Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Endgame [ 17.09.2590 / 9pm ] Wher Run Event
« on: September 21, 2017, 12:39:18 AM »
Daresik had felt the tingle in the back of his mind the entire day, Darsk was usually a constant and floating warmth, but today her misty presence was characterised but occasional sharp spurts of need. It was a little frustrating, especially for someone with as short an attention span as Daresik, and so, he really was looking forward to leaving his Peacekeeper duties and pouncing on his wife.

Stupidly, although that is obviously a quite accurate word to describe Daresik, the fact that Darsk was acting like this because her run was imminent was not at the forefront of his mind. Everalsie had organised the posting more than two days ago, and that was far too long ago for Daresik to really make the connection to.

Instead all he was thinking about was following his patrol route, and getting back to Everalsie for the evening.

Darsk on the otherhand, was getting impatient, but she knew she must wait. Daresik had never been the most attentive handler, but she didn’t mind much. As soon as he was heading back to his home, she’d be off towards the run cavern. She slunk by his side throughout his patrol, muscles tense, but avoiding snapping at all those that passed them through sheer power of will. Even her usual pleasure at the ever-changing scenery of patrols was not enough to counteract her anticipation.

When he was finally dismissed from his patrol, Darsk didn’t look back as she left him in the dust, trotting off in the direction of the run cavern. Whether he followed her or not, she didn’t care one bit, she was going to run.

When his usually quite obedient wher just took off by herself, Daresik did eventually catch on, and when he assured himself that she was indeed heading down the correct tunnel from the dining hall to the run cavern, he left her to her business, instead heading towards the direction of his families cave, the notice had been posted, Darsk was on her way, and therefore Daresik’s hands were clean.

She stalked into the cavern, and roared her challenge, facing the main entrance in a stand off for those who were to arrive.

Everalsie always knew, roughly, when her husband’s wher was to run. That didn’t mean that it was always at the forefront of her mind. If anything, it was Evesk that let her know. Nosing at Everalie’s hand in the morning before her Dare wandered off to his Keeper thing, she noted the tell outline of purple. Which only meant that the Gold would run in a three days. She mentally added posting his run to the list of things she needed to do, then went on with her day.

The day of was a little different. Rather, she got all her children ready for their Harper lessons but also got together with another of the Holder women she knew, a friend of hers, so that her children could spend the night there with Peep. The little Blue flit would make sure they behaved when their mother wasn't around and keep little Ealsyvie warm. Everalsie didn’t really trust Dare to be discreet on the night his wher ran. Besides, her youngest Dalerik thought it was some fun, adventurous sleepover.

With her children taken care of for the day, that gave Everalsie the entire afternoon to clean up around their cave. Shake out furs, sweep up dirt that always seemed present, and prep for the arrival of her Dare. When it was really time, Evesk rumbled at her, nudged at Everalie’s thigh with his snout, then trotted out of their cavern. Off to chase after the Gold wher that so frequently wanted nothing to do with him.

Almost on cue, her husband arrived moments later. With a coy smile, Everalie tugged him toward their bed. No reason they had to wait.

Evesk trotted along, not a care in the world, to the wher run cave. It might have been odd seeing a wher unescorted, unmuzzled, but he was a passive, happy creature who had been doing this for every run that Darsk had. On approach, he did slow though. Head lowered, eyes shifting to a darker maroon – bordering purple. The Bronze wasn’t about to challenge the bigger Gold, after all, but he was certainly ready. Well behaved, Evesk waited. A tense mass of muscle with his attention intent on the Gold he’d known his whole life.

Kenna was sitting on the edge of her bed, working on some of her leather mining equipment, oiling out any cracks that had started to form while she laughed with some of the other mining apprentices. She had always found the atmosphere of the mine hall to be a good one. When you wanted time to yourself, no one really seemed to get offended, but there were always others around with which to have a drink, a chat, or a laugh with.

Right now, they were regaling each other with tales of some of the more amusing mistakes made by their seniors. It was innocent enough, just memories of a slip of the tongue, or a trip up some stairs, but not anything too offensive or reputation damaging. Just a way to let off some steam about some of the superiors in their craft.

Kenna had only vaguely known that a Queen run was about to occur, but with the excitement of her day, it wasn't in the forefront of her mind at the moment. With Kensk being nearby, she noticed his quick stand to his feet, as the bronze started towards the door, pushing into her mind feelings of urgency, lust and the image of a bright and sparkling Gold wher.

"Sorry mates. Kensk has a lady to attend to, move your party to your own rooms." She winked at one of her... closer friends in the craft, an invitation if anything for him to wait for her back here when she returned. He made a noncommittal face as she headed towards the door and she shrugged. If she really cared, Kenna was sure she could find someone else along the way.

In the grand scheme of things, Kensk was a young wher, and had only started chasing Golds this turn, so Kenna thought it was best to walk with him to the run cavern at least, maybe there should could find someone to sneak away with. It wasn't necessary, some handlers if their wher lost, didn't mind the discomfort too much, as far as Kenna knew, it wasn't as serious as a dragon's flight, but Kenna had never been a shy one.

Kensk skulked into the entrance of the cavern, circling around, sticking close to the rough hewn wall, preferring to keep away from the other males, and maybe, depending on Darsk's choice of run direction, it would provide him with a greater advantage over the others.

Leaning up against the entrance, Kenna waited, nonchalantly picking at the dirt under her nails which never seemed to go away no matter how hard she scrubbed at them.

Darsk watched as her suitors approached, body tense, ready, waiting. Inside, the Gold was actually quite pleased by the turnout, a swathe of bronzes had taken up the call, with a speckling of blues and browns just to round out the group. A turn out worthy of her to be sure.

The reasonably average sized Gold was more than happy to take her time, looking at each in turn and sizing them up, wondering how they would fare. She didn't particularly care to recall who they were, instead only taking them on face value. How big were they? How strong? Would they be a good sire for her next clutch?

Eventually, and perhaps finally for some, Darsk turned and headed at a deadlong sprint around the far edges of the cavern, not passing anywhere near close to the pillar-like islands of stone that made the cavern a little more interesting and maze-like.

This was nothing tricky to begin with, Darsk's plan was not to test them, it was to get away from them and run as long and as far as possible. Her only thought was to her prospective clutch, and what would give her the largest and best outcome, she didn't care to have fun. Darsk was simply going to avoid their clutches for as long as possible.

Spoiler for OOC:
If you missed the first round don't worry about it just pop them in for this next round :3
I'll be posting the next Darsk round in about 18 hours this time (which'll be night time America time, early afternoon Aussie time)

It was really just habit for Ophy to keep an eye on the upcoming Run postings. His Bronze was a healthy one, after all, that relished the chance to chase regardless of whether the female in question was Green or Gold. And it was easier on both of them if he knew in advance around when the Runs were going to be; that way, it wouldn’t be a surprise when Ophysk’s demeanor became more aggressive and focused on potentially sating his lust rather than whatever task his handler had for him.

He was an obedient Bronze, all things considered. But even his patience and rather mild manners could become testy when there was a lady wher about to instigate a Run. Even more so when it was a Gold looking for a suitable sire for her next clutch.

So they were both ready, the day that Darsk took off post-patrol to the Run Cavern. And since it was a locked run rather than a free one, Ophy saw no reason to accompany his Bronze there. Ophysk knew the way, and could be trusted to behave himself on the path. It might unsettle those he passed to see a wher lacking a handler stomping his way to the Cavern, but beyond looking a little grumpy at them, Ophysk wouldn’t leave anyone the worse for wear.

Ophyonis, on the other hand, made his way back to his and Domnitissa’s room. He’d ride the Run Lust out on her as he did for other locked ones, and the free ones that he did not win.

Like the other males, Ophysk knew better than to approach Darsk before she actually fled from them. Her scrutiny he endured in silence, muscles tense and ready—and then once she took off, Ophysk was eager and ready to follow.

Straightforward runs were more his speed regardless. He was not a wher built for finesse or turning on a dime. But if Darsk wanted to run until one of them caught her, that he could do.

Evesk didn’t pay any mind to the other male whers that showed up, even if he’d been the first. Of course he had, since he’d been the one to initially let his handler know this was happening to begin with. Rather, he waited and watched Darsk. Paid no mind to whatever competition nosed and waited. He didn’t care.

Neither was he an overly aggressive or intense wher. Though he did want to win. This was his handler’s husband’s wher. He knew Darsk more than he knew any other wher and, outside of a run, was quite fond of her in the way he was fond of the other humans in his life.

Shame she didn’t generally feel any way about him. When she took off, Evesk was ready and sprung after her. Shoving a smaller wher out of the way and barreling over the creature when he proved to be too clumsy to correct himself quick enough.

If Evesk hurt the other wher, he didn’t care to check. Rather, he wanted after the Gold. Wanted to prove that he was strong and fast and would be the perfect sire for her clutch.

As soon as the Gold took off, with seemingly little tricks or teasing, Kensk felt even more excited for this run. He had never been very good at making quick decisions, and it had always been his downfall when greens required a certain amount of flair to attract their attention. Kensk was one of the larger whers here, that was for sure, but he wasn't particularly built for speed given his muscular build, regardless, Kensk thought he was in for a good chance.

When wher after wher arrived with no handlers in sight, Kenna shrugged and set off back the way she had come. The runlust was building up inside her however, a slow bubbling through her veins, and to try and negate the discomfort of the feeling, Kenna speed into a quick jog, the pumping of her muscles matching the boiling of her blood.

Kensk noted the bronze which all but bowled over one of the smaller competition, but he wasn't afraid, he could take him if the other competitor attempted some foul play, nor did he particularly care about the feelings of the wher which was quickly being left behind by Darsk and the group on her tail.

He stuck behind her, not trying to be tricky and cut her off, not yet at least, he had not the foresight to consider such a move.

Darsk pushed even harder as she heard the returning thumps of the males on her tail as they took off after her. Starting in the middle of the cavern had given her a bit of a headstart, and for now, they were within ear shot, but no where near tackle distance.

The gold had a way to go yet before she would tire and they would begin to gain on her, although it seemed that many were built larger and thicker than her, but Darsk had pure evolutionary motivation on her side. The males might only be seeking to be the first to catch her, but she was seeking a long run with the strongest winner.

If push came to shove and the run was coming to a close too quickly, Darsk wouldn't hesitate to fight tooth and nail to be free of their grip. Her clutch would not suffer for a male who didn't know when was the right time.

It was a strange thing perhaps, a Gold that only thought of her clutch, and not of the thrill of the chase, or the pure animalistic urge to be better than all those pursuing her. Darsk had her priorities and her urges well on lockdown, she always had.

Darsk didn't stick to the wall entirely however, one of the pillars supporting the main chamber was just... inconveniently placed in her opinion, and so she quickly cut across it, more towards the center of the cavern, before swerving back out again. She was fast, the was to be sure, and so perhaps the more clumsy of the back would catch themselves if they cut too close, but Darsk was not going to be looking back to check. Her eyes were forward, only thinking of where she would direct the run next.

Spoiler for OOC:
I've got a busy weekend, so next post will be Monday Aus time (in about 2 days). Again, if you've missed out and still wish to participate, jump on in, Darsk does not discriminate :3

Evesk was not a bright bronze. He didn’t think about where she might be going or how that might change his path. Rather, all he knew was that he needed to chase after her. Any wher that got in his way was simply bullied, bodily. Evesk was a big wher, capable of throwing his weight around when there was a reason for it.

Such as now.

When she altered her course, he rumbled between his panting breaths as he ran. Some out of frustration while he doggedly chased after her. Not willing to be left behind just because he’d not realized she’d need to change course. Of course he wasn’t looking ahead of her, where she might need to go or how she might need to adjust.

Oh no, he was all eyes and intent on her. Close and eager, but certainly not about to try and pounce when she was still so full of energy. Evesk was not in the mindset to fight a Gold.

The first closed Gold run in a while was too good of an opportunity for Nealros to pass up. Darsk was a respectable creature and Rossk was very abiding when it came to Golds. As Neal led his beast down to the cavern, fully muzzled, leashed and harnessed, he appraised the wher and handlers headed in the same direction. Gold runs pulled a more refined instinct out of the watchwher and he wasn’t surprised to see how many unaccompanied competitors were roaming around. Even Rossk seemed more focussed on what lay ahead and not the loose creatures around him.

The Brown lumbered into the cavern, his wide head swinging from side to side as he took in the scene and scents. The presence of so many Bronzes may have been unnerving to some, but not this pair. It didn’t heighten the stakes, only settled them more firmly. Feeling that Rossk was in the right mindset, Nealros removed muzzle, leash and harness. The heavy gear wasn’t necessary anymore, it’d only slow him down in the end. The pulse of Darsk’s lust was stronger than during a Green’s run. There was no question that the Brown’s mind was set solely to the task of winning.

Nealros himself, once more, would have to stay regardless. Unobtrusively he set himself away.

Rossk took his place among the queue of males, waiting. He didn’t challenge his competitors, nor attempt anything flashy. He wasn’t that sort of creature. On Darsk’s move, with a lazy and off kilter grace, he simply pursued.

Per his usual, Rossk didn’t press for speed just yet. Especially so early in the run it did no good to try to swerve and swing. If Darsk took a turn, he was far enough back that he could simply correct his path and reroute it in another generally straight direction. He’d bide his time, try to see some potential pattern to the Gold’s movement.

Tiynnalsk had been in many a run, although he didn’t have many wins under his metaphoric belt of late, one wouldn’t say he was particularly bad at Runs. He wasn’t, however, a real thinker during such an exciting lustful time. Pre-emptive thinking and movement, although he was trained to do so while fighting and during other chases, was something he tended to forget while chasing the tail of a female larger than he was, who could probably rip out his throat with any kind of training. And Darsk was a Gold that he knew of, a Gold with training, and one who only accepted the best in her mates.

Tiynnalsk was happy to provide a powerful competitor, even when there were many other challengers, he was happy with his chances.

As per usual, Tiy had been visiting her sister, this time with much of her family along as well. Many of the others chose to stay behind and find a cave for them and their significant others, Tiy, however, knew she’d have to suffer another Run alone. It’s not the best feeling, but at least no one would be judging her or her family for participating this time. Locked Runs were so much easier in the scheme of things, even if they were more difficult to bear.

They were on the late side of the arrivals, arriving just in time to see Darsk leap away from her males. A quick flash of lust and panic bolted through her from Tiynnalsk, thinking he was going to miss out as she hadn’t given him permission to leave her side. She quickly replied “go,” a little louder than she was intending, her stomach momentarily feeling bottomless until her Bronze bolted forward after the others.

It put him a little behind the pack, but he could last longer than the Blues and most of the Browns, and much like many of the other competitors, he was happy to put his body on the line to win. Although not usually a particularly aggressive wher, Runs were a little different, and the brief moment of panic had put him in a mood.

Growling at any who got too close or in his way, he slowly tried to rake his way back through the pack, although still behind many of the other Bronzes. He growled at the pillar too, also thinking it inconveniently placed, but only once his side slammed into it, his clumsiness slowing him once more. He didn’t stop though, he’d hit things harder and had them hit back, but it did tinge his purple eyes with swirling red.

The bonus was that those whers behind him had to avoid both him and the pillar, which took out a few of the less confident competitors.

Tiy watched anxiously, although to an outsider she probably just looked annoyed or constipated. She didn’t like interfering with her Bronze, and Tiynnalsk was usually a very well-mannered wher, but she would not hesitate to call him back immediately if he tried to start a proper fight. She wouldn’t allow that kind of behaviour from her bonded, not here, where she had to represent her family too. Even if it lost him the Run, he wouldn’t be getting into a fight this night.

Darsk was quick in her forward momentum, but she wasn't completely unpredictable, Kensk knew that there was one of two options, to the left or two the right of the pole, and if even he wasn't smart enough to try and anticipate the direction, he was at least aware that he had to follow.

He did so without flash or much grace, skidding along the ground, his claws scraping against the floor leaving marks for almost his entire body length before he managed to right himself. It put him a little behind those who had simply been able to follow without issue, but he was still in the fore half of the pack, he wouldn't allowed himself to get let behind.

When Kensk heard the dull thud of another wher colliding into the pillar behind him, he growled amusedly, lips curling as he did so. Hopefully that was another competitor out of the race, but when he looked behind, not smart enough to realise the pace it would lose him, Kensk spotted the bronze continuing, a little behind to be sure, but not rolled over onto his back by the pole as he had hoped. With a snarl, he turned his attention back to Darsk's shining Gold body pulling further and further away from him, and he put on a burst of speed, closing the gap once more.

Darsk was quite pleased that they all seemed to know their place, she could hear them thumping along behind her, their pantings breaths in chorus with hers making them all just a little worse for wear, but not enough so that the run would be finished any time soon. This Gold was going to run until her legs came out from under her as her mate bowled her over, so sooner than that.

It was a little satisfying to note that her not-so-interesting manoeuvre had at least been a message to some of her chasers. Keep their heads on straight and pay attention, otherwise she wasn't the Gold for them.

Not many Handlers had stayed to watch, Darsk's own had let her off to walk here herself, Evesk's, Ophysk's, even Kensk's young handler had given up not long into the run, and it was probably for the best. This wasn't going to be an interesting run, not like some pretty little green who didn't have a clutch to think of, Darsk refused to waste energy on things that made her look talented or the such. She already knew her own worth, she didn't need a pack of males to tell her that.

This was a test of pure strength of both body and willpower.

Darsk dashed forward faster again, her muscles burning with lust and pain as she pushed herself harder than before, gaining a bit of distance between her chasers, but again, simply running in as simple a path as she could around the circumference of the cavern.

Spoiler for OOC:
Another 2 days until the next post!
I might only do one or two more, and make them take up longer time frames since Darsk is insisting on being boring.
If you enter now, you can still be considered for the randomised winner! <3

At least she was predictable that was all that Kensk could think. She didn't seem to be trying anything fancy, just running. Running faster than anyone else in the cavern, she was more determined than the rest of them at the moment at least, whether or not some of the bronzes including himself outranked her size-wise, evidently that was all they would outrank her on, she was a queen after all.

But Kensk was starting get a little bored, his lack of hearing sort of dulling what could have been an interesting event for his senses, with the thudding of clawed feet to the front, side and back of him, and soft panting as the chase began to take it's toll.

Any chaser by now would be a little worse for wear, and Kensk's hide too began to get slick from the heat of the chase. They had been running, full-pelt, or at least close enough to, around the cavern with no relent in the speed with any fanciful tricks. Some may be built for endurance, but this would still be difficult.

Darsk’s cut around the pillar was about the trickiest of maneuvers that a Bronze like Ophysk could handle. Unable to redirect his momentum as quickly as another might, his feet skidded on the stone floor as he chased her, claws digging against the ground. He cast a spray of loose rock and dirt as he did so, no doubt into the face of some more unfortunate male behind him. But as with all Runs, there was no time to consider the others -- only the Gold ahead of him, fleeing from them all in the hopes that only the best would catch her.

All for a better clutch that way.

Yet that wasn’t Ophysk’s own concern either, but hers. All he knew, or could know in that moment, was his burning need to be the one to catch her, to claim her. Even the movements of the other chasers were ignored by him, including the collision of at least one of Darsk’s suitors with the pillar itself. Only narrowly did Ophysk avoid getting barreled into, snarling at his fellow Bronze, though without real heat.

Now would not be the time to fight another one of them. Not when there was still a Queen to pursue. He just wanted them out of his way.

Even for a creature of his size, strength, and endurance, this Gold was putting him through his paces. Her motions were not tricky, not difficult to predict -- beyond that singular zigzag around the inconveniently-placed pillar -- but she seemed virtually tireless. Lungs going like a bellows, Ophysk could feel the sharp burn of exertion in his muscles. Regardless of whether or not he caught her, this would be a tiring Run. All the better, as far as he was concerned. A Queen like this that would push them so far was certainly worth catching.

Rossk was far enough back to see the danger ahead, but that also meant he got a little caught in the fray of bodies attempting to dodge and disentangle themselves from the obstacle. He plowed through them as best he could, avoiding where possible but otherwise using his sheer size and strength to shove his competitors out of the way. It was a costly move, though, as it burned some of his reserves that he’d been saving to play catch up.

Nealros, eyes firmly shut and clutching the rocks around him, was repeating a mantra of patience, pacing, patience and pacing. It was an idle thought to his wher, though.

Blinded by the pull of lust, Rossk let himself loose. His legs, short as they were, pumped steadily faster to make up lost ground. The burst of speed would help now, but if the run continued for much longer he’d be sure to lag behind once more.

He was a singleminded creature. He didn’t notice the ache in his muscles as his clawed feet slammed into the rocky earth below. The intense desire to just run would force him on, beyond exhaustion.

Evesk might be a tough monster of a wher, but he was tiring. Though he wanted to win, a Gold was naturally bigger and often stronger with more stamina than even a bronze. There were built that way. That he’d been there first only gave him a fraction of a benefit, and just barely. Mostly because a Gold generally waited for a handful of suitors anyways.

The only advantage he’d had was over those who might have arrived late and that he’d been able to claim a position near enough toward the start of the run. Evesk had also been able to maintain a general close place because the run hadn’t really been tricky, just tiring. Darsk wasn’t trying to be clever, she was just trying to get away. Powerful and stunning. Evesk’s breaths came in deep, rumbling pulls as he pursued her.

It helped in a way that Everalsie was so removed from the Run. There were no distractions, no buzzing in his mind of her concern. It didn’t matter to her if he won or not – he was completely turned loose to either win or lose by his own merit.

He wanted to be worthy. Wanted to be the sire for the Gold, for her clutch.

Harder and harder, and on and on, and again and again, clawed feet thumping against the ground as she continued her run. Darsk was tiring now, a bead of perspiration dripping down her eye ridges, and she snorted a growl when it stung her purple tinged eye.

She didn't alter her route dramatically, but it wasn't a constant round and round in circles. Occasionally she led her posse across the middle of the cavern, the next time they looped around the circumference she decided to spin around a pillar and back in the other direction. It wasn't incredibly unpredictable, but many of the blues and browns were dropping out now, not able to sustain the close to a marks worth of constant running.

Even bronzes had given up on the chase, however she knew that the main pack behind her was significantly bronze in their composition. It always was, Darsk was only suited for the best of the mine hall, and she fought back any of those who sought to trick her and steal the limelight before she was ready.

But Darsk was tiring now, knowing that she was nearing the end of her limits, tiring, muscles aching, and the next turn she made was just a little too fast for her, and she felt a muscle in her back leg twinge with the overextension.

An angry snarl at her own pain, Darsk picked up her speed for one final test.

Spoiler for The Winner!:
Because Darsk is a force catch I'm going to give the winner the opportunity to powerplay the catch.
After a randomisation Evesk is the winner! Whoo! Congratulations Evesk! *party time* @SanctifiedSavage
All the rest of you can powerplay Darsk a little in an attempt to catch her as she flags, however, Evesk will ultimately win. She'd snap, body slam, tail whip, whatever to avoid being caught.

He pushed on, passing lesser wher as he went. Drool frothed freely from his muzzle and his eyes were a crazed purple, intermixing with grey now as his body protested. Still on he went until he found himself in the main pack of remaining competitors. Darsk was just barely ahead, tantalizing. His move was now or never.

With a surge of final effort Rossk leapt toward the Gold with all he had left. He knew he could run no longer and this was a final ditch effort to grab her by surprise. His jump wasn’t strong enough, however, not at this point. His forelegs, extended out to grapple, met only air and he was rewarded with a solid smack to the head and neck from Darsk’s tail. He fell heavily, sliding some feet before his great bulk finally came to a halt.

Nealros felt Rossk’s complete exhaustion. Even the heady rush of still-lingering emotion couldn’t compare to how the Brown felt. He’d given his all to this run, had he been beyond his prime it might’ve even been the death of him. Nealros himself hurt in more ways than one. The sore ache in his gut would at least find reprieve soon.

Opening his eyes, Nealros tried to judge Darsk’s path to see if it was safe for him to go to his wher. Rossk was still laying there, panting and sweating and likely nursing whatever pride he had left. He made a quick decision and jogged to his beast, collaring and leashing him quickly. A sharp tug was all that was needed for the Brown to get to his feet. They both quickly retreated to safer ground.
