9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Feel free to say hello, guesties! Registered members can request a colored name here.

Southern Winds is a Mature Roleplay. This means we allow for sexual, violent content that would be found in a struggling, 9th Interval Pern. Sex is common place in the Weyr and terrible deaths are no stranger here. As such, our players should be 18+. These themes are to be handled maturely at all times.

Hope for a Good Hunt [ 24.4.2591; 6:10 AM ] || Event
« on: July 12, 2018, 12:43:24 PM »
Having the Weyrleader change their schedule for any reason was not something that anyone in Jungle Wing relished. In many cases it was just the principle of the thing—having that upstart Black rider tell them what to do didn’t go over well with more traditional riders. But this time, N’syn had to admit that it made sense. The Weyr’s supply of fish was dwindling rapidly, especially with the lingering shortages after the Fishers’ stockpiles had been ruined. And they could hardly rely on Beasthall for all their food; the Herders might supply what meat and other goods they could, but the populations of animals were still small.

So there was only one thing to do. Many in his Wing, he knew, bristled at the idea that S’bok was implying they weren’t doing their jobs. Or that they weren’t doing them well enough. But N’syn didn’t think that was it, really. More the simple fact that if they had more people in the jungle, they could catch more wherry.

Also potentially draw more Hunters, but that was a risk they all knew they had to take. It was that or starve.

Which meant he, at least, wasn’t one of the ones grumbling as both Jungle and Beach gathered in the Weyr Bowl—together for once, and not apart. Prairie was just about to start their ferrying service for the day, but N’syn still spied some of their number breaking away from the rest of the Wing to join the formations that had coalesced together. There were even some Mountain riders, if he wasn’t mistaken, and reserve riders from all four Wings that were setting up the cleaning stations they would be working throughout the day.

“Thanks,” he mumbled, as his two flits helped him check Tasuroth’s straps for tightness. In the many months since his injury, the pair of young firelizards had settled into the routines of helping him with tasks that normally required two hands. Tiaris, bigger and stronger, was good for bracing things for him or providing leverage. And Tialden, all tiny and delicate, was well-suited for finer work that required finesse.

The two of them settled at the front of Tasuroth’s saddle to wait as N’syn climbed up, his Brown patiently waiting for him to buckle himself in. Are you ready? he asked at last, as the Wingleaders and their ‘Seconds indicated that it was time to go.

//Yeah. Let’s go.// As one, the separated formations rose into the air and blinked Between in staggered rotation. With a ranked rider leading each one—L’ale, in his case—the groups were meant to hunt in different sections of the jungle—both to avoid having so many riders gathered in one conspicuous place, and to avoid scaring each other’s game.

The icy effects of the teleportation relieved some of the humidity already sweltering through riding leathers, but only temporarily. As their group angled one way to begin the hunt, N’syn just hoped it would be a plentiful one.

Spoiler for OOC:
The Weyr needs fed! It’s time for another hunt, and this time it’s not so voluntary. You can read more about this event, and check in, at the OOC thread.

J’dan liked hunting. He was an active man and he enjoyed his place in Jungle Wing. The fact that there was some massive weyrwide hunt had him bristling though. It wasn’t like Beach Wing had any idea what they were really doing. They belonged where their namesake was. Literally on the damn beach.

Not that he was about to snub the hunt when his Wingleader and Wingseconds were expecting them to represent Jungle though. So he strapped up Brynioth and arranged himself in the weyrbowl near his dragon like a proper Bronzer – dressed in his leathers and waiting while everyone else figured out where they were going and who they were going with. Organized chaos.

Or just a mess of people doing things they shouldn’t be doing.

J’dan never the less climbed up on his dragon when he was told and they lifted off to go Between at the signal. At the end of the day, they were all Riders and if need be, he supposed they’d save the others from a Hunter if he had to.

K’eeda quite liked hunting. It was new and different. A change in the normal routine of fishing and net hauling. It was exhilarating going into the jungle and flying around, snatching at wherry from the air. Aeleroth certainly got a kick out of it. So when news reached them that they wouldn’t be joining the fishers on the beach but that they should gather in the weyrbowl with Jungle, K’eeda was right as rain and perky. Gearing to go.

Strapped checked twice over, K’eeda was on Aeleroth long before the others. Waiting for the rest of the Wing to gather up, get in position, and prepare for the entire mess. Some were nervous, some, like K’eeda, were eager.

When the signal went for them to go up and Between, K’eeda did just that. Aeleroth launched himself up and the cold darkness of Between was a rush. Especially bursting out of Between over the very green and vibrant jungle.

Time to go to work. At least this was fun.

Haithen would never get used to going to the Jungle. He was still new to Jungle. Months had gone by and he was still fresh to the Wing, but that didn’t make him any less determined to show that he could, and would, be a vital member.

Saissith too. So when it was time to go hunting with the others, Haithen felt the thrill of nerves tingle down his spine. Not only would he be hunting with his wingmates, but Beach as well. While he knew that not everyone was watching him, he still felt some added pressure. Like he was being watched.

He was trying not to be anxious, so he fiddled with his straps for something to do while he waited on the others to arrive. Checking and rechecking the leather he checked the night before.

It’s ok. We’ll do great, just like we always do. she cooed with the aim to calm her Rider. Haithen grinned at her, rubbed her shoulder, then climbed up onto the saddle. When the signal was given, they lifted up into the air and went Between with the rest of their Wing.

Coming up and out over the jungle was always a rush. So much green and life that just didn’t exist over the rest of Pern. Coming from Fort, it was beautiful and vibrant. It felt like enough vegetation and life, surely enough, that they could last however long. Could sustain the Weyr and Hall.

Now, though, it was time to hunt. Saissith thrummed, happy, before she dove into the jungle.

There were a few things that separated Nalata from the rest of her peers, things that reinforced the difference between her future role in the weyr and theirs. It was somewhat easier to ignore originally... she had extra lessons, of course, but it could be brushed aside as extra curricular, a not uncommon practice for many weyrlings. As Minath reached maturity and their lessons became more specific, however, the gap between herself and her classmates were getting larger. It had reached a point where Nalata felt as though what drills and lessons she attended with the rest of the class were purely for her benefit, called away to other duties whenever a lesson did not relate directly to her's, or Minath's own development and future role.

Times like this it became even more apparent. Along with other clutchmates, she had been allowed to assist in the hunt, by cleaning kills as they arrived. For other classmates it was potentially a glimpse into their not too distant future, particularly when some of the beach riders, and even jungle had gotten there right after weyrlinghood... But it wasn't a future she would share. It was a sobering realization, though one she had experienced many times before.

All thoughts for another day - perhaps some she could voice to A'lori that evening. Right now she would need to simply wait for the first batch of riders to return, prepared to assist wherever needed and not at all concerned about getting her hands a little (or a lot) bloody in the process.

Minath herself had found a sunny patch nearby to settle down in, close enough to observe her bonded but far enough away that she wouldn't be underfoot once the hunting wings returned. It was possible she may be asked to assist innweyrling drills or the like, but with Nalata occupied, or soon to be occupied, chances were she would be able to simply enjoy the sun while the weyr worked.

Minath is 40m long; 9m tall; 67m wingspan.

Tadriath stretched out in the sun a little more, lounging on the heights and observing the organised chaos gathering below with interest. J'ken wasn't much better, sprawled as comfortably as he could be while wearing riding straps, along his dragons neck. They'd volunteered to give a hand, it would have felt wrong just sitting on their ledge and watching, but neither of them were feeling up to a full hunt out in the jungle.

A moments distraction out their could lead to your death, or worse, a wingmates death. He yawned, stretching again as they waited. And that was why he was just hauling stuff. They were both still tired from a long and fruitless jaunt into the North. Not tired enough to compromise their flying, they'd fought thread while worse off than this. But a hunt wasn't thread. Not taking part wouldn't have such potentially dire consequences.

How long will they be?

“Depends what they find, I guess.”

Tadriath huffed out a long gust of breath and turned his attention back to the Weyrbowl. J'ken chuckled and slapped the soft hide under his hand. He agreed entirely - waiting was boring.

It didn't take long for H'riel to join the rest of his wing in the bowl, though when the news first broke that Beach Wing would be joining Jungle in the Weyrbowl he had needed to take a few moments to assess whether his preparation the night before would be adequate for the new assignment.

This will be a good opportunity for us. We will be able to see how well we fly with Jungle. Dwalath rumbled as H'riel settled himself into position, the rider tense with the uncertainty of what lay ahead. He was interested, of course, and understood that they were being called to join in so as to increase the food they would be able to bring back... but it's not like they'd flown with Jungle Wing before.

They'd been fully fledged riders for almost five months now, and he felt as though he was well suited to his position in the wing. The few weyrlings that had made it into the wing with him had given him some semblance of familiarity to ease him into it... Jungle wing was another level entirely.

Saissith and hers have managed it. Dwalath interrupted, reinforcing the sense that it was a good opportunity as he landed. And we'll have our wingmates with us as well. He added, though his attention was all for the Green dragon that had hatched the clutch before his. Had they been sunning themselves while their riders did drills, or otherwise free to socialise, the Brown would be asking all sorts of questions, both in preparation for his own maiden voyage to the Jungle, and to know just what Saissith had been doing since her wing placement.  Perhaps afterwards there would be time to catch up. He'd been rather occupied in getting to know his wingmates, that he'd altogether forgotten to enquire about the other rider's that had been part of his classes for nigh on three turns.

H'riel gave Dwalath a gentle stroke to acknowledge his words, breathing deeply before is attention focused outwards, to the other riders in the group he had been assigned to. He hadn't been late, though other beach riders had certainly managed to beat him there, which meant only a few more moments of uncertainty before they were being signaled to rise, and then, given order to go between.

H'riel shivered as they reappeared, this time above the bright, deceptively calm greenery that was the jungle proper, the fierce cold followed by the return of the almost stifling humidity, disconcerting. Trill and Chirp will be joining us. Dwalath warned quickly, the words immediately followed by the appearance of the green and blue firelizards, their own bubble of cool air dispelled quickly as they situated themselves on the saddle.

It was a testament to the work he'd put into training the two young flits that they did not cause a fuss, flattening themselves as much as possible as Dwalath angled his body with the rest of their group. H'riel had needed to make sure that the firelizards could be trusted to work in tandem with he and Dwalath, without the constant reinforcement that other flits may require. It meant he could trust them to disappear when things got dangerous rather than sticking around and trying to help, minimizing the possibility that H'riel may become distracted trying to protect them.. not to mention that helping may cause more harm than good.

Spoiler for OOC:

Iralye mounted up on Rallekath, barely stopping herself from wrinkling her nose at the foreign riders that had joined their ranks today. She might have been more tolerable if she'd only had to deal with Beach Riders who had crawled their way up from the sand today, but Prairie riders? Ugh. She wondered how many wherries they were going to lose today because of their entirely untrained wing members.

They were Jungle Wing for a reason, 'cause they trained to go into the Jungle each and every day, and get back out as well. Faranth forbid the Jungle should be overly dangerous today, because she wasn't sure she had it in her to keep her mouth shut when the foreigners realised they were completely out of their depth... That wasn't true, Iralye was a dutiful Jungle Green if she was anything, and no matter what happened she'd keep trap shut to make Jungle Wing look good.

Rallekath too was not entirely happy to be rubbing shoulders with so many women from other wings. She barely tolerated the competition of Jungle Greens and now she was supposed to try and deal with the other wings females as well.

With both women looking particularly haughty, they lifted with the rest of the wing as L'nal raised his arm, giving the signal to blink between. As their group alighted above a section of Jungle, Rallekath's lyrical voice with just a hint of edge sounded within her.

Ready to show them what Jungle Wing can do?

You bet. Poised and ready to undertake their typical flushing technique, the two waited eagerly for the signal to release.

T'veck let his eyes roam around the bowl, ignoring the riders forming up in favour of casting his eyes over the weyrfolk and other weyrlings setting up to one side. That would be where he was to head and he ducked around dragons and riders who were still getting ready to depart, Baleth trotting after him like a wher (he kept that thought very tightly controlled, his black bondmate would not appreciate the comparison).

He found an open spot, waving Baleth away to go find somewhere out of the way to sunbathe. Go relax, I'll call if I need you. The black swept his gaze around the Weyr bowl before approaching Minath and T'veck was pleased to hear him politely asking if he could join her. Apparently he was getting through to his dragon that demanding was rude and not likely to get him anything.

“Good morning.” He said absently to the person beside him as he started to roll his sleeves up so they would be out of the way. He was no stranger to hands on work, although butchering wasn't exactly his usual choice of past time. Still it had to be done, the weyr would fall apart if everybody refused to do the not so pleasant chores.

Jungle Wing’s doubts aside, things had been organized in such a way to minimize conflicts as much as possible. In the last few turns, the other Wings had incorporated some of Jungle’s strategies into their drills—for just such an occasion as this, as well as to combat the Hunters’ growing aggression. They could no longer afford for only one of the Weyr’s Wings to know how to fight the beasts, or at least avoid them. Jungle would always be the authority on the subject, the most experienced with the terrain their Wing was named after, but the Weyrleadership had not made this decision lightly.

So it was that Jungle’s best scouts ran point for the groups, keeping an eye on the canopy for any suspicious movement. The rest of the smaller dragons—Blues and Greens—were tasked with flushing out the wherry. Even for those from other Wings, this was a maneuver they knew, since every dragon needed to eat.

And those doing the flushing would drive the game upward, into the waiting talons of the larger Bronzes and Browns, who were far too big to fit in the space between the admittedly huge trees. As each group spread out to their assigned locations, those larger dragons took up their positions like the joins of a net, waiting for the other dragons to bring the hunt to them.

As always, keeping a watchful eye out as well. Things would only go smoothly if they all watched out for one another.

In the months since Haithen and Saissith’s graduation, N’syn and Tasuroth had tried very, very hard not to be overprotective of the pair. They were fully fledged riders now, even if they were young, and they’d taken to Jungle like fish to water. As far as N’syn knew, there had been no cause for real concern. The Wing leadership certainly wouldn’t have taken them right after graduation if there had been any doubt about their abilities.

But that didn’t stop them from worrying about their friends. They did with all of the Green and Blue riders they knew in Jungle, a sinking feeling in both their stomachs each time the pairs ventured beneath the canopy to scout, flush wherry, and distract Hunters when it was necessary. And as close as they had grown to Haithen, it was a particularly keen worry.

Neither of them wanted to see anything happen to the young Green pair.

But hovering like brooding Golds was uncharitable. As Saissith dove past the trees to search for game, Tasuroth took up his position in the net of larger dragons waiting to catch what she and the other Greens spooked for them. They weren’t in position to catch the first few wherry that flew up out of the trees, but another fluttering of wings rose up from beneath them, and the Brown nabbed them from the air with a practiced grab.

The hunt was starting well, at least. Hopefully that luck would hold.

L’ale didn’t like taking the other riders out on a hunt, but he understood it and he could certainly follow orders. So he didn’t voice any word of complaint as it was issued. Instead, he idly checked the straps of Illoth while the rest gathered up, glanced at his twin, then let his dragon translate his thought.

Illoth and L’ale would keep an eye on the newcomers to the hunt while L’nal led jungle in their normal hunts. With the decision made, L’ale made the announcement and had some of the volunteer newcomers gather near him.

Jungle launched first. It made sense that they’d arrive to make sure there wasn’t hunter activity already in the initial hunting area. Moments later, L’ale climbed up on his large bronze and indicated to those he would be leading that they should take to the sky, then go between.

Arriving over the jungle, L’ale had Illoth inform those that went with him that they would be waiting for wherry to be flushed out. Illoth took a position higher than the others to better survey the dragons and riders that had come with them. So that they might dive and intervene on their behalf if it were necessary. Just because they couldn’t see any hunters didn’t mean they wouldn’t leap out of the canopy after them.

He’d seen it happen. On that note, he had Illoth tell a couple of the waiting dragonpair to stay a bit higher over the canopy.

It was one thing to fly over the jungle canopy, it was quite another to dive into it. Saissith dove head first into the greenery and folded her wings along her lithe body so she could land on the jungle floor. Not for the first time, Haithen was thankful she was so very green, in dark and mottled shades that would make it difficult to see her from a distance.

If anything, Haithen was the one that stuck out.

Beneath the sheltering branches of the trees overhead, the jungle was still humid and sweltering. Sweat made his clothes sticky, but Haithen would deal with that later. For the moment, it felt like he was holding his breath while they both took a careful look around. Just to see if there would be a problem.

Hunters always came in greens and browns. Which meant, if a rider or dragon weren’t careful, they could easily overlook them. After a tense moment, Saissith started moving. Picking her way through the trees toward the chirping sound of wherry in the trees overhead while Haithen couldn’t help but keep an eye around them. If they were hunting wherry, it only made sense the hunters might be as well.

Hot days like this often drew them out.

Taking orders from the runt Weyrleader and his grotesque black dragon left a sour taste in M’kale’s mouth. He was in the group of Jungle riders who felt this command was an insult to their Wing to say that they weren’t doing well enough. Well, fine then. M’kale wasn’t about to turn down a hunt, especially not one with so much bait to draw out the Hunters. Jungle riders knew the best way to navigate the Jungle and catch the wherry. If he were a wild beast in the Jungle and saw riders flailing about in the air unsure of what to do, the newcomers would look like fresh meat to him too.

Then Jungle could take down a Hunter or two and bring that meat back to the Weyr. See what the little Weyrleader thought of how they collected meat then. Any casualties or fatalities of the other Wings would be on the brat’s conscience, not his.

With that decided, M’kale was already mounted on Hakurath in position and ready to fly with the other Jungle riders following behind L’nal. It was a shame that L’ale had so many of the newcomers following his lead. Neither of Jungle’s strong Wingseconds should be taken out of the hunt for babysitting. But that was almost half of Jungle’s job since living on this island, now wasn’t it?

The signal to rise and go Between was answered on point, the cold seconds passing in the blink of an eye before they were soaring over the Jungle. He and Hakurath watched as the Jungle greens and blues didn’t hesitate to dive and get to work. His gaze scanned the canopy tops, waiting for movement. There! Hakurath dove to the flying wherry, snatching its head in his jaws and jerking to the side once to feel the pleasurable snap of its neck.

Let the hunt begin.

While the order for this hunt would have ordinarily bothered Callista, she hadn’t seen sight or sound of complaint or disagreement from her ‘Seconds. So no one would hear from her either. It wasn’t her job to complain for them or whine like a child. It was her job to follow their command and the command of their Wingleader without question.

At the very least she was thankful she could participate this time around. Callista finished tightening Ariyath’s straps and climbed up where Hunter was already perched and waiting. The bronze flit had made himself useful in Jungle Wing in assisting her duties of finding and scaring the wherry up and out of the trees. He would prove even more useful today with everyone else around to make sure no one else was about to get in their way.

For those less experienced in this drill, collisions in the thick undergrowth while riding dragons were almost inevitable. Hunter would keep an eye out for them and direct both she and Ariyath out of any inexperienced rider’s path. L’nal gave the signa and they took off Between, emerging over the trees. They dropped into the trees, using their practiced speed and agility to navigate between trees and around branches before sweeping across the ground in search of wherry.

It didn’t take too long for a few to be spotted on the ground. The pair rushed toward them, forcing them upwards while Hunter took care to keep any from trying to slip around and back down. They were all going up, whether they wanted to or not. Once the wherries broke through the tree line, they dropped again, knowing the waiting Jungle riders of larger dragons would be waiting there to snatch them up.

K’mar surveyed the group of riders that had gathered for this hunt. Jungle and Beach had worked together before, but the addition of Prairie and Mountain volunteers made this the largest group yet. He prayed to Faranth this wouldn’t end in unnecessary casualties, either from overcrowded and inexperienced mistakes or from the presence of Hunters. The weather wasn’t a good sign either, since it seemed the Hunters liked the heat. Or, at least, were hot enough to venture outside of the Jungle in search of food.

Keep a sharp eye on everything, Ber. We can’t afford to let our guard down for a second today. I know, the brown rumbled. Even though there had been freshly graduated weyrlings in the past months, it still wasn’t enough to backfill all of those lost or too injured to fly anymore in the past Turn from Hunter attacks.

Fortunately, most of the newly graduated weyrlings weren’t present, with the exception of those who had gone straight to Jungle or Beach Wing. If they had the talent enough to make it to either Wing straight from graduation, then surely their being here would be more of a benefit than a burden of responsibility.

One of the Jungle Wingseconds—was it…L’ale? It was hard to tell them apart from here—motioned for the second group to rise and follow the first. It hadn’t slipped his notice that most of the Jungle and Beach riders were in the first group while the others were in this one. He was happier to be in this group, if that were the case, as he felt equally responsible as a Beach Wingsecond to keep an eye on some of the riders who had little to no experience in the Jungle. He couldn’t tell how far one of the Jungle riders would go for a non-Jungle rider if they felt someone was beyond saving.

We’re here to hunt, not sacrifice ourselves to Hunters. The deep, soothing voice of Berynth steadied K’mar’s thoughts. Of course, but when was our last successful time in the Jungle without the presence of Hunters? I’d rather be prepared than blind-sided. Before Berynth could respond, they were Between and it was time to get to work. They moved just over the treetops, waiting for a wherry or two to pop out of the canopy while also keeping attentive to any sound or warning that might indicate an unwelcomed guest to this hunting party.

Iralye fell easily into the focus of a hunt. Both together and separate from Rallekath as they kept four eyes lookout for signs of Hunters, wherry and anything else that was out of the usual.

There was no need for Iralye to speak aloud when she spotted the brief movement in the corner of her vision, as Rallekath was already diving towards the patch of wherry. The flock almost camouflaged with the brackish brown colouration of their leathery bodies. The two of them worked to drive the surprised wherries upwards, through the canopy of the trees and towards the riders waiting above.

It was an art form. Those greens that went into the Jungle to hunt. The greens had to rely on the element of surprise, as wherries had sharp talons that could take the eye out of a dragon that got too complacent. So instead, they waited for the wherries to get complacent, and before they even realised what was going on, the creatures would be in the talons of the larger dragons waiting above.

For all that, those that flushed were usually the first in contact with any Hunters lurking. But even after the attack at the Mine Hall, Iralye's eyes were no sharper than usual. She was always on guard, always doing exactly what she was supposed to do, no matter how dangerous it may be lately, she couldn't improve on "always".

Iralye had her hand injured at the Hunter attack. Given all clear 03.03.2590.

Most at the weyr would be thankful for a warm, sunny day. It meant good crops, fine grazing, and the chance to haul in some fish without the concern of beach snakes. Clear, sunny hot days like today were good omens for the weyr at large.

For those in Jungle, days like today were some of the worst. The Hunters liked the heat. Liked how it brought out the wherry to hunt and other jungle creatures to forage. Days like today, though the sky might be clear, the shadows beneath the canopy generally weren’t.

The jungle was a beautiful carpet of green from overhead. Branches reaching up into the sky, having survived thread to produce large, thick trees and an even thicker underbrush that trapped sweltering moisture. The jungle might be full of wherry, insects, and other smaller animals to support a vast, bustling ecosystem, but it also sported river snakes in the murky water of the sole river that twisted through it and Hunters than stalked through it.

It was always a Green Rider that noticed them first. Since they were in the jungle, amongst the thick trunks and dangling vines, they’d be the first point of contact. Screeching wherry would invariably draw the attention of the hungry creatures too.

It was definitely a good day for hunting. The dragon riders weren’t the only ones who thought so.

Three large Hunters were quick to converge on a location where wherry were being chased up into the canopy. Massive monsters, they cared little for the dragon rider – or they hadn’t noticed them right away – and they lunged up the trees and went straight for the panicked, fleeing wherry.

Spoiler for OOC:
Whichever Green Rider responds first can be the one to spot them. Enjoy. <3
