Current Month

9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Turns ago, A’lori never would have thought of himself as the extra training sort, except maybe for working on Weaver tasks even in his off time. Prior to being Searched, he’d thought that was his only passion—but Impressing to Queriluth had proved him wholly and totally wrong. Sure, he’d loved his Craft, and sometimes he felt sad that he couldn’t continue it, but there was no room for regret when his sweet Green was firmly welded to him, the other half of his soul.

It had been her suggestion, initially, that they aim for anything higher than Prairie. With all of her unshakeable confidence, Queriluth felt that they were destined for more. A’lori privately suspected that she’d been mulling over the idea because of her one-sided rivalry with Minath, but he was charitable enough not to directly accuse her of it. Nevertheless, she’d told him she would still be proud of him no matter what Wing they ended up in after graduation, looming so close on the horizon… but she still thought they had it in them to prove they were worth noticing.

A’lori had no idea if it would make a difference. Some of his classmates had been working overtime since Impression, but he’d always been a little more laissez faire with his time. That wasn’t to say he and Queriluth weren’t hard workers during drills and classes, but when they had time to relax? He vastly preferred to.

Her recent first Flight had put things into perspective a bit, though. And so A’lori had spent a lot of time thinking about where he could see himself in the future. As much as the jungle scared him, he didn’t think that Wing was for him either. And he knew better than to think he’d ever get into Mountain—that was reserved for riders with a certain kind of experience and drive, not to mention those who didn’t mind being isolated for long periods of time.

That certainly wasn’t A’lori.

Which left Beach or Prairie. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with Prairie, but he could see himself in Beach just as easily. And there was certainly no harm in trying for more; the worst he could do was fail. Maybe because he knew he’d still have Queriluth by his side regardless, the prospect didn’t really scare him. Most of his classmates would end up in that Wing anyway. There was no real shame there for him, no complex about whether or not his best would be enough.

But he came to agree with her that they should try. So after discussing it over the past few days, they’d agreed on a schedule of extra training in the evenings. There was certainly enough space in the Bowl, they could pick a spot and not really be in the way for anyone that also happened to wander outside.

They’d started with some aerial drills, practicing tight turns and twists and some more advanced maneuvers—A’lori having been inspired by Queriluth’s antics during her Flight. He felt a little silly doing them in the open air, but the thrill of gripping tight to the straps while she practiced such things eventually overtook that.

And when Queriluth had told him she wanted to take a break, they landed softly in the grass, the Green tucking herself against one wall of the Bowl while A’lori stretched and then ran some laps back and forth from one side to the other. He’d returned to her, leaning against Queriluth’s shoulder but facing away from the open area behind him—drinking from a waterskin hooked to her saddle and splashing some on his face—when she announced, Someone is coming.

He looked a mess, he was sure, dressed down just in pants and a loose, cool shirt with his flight jacket draped over Queriluth’s back, but he turned to greet them with a smile anyway. “Evening.”

Spoiler for OOC:
An open thread! 8D I sorta intended for there to maybe be another weyrling outside, if anyone’s interested in doing some joint-training, and I’m perfectly open to more than one no matter the age of their dragon. By the same token, if you have a character you really wanna toss in here regardless of what they are, feel free.

It had been almost a full month since Sokon's clutchmates had been given their own groundweyrs, and the ability to escape the sometimes overwhelming activity of the greater weyr was immeasurable bliss- for both rider and Dragon. Tasik was better able to visit them now, without Sokon worrying about his presence causing issues for any fellow weyrlings, and the rest of her family members too. Teeahn, of course, and Jyndith tended to be the most frequent visitors, but that wasn't a surprise to anyone.

It was almost enough to make you lose sight of the end game - to play at being a fully fledged rider, obligated to fulfill your wing duties and nothing more. But truth be told Sokon and Creath were still just another weyrlingpair, and had a great deal more growing to do yet.

Which is why they were out on the training field that evening. As per their standard routine, Creath had been holding her wings out, enjoying, almost, the familiar stretch that it caused. now that she could fly whenever she wanted, it was almost unnecessary, her wing strength not needing the extra nudge to minimise the chance of injuring herself. It was still a part of their routine, however, and they'd long ago expanded on their evening sessions to incorporate other areas they felt needed improvement. Some nights it meant flying, practicing their part in one of the drills D'zel or Wa'by had them working on. Other nights the training was a little more... intense.

I will only share once more tonight. Breath deeply. the green hummed tenderly before projecting a sense of intense cold on her rider, trying to dull down what she could hear and smell, and closing her own eyes so that she couldn't see. It was the best approximation of between the green dragon could do, based on Sokon's memories of her own jumps between and what Wa'by and Vicith had explained in lessons.

Sokon was settled into her riding straps on Creath's back, a piece of cloth covering her eyes, with smaller scraps stuffed into her ears and nose to try and approximate the lack of sensory stimulation caused by between. She would then embrace Creath's mind to further separate herself, while the dragon worked to further limit what input Sokon received, both of her own surroundings, and her mind.

It was somewhat distressing for both of them, Sokon not quite as panicky as she was when they first started practicing it, but still anxious enough to make things tense. Creath would wait until Sokon counted out the pause before letting everything come back in a rush, filling her rider's mind with what she could hear and smell and feel. By leaving the blindfold and other suppressants on, Sokon was able to get somewhat used to the situation, and except for their between approximation, Creath kept up a constant dialogue about what she could see - even if it was just counting dragons entering and exiting their weyrs.

It worked to strengthen their bond, and Creath was rather good at expressing her own limitations, uncomfortable with pushing Sokon too far when they did such drills in much the same way Sokon wouldn't let her push herself with her wing strengthening exercises. With that final exercise, Sokon removed the items being used to dull her senses, taking a deep breath of the fresh air and sighing as she exhaled.

Wordlessly, having already come to the understanding that they were both finished for the evening, the two of them started back accross the bowl, Sokon jogging ahead slightly while Creath did her odd hop-skip after her, flicking her wings to her side and letting the bulk of the sail rest on her back as she was taught.

Feel like some company? Sokon asked as she changed her course slightly, recognizing the Green dragon before she even saw the rider. Other green weyrlings, in her year group and otherwise were an... odd sort. For many, Sokon felt there was a sense of kinship and comeraderie, but for others it was more rivalry than anything else... When half the dragon population of the weyr (or more) were green, it sometimes got difficult to distinguish those who would happily chat, and those that would rather be left alone - but A'lori was unmistakably the former.

"Evening A'lori, Queriluth." Sokon returned the greeting with a smile of her own and a nod to the other green, noting the rather dishevelled appearance of the green rider and adding; "Are there more tests coming up?" The possible implication that A'lori wouldn't bother to train unless there was a reason for it only crossed Sokon's mind after it had been said, and her cheeks darkened slightly at the possible embarrassment... but she didn't correct herself, hoping instead that she hadn't offended the other weyrling.

Creath hummed a soft reassurancenin her head before finding her own part of the weyrbowl to sidle up against, rumbling a greeting to Queriluth without reaching for the other dragon's mind. She knew Queriluth well enough from lessons where they had needed to interact, and was under the understanding that a mental touch, even in greeting, would not be well met.

Spoiler for OOC:

A’lori still felt somewhat self-conscious about not looking his best, but much of it dissipated when he turned and was met by a fellow weyrling. Sokon wasn’t in his class, but he’d made a point of learning his classmate’s names even if he didn’t interact with them often. It was just his nature, he supposed, in being social and liking to know who was who of those around him. In many cases, he’d crossed paths with them in Candidate lessons, but there was a different sense of camaraderie among those who had Impressed.

In that, he also felt a certain kinship with fellow Green riders. Queriluth might not be a social dragon, prone to chatting as some were, but her sense of rivalry did not seem to extend to them. Minath was the exception to that rule—even during her oh so recent Flight, his Green lady hadn’t spared a thought for others of her color. There was simply no reason to be jealous of them.

So though he knew she wouldn’t reach out to Creath, it pleased him to hear her thrum a near-purr in response to the other dragon’s rumble. She was being friendly, if in her own way.

It didn’t enter into his head to be offended at Sokon’s question. Instead, A’lori just laughed. “When are there not?” The last months of weyrlinghood were proving to be littered with them, and keeping all the upcoming dates in his head was a test all on its own. He had the typical nervousness about not passing them, of course, but A’lori wasn’t deeply worried about it. He’d kept pace with the rest of his classmates, and had grown more confident as he learned alongside Queriluth.

He took another drink from his waterskin before sealing it again and raking some of his damp hair off of his face. Most of it was bound back in a braid, but some of it had come loose while he ran. “Are the two of you training for something, or are you just enjoying the evening?”

They were welcome company either way, but he couldn’t help but be curious.

The added training had paid off and Haithen had been accepted into Jungle. It was quite literally everything he had hoped it would be, and more. Though it was very, very tiring. All the extra training and pushing themselves for all the months of their training had proven to be necessary. Just so.

Looking back, Haithen almost wished he’d have done a little more. If that was even possible. One of the things he hadn’t even thought of, but that he appreciated the most, was the sheer comradery he found in a wing. Being mentored by another Green rider for his first couple of months, to teach him exactly what was needed, had been a whole different test, and one that had occupied their entire lives. Even so, Haithen had felt… really a part of something bigger. A part of the Weyr. Training to become a Rider, he’d never really understood what that meant until he’d started flying with Jungle Wing.

Now, he didn’t feel like they had to spend their evenings training. They were pushed hard enough during the day. Instead, Haithen wandered out with Saissith so they might enjoy the evening and he could oil some dry spots in the weyrbowl.

It was during oiling one of her wing joints that Saissith pointed out the other dragons training. Not in so many words, but she nudged him with her snout. Haithen smiled a little, feeling a touch nostalgic, before he pushed at her nose. They were like us, she cooed.

He nodded a moment before rubbing at another dry spot. //I mean, they might be practicing some sort of drill.//

You should ask. N’syn helped us. she suggested softly. He understood what she was getting at, but even so he hesitated. Wouldn’t it just be weird to wander over and interject himself in their conversation? They might just be messing around.

Saissith snorted a little, amused, and added, Did you do extra laps for fun?

//Yeah, yeah. I get your point.// Then, because it was only fair, Haithen thought, //If I have to be social, so do you.//

His shy, sweet green hadn’t really come out of her shell, so to speak, just because they’d joined a wing but there were a couple of dragons in Jungle Wing that she’d become fond of. Saissith would never be a chatty creature and Haithen was fine with that, but if she would insist he be so, hen he was dragging her along.

That seemed to give her pause before she stood, flared her wings a little, and started walking over to the other two greens. Haithen would’ve thought it was a confident strut save she held her head low, as she usually did when meeting new dragons. Good evening, she thought softly to Queriluth and Creath. She didn’t get too close either, respecting both lady’s personal space while giving herself some.

Haithen had to walk quickly to keep pace with his Green, but he waved a little as he approached the other two. “Hey. I saw you flying. Practicing drills?” This was directed to A’lori, since that’s the only one he’d seen. After which, he added, with a small smile, “I’m Haithen.”

Spoiler for OOC:

Imma just jump in here. Dun mind me.

Since A’lori was a chatty sort that appreciated socialization and gossip, he knew of many of the weyrlings that had been in the classes before him, even if they’d never interacted. He wouldn’t go so far as to say he’d recognize them on sight, but, well—this one was a special case. Who hadn’t heard of the one weyrling that had graduated straight into Jungle at the end of last turn? Despite himself, A’lori straightened some, eyes going wide as he spotted Haithen over Sokon’s shoulder just a moment before the graduated Green Rider arrived.

He’d never been quite brave enough to approach her, self-conscious in a rare way, but A’lori couldn’t help but admire Haithen. Their builds were similar, and the fact that she’d not only kept up with her classmates but exceeded them… it had been a source of inspiration for A’lori when he’d been struggling with the conditioning at the beginning of weyrlinghood. Queriluth herself had encouraged it, knowing that her rider needed reassurance about the more physical side of their training.

So this was, well… wholly unexpected, and enough to make the usually socially-graceful A’lori feel awkward. Shards, but he was all sweaty and dressed down—and there was no way to hide that or spruce himself up. She’d already arrived. A’lori just hoped his lack of polish wouldn’t be held against him.

He might not fully want to admit that he was about to meet someone he looked up to oh so much, but Queriluth knew without him saying anything at all. And it was for that reason that she didn’t recoil when the older Green reached out to her. This was important… and for A’lori she would make an exception. So when Saissith greeted her quietly, Queriluth responded with a gentle, Hello.

A'lori himself stammered out a less confident, "H-hey," and then nodded, feeling foolish all the while. "Yeah... wanted to do some extra for Wing placements..." Shards, he sounded stupid. Mustering a smile, he added, "It's nice to meet you. I'm A'lori."

Spoiler for OOC:
Edited// cause I didn't select the whole post out of Word. XD

I wonder what Haithen would think if she knew A’lori idolized her so much? :bird:

Sokon laughed at A'lori's statement, adding "More for me to look forward to then," before her attention shifted to his next question. They had long since stopped needing the extra strength traininng, but there was something comforting in the familiar routine. Being so open about the other aspect of that evening's training was not something that came easily, so she simply responded "We enjoy the extra work, and the weather's good for it."

She was sure Queriluth had flown recently, though it was hard to keeo track of all the greens in the weyr and they didn't have quite the same effect on her as the Gold's. She was musing on whether to find out what his experiences of between had been like when another joined their conversation, causing Sokon to step back and dip her head in greeting.

"Haithen?" Sokon piped up, surprise in her voice as she connected the name to the rider who's achievement at their graduation ceremony had quickly gained an almost legendary status. "Of Jungle Wing?" She added before she could stop herself, trying not to blush entirely at such an outburst.

She nodded at A'lori's words, introducing herself once he'd finished speaking. "I'm Sokon. It's lovely to meet you-" Sokon managed not to let the words in person slip out and offered a small smile of her own, though adding nothing more to the conversation.

Creath's mind was ever present in Sokon's own, however she withdrew some to pay mind to the older green that joined them. Hello. She thrummed in response, happy that Saissith didn't feel the need to get closer than necessary. It was comforting being able to claim her own space, and she always enjoyed the presence of a dragon that didn't try to encroach.

She was content to simply enjoy the company beyond the greeting, though the dragon would not turn away further conversation. Creath rather enjoyed the proximity of the others, though, and regarded both greens with polite interest.

Haithen didn’t think of himself as special and certainly didn’t think anyone would recognize his name, let alone who he was by his placement at graduation. There were others that had been placed in a wing besides Prairie, so it didn’t occur him to have a big head about it. There wasn’t much of a reason and, besides, he was far too busy with all that there was still left to do.

It was certainly an achievement, of course, but it was Haithen’s achievement. Why would anyone else care except the few people in his life that he considered friends or more?

So the stammered greeting from A’lori didn’t seem all that out of place. Not everyone was suave and charismatic at first ‘hello’, Haithen included. Let alone his often demure dragon. He also smiled a little at Sokon and nodded to confirm her own question of ‘jungle wing’.  To hear that they were training for Wing placements, though, well that was something he could relate to. Showing an interest and attempting to be friendly, Haithen asked, “What Wing are you training for?”

Saissith, true to form, was not the chattiest of dragons. While she would always encourage Haithen to be social and interact with others, she frequently was unsure how to do it herself. It wasn’t because the other Greens intimidated her, or she didn’t like them, it was more because she didn’t want to be a bother and felt she had nothing interesting to say. While she was attentive, and receptive to conversation, she didn’t have much to offer.

Though he knew there was no real shame in ending up in Prairie, and Beach worked just as hard as Jungle even if many in the Weyr didn’t think so, A’lori still felt somewhat self-conscious at Haithen’s question. “Beach,” he replied, and cut himself off so that he didn’t end up blurting out all the reasoning behind that. He didn’t expect her to really care strictly speaking, even if she might say so to be polite. And since he did feel uncharacteristically awkward, A’lori didn’t particularly want to exacerbate that feeling.

Sensing his unease, Queriluth leaned her head down briefly and nosed gently against his shoulder. Along with it, she sent a flood of reassurance that she could easily tap into, believing the best of her rider and having her own quiet confidence as well. As physical as she was, though, she often paired such things with touches to him if they were within reach of one another.

Then, because he was curious and couldn’t stop himself, A’lori asked, “Was there any particular training you found most helpful once you graduated?” It was a little bit of a non-sequitur, since Haithen herself wasn’t in Beach Wing, but he still valued her opinion. And as such as recent graduate, he thought she would have some insight that would differ from that of an older rider.
