Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

After Oriath's hatching had concluded with none of the bloodshed that Kalestath's clutch would no doubt be famous for, things on the sands had become much more subdued. Oriath left, giving Imyth and Maelboroth a bit more room to spread out, though this really only meant the Brown dragon had, on occasion, stretched out on the sands nearby Imyth instead of constantly wrapping himself around her whenever he was present.

There was still the slight tension hovering around the what-ifs of their clutch, though neither X'kis or Maelboroth fancied dwelling on those. What would be, would be, and each healthy dragonet hatched and bonded was another to secure the future of Pern. There was, of course, the usual speculation about the weyr as to what the clutch would unveil, but some of this had thankfully dispersed when Imyth's clutch didn't show any obvious signs of defects despite having been flown by a brown, and Oriath's had hatched without any issues.

Thus it was a proud Maelboroth who stood just to the side of his mate, X'kis leaning casually against his foreleg as he waited for O'sir to lead the candidates in once their lesson started. He would move forward to stand by Eimerra once the formalities were over, but for now had decided to stay away. She deserved the full respect of the soon to enter candidates, not to mention that a bit of distance as they walked in may help in the case of some… errant candidates. It was not something he wished on his weyrmate, but it was definitely something to be prepared for.

Ready old boy? He asked Maelboroth as the time for the touching grew closer.

The brown rumbled his affirmation, shifting slightly so as to get a better view of the front entrance, a warm mental reassurance offered to Imyth as he did so.

O'sir wasn't loud, per say, but X'kis smiled as he heard the somewhat familiar cadence as he reiterated his expectations of the candidates about to enter the sands. The tone had changed over the years, for sure, with the somewhat calmer approach since thread no longer rained down from on high, but the essence of the message remained the same, and while he did not speak loudly enough for X'kis to actually make out the words, it was not a hard task to discern what they were.

With such a small amount of time before the Candidatemaster finished speaking and the candidates actually entering the sands, X'kis spared a brief moment to catch his weyrmate's eye, a proud smile crossing his face as she looked at him. This was very much a clutch they could be proud of. There was no doubt about that.

Spoiler for OOC:

Your Candidate character may touch as many eggs as the thread is open for. They may interact with other candidates, Eimerra, X'kis or even O'sir. This is an opportunity for you to let your Candidate focus on the sort of dragon they want and will help us create a dragon to suit. The eggs are numbered for OOC references, though you may use the visual of them to describe just which your character touches.

The OOC thread can be found at the link.

Ysveta took a nervous little breath, holding it in momentarily, allowing her lungs to stretch and fill with the air before she let it all out in a huff, leaning down to grab her neatly folded clothes sitting at the foot of her bed.

It is just another hatching, no extravagant deal, I have done this numerous times before, why should I be nervous this time?

Slipping the clothes over her head, she tucked her head into her chest, peering intently to see if there were any wrinkles or imperfections in her clothing. Whilst it wasn't something Ysveta was particularly anal about on a normal day, this one felt different. She'd attended the previous touching, but it had certainly been a different experience, just attending for the sake of it, as she'd been informed without a doubt by the healers that it would not do for her to actually stand at the hatching.

Fortunately, she'd been given the all clear not too long ago, and whilst her back still twinged, everything had sealed itself, the scars only slightly raised, and a lot less angry looking than they'd been over the past few months. The scar down her face was definitely something that had taken some... getting used to. Luckily for her sanity, mirrors were few and far between at the Weyr, and so the ugliness of her new addition had gone mostly unnoticed by her, even if everyone else in the candidates barracks could see it as a constant reminder of Kalestath's last hatching.

Oriath's and Leremith's had gone wonderfully however, little injuries, only a few little scratches as far as she had noticed, and without the loss of life the last hatching had seen. Hopefully... this one would go just as smoothly.

With her clothes placed neatly on her body, Ysveta made her way across to the hatching sands with the rest of the candidates, and after the all clear from O'sir, and a bow to the Junior Weyrwoman and Weyrsecond pairs respectively, she stepped gingerly onto the sands. Choosing to make her away to the far side, where a greyish, mostly unattractive coloured egg [8] seemed to sit by itself, placing her hand upon it's surface, feeling the texture, the heat, and... nothing else.

Has a scar from jaw to hairline across her left cheek, obtained in Kalestath's hatching of 2590.

Isa Listened to O'sir and smiled as she nodded her head when they where allowed to go on the sands she walked onto the sands with sandal soles on her feet that where thin and leather holding them on that you could hardly see making it look like she was bare foot. She had desensitized her feet to the heat of the sands as she had stood on the sands with a in shoes with the soles slowly getting thinner and thinner just on the edge to when there where no eggs to get her feet used to the heat. She Bowed to the Jr. Weyrwoman and her Gold then walked to the Brown and his rider bowing to them as well. After she gave her formalities to the clutch mother and Father she made her way to the first egg that caught her eye a mint green one (6). She kneeled beside the egg placing her hand onto the egg and softly speaking to it.

"Hello little one. I hope you are doing okay. I am not sure what color you are but I know you will be a strong loving Dragon. I hope when you hatch you find your mate and you both even if it is not me are happy."

As she spoke softly to the egg she sent the hatching inside warm and loving thoughts. She stayed with the egg for a good ten minutes before moving to the next egg an orangey white one (3). She placed her hand on the egg and spoke the same words to this egg as she knelt before it. She also sent the hatchling inside warm and loving thoughts. She stayed with the egg ten minutes before moving on to the Red and white egg (10) and staying near it placing her hand on it and talking to the hatchling inside the egg.

Trundiffsle had heard everything many time but still listened when it was over he went onto the sands and bowed to the Weyrwoman her mate and both dragons before heading to the Chocolate Brown striped egg and laying a hand on the egg just stood there. He was not like the other candidates that spoke to the eggs he would just keep his hand on the egg and send out warm thoughts to the egg and the hatchling inside it. This was also the only egg in the bunch he was interested in.

Tolanna heard the pre-touching speech enough times before that the words mostly rolled past her. She fidgeted with a small, smooth pebble of sea glass from her collection until they were finally allowed on the sands. The little treasure was stashed in a pocket before she gave the proper bows and greetings to the draconian parents and their bonded.

She paused and took a deep breath before approaching the clutch. The former smith was quietly skeptical of ever impressing a dragon, but she pushed that aside, giving herself a quick mental pep-talk. She had been Searched for a reason! What would have been the point of leaving her beloved craft if she didn't at least try? Besides, if nothing else, she wanted to send only positive, encouraging thoughts to the growing baby dragons.

With a brighter smile and happier thoughts, Tolanna approached a mottled teal and white egg [11] that reminded her very much of the greenish bit of glass in her pocket. With a touch much lighter than her scared and callused hands might have lead anyone to expect, she lay her palm against the egg. Not bothered by the heat of the sands, she dropped to a knee to spend several minutes sending nebulous thoughts of joy, anticipation, and love.

Rising again, Tolanna looked around the clutch and was drawn to an egg in the middle, yet set apart.  She smiled to Isalia as she carefully stepped around her, not wanting to interrupt the other candidate as she talked to a red speckled egg [10] near the “glass” one.

The egg that had actually caught the young woman's attention was a streaky brown [9], very much a softer version of the egg Trundiffsle seemed to favor. Again, a gentle touch, tracing one streak down the egg, another back up. She didn't speak, but as with the first egg simply knelt for a little while to send the growing creature within thoughts of encouragement and happiness.

It was a rare day that Oarlen didn’t look forward to a touching and the fact it would ultimately mean a hatching around the corner, but this one was just a bit special. Up until that turn, he had never put much credence to the idea that a brown dragon would be able to fly a gold. It happened regularly enough with firelizards, sure, but not everything the little creatures did translated to their larger counterparts, and he had been one of the many surprised people to find out their newest weyrsecond was a brownrider.

It boded well for his future. He still felt like he’d end up bonding to the biggest dragon in the weyr, and there was still that teeny tiny niggly thought that reds and blacks might have paved the way for a mutant queen who would let him ride her, but Maelboroth was a wonderful example of a large brown… and Oarlen didn’t mind the idea of ending up with a dragon like him. Not that that was going to happen, of course… Since he couldn’t bond with a gold he’d bond with a Bronze. He was sure of it.

Nevermind the nights spent wondering about whether he was actually meant to be a candidate.

Whether he’d even survive candidacy.

Or worse yet. Find his bonded only to deal with watching her get torn apart by one of her siblings.

He shuddered.

The horror after the fact was nothing compared to what it would have been had he actually been lucid for that traumatic event. And the comparable tranquility of Oriath’s clutch managed to further shove that thought process back to the dark recesses of the child’s mind where it rightfully belonged… He just had to make sure he didn’t go to bed with a busy mind. That was all.

But this wasn’t Oriath or Kalestath’s clutch. And as O’sir led the way into the hatching grounds, Oarlen stopped to give the small queen and large brown a bow each, hem of his robes brushing the heated sands as he bent, pausing long enough to ensure he gave each the proper respect before separating from the group.

There was no danger in being clumped together. Not when the eggs were showing no signs of hatching. But Oarlen was taking no chances. Oriath’s hatching had bolstered his confidence, and the chaos that was Imyth’s last hatching had died to only a slight tingle of deja-vu as he approached the first group of eggs.

“You’re not gonna cause us any trouble are yous? Gonna take your time and find your bonded without all the hustle and bustle of the other hatchings.” He said gently, squatting down on the sands in front of a plain looking egg with a grey speckling [1], and its partner, a brown speckled one that almost looked as though it was being supported by it.

“You got spots just like Freckles, don’t ya know?” He added as he shuffled close enough to touch the first of the eggs [1], stroking along the discolouration before reaching out to poke (gently) at the speckles on the other. “Will you hatch with speckling? Spots and Speckles… I’ll remember that. If you were my bonded I’d have to call you that, I reckon… Spots or Speckles. Will you like eachother?”

He’d never really thought about where eggs were situated and how that would translate to their dragonets, but it was a curious thing… He’d heard older riders speak of shells not denoting colours, but he didn’t fully believe them. There had to be some inkling about what the dragon inside would be. Surely something of their shells gave something away. “I think you ought to hatch first, Speckles… Over here.” He patted the side furthest away from the first egg, hesitant to do too much lest he incite the clutchmother’s wrath. The shell was stiff beneath his hand though. Just as O’sir had promised. And while he wouldn’t go quite so far as to try and move the speckled egg away from its sibling, talking a little more might help guide the future hatchling.

“So long as you stay patient, Spot, you two would be alright. I’ll stand nearby… Right over there.” He turned to indicate a spot not too far away, caught up in just chatting at the eggs like they were already friends. It’d mean he could keep an eye on them both. And see if they ended up hatching with spots or speckles.

“I have to go see the other eggs… But I’ll come back afterword if there’s time.” He paused a moment, balanced on the balls of his feet, hands on his legs now that he wasn’t touching either egg. “If you wanted to hatch early… we’re all ready for you too.” He added with a grin before standing up and giving his robes a quick brush.

“I’ll be back” he reiterated before shuffling aside. Giving the clutchmother another polite nod as he skirted around to the next egg that caught his eye.

She didn't spend long at the grey-green coloured egg [8], not wanting to occupy it for any longer than necessary, after all, it was only polite, and Ysveta was anything if not polite... when she knew the rules of the interaction.

As she turned to cast her eyes across the small clutch of eggs, Ysveta watched the other candidates meandering around the hot sands. She narrowed her eyes and cocked her head in confusion as she spotted the flash of bare feet from Isalia, knowing that it was highly likely she'd have to be moving off the sands as the flesh on the soles of her feet burned by the sands they only got to experience a few times a turn. But it didn't have anything to do with her, and she didn't particularly care if Isalia wanted to burn her feet or not, even if it did really quite confuse her, so Ysveta's attention was quickly turned back to the eggs.

Tolanna stood and moved on from an egg not far away, so Ysveta shifted by to take her spot at the white mottled egg [11]. Ysveta couldn't quite decide whether it was green or blue, the colour seeming to fade in and out of both of the colours, something which she realised she hadn't seen upon any dragon before. It had always been quite clear whether dragon was green or blue.

She imagined the egg breaking open in front of her, the stands filled with people, a faint hum rising in her ears. The dragon that burst from the egg was first green, like Rantasyth, like her mother's dragon, an idea which soothed her, impressing a green like her mother, but as it padded across the sands, it faded to a blue, and she was surprised to feel... content at the idea of a blue dragon choosing her. Ysveta had seen female blue riders at the Weyr before, it didn't seem to have much of a taboo to associate with it, unlike the reds or the blacks.

Taking her hand off of the egg, Ysveta shook her head to clear her mind, excited so far at the prospect of knowing... at least for now what she thought she was comfortable with.

Has a scar from jaw to hairline across her left cheek, obtained in Kalestath's hatching of 2590.

The end of the turn always seemed to speed up for Cabryn. In the first months, it always seemed like there was plenty of time for sitting down and pouring all her concentration onto a task, but towards the end, with two hatchings, graduations, the older weyrlings moving into their adult rooms, maiden flights, Cabryn felt more like she was flitting between tasks than actually achieving anything. All of the events weren’t even really hers, other than the hatchings, and touchings of course, but it still felt like there was so little time to sit still.

It wasn’t… it wasn’t a bad feeling, because in her mind, she knew she was on top of her chores, but she missed the calm that came from losing her mind into a task for hours. It felt like… she couldn’t really focus, like every time she tried to sit on an idea or work something out she was interrupted. For a couple of sevendays, she had felt like her brain had been more hot air than any actual thought, like every opinion her mind strung together was blown away leaving her empty. Given that Cabryn always found solace in those hours of detail, it felt like she was more nervous for Imyth’s clutching than she’d been of any before.

With the other hatchings, she’d always had time to prepare in the upcoming weeks, to steady herself, to remind herself of everything she’d been taught, everything O’sir had said, everything that would help her be calm and ready for if her bonded was there. But for Imyth’s… she hadn’t. The only thing that ran around her head was… only two more chances. Two more hatchings. A

And one of them loomed much nearer than she’d like as she followed the Candidate Master onto the burning sands. At least that felt familiar, the heat that one could deal with for a couple of minutes before needing to hop from foot to foot, but having to try and cover it so that one didn’t look embarrassed by the watching Masters and Riders and Weyrwomen.

Following protocol, Cabryn bowed to Eimerra and Imyth, and then to X’kis and Maelboroth, with a soft “congratulations, the eggs are lovely.” Some might think they didn’t deserve a bow, but Cabryn didn’t see much point in that, the clutch was at least part theirs, and all the Weyrseconds worked hard regardless of their colour. Cabryn wouldn’t say the clutch was half the Browns, having been pregnant with just one kid at a time, she considered carrying a clutch of 12 to be a little more stressful than standing by and watching, but they were still his.

Waiting for a moment to be polite, in case he replied, the older candidate off to the side while she inspected the eggs. She had no feelings to any eggs in particular, and unlike Kalestath’s clutching, she hadn’t worked out her plan of attack beforehand. So she just… watched for a bit. Waited for… any kind of inspiration to move into the mottled eggs.

She saw Ysveta moved to an egg off to the side, sitting alone. Cabryn liked the younger girl, but it was reasonably fitting for her to pick a lonely one, she always stood out, even more so now with her scars. Isalia moved quickly to a green, then orange mottled, then white, speaking softly to them as she went. Cabryn smiled softly at the image of the carefree young girl. Trundiffsle, as decisive as ever, moved right to the egg furthest away. Her eyes passed over, Tolanna, and was mildly impressed by the girl having her knee in the sand just to talk to an egg, possibly her egg. Oarlen always made her smile, but instead of watching him shuffle through the eggs, her gaze kept drifting back to the soft orange mottled egg [3] that she’d seen Isalia touch.

The soft colour reminded her of the very beginning of sunrise, as it spread across the egg between clouds. So, she moved over to it, ‘sorry’ and ‘excuse me’ spoken softly as she navigated her way between the crowd of candidates. Spreading her palm over the top she felt the warmth inside the egg, but nothing more. Not that she was expecting much, she hadn’t felt anything but warmth in her previous hatchings, and warmth was enough of a comfort to think it likely the dragon still lived. She didn’t speak, didn’t push any emotions towards it, just thought back of all her fellow candidates she’d watched impress. She skirted over those in Kalestath’s hatching, the horrors still a bit much to look past, but she thought of her first hatching, the looks of awe and love as candidates watched their dragon’s eyes swirl rainbow. Occasionally someone would cry, sheer happiness overwhelming them as they realised they’d never be alone again.

For a moment, Cabryn felt more steady than she’d felt in a month or so, and she quickly pulled her hand away from the egg before she could feel chagrined that none of that joy had been for her. She muttered a quiet “one day,” to herself as she looked over the eggs. As she passed a brown splattered one [4] she ran her hand over the hardened surface, not staying but just passing with a brief reassurance that it wasn’t left alone. She finally came to a rest at a plain egg [5], and placed her hand on it like she’d done with [3]. She didn’t think of anything in particular this time, she just let herself breath and feel the texture of the shell beneath her hand. Given the amount of people milling around, each with their own methods of talking to the eggs, she just wanted a moment of calm with the soft plain egg.

"Stay here," he told Requiem, depositing the bronze on the little stand in his office. Halraen knew the egg touching would be soon -- he kept an idle ear out for it in order to go in support of those students who decided to leave the harpercraft to follow the call of the dragons.

Halraen had thought, long ago, that maybe a dragon would be calling to him at some age. He had been desperate for the Harper Hall, desperate to join his family, but what small child at Fort Weyr didn't dream of dragonhide at least once in their life? At twelve, he joined the Hall with excitement, but as it mellowed out and others in his class were called away to the weyr, it make him long for it too.

Now, turns away from the last chance to be a rider, he didn't regret his course in life. The Harper Hall had given him much, over the turns. It gave him his first wife and daughter, it gave him purpose, it gave him the understanding that there was more in this life than being focused on what was in it for him. He learned to teach and help, to train others, and to give everyone else the tools they needed to be successful in life.

He met his best friend turned brother, a man who welcomed him with open arms and helped him remember how to smile and laugh again. And then, he met his wife, a woman who kept him young and full of love.

Still, slipping into the Hatching Sands, the child in him marveled again at the magnificent brilliance of the gold Imyth, dangerous mother of the eggs nested into the sand. He walked to the edge of the bleachers, standing just on the border between stands and sands. From there, he bowed to the gold and to the junior weyrwoman, giving them their due respect regardless of if they noticed him or not.

He sat in the first row, sliding down to the center of the bench. Halraen was quiet, pensive, almost, as he watched the candidates move through the eggs in a reverent dance. It was a dance practiced and learned since nearly the beginning of Pern itself. He was sure at one point the Hall had a record of the first Touching, but so many important and interesting facets of their past had been loss to the devastation of Thread.

But each Candidate knew the moves, knew how to move through the eggs, how to respect their clutch mother, how to touch and meet the eggs at their feet. He noticed a few of his students among those milling around, waiting for their turn to approach a particular egg or a group of eggs. He caught the eye of one and gave them an encouraging smile, motioning for them to go back to the eggs.

Dragons might not be for him, but these candidates had their own life partner waiting for them.
