and the newest clutch. A proud picture. With the news already circulating  and people no doubt eager for some happy moments folks were already milling about to chatter. Or go congratulate the queen rider and her weyrmate.

As for Roxalin the pale eyed woman had found herself momentarily frozen on the edge of the sands. A realization tumbling through her brain. One she’d done her best until recently to ignore. Being a candidate, going through the motions, keeping busy, keeping Gran happy…. Ultimately none of it mattered. Her fate was in the hands of...eggs! Possibly these new additions or Imyth s next clutch or a different queen all together. Or none.

Dragon eggs were always a lovely encouraging sight. Though as the full weight of candidacy hit her Roxa found herself eyeing this new clutch a bit…. warily. What did the future hold?

Ty had been to Oriath's clutching as well. He knew the drill. Sunset had deemed to stay with Ty today, as always, he was nervous. The reddish gold settled onto the tall candidate's shoulder as he readied himself to see more eggs. Another chance at being a rider. Maybe if he became a rider soon, he'd be able to have his daughter with him again, though he knew that was rather frowned upon. Raising your own child? Blasphemy.

Ty made his way to the sands and paused taking in the sights. The two stunning golds with their clutches and the stunning layout of eggs. The new ones just as pretty. He caught sight of another candidate. One he'd played a prank on before. He stopped beside her, his gold trilling at her curiously.

"It's a sight isn't it?"

His healers hands were resting at his side, seemingly to be relaxed. Ty wasn't one to let the world know what he felt. He liked to project the joker, playful, flirty man, who was competent in his job. He never wanted people to know how terrified of chance he really was. Or how much he hated being away from his daughter. To her he did his damnedest to act as if nothing was really different.

"This your first clutch?"

Lokin was surprised at how quickly the second queen clutched. Stepping into the sands, with out her faire was a bit daunting, but she wasn't about to let her friends get hurt. Not after the hatching. The slim blonde girl bowed to the queen and her rider before moving off to stare at the dragons, her gaze curious. She wondered if her dragon was there. Would there even be a dragon for her? She'd kept to herself mostly over the last few months, joining in classes, and in general, keeping to herself.

It felt better to do so. For now, it wasn't important being out in front, being the noticeable one. One day maybe, but not today. She drifted to the edge of the sands, staring at both stunning dragons and their clutches.

Desh moved with practiced step to the sands. He'd been here enough times to know the way half asleep. Not that he'd needed to be. He'd been at lunch when the call went out. Starling was on his shoulder as he made his way to the sands, giving the Junior Weyrwoman, her Weyrsecond and their dragons deep bows before making his way a little further away. Desh had become much quieter over the last month. He wasn't keeping to himself, but this time, he felt a bit... lonely really.

He missed his friend, and while he still had a few, he wasn't one to really spend to much time dwelling. Or so he thought. Still. Desh stood quietly marveling at the eggs again. He loved being here. Someday he hoped his dragon would be the one fathering those eggs, but that was a deep, quiet dream. Even with the Black's upsetting everything, Desh was well aware his tastes leaned towards a mixture of men and women. His pride demanded something better than he probably would get.

His gaze fell on the other dragon's eggs, and he was quick to bow to her as well, giving her the reverence that she deserved. Both queens were stunning, and both deserved attendance.

Her first clutch! Sayel was excited as she made her way to the sands. After meeting with J'hal (who she found was a black rider), she'd put her head and heart into becoming a rider herself. Maybe they'd never get along, but something in her drove her to be better. She had her son in hand as she brought him from lunch, but sent him off to the side just to watch. The little boy was just pleased to see the dragons around him, and stayed quiet. Sayel bowed quickly to the queen and her rider.

"A beautiful clutch, Weyrwoman, Weyrsecond."

With that she drifted away, eyes on both clutches. Was her dragon there? Would she find her life-partner here? Or would it be years down the line? Sayel wasn't sure. After all, life had never gone the way she'd wanted. She didn't fully let her excitement show as she came to a stop near the back of the small crowed gathering. Today was not really any different from any other day was it? Wrapped around her throat was Shadow, watching with glittering yellow and green eyes, curious, worried, and possessive. Since meeting J'hal, Shadow has barely left her bonded's side, feeling the need to protect the young woman.

Isalia walked to the sands Lazy was in her barracks and Lil on her shoulder hiding in her hair. Lil liked to hide in the young girls hair as she likes it. Isa walks in and looks at the eggs they are beautiful and she smiles as she looks at them. Looking to the Werywoman and Werysecond she bows to them both as well as the dragons.

"Lovely clutch Weyrwoman and Weyrsecond. I think they are all beautiful."

She looks to the other Weyrwoman and smiles nodding to her as she does. She then walks to the other candidates and smiles to them though she stands over to the side watching the eggs.

The lovely little warble pulled Roxalin’s attention from the eggs. And from the rather serious thoughts they inspired. She turned first to see the pretty little gold and then glanced further up to see her master. The mischievous fellow candidate she’d met in the dining hall! Not terribly surprising to see another candidate on the sands. Still Ty’s question was met with a rather studious look, as if Roxa wasnt entirely sue he wasnt teasing her. Then after a moment she nodded. Turning those pale eyes back to the main attraction.

“They’re pretty. Chicken eggs aren't so pretty” the woman mused aloud. It was a bit like-well comparing dragons to chickens! But that an egg might be so lovely and so very important… it was a hard thing to seriously wrap her mind around. Not to mention Roxalin had never been closer to a clutch than this. The edge of the sands. That invisible line. But someday she’d be closer. Much closer! For a touching maybe and a hatching certainly. It was exciting and nerve wracking all at once! Powerless to alter or speed up or control in any way...it was also a touch frustrating!

Pressing her lips together the former fisher crafter made a soft ‘mmmhmmm’ noise. Glancing back up at Tythinaden. If he seemed frustrated with the ‘hurry up and wait’ nature of candidacy he wasnt showing it. “My first as a candidate anyway. What about you?”

Ysveta sat straight in her position on the stands, not wanting to put any undue strain on her back with bored slouching. Besides, the position was a good one for people watching. Not an activity in which she usually engaged, but one that would suit for now.

She was surprised when the woman sat beside her, and nodded back at the shaky greeting she had been given. Does she... want me to talk to her? Should I say anything? Ysveta knew she wasn't the best at the whole "human interaction" thing, so she decided to stay quiet for now, the girl's demeanour having confused her.

It was a sight to be sure. All three mature Golds of the Weyr in the same small area. Kalestath just outside should be need to intervene, Oriath occupying her half and Imyth newly adjusting to her own. Their differences were something that Ysveta quite enjoyed, and she supposed she hadn't really... thought about it before. Sure, they were all Golds, but their differences were striking. Kalestath, despite her age, the brightest of them all, Oriath, the deeper burnished Gold with the speckle texture across her wings, and Imyth the ghostly pale, but beautiful in her own right.

Dragons were amazing creatures.

Ysveta turned her attention back to the eggs now, counting them up as she did so. 12 eggs... Didn't Imyth's last clutch only have 13? And she was caught by a brown this time. Ysveta didn't know much about dragon anatomy, but she was sure she was supposed to be impressed by that result. Shards, she was impressed that the brown had caught her in the first place, although looking at them side by side, Imyth, small as she was, didn't dwarf the brown as much as she was expecting.

Has a scar from jaw to hairline across her left cheek, obtained in Kalestath's hatching of 2590.

X'kis was rather pleased to see Droissa approach giving her an encouraging smile as her curtsey was followed by congratulations. "Thank you, Droissa." he said gently, nodding as she continued. "Wander will be fine. Imyth's even managed to tolerate Flirt for all her idiocy. He lowered his voice at this, before turning to Eimerra, not letting Droissa leave just yet.

"Droissa has very kindly let me help with teaching Wander some basic commands," He explained to his mate, "I can guarantee both Imyth and Maelboroth would not be disappointed to have one of these hatchlings impress to her." It wasn't a promise of impression as such, but a compliment to the girl's work ethic and determination shown during their sessions. He smiled once more, reassuringly, adding "Take a look, over there gives you a wonderful view of all twelve, without needing to be too close." He pointed when he spoke, to a section as of yet unoccupied by the steady stream of people starting to enter the sands, waiting for Droissa as to make her leave before giving his attention to the next girl to speak.

He recognised her as well, surprisingly. One of the more badly injured candidates from Kalestath's hatching. He nodded in response, a movement he would no doubt repeat time and time again that afternoon. "Thank you, Ysveta." She left about as quietly as she had arrived, and X'kis felt no need to call her back or engage her in conversation, waiting only for Eimerra to say what she wished and smiling as he watched her move away.

Halirina's words were met with a short, but respectful bow to herself and S'bok. "I am not ashamed to admit that the size exceeded my expectations." It was an honest statement. He had expected perhaps half the dozen that sat there, and while he had faith in Maelboroth's capabilities as a sire, was surprised that there were no obvious signs of a dud among the eggs. "Please offer Kalestath my gratitude for her presence here, too. It certainly reduces... Tensions." He would have added more had C'ren, shortly followed by J'thir approached, waiting patiently for the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader to say their piece before offering their own.

"Thank you C'ren, J'thir. Imyth has done wonderfully. Maelboroth and I couldn't be prouder." He said with the same respectful tone he had used thus far, not noticing the slight  iciness that someone perhaps more suspicious of others may have to J'thir's words.

Maelboroth crooned loudly in response to the dark blue's appearance towards the edge of the sands a warm greeting before nuzzling once more at his mate in affirmation to his congratulations. They will be fine hatchlings indeed, he answered warmly, opening his words to X'kis, Eimerra, Imyth and Sk'elyn in the same way as Quaith had for politeness sake.

To the blue riders words, he couldn't help but chuckle, shaking his head to rebuff the statement, as well meaning as it must have been. "Maelboroth would argue with me, however I do not see this happening a second time. One turn as weyrsecond is eye opening enough, I would be surprised if we managed to catch Imyth a second time." There  was no resentment to his words, no irritation that he would lose his position by the time Imyth flew next. He had taken a lot of pride in his position, and would never regret his time as weyrsecond, but he would not begrudge the bronze rider who would take his place in the new turn.

A few more candidates approached to offer their congratulations, and while he did not know names, X'kis offered a small "thank you" to each one, Keeping an ear out for Eimerra in case she needed him to join her in her own conversations. Any lull in the small, but seemingly constant tide was met with a reaffirmation of Maelboroth's pride as he and the brown looked over the crowd to see just who was admiring their clutch.

The news of another clutch on the sands traveled quickly. Thiis, who seemed perpetually assigned to the kitchen for her morning chores (which she did thank O'sir for), heard it faster than most as the riders who had gathered for their mid-day meal started spreading the buzz around the cavern. She looked to the headwoman for permission to go pay her respects, running off to the sands.

She paused outside the entrance, memories washing over her of the other hatchings she had stood for here. None of them had been good memories so far. These sands had seen far too much blood and death for what was supposed to be a happy occasion. Still, this was life in the weyr. Thiis was learning that more and more as she went through her days. Hunter attacks, beach snakes, the violence of the new dragon colors...things had changed since Thread stopped falling.

She joined the others around the junior weyrwoman and the weyrsecond, offering her congratulations with a small voice before retreating to look at the eggs. She bowed in the direction of Imyth before actually taking the time to study the clutch the pale queen had placed on the sands.

Twelve eggs, varying in size, color, and most likely texture, standard just like any other clutch. The presence of other eggs at the far end of the sands, with Oriath, didn't escape her, but this time wasn't for that queen. Thiis looked at the eggs, seeing a few brightly colored ones that stood out against the browns and yellows of the sands. She nodded to herself. Things had to be looking up. There were only so many hatchings that could end in disaster.

The morning's training session had left both Minath and Nalata a little worse for wear, though neither would admit as such. A break couldn't have been better timed, and tired as she was from the increasing physical demands that the Assistant Weyrlingmaster continued to push on rider and dragon alike, Nalata moved quickly back to her room to give Minath the attention she deserved.

Imyth's announcement did not go unnoticed, and while Nalata did not dawdle, she did not try to rush the task at hand. There was time to go and offer her congratulations but leaving Minath in her harness and decorated by a layer of muck would be negligent, and unbecoming of the youngest goldrider.

So Nalata took her time removing Minath's gear and giving her hide a quick clean. She would need a decent oiling once the formalities had been sorted, and lunch would probably be skipped to ensure there was enough time to do so, but it didn't phase the weyrling in the slightest.

Ensure you, too are presentable, Nalatamine. the gold said gently, the affectionate taint to her voice taking the steel out of the words. Had the golden dragon said the same to anyone else there would have been no lightness to her voice. For Nalata, it was as much to ensure she was comfortable approaching her superiors as it was a demand that she be presentable in the official capacity for which they would one day fulfil.

Of course, Minath. Nalata reassured her partner as she retrueved a simple dress from her clothes. The other junior weyrwomen would be present, which was reason enough to be presentable, but as was the case whenever Imyth moved to the sands, Kalestath, and the Senior Weyrwoman herself would be hovering nearby. She needed to show that her lessons with the harpers were paying off, and a formal situation presented the perfect opportunity to do so.

So long as she didn't attract negative attention, things would be fine.

With one final sweep of Minath's hide and a reaffirmation that she was ready, Nalata stepped out of her room and moved across the bowl towards the hatching sands, a hand resting against Minath's hide as she moved beside her and a smile ready for anyone who cared to look her way.

They separated soon enough, Minath sitting on her haunches and watching regally as Nalata disappeared through the entrance to the hatching sands. Only the slightest tint of agitation to her eyes as she took note the other golds in close proximity. It wasn't meant as a threatening response, more a cautious one. She was too young still to see the older queens as a threat, but she understood at least that it was beside them that she would soon stand. An understanding that made her more concious of her need to act in a way appropriate to her position in the weyr.

She did at least offer a polite greeting to Kalrlestath, Oriath and Imyth so as not to cause offense, and while she lavished what attention she received from passers-by, had enough intelligence to keep herself well out of the way should her precense cause the clutching golds or Kalestath herself to become agitated. It was tense enough having the two golds on the sands without aggravating the other queens.

Nalata for her part walked towards where Eimerra and X'kis stood with as much poise as possible considering the heat underfoot and the ache to her muscles. She showed none of the tensiom her bonded held and gave Imyth a long, respectful bow before offering her congratulations.

"Another succesfull clutch, Junior Weyrwoman, Weyrsecond. Nice and healthy, so far as I can tell" She offered, waiting for any further interaction before stepping put of the way to allow those who had entered sfter her to share a quick word.

Formalities done, and a polite nod of greeting offered to the other ranked riders who had arrived before her, including Halirina and S'bok themselves, she moved aside so as to get a better glimpse at the eggs Imyth had lain.

While it hadn't been something she had considered prior to Imyth's flight, there was always the chance that, like the mutations, a brown catching a queen was not the coincidence it appeared to be, and she found herself wondering if any of the brown weyrlings in her class group may also be capable of such a feat when Minath rises for the first time. It was an odd thought, to be honest, and one that she brushed aside to consider at a later point, though the curiosity remained.

Minath is 40m long; 9m tall; 67m wingspan.

The news that Imyth was laying her clutch was a happy occasion, and M’rek was more than content to miss the first part of lunch in order to congratulate Eimerra and X’kis. Imyth might always lay smaller clutches than either Kalestath or Oriath did, but there was nothing, strictly speaking, wrong with that. She was a smaller dragon, to begin with, than either of the more senior Queens, and he didn’t think the Weyr would be able to sustain clutches the size of Kalestath’s throughout the turn.

That her clutch was no smaller than normal was certainly a testament to Maelboroth. And despite Polanth’s faint grumpiness that a Brown had caught a Queen rather than a proper Bronze like him, M’rek wasn’t about to let his dragon’s prejudices sour his good mood.

So the Bronzer’s gait was buoyant as he entered the Hatching Sands, sparing brief but respectful smiles for Nalata, C’ren, Halirina, S’bok—all variously ranked riders passing on their congratulations just as he intended to. Nevertheless, his grin was a little less than strictly proper as he addressed Eimerra and X’kis. “A lovely clutch, as always. Congratulations.” Despite the disaster that Imyth’s hatching had been at the very beginning of the turn, M’rek had to believe that this one would be better. Not everything they did could end in disaster.

Though he remained outside with the other dragons that had peered curiously into the Hatching Sands, Polanth likewise projected a message to the two parents in question. Congratulations.

Generally, clutches passed by Daysa with little or no note. Sure, it was a happy occasion for the weyr and she felt, in a detached sense, some excitement. But it’d never really impacted her. She wasn’t a rider, a candidate, nor did she really know any. Colvin, yes, but that was still more of his world and not… not really hers.

With things progressing more or less with M’kale, though, when the dragons started to hum she actually felt… like maybe, it wouldn’t be so terrible… if she went? He was going to go anyways, right? So would it be to much to ask, would it be encroaching?

It took a lot of effort for her to invariably saunter up to M’kale just as he was arriving for lunch.  She wanted to catch him before he left, before something else… happened. Daysa was learning that it was ok to come up to him, that he wasn’t about to be upset with her if she bothered him at his Wing table – though she certainly didn’t make a habit of it.

Frankly, all the Jungle riders intimidated her.

But now, with so many filing out to pay their respects to the clutch, she caught his arm and peered up at M’ale. It took her a moment to find the words, chewing on her lower lip, before Daysa murmured softly, “Can… I come see the eggs with you?”

Generally, clutches passed by M’kale with little or no note. The production of eggs and their hatching were all a regular part of Weyr life and had lost their wonder after seeing everything for the first time when he Impressed Hakurath. He couldn’t understand everyone going to ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at the eggs each time there was a new clutch, as if they’d never seen dragon eggs before. Or why they would congratulate the weyrwoman. That was their main role at the Weyr—to lay eggs—so why were they getting special attention for it? That would be like him asking for a pat on the back for going out hunting and bringing in some wherry. It was a waste of time.

As the hum of dragons resounded through the Weyr, M’kale kept walking. There was nothing in his appearance to show he’d even heard the sound, let alone understood what it meant. Some riders who had already been at lunch—Prairie, no doubt—were already exiting the Weyr Hall like some overexcited weyrlings.

The bronze rider smoothly glided by the others as they headed in the opposite direction. His eyes were focused forward with steel intensity. There was nothing and no one that was going to stop him from eating his lunch. It was an added bonus that it would be relatively quiet during this meal time. He turned toward the food line when something pulled at his arm and he nearly dragged it along with him. M’kale planted his feet and twisted his torso to look behind him. His gaze easily shifted from a glare to one of hunger when he realized it was his Daysepona there.

His eyes were locked on her abused lip that he almost didn’t hear what she said—though that could also be due to how quiet she tended to be when speaking. M’kale slid his hand to her lower back and firmly pulled her against him. “Daysepona,” he breathed in greeting before using his mouth to demand a more physical greeting. The kiss was hard and fast and then he released her without warning. He continued where he had left off walking toward the food line, his hand pressed against her back and keeping her with him. “Have you eaten?”

She was hardly expecting praise in such a public setting and the pink tinge to her cheeks reflected that. Wander seemed unaffected but was perhaps holding himself a little taller. The Bronze was nearly his full size and he was quite aware of his weight and position on his bonded’s shoulder at all times, as a result. He didn’t want to overdo it, but X’kis’s praise meant quite a bit to him, too.

Droissa happily turned to where the weyrsecond pointed. The eggs were, indeed, a splendid sight and a good distraction. Feeling he was offering her leave, Dro gave both Eimerra and X’kis one more curtsey before she scurried off with all of the dignity she could manage, squeaking a “Thanks!” on her way out.

This clutching seemed crowded. Whether it was the presence of two queens on the sand or that the Brown weyrsecond was getting a bit more attention, everywhere she turned seemed to be filled with riders or candidates, and everything in between. It was hard to pick out those she knew and actually wanted to be around.

Her indecision was unsettling in itself. She made a quick decision so she wouldn’t continue to dither, moving through mingling groups and then off to a comfortable wall. Between gaps in the crowd she could still see the eggs, and that was good enough.

So many people pushed past Daysa without so much as a second glance. And why wouldn’t they? She was kitchen staff. No one of consequence. She was used to it. So it never ceased to amaze her when M’kale was different. How he parted a crowd, how people moved around him and not the other way around, but he would stop for her. Even if he had to take a moment to realize, he still did.

She felt her entire body heat up when she was bodily pulled to him, effortless and easy. Not that she’d have resisted anyways. Like a moth to a glow, she wanted him. Always. Especially when he said her name in such a way – like the rest of the weyr might not even exist. How did he still do that?

Was this what love really was?

The kiss stole her breath in hummed submission, though just as quickly she was released. Then he was pulling away, toward the food line. Maybe he… hadn’t heard? Not that it was stopping M’kale from prodding her along, toward the line as well. “I… I ate before prep,” she answered dutifully. Then, glancing in the direction where everyone else was headed, or rather the direction so many others were, she reiterated, “Are you not going to see the eggs?”
