9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Feel free to say hello, guesties! Registered members can request a colored name here.

this holds no IC consequence and is only for fun.

Hello and Welcome!

While we feature 2 new mutations, we stick pretty close to canon. We've Ranks, roles, and positions for just about anyone who wants to get involved, with a relaxed community. Play and post at your own pace. Swing by and say hello!

Southern Winds uses a subaccount system to distinguish between Players and their Characters. So REGISTER with your Player Account Name and the admin will assign you your Character Subaccount once your character is approved!

Southern Winds is a Mature Roleplay. This means we allow for sexual, violent content that would be found in a struggling, 9th Interval Pern. Sex is common place in the Weyr and terrible deaths are no stranger here. As such, our players should be 18+. These themes are to be handled maturely at all times.

Regards,
Southern Winds Weyr

Blood and Guts [ 30.4.2591; 5:05 AM ] || Event
« on: July 19, 2018, 10:01:29 PM »
The rain from the night before hadn’t dissipated yet, making the Bowl a muddy mess near the well-trafficked areas more devoid of grass. The ground was soft, squishy enough that it felt spongy to walk on, but at least the rainstorm had cut out some of the heat otherwise settled over the island. There was no brilliant sunrise either, as the grey sky shielded it with clouds.

Things were quiet at first as the Herders made their way to the pens and small barn housing their livestock. Nothing seemed out of place, beyond some of the herdbeasts shifting a little restlessly as they huddled under the overhangs shielding them from the drizzle; but there was no sign of skycoursers making their way over the lip of the Bowl. Perhaps the early-morning movements of some dragons had spooked them?

The first few on the scene made the discovery as they stepped into the barn. Another Herder was crumpled on the dirt and straw, head bloodied from where they’d been knocked out cold. Their wher lay nearby, profusely bleeding ichor—still alive, but breathing only with difficulty.

There was a call for the Healers then—one for the human and one for the wher—and an apprentice bolted across the slick grass to retrieve the medics from their Hall. No sooner had they left than the heavier, thick scent of blood drew others to one of the stalls near the back of the barn.

What they found there was even worse. The floor and walls were awash with clotting and drying blood, which had been tracked out onto the straw. What little mangled remains of the runner had been left behind—mostly internal organs that couldn’t be easily cooked, and the glassy-eyed, slack-jawed head—were piled in the middle of the stall from where it had been butchered.

Hunger stalked the Weyr, and it had just turned violent.

Spoiler for OOC:
The plot thickens! We’ve deliberately left the identity of the knocked-out night guard vague, and whoever wants to claim that particular role is free to do so with an IC post.

As always, you can check in to the event at the OOC thread if you do not want to post.

Their family’s motivation to move to the Hall had been for political rather than practical reasons. If ever some of the Herders split off to the base of the mountain with a select few herdbeasts, Kindolin knew that she and her family would travel to the Weyr much less often. But for the time being, more often than not she stayed the night away from the Hall.

Ryneppa and Oppesine were more at home there, with the resurgence of back-tunnel wher fighting and some other gang-related activities. But as much as Kindolin missed those things too, she was patient. Her time would come. And until then, she was happy helping the Herders, some of whom she’d known her whole life. Unlike some, she had no issue with hard and dirty work.

So long as she could take a bath at the end of the day, that was all she asked.

Rising early was a long-ingrained habit, and she did so like clockwork even though there was no natural lighting in her small room to indicate the coming of the dawn. Dolinsk was getting too big to simply lift off of her lap, so she had to coax the Blue to shift aside from where he’d settled atop her in sleep. Kindolsk himself was curled on the floor at the end of the bed, though he cracked one eye as his handler stood and moved about the room to freshen up for the day.

The shirt she ultimately chose was sleeveless, a little airy in preparation or a day of heat and sun. Her trousers clung close to her legs, tapering and making it all the easier to fit them into her reinforced boots. They were a relic from Fort Hold that she prized—reinforced with steel in the toe to protect against the weight of a herdbeast if they were to step on her feet. And as Kindolin tied her hair back and out of her face, she whistled lowly to her bonded creatures.

They fell into line then—even Dolinsk, who had learned her system of commands quickly—her two whers exiting the room in her wake and Wherry settling gently on her shoulder, looping his tail around her upper arm rather than digging his claws in.

There would be time for breakfast later, the Herders and Farmers often taking it in shifts since they rose so early. So the little group made their way out of the residential tunnels and into the growing sunlight in the Bowl.

Something seemed off from the beginning, as they drew closer to the Herders’ pens and barn. Kindolin could see a group of Crafters gathered outside the structure, but they weren’t moving in the familiar ways of the morning—feeding the animals, cleaning up from the night before, or carrying buckets to refill water troughs. Quickening her pace, she ended up loping across the grass, Wherry taking to the air to investigate and her whers trotting behind her.

One Herder was sitting outside the barn, leaning against it and surrounded by other Crafters while someone in a Healer’s colors was asking them questions and tending to their bloodied head. The door to the barn was open, and though the interior of it was too shadowy to see into, Kindolin could smell it—the thick stink of blood, and ichor too.

A low, rumbling growl started vibrating deep in Kindolsk’s throat, and she absently set one hand on his head, Dolinsk shrinking against her legs in uncertainty. Curious, and with an already sinking sensation of anger simmering inside her, Kindolin approached one of the Herders at the edge of the crowd and tapped them on the shoulder. “What happened?”

Spoiler for OOC:
Here’s an opening for anyone who wants to post. 8D Kindolin would be a familiar sight around there, even if they don’t know each other personally.

Elrost had already dove in to the fray and learnt all he could about the situation, but when the crowd had started to build, and other loud voices had brought themselves forward Elrost had slipped to the side of the crowd to observe until he felt necessary to intervene. Besides, he was no use to the Herder once the Healer had arrived, and no use to the runner from the beginning.

He turned at the tap on his shoulder to see a familiar face. "Kindolin." He greeted, pulling her away from the crowd slightly and speaking softly. Elrost wasn't trying to hide anything from anyone else, but putting things in words sometimes further incited a crowds anger. Those that were standing still in a little shock could likely be shook into more anger with an... absolute reflection of what was in front of them.

"Someone came through in the night. Knocked out of the night guard," he gestured towards the Herder being tended, "and slaughtered a runner. Butchering it for, presumably, food." His face turned grave, thinking briefly of how easily it could have been him, Ellsk, Sensk and Harrier on the shift. "The wher is gravely injured as well."

Harrier's head curled up from inside his shirt, where the Gold had made her new hiding spot. She'd never been self-conscious of her ugly colouration, but the devastation the Skycourser had made of her wings was a different story all together. Her now ugly wings were a result of her own failure. Definitely aware of the simmering anger deep inside of Elrost, she added her own disapproval to his thoughts. The creatures were her charges too.

That Elrost pulled her to the side instantly made Kindolin all the more suspicious. Not of him, but the entire situation—if it had been something as simple as the injured Herder getting kicked in the head by a runner, there would be little need for discretion and muted conversation. The burning fingers of anger crept further up her throat, reflected in her Brown wher as his growl deepened. Though he followed her, his attention was still on the barn, where he could smell that something was wrong.

And as Elrost explained, her expression grew dark, the line of her mouth growing tense as she pursed her lips. All of this was so… fucking familiar. Shit like this was the reason that her family had started getting a little more physical with the other gangs in the first place. Though they weren’t Herders themselves, the Crafthall was important to them, just as its animals and its people were. The only reason they had stopped being quite so stringent about helping to guard the beasts was because, well, they were in a damn Weyr. If the animals were going to be safe anywhere, it should have been there.

This wasn’t her fault, or her family’s. Kindolin knew that, but it didn’t stop her anger. The sense that if they hadn’t grown lax, the situation would have ended differently. Any attackers would have gotten more than they bargained for if they’d thought to get the jump on her, or Ryneppa, or even Dolynsine.

Dolinsk was still pressed against her legs, eyes whirling a concerned yellow. Kindolsk’s were a deep, deep red. Looking down at them both, their handler took a moment to gather her thoughts before asking the next most pertinent questions. “Was anyone caught? Or do we know who did it?”

Though she would not say so aloud, Kindolin hoped it was the latter, but not the former. Whoever the perpetrator was, they would have much more to worry about from her and her family than whatever justice the Weyr would decide was best.

Remira and her brother had moved to the Hall when it seemed he’d needed something to do with himself. It wasn’t like the Hall didn’t need a Herder or two to tend to their small population of chickens and rabbits, so she’d happily volunteered to be shipped off. But she still had to make appearances back at the Weyr for some classes and duties.

It was just being part of the Crafthall. She loved her work and equally loved tending to the animals. Minus all the shit. She hated that.

The night guard was really a formality. It might’ve been necessary when they’d first moved, but that seemed so far away and another world entirely from the semi-lax way things had become now. So when the assignment had been dolled out, Remira had opted to do that too. It seemed like a nice opportunity to spend the evening practicing with Irask. The brown wher was getting bigger and bigger – though he wasn’t quite an adult yet and any opportunity to practice commands seemed like a good one.

How awful could tending the barn at night really be? The most trouble Remira really expected was for Aly to be upset she’d not returned to the Hall that evening.

Good. She liked it when he missed her.

Irask had reacted to the strangers first, but by that time Remira was knocked out and everything else was just... Black.

Coming to, the first thing that registered was pain. Whether it was hers or Irask’s, she couldn’t immediately tell. Remira flailed, quickly recalling she’d been attacked but calm, soothing, familiar voices registered that wasn’t happening anymore. The first words out of her sore, raw throat were, “How’s Irask?” Was the pounding of her head because she’d been hit or was that because she couldn’t really feel her wher?
