Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Flits here, as well as whers.  There are Candidate events and classes and Crafter plots. A little bit of something for everyone.

Daysa always worked through the dinner shift. As weyrfolk, it was just one of the things she did. Get up early, work out in the fields doing whatever was needed, retreat to the kitchens for lunch, spend some of the evening with her children, then work in the kitchens for dinner. Afterwards, she usually went up to M'kale's weyr and... Well, whatever happened from there was up to him.

Her schedule was easier now that her flits were older and mostly listened to what she wanted, but Moss was still trying at times. Like a petulant babe, she often flew off in the evenings to do whatever it was female flits felt the need to do. Explore, hunt, or find someone that was interesting. Daysa sometimes got the very distinct impression from her little Green that she didn't like M'kale. Moss was attracted to music and laughter, people smiling and having and good time.

Things that M'kale wasn't exactly known for. While Moss didn't bite M'kale, she did hiss at him often and make herself distanced from him. Though she usually still liked being around Daysa, so it was odd that during dinner clean up the little Green hadn't made herself present. Which meant that Daysa had to go looking for her. After a quick and quiet apology to M'kale, and a promise it wouldn't take long to hunt the little Green down, Daysa darted off down the tunnels of the weyr to do just that.

There wasn't too much of a concern she'd get in any trouble. The Weyr was winding down and she did have Guard. He took his job of looking after Daysa quite seriously. While Moss might fly off and explore, or do whatever it was she did, Guard didn't let Daysa out of his sight unless forced to. Which was just about never. He followed her, lazily flapping his large wings. Unconcerned his 'sister' flit was missing.

Guard might be protective of Moss as well, but Daysa was always his first priority. With a small huff, she followed Guard's mental cues to where Moss must be. He seemed to always know, even if he never followed after her.

Moss had tired of the work in the weyrhall and had, as per the norm, gone exploring for someone or something delightful. She'd found it in the form of a delightful little Red in the weyrbowl, whom she was presently playing tag with.

It was still hard to believe just how quickly Sayimith had grown. Of course, her growth was vastly different than that of any other color—just now, she was the size that some of his classmate’s dragonets had been when they hatched, which was something Erieen had trouble getting over. Not out of any sense of inadequacy, or that he wanted her to be bigger than she was. It was just such a drastic difference, knowing how much bigger she had gotten by her own standards, and still seeing her dwarfed by some of the larger colors, who were a full ten meters longer than her.

The size difference was staggering. Privately, he worried what Flights might be like for his pretty little Red if she was always so much smaller, but he did his best to muffle those thoughts from her:  to not let his mind linger on them for more than a second or so. And Erieen really did try not to worry in general, but he supposed that was just part of his nature. At least Sayimith didn’t seem to mind.

His little Red herself wouldn’t hear anything said about her size. Rather than be self-conscious about it, she just seemed… oblivious. Sayimith didn’t seem to know that any other dragon really was bigger than her, and it had never intimidated her nor stopped her from being ready to fight anyone that even remotely annoyed her rider. She had all the confidence of the largest Bronze, and though she wasn’t waspish and aggressive, Sayimith wasn’t about to back down for anyone.

That, coupled with her endless and boundless energy, made taking care of her exhausting. Nevertheless, Erieen wouldn’t have it any other way. There could be no sense of complacency with her, and it served to remind him every day that this was real.

As hard as it was, and as much as he knew others were keeping tabs on them just like the other mutation riders, he couldn’t be anything but happy. Compared to his life before, it was all perfect.

He was still getting used to letting her be while he ate. She’d been so small for so long that he could still take her with him into the Weyr Hall, but finally even Sayimith had grown too large to accompany him. And left to her own devices, she got restless. The Red lady hated waiting, and informed Erieen as such every day no matter how long he took. He’d even gone to dinner late, taking time to oil her right away after their training and even wrestle with her some in the grass. It wasn’t something he would have ever seen himself doing before, but for her… well, he would do just about anything. And Sayimith had learned to be mindful of her claws and teeth, so it was just harmless fun that served to placate her while he bolted down some food.

Hurry up, Erieen, she’d trilled to him while he ate, rolling in the grass to entertain herself, tail lashing back and forth in impatience. I want to play more… Oh! Hello!

He felt her attention stray, and she didn’t bother to cut off her words to… whoever or whatever she had encountered. //Who are you talking to?// Even as he asked it, Erieen hurriedly ate the last few bites of his food and then moved to the kitchen entrance to deposit his plates. All sorts of concerns sprang to his mind—that she was going to get herself in trouble, or that someone with less than good intentions could be interacting with her. No one had indicated an aggression they would act on toward the mutation colors, likely because of the implications of what would happen if they were to be seriously injured, but that didn’t stop him from worrying either.

Sayimith snorted derisively at his thoughts. You worry too much. I’m fine. And she all but shoved an image into his head of the tiny Green she was playing with. As small as she was, it could have been Lady, but she was the wrong color—and he knew her and Guard were curled up napping on his bedfurs back in the weyrling barracks. We’re playing tag.

//Who does she belong to?// He did relax some at her answer, but he still rushed out to the Weyr Bowl even so. And the only reply he got from Sayimith was a bright, No idea!

Erieen couldn’t help but smile as he emerged into the evening air and saw his pale little dragon running quite comically from the flit. Well… it seemed no harm was being done, and at least she was enjoying herself. It would give him a few moments to relax, maybe; after the day’s training and then wrestling with such a larger and stronger creature, he was worn out.

But he did spot a woman a little younger than him watching the two of them, accompanied by a Bronze firelizard. Moving up side by side with her, he smiled a little. “Is that your Green?”

Either Guard was having difficulty locating Moss, or Moss was intentionally being obtuse. Whatever it was, Daysa felt like she was walking in circles in the tunnels. Going past the kitchens twice, near the store rooms, and eventually out into the cool, darkening air of the wayrbowl. She was about to throw her hands up and go back to M'kale when Guard trilled and flared his wings near her heel, impressing upon Daysa in his  forceful way the image of Moss.

Playing with a dragon.

Quite literally.

The Green lady was quick to make friends in the exact opposite way that Daysa was and had found the Red dragon a delight. Tag was exactly the sort of game Moss loved, especially when the participant was so enthusiastic about both running and chasing her. Guard was a lump when it came to playing and she wasn't about to try and play with M'kale or his Bronze. The darling Sayimith, though, was the perfect playmate and she happily ignored Daysepona to continue their small game of tag without a care in the world. No matter how desperately Daysa might try to call after her.

Guard, now that Moss was located, landed near Daysa on the ground and contented himself. He wasn't about to chase after the much faster Green either. Instead, he just watched with blue eyes.

Daysa was so caught up in her hopeless irritation at her flit she didn't even notice the boy walk over to her and ask if that was her flit. Panic and shame laced up her spine and she dipped a quick bow and stammered an apology. "I-I'm s-s-so sorry! I-I’m sure s-she's just..." and she didn't even have an excuse for Moss' behavior. The Green was so willful and flighty. No matter her attempts at training her!

If there was anything Erieen wasn’t used to, it was being bowed to. So he blinked in surprise when the girl reacted to his presence in such a way, and all the more so when she quite literally stammered out an apology. It was the sort of hurried, self-effacing backpedaling that he’d seen from fellow drudges on so many occasions he'd lost count. He might not know her background, or if she was just the sort of person that was awkward around others, but her reaction struck a chord in him he hadn’t felt in a long time.

Erieen knew he was no one to be afraid of, and he’d never really wanted to be either. He wouldn’t have punished her for—curiosity? Having an active flit?—even if he had been in a position to do so.

So he smiled more noticeably then, and tried to make it gentle. Genuine. “Hey. It’s alright. It’s actually a relief Sayimith found someone to play with.” And he glanced out at his dragon with a readily evident fondness. “I don’t know that I would have enough energy to right now.”

It wasn’t a lie, either. With Sayimith happily playing, he was content just to watch her for a while. And she was more or less oblivious to the conversation he was having now anyway, once it wasn’t with her. She’d never been the sort to really notice people other than himself, except in the cases of someone he convinced her was important. Who so far only numbered the Weyrlingmasters and C’ace.

He didn’t hold out his hand to shake, since that seemed a little overly formal, but he did want to put the girl more at ease. “I’m Erieen. That’s Sayimith.” He gestured at the Red, and offered the girl another smile. “What’s your name?”

Moss was utterly immune to Daysepona’s panic. She knew that her bonded was frequently worried about social interactions and such things just didn’t bother the Green. Especially when she was having such a good time. If the boy happened to be mean to her Daysa, that would change. But that seemed highly unlikely when the dragon was being so nice too!

That, and Guard was there. Eyeing Erieen with red tinted eyes of suspicion and irritation. He just didn’t like people interacting with his Daysa.

When he didn’t seem to mind that his dragon was being bothered by Moss, Daysa breathed a heavy sigh of relief and some of the panic subsided. She knew all too well that Riders had busy schedules. “You’re too kind,” Daysa murmured, and she meant it. He could’ve been really annoyed Moss was there at all.

When he introduced himself, Daysa’s face heated up and she offered a timid smile. “Oh. Uhm. Name’s Daysepona. That’s Moss. And this little grump is Guard.”

Sayimith herself was still oblivious to anything but her game with the Green, who she trilled a challenge to as the flit tagged her again. Were she just a little bit older, she might have even incorporated some short hops of “flight” into their game; but young as she was, the Red’s wings were not yet strong enough to hold her even in a glide. And contrary to most other dragons, she had no impulse to take to the air anyway. Running was just fine for her.

Erieen did notice the Bronze’s red-tinted gaze, but ultimately he ignored it. He had no ill intentions toward the girl, and kept a respectful distance rather than getting overly familiar. True, it was possible that this was the kind of firelizard that didn’t necessarily always need a reason to be territorial… but he’d take that chance. He hadn’t seen anything to indicate it wasn’t trained to behave.

At the stranger’s murmur, Erieen shrugged it off with a slight wave of his hand. “Really, it’s no big deal.” It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate what she said, but rather he really did want to make it clear that he hadn’t said as much only out of politeness. As much as he’d always tended to keep to himself before, the security that came with Impressing made it easier to talk to people.

Even if there was the chance that they might judge him for the color he’d bonded to. Erieen didn’t feel even remotely ashamed about it—and rather than being defensive, he was perfectly willing to argue with anyone who would think to insult his dragon. Unlike other parts of his life, this wasn’t something he was afraid of.

“It’s nice to meet you, Daysepona.” He returned her smile—he’d been doing that, smiling, more often since the Red had chosen him too. Less affectation and more earnest happiness. “I’d tell Sayimith to introduce herself to you too, but she’s sort of…” He wasn’t sure what word he wanted. “Unaware of people.”

The Weyrlingmasters had told him that wasn’t uncommon for young dragonets. They had little attention for matters beyond themselves and their rider for the first several months. But there was also a certain element to Sayimith’s dismissiveness that he wasn’t sure would ever really go away.

Moss wasn't being overly unfair in the fact she could, and did, fly. Rather, that was just how she was able to be so quick! But she was always within tagging height for the little Red. That's what playing a game was about, after all! It wouldn't have been fun or fair if she'd just flapped up and out of reach for the entire game so Sayimith just couldn't reach. She much preferred the fun back and forth of a real game of tag.

Daysa clasped her hands behind her back and chewed on her lower lip, a bit anxious and nervous. The Rider seemed genuine in what he said. Not angry or annoyed that his dragon was indeed being pestered by Moss. Her attention wandered to the little Red and her game of tag with Moss. Daysa knew that Moss was enjoying herself - she could feel the delight from the little flit - but dragons were always  a wonderous mystery to Daysa. Even if she got to see M'kale's bronze so frequently. It wasn't like they got to converse or the like. She was always respectful of the dragon, but she could never envision him playing like the Red was.

"D-don't worry about it," she managed, some of her nervous stammer still lingering. Dragons always seemed more aware of their riders than anything else. Or at least to her, that was the perception. She wouldn't have expected the Red to introduce herself to Daysa at all. "She... Uhm, she's very...p-pretty." It wasn't just a polite compliment either. The little Red was quite graceful and gorgeous chasing after Moss.

Sayimith would have grown tired of her playmate rather quickly if the Green had “cheated”—but this was fun! Especially since she got to run and jump to her heart’s content, without Erieen’s worry bothering her. In more crowded places, he’d always been afraid of her being stepped on, or running into someone. But out here in the Bowl, after chores and drills were done for the day, they had ample space to chase.

Bunching her muscles, she launched herself upward to bump the flit’s tail with her snout, the jump far more competent than any “normal” dragon’s had a right to be. She took off in the opposite direction with another trill, and happily asked her rider, Why don’t Escort and Lady play with me like this?

//Lady is delicate,// was his automatic response, even though he supposed Daysepona’s Green, Moss, was just about as tiny. //And I guess Escort just isn’t the sort to play.//

You should teach them. She said it with all her usual confidence, as though it was a definite thing. But somehow, Erieen just couldn’t picture either of his flits acting like this one.

There was no faster way to get on his good side than complimenting Sayimith, though. So when Daysepona said she was pretty, he practically beamed. Certainly not an expression most who knew him would have expected. “Thank you.” After always hearing so many whispers and rumors about Reds like his, it was nice to be met with something else. “I’ve always thought she looks like a flower… Or what I imagine they’re supposed to look like, anyway.” That was admitted a bit more quietly, the thought slipping out before he really had a chance to stop it.

Moss had absolutely no qualms in not holding back, racing around both chasing and being chased in the weyr bowl with the Red. It was all great fun! Especially because the dragon wasn’t being aggressive or angry about anything. Rather, she was quite enjoyable to play with. Moss was always close enough that the Red could touch her – always making the game fair – because what would the point be otherwise? She also twirled and dipped low, sometimes forcing the Red to dip down and get close to the grass.

Seeing the Rider smile in such a way put Daysepona further at ease. No one could smile like that and be upset, not even hiding it. That smile was genuine. When he said that his dragon looked like a flower, she looked at the little Red and considered the statement before shrugging a little. “I wouldn’t really know, to be honest. Not really havin’ seen much myself. But she is a really nice color, not havin’ seen much of a color like that. Since most are all… natural-like colors, ya know?”

Sayimith was just as happy to dip lower to the ground as she was to jump, slinking along nearly on her belly when the flit’s actions prompted her to. Her claws left some rends in the grass, peeling up clods of dirt when she pushed herself upward again and showering herself with sprays of soil.

Erieen supposed she would need wiped down once she was done playing, but so be it. He could touch up any dry spots on her hide at the same time too. And at least the ground was dry—if the Bowl had been muddy, it would have been so much more work to get her clean again. His Red lady might be tinier than most, if not all, of the dragons in their class, but she was still so much bigger than she’d been when she hatched. In a way, Erieen was even grateful for her relatively smaller size. Usually, he got done oiling her before those on larger dragons even got halfway done.

“I haven’t really seen them either.” He was usually careful about revealing parts of his past for fear of giving away too much detail, but that was rather benign. Most people, unless they regularly worked with the Farmers, were not exposed to flowers anymore.

But he was still pleased with the compliments. “She certainly does stand out,” he reflected after a moment, unable to repress another smile. Other Reds might be even brighter than her, but to him she was the prettiest of them all.

Erieen gestured at the grass then. “It looks like they might be at it a while. We could sit, if you like. I wouldn’t mind the company.”
