Current Month

9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

Welcome!

Hello and Welcome!

http://southernwindsweyr.net/Images/news icon copy.png We are a mature, 9th Interval AU Pern. We've destroyed almost the entire planet in a catastrophic event. While we feature 2 new mutations, we stick pretty close to canon. We've Ranks, roles, and positions for just about anyone who wants to get involved, with a relaxed community. Play and post at your own pace. Swing by and say hello!

Southern Winds uses a subaccount system to distinguish between Players and their Characters. So REGISTER with your Player Account Name and the admin will assign you your Character Subaccount once your character is approved!

Southern Winds is a Mature Roleplay. This means we allow for sexual, violent content that would be found in a struggling, 9th Interval Pern. Sex is common place in the Weyr and terrible deaths are no stranger here. As such, our players should be 18+. These themes are to be handled maturely at all times.

Regards,
Southern Winds Weyr

Keeping a Watchful Eye [ 02.05.2591; 4:00 PM ] || Oarlen

Seng could barely stand still, fussing with Forrikenth’s straps as they waited. They’d been thrilled when the Candidate Master had assigned them their first student to mentor, and now they were determined to do even better the second time. They had taken W’um’s advice to heart, and couldn’t wait to meet and get to know their next Candidate.

There was still a bit of nervousness about it all—what if the student didn’t like them? What if they said something wrong? But before those thoughts could really spiral, Forrikenth was rumbling a laugh in Seng’s head and leaning down to nose at their hair. You worry too much. How could anyone not like you?

“Just because you like me doesn’t mean everyone will.” Nevertheless, Seng was smiling as they finished checking their dragon’s straps for the umpteenth time. “But thank you.”

There’s nothing to thank me for, the Blue told them phlegmatically, shifting a little once Seng had hopped down from his shoulder. I believe in you.

“Well… fine.” They caught themselves before repeating the thanks, feeling an amusedly quizzical sensation from Forrikenth that they had always likened to a knowing grin or a raised eyebrow. Somewhere in between. As with many things about the telepathic bond, it was difficult to describe. “Do you see him yet?”

Maybe? The Blue craned their head forward as though that would help him peer across to the other side of the Bowl. Hot as it was, the air nearly seemed to ripple with the heat over the grass—and Seng was thankful that their duties for the day would take them and their assigned Candidate not only out over the water, but up in the air where an errant breeze might further cool them. I do see someone coming.

O’sir had given them a brief description, as well as the Candidate’s name, to identify them by when they were to meet. And as the boy approached, Seng agreed with his dragon that this was probably him. The flock of flits was a clue too, and Seng’s own perked up curiously from where they were draped over Forirkenth’s back, neck, and one wing.

Smiling, the Blue rider waved the newcomer and his faire over in their direction. And once they were close enough—“You’re Oarlen, right? I’m Seng.”

Spoiler for OOC:
@Kyya I came up with a thing. 8D I figured Oarlen could accompany them while they keep an eye on the Cove from above, since Oarlen will be out of harm’s way there and they can talk a bit too. Just let me know if there’s anything that needs changing.

To say Oarlen was excited to officially meet his mentor was an understatement, and the days chores and refresher lessons in light of the recent clutch had been tackled with a nervpus energy that amplified his usual fidgety nature. He always anticipated impressing each clutch, and couldn't hide the tang of disappointment when he wasn't picked, but O'sir's belief in his ability to impress and his own certainty that he should helped to create a sense of confidence in himself. It wasn't cocky, but he wasn't going to shirk his commitment to his role as a candidate just because it was taking longer to impress for him than some others. O'sir had assured them on numerous occassions that you were more likely to stand for multiple hatchings before your dragon chose you than just one.

Still. There was only so much attwntion he cpuld offer to the refresher classes that preceeded the first clutch of the year, and only so many things to be done to teach you the basics of a craft, should you endup leaving candidacy to pursue that instead... and while he held no ill will towards the crafters of the weyr, he truly wanted to be a rider himself, and help defend the weyr from the threats that still plagued them despite thread's absence.

So when the candidate master had assigned him his very own mentor. Well. First impressions mattered and today was as important as if Kalestath's clutch started to hatch. It wouldn't be quite the same as having his very own dragon. But it was better than just learning about them and the role riders took in the weyr. Firelizards and wher's may be similar in many ways to the larger beasts, but it wasn't quite the same.

But for now... first impressions.

The small gap between their afternoon class and their four o'clock assignments was just enough time for Oarlen to clean up. giving his faire a quick spot oil before he was darting for the weyrbowl. Freckles attached himself to one arm while Sweets wrapped around the other, smaller than his brown brother and able to perch somewhat easier on the slight frame. Queen had attempted to attach herself to his back, but her weighg would slow him down and he'd rather politely requested she fly to their destination instead. Canopy was only too happy to stream behind Oarlen, keeping close enough to clearly be attached to him without smothering him - and Queen stuck close to her as well. A less serious moment and Oarlen would have appreciated, yet again his luck. Four firelizards... and despite Canopy's penchant for shouting at everyone, they were four well trained flits that anyone could be proud of!.

Instead, he focussed on the dragons in the 'bowl, since they'd be easier to spot than their riders in many cases. O'sir had  done his best to describe the blue pair, but with so many blue's in the weyr and not quite enough time to memorise them all, Oarlen was stuggling to find what had been described. It was the interest from the blue followed by a flash of smaller creatures that drew Oarlen's attention to who he suspected was Seng and Forrikenth, and he picked up his pace, Coming to a stop a respectful distance befoee offering both rider and dragon a polite bow.

"That's right. Thankyou for agreeing to mentor me. I look forward to working with you." he started, working to slow his words down so as to do it properly. "These are my flits, Canopy, Freckles, Sweets and Queen. Are they able to accompany us? They are well trained"

He stood up straighter as he said that, pleased as each flit trilled a greeting when their name was spoken and hoping that the volume of Canopy's wasn't too distracting for the rider, or his own faire. He didn't quite give Seng a chance to respond before he was bowing again, for Forrikenth alone this time. "Good afternoon to you as well Forrikenth. You look healthy and well cared for."

Flattery seemed accepted by the few greens he'd had the pleasure of meeting, but he didn't feel as though calling a Blue dragon "pretty" would be as acceptable... particularly when he knew nothing much at all about this particular blue. So health and care seemed a good thing to comment on. The fact he hadn't been introduced to Forrikenth went forgotten in his excitement. O'sir had told him the name of both rider and drahon after all... And he'd have felt rude pretending he didn't know the blue's name.

"I'm very excited to meet you both" he finished with a grin, practically bouncing as he waited to see what was in store. He was prepared to dismiss his flits if needbe, though with the sight of the three lounging on tbe dragon, there was some hope that they'd be able to join them Otherwise he'd just regale them with a full recount when he got back.

It was all so very exciting, really.

Seng was still relatively young themselves, but it was at times like this that they were reminded just how much the experience of being a rider could add to someone’s life. Oarlen might appear particularly young, but he was still an adult. Still a Candidate in his own right, and maybe sometime soon a weyrling too—which would make him a rider at a young age too. Seng could see how it might be easy to end up seeing a mentored Candidate like this as a little sibling: but would that really be appropriate?

He pushed that train of thought away for the moment to focus on the introduction instead. Oarlen certainly seemed polite, and his thorough greeting prompted another smile from the Blue rider. “Sure, they can come along. That many more pairs of eyes will be better for what we’re doing anyway.” He gestured to the curious flits now peering down at Oarlen and his faire from their perches on Forrikenth. “My two Bronzes are Heron and Skycourser, and the Green is Sparrow.”

Normally Seng wouldn’t have introduced them, but with the fact that the Candidate had done so for his, it seemed to Seng like it would be impolite not to extend the same courtesy.

Amused, Forrikenth rumbled a noise in response to the boy as well. Thank you. His voice, loud as ever with little to modulate its telepathic intensity, boomed into Oarlen’s mind like the loud clanging of a bell.

“It’s nice to meet you all,” Seng continued, absently tapping their gloved fingers against their thigh. “We’re going to be on patrol duty for today—watching the Cove to make sure nothing is lurking around.” It was a serious assignment, but it was bound to be a bit fun for the Candidate too, since it meant they were going to be adragonback for the afternoon.
