Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

A Tentative Friendship [ 11.1.2591; 7:30 PM ] Daysa
« on: August 02, 2018, 07:20:12 PM »
During his life, Erieen had learned how to be patient. It wasn’t a trait he would particularly use to characterize himself, but it was a useful skill he could summon up when needed—which was all the more to his benefit given Sayimith’s energy and constant drive to be moving, or doing something. Eventually, whether she admitted it or not, she would grow tired enough to sleep. All he had to do was wait for her to tire herself out.

Which also meant that being in the Bowl during the evenings was pretty standard even before he’d met Daysepona. It had worked out nicely that she would be willing to meet him out there again, and Erieen had applied his patience to that, too. Everyone in the Weyr was busy in their own ways. He’d just have to wait until her schedule allowed her the free time.

He was looking forward to it, whenever it did happen. It was a strange new feeling, given his usual (and typically warranted, in his opinion) suspicion of other people. Previously, C’ace was the only person he’d ever believed didn’t have ulterior or self-serving motives. But as wrong as he knew it was to judge someone’s dangerousness on appearance alone, he didn’t think Daysepona was malicious. She had seemed, simply, nice.

You worry about weird things, his dragon told him, pausing to glance his way as she chased bugs in the grass. If you want to be her friend, just be her friend.

//It hasn’t always been that simple.// And he couldn’t help but smile a little, and added teasingly, //And what do you know about being friends? You barely notice other people.//

You’re my friend. And it is that simple. Sayimith snorted to express her rejection of the idea. I saw you, and decided you’d be mine.

//It’s not quite the same way with humans.//

Good. No one else gets to claim you but me. She trotted over to where he was sitting with his legs folded, and nosed against his shoulder and neck with a thrum. You’re my best friend, and I’m yours. But I don’t mind if you make other ones.

Moss tended to behave better after she’d had some time to exercise. With M’kale’s hesitant blessing, Daysepona was given leave to take her flits for… well, a walk. He was going to tend his dragon, gear, and the like that riders still needed to do. That would give her plenty of time to wear Moss out and, hopefully, there would be a familiar shape in the weyrbowl that could help out with that.

She hadn’t really told M’kale about Erieen. Right now, there didn’t really seem to be a point. A tentative friendship wasn’t really much to mention, especially when it was more about Moss getting someone to play with. The less she talked about Moss, the better.

Moss was like a little kid. She found excitement in everything and kept Daysa on her toes. While she could be endlessly frustrating, Daysa was still incredibly fond of the little green. If she wasn’t bothering other people, Daysepona actually found her antics quite entertaining. And, every once and awhile, Moss did try to be helpful. Though the flit certainly enjoyed twirling in the air and trilling sweetly than trying to help Daysa in her various chores.

Moss led the way out into the weyrbowl, her tiny body darting ahead but not so far as to really leave Daysepona behind. Guard trotted on the ground next to her since he was too big to comfortably cling to her but he wanted to remain close. Games weren’t really his forte but he liked staying with her and keeping an eye on Moss.

When Moss caught sight of her little red friend, she impressed upon Daysa the image of Erieen and zoomed off at him and his dragon. Daysa didn’t rush after, but she did walk just a little faster.

As much as Sayimith hated sitting still, Erieen appreciated that she did when she felt he needed reassuring. Her expression of such wasn’t always physical, but he liked when it was—especially since he knew that someday, she’d probably be too big to really do so anymore. As small as she was now, and probably would be when she was grown, she was still a dragon after all. She’d absolutely tower over him in not too long.

But the moment passed when she sensed someone else approaching, turning her head to see who it was. And as a little Green shape darted toward her, Sayimith trilled happily and bounded toward Moss with a bright, Hello!

It wasn’t hard to follow the direction she’d come from, and Erieen waved to Daysepona when he caught sight of her. But he didn’t bother to stand—figuring she’d join him in the grass today since they’d arranged to let their respective bonded play with one another for a while. Ideally, she wouldn’t have to leave nearly as quickly as she had last time.

“Hello,” he said once she was close enough, in an echo of his dragon’s greeting. “How are you today?”

Rather than echo the greeting back in so many words, Moss simply trilled again and darted around the little Red’s head. She impressed upon Sayimith that she was pleased to see her and then landed on her back. By comparison, Moss was just so... so very small. The green firelizard was already small compared to people. It didn’t matter that Sayimith herself was still small. Then, unable to wait much longer, Moss bounced up Sayimith’s neck and along her snout before flapping off. Chirping the whole while in the hopes that they might play as they had before. Guard was always too serious to actually play with her, though the Bronze would chase her. It was never for the reasons that Moss wanted him to.

Daysepona smiled at the dragon rider and slowed her approach. A bit anxious, but she tried not to let that show. She was always the worst at interacting with people. Feeling inadequate and frequently stumbling over her own words. Guard, having walked alongside her, watched Erieen warily but he wouldn’t mind the other man so long as he didn’t upset his bonded.

Well, any more than she could upset herself.

After a moment, Daysa folded her skirts under her legs and did sit nearby. “Ah. I’ve been fine. Just working, much like normal. What about your day? I honestly have no idea what your day is like.”

Sayimith thrummed happily at Moss, completely unperturbed that the Green ‘greeted’ her by passing along her emotions instead. And when the flit landed on her back, the Red simply craned her head back to watch her tiny friend with quickly-whirling green eyes, her excitement evident. And when Moss practically skipped up her neck and down her face, Sayimith rumbled an undulating noise not unlike a laugh. If only other dragons were as eager to play as the Green was!

But she wouldn’t waste time on such longing—especially not when she had a friend to play with in this moment!

Tail flicking behind her, Sayimith bounded after Moss, fully intending to pick up their game as though there had been no days-long break in it. The sentiment made Erieen smile some in her direction. If only making and keeping up with friends was as simple for humans as it seemed to be for dragonkind.

More relaxed as Daysepona sat, with both of them at a respectful distance from one another, he idly picked at some of the blades of grass. “Work never seems to end, hmm?” Hopefully she wouldn’t think he was being patronizing. Erieen glanced at her then. “The training is exhausting a lot of the time. Not that I’d trade it for anything.” He couldn’t help but remember how he had felt, prior to Impressing and even prior to being Searched. “I can talk about it, if you like. But I don’t want you to think we only have to talk about me, or even about rider things.”

He knew what it felt like to be overlooked. No matter that he did have a dragon now, Erieen was determined not to forget that. Even drudges deserved to have people show interest in their lives—especially drudges, in his opinion.

Time was an odd thing for fire lizards. Their memory seemingly perfect and their age so long, Moss really didn’t have a concept of days being a real extended period of time. So, for her, the game might as well have picked up right where they left off with a brief intermission. She chirped and trilled encouragement, dipping and diving – sometimes even running – while she played their game of tag. It sent a nice, warm feeling through the bond to Daysa, and prompted a small smile to cross her face.

At his remark, she nodded a little. “Farming, cooking... Every day things that must need done,” she said with a shrug of one of her shoulders. Guard climbed on her lap, still watching Erieen warily. When he clarified they didn’t have to talk about it, Daysa laughed a little. “I don’t really mind. My days are pretty much a lot of the same thing, so it’ll be nice to hear about something different.” Which was largely true. No one wanted to hear about the different things that were cooked, how it was done, because it just wasn’t interesting. Not even to Daysa. It was just a thing that needed done, so she did it. Same as the weeding and tilling of the farmland. It wasn’t an interesting chore, but it was something she did because it was needed.

The only thing in her life that might be worth talking about was M’kale and... well, she didn’t really feel safe talking about him. The bronzer made a lot of people anxious, or nervous, so she’d learned not to bring him up. Daysa didn’t understand why people thought he would hurt them. M’kale was just... intense? But that didn’t translate into violent, not to Daysa.

As Moss chirped and trilled, Sayimith returned her encouragement with noises of her own—thrums and hums and cheeps of her own. Bouncing along behind the flit, she was happy enough to chase her even though she couldn’t fly after her. As before, Moss seemed aware that just taking off would cheapen the game, so Sayimith was confident she’d be able to catch her in time. She just had to put on an appropriate burst of speed to do so.

It would have been uncharitable, Erieen felt, to remark that he didn’t miss such chores. Even though it was the truth. Reminding Daysepona of that wasn’t a good impression to make this early in their friendship, much less at all. Shards, what could he say that wouldn’t come across patronizingly or self-importantly?

Just talk, his dragon rumbled to him, cutting through Erieen’s own self-doubt in a way that he could never seem to.

“Well, Sayimith is about five months old now,” he began. “So we’re doing a lot of ground drills still, but more complicated ones. I don’t think my legs have ever hurt so much in my life.” Which was yet another reason he was happy to sit in the grass and get a chance to stretch the muscles out as he leaned back on his hands. “I think in the next couple of days, we’ll be going back to Fort again so the dragons can swim in the river there. How they can stand how cold the water gets, I don’t know.”

It was… nice, to just talk about mundane things.

Moss remained relatively close to the ground for their game. It wouldn’t be fair at al if she flew off and away. What fun would that be? Eventually, Sayimith would catch her. Tagging her with her snout and Moss would turn the game around on her. Chasing after the little Red. The green flit could have easily dove after her and tagged her back but it was far more fun to run after the dragon than end the chase so quickly.

Daysepona glanced at Erieen as he spoke, smiling a little. It was nice to hear someone talk about things so foreign to her. M’kale’s big dragon seemed so foreign and untouchable. Detached and distant. An extension of M’kale that she’d never understand. Having someone that wanted to talk about their dragon was adorable. Sweet. Especially since Sayimith was so different than the imposing bronze she knew.

Quite literally as varied as their hides.

“Is rider training so intensive?” she asked. It was meant to sound inquisitive, not insulting. She really had no idea what he’d be doing now that was different from what he’d done as a Candidate. Really, Daysepona had no idea what a Rider in training did all day. Her own schedule didn’t allot time for observing other people’s lives. “It must be exciting... to get to go back to Fort.” She said the last hesitantly. Nothing about Daysepona wanted to go back to the Hold. She liked the weyr better.

The first time that Sayimith tagged Moss, she let out a loud and reverberating trill of triumph. Skidding in the grass, she dug her claws against the dirt to skid to a halt and take off in another direction. With her wings pinned close to her sides, she might as well have not had them. While Erieen had observed other dragonets using theirs for balance, Sayimith and many of the other Reds didn’t, fully balanced on their feet and ready to run at the drop of a hat. They were utterly graceful on the ground, and he never got tired of watching her.

“It’s a lot more physical than Candidacy was. In that, we did exercise every other day or so, but it wasn’t as rigorous. I guess now is when we’re really being molded into riders.” Picking at the grass again, Erieen then admitted, “Though I don’t really feel like one. Sayimith has made my life better in so many ways, but I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing.”

At further mention of Fort, Erieen actually made a face. “It’s not so bad since we stick near the Weyr and don’t go inside. I’d rather face Thread than go back to the Hold.” Daysepona might think it was an exaggeration, but for Erieen it was not. There were too many bad memories there—and it was all a reminder of what he’d been before, of the life he was trying to forget, to let Sayimith’s adoration wash away. Returning just seemed to be inviting something bad.

Moss didn’t seem to realize how comical it was that a tiny green flit was presently chasing a creature much larger than she was. She’d never been put off that she was so small. Especially not when she could make screeching sounds of a creature ten times her size. Now, she chased after Sayimith and easily kept up despite her diminutive size. It had everything to do with her quick, sharp wingbeats.

There was no way she’d be able to keep up just on the ground.

Daysa chuckled a little. “I suppose that makes sense, hm? Now that you actually have a dragon, that seems to be the next course of action.” When he admitted as much, she nodded some and leaned back on her hands. Watching their respective bonded. “I suspect it’s... it’s like most things that are new. I can’t really understand what it’s like to be bonded to a dragon, I mean... but I had my first son I didn’t feel any different. Not like a mother at all. Others talk about it like it’s a life changing experience but... It never has been, or was, to me. Even after two babes.” Daysa shrugged a shoulder and blushed. She hadn’t really told anyone that before, but it seemed the right thing to say, in an attempt to make him feel better.

When he clarified he was going to the Weyr, she nodded a little more and kept her attention on the dragon and flit. There was a weight of cold dread at even mentioning the place. Like she might very well be carted off, and back, to Fort. Just the way it was, even after all this time. “I’m not sure what would really be worse,” she murmured. Thread or the Hold? Wasn’t it all a nightmare either way?

Sayimith happily called out her encouragement to her playmate, though the tiny flit didn’t seem to need it. That above all was the reason the Red had been looking forward to the promised playdate with Moss. So many of her classmates got uppity when she tried to play with them, on the rare occasions she really noticed them at all. And though Sayimith was hardly the sort of dragon to be discouraged or hurt by such a thing, she did get bored at times when Erieen’s energy ran out and he couldn’t chase her any more himself. Despite her best efforts to get Escort and Lady to play with her, neither of her rider’s flits would endure it. They would just Between elsewhere, which in Sayimith’s opinion was thoroughly unfair.

It was some consolation to Erieen that he wasn’t the only one that struggled to adjust to such things. Having children might be vastly different than Impressing, but he could imagine similar feelings of not knowing how to proceed—and he appreciated Daysepona’s sentiment for what it was. “I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels that way.” He even offered her a rare genuine smile. “I guess it’s just been a long time since I’ve gotten to do anything… new.”

Newness and novelty were not things that characterized either a drudge’s or a whore’s life. More often than not, such things were barred to him simply on principle. And people who had been born or lived most of their life at a Weyr didn’t seem to understand just how hard it could be to overcome that. They just assumed that everyone had received much the same care they had as children.

“I think people are worse,” Erieen mused after another moment, feeling somewhat like he was fucking up the conversation with it taking a darker turn. “At least Thread isn’t knowingly malicious.”

Eventually, Moss did manage to catch Sayimith and she quickly backwinged so she might then be chased. She darted across the open, chill bowl and over the grass. It was cool and steadily becoming dark, but she was still easy to see. While there might’ve been some other dragons milling about in the grass, she didn’t head toward them. Trying to keep to the open spaces so they could really go as fast as either could.

Daysepona understood the idea of newness. Such things were a rarity for her too, which was one of the reasons she liked dragging M’kale to things she would otherwise never be able to really go to. Hatchings and other events that were primarily for riders. He didn’t have much of an interest, but she was so excited to just... be apart of something more. The Weyr was lovely, because the people were just better.

Generally.

Even so, she could understand the sentiment that people were worse. Daysa didn’t know enough about Thread to say whether or not it was malicious, but it’d certainly destroyed an entire planet so... she couldn’t say that people were worse in that regard. It’d been Riders that had kept them all safe, or as safe as they could, after all. Without people sacrificing themselves for everyone else, they wouldn’t be alive.

Daysa chewed on her lower lip and watched him, unsure if she should say anything. Surely if he felt that way, it was because someone had been particularly cruel to him. Or someones? “I suppose so,” she ended up muttering.

Bounding after Moss yet again, Sayimith was happy to run like there was nothing else going on in the world. She might vaguely be aware that they needed to keep to unoccupied areas of the Bowl, but it was a distant concern to her. For the time being, she was just following the Green, moving at full tilt and completely heedless of the possibility she might even run into anything. All that mattered was winning the next portion of their game.

Ah, there it was. Erieen wasn’t sure when, exactly, he’d gotten so self-conscious. During the Pass, he’d kept up a veneer of arrogance and assurance. To sell himself as a product, after all, he’d had to believe, at least somewhat, that he was worth buying. But somewhere between then and here, a sense of doubt had crept into his heart. So when Daysepona fell largely silent and then murmured her response, it was clear—in his own mind—that he’d committed a conversational fumble.

“Sorry,” he said, mustering a smile as he turned toward her again. “I didn’t mean to dwell on unhappy things. I really am glad you decided to join me. I don’t…” Wasn’t there something to the idea that vulnerability was one of the keys to getting to know people? “I don’t really have a lot of friends.”

Daysepona glanced his way when he apologized, surprise alighting on her face. She wasn’t sure what he had to apologize for. When he then explained, she shook her head a little, but she didn’t know how to tell him that it wasn’t necessary. So, instead, she just chewed her lip and watched him, picking at the grass.

It wasn’t until he admitted he didn’t have a lot of friends that she stopped abusing her lip and offered him a tentative smile. “It’s... it’s ok. I don’t... uhm.... I don’t really... either. Ah. I don’t think I’m very interesting to be around, really. The most interesting thing about me are my flits...” That had been the entire reason they’d met up, after all. Moss. Daysepona herself didn’t really have much to offer. She couldn’t read, couldn’t write, could barely do any sort of math, and her skill set was exclusively cooking, farming, and some sewing. Rudimentary, drudge work.

Having admitted as much, she looked away from him and watched her flit. Feeling more than a little self-conscious. Guard thrummed for her and rubbed his head along her arm in an effort to comfort her. He certainly thought the world of her.

That tentative smile and stammering response did put Erieen at ease in an odd way. Knowing that they were both feeling a little awkward helped him to not feel so much that he was messing up the entire thing. And her admission about feeling distinctly uninteresting was one he could definitely empathize with. He just hoped saying so wouldn’t ring insincerely.

“I’m not either,” Erieen said slowly. “I’ve never been special… not until Sayimith. Even now, I feel out of place among the other weyrlings.  So many of them are from the Weyr, or their parents or riders. Or if they were Holders, their family was, well… pretty well-off.” He knew that wasn’t true of all of them—S’nis jumped to mind, though he didn’t know much about the man’s background—but sometimes it felt like everyone else had so much more experience with dragons,  or were ahead of him in other ways.

“I had to make up a lot of schooling while I was a Candidate too.” That had been a particularly agonizing exercise in embarrassment, as children vastly younger than him taught him things that otherwise seemed so natural to them. “If Impressing the color I did hasn’t set me apart enough, coming from a drudge background certainly has.” Erieen suspected part of it was his own doing and self-consciousness, but there he was regardless.

Though she didn’t pause in her playing, he could sense Sayimith’s outpouring of love and reassurance through their bond. You’re special to me. She was gentler about it than some of the times in the past, perhaps sensing that was what he needed at the moment.

Daysepona smiled down at Guard while he rubbed on her. He was such a sweet creature when he wasn’t glaring at other people. While she didn’t look at Erieen, she did respond to him. “I think there must have been... something about you that made you special if you ended up becoming a candidate, and now a dragon rider.” Then, she did glance up. Just briefly. “The fact that you are a dragon rider at all is pretty special.” It wasn’t that Daysepona was envious, or jealous. It didn’t occur to her that she’d ever be able to be such a thing, or that it was capable to want it for herself. Such things were for other people who had more going for them.

She did look up to follow Sayimith and frown a little. “I’m not sure I understand... the differences in the colors. Is it just because they’re a different color? Does that mean so much?” Maybe he wasn’t the right person to ask, but she just didn’t get it. A color was just a color, right? Did it all really matter that much? Either way, “She’s a delightful dragon.”

Erieen felt himself blush uncharacteristically at such praise. When it was completely without artifice or ulterior motives, he wasn’t entirely sure how to respond to it. Sayimith herself seemed a little amused, and simply hummed in his head again to express her agreement of what Daysepona had said. She wouldn’t have chosen him if he wasn’t special, she seemed to say, though she didn’t speak. Her attention was too focused on her game with Moss—but never so much not to reassure her rider.

“Yeah… I guess it is.” It still seemed to Erieen that Sayimith was really the special part. As an extension of her, he had found a purpose and security both. But that didn’t make up for the turns he’d done nothing more than drudging and whoring. What Reesskith had ever seen in him to make him think Erieen was suitable for Candidacy, he wasn’t sure. He’d asked C’ace before, but the reason behind a Search dragon’s choices seemed mysterious at best.

Still, he glanced at Daysepona with a faint smile. “Thank you.”

“It does to some, I suppose.” His smile faded again as he looked out across the Bowl, considering Daysepona’s question. “I know a lot of high ranking riders are upset the Blacks are challenging Bronzes… and some don’t like the Reds because they hurt people. When they hatch.” The last was added as clarification. “But they don’t mean it. They’re just… excited.” Softly, then, he chuckled. “And I’m pretty fond of her myself.”

A vast understatement, but such easy joking was new and rather pleasant.

It was odd he kept thanking her for things that didn’t need it for, but it also made her smile. Maybe it was the trade mark of someone who was used to doing things for other people. Daysepona certainly knew that she had her own habits that M’kale found... interesting... because of her more subservient tendencies. It was just a facet of spending a lot of time as a drudge.

She did nod a little when he attempted to explain. From her understanding, people had gotten hurt from hatchings before. But since she’d never been to one before M’kale, she couldn’t really compare them. Or say otherwise. As to what the black dragons were doing in regards to the bronzes... that sounded like overly complicated politics. More things she didn’t understand.

At times, she was glad for it.

“I think so long as the people who are bonded to the dragons are happy, and the dragons themselves are healthy, then that’s all that matters.” She knew that wasn’t the case in how other people thought, but that was frequently her opinion on things. Life was hard enough as is, no reason to further complicate it. “Besides, it’s sweet watching her play.”

Before she’d asked for clarification, Erieen had been half braced for… well, he wasn’t quite sure what. That was just his way. Always questioning and second-guessing everyone else’s motivations. When he’d first Impressed to Sayimith, he’d tried to stifle it, thinking for sure that even she would grow tired of it after a while. No one else had ever been so intimately in his head—Lady and Escort didn’t understand his distress in quite the same way, though they did their best to be supportive.

Sayimith, though… he’d lost count of how many times she’d told him, It’s okay, or Don’t worry, or even, I don’t mind. She was endlessly responsive and reassuring, and slowly Erieen was beginning to think maybe he could be better. Even if he had yet to get past the defensiveness inherent in having Impressed to one of the new colors.

He wasn’t much of one for getting into fights, but he had no intention of keeping his mouth shut if someone insulted Sayimith either.

But it was nice to just commiserate some. “I feel the same way. She’s not any different than any other dragon, just smaller.” Fondly, as he watched her and Moss, Erieen added, “Part of me hopes she never gets tired of playing like that. But I don’t know if she’ll feel the same way when she’s grown.”

Why would I ever want to stop playing? Sayimith broke in, as though that was the most ridiculous thing she’d ever heard. I never will.

Daysa watched her flit chase after the little red dragon. It really was quite comical – Moss was so tiny. If anything, that did make her smile more so. It was sweet that someone didn’t think her fire lizard was a nuisance. Moss always meant well and all her actions were done with innocent, playful intentions.

It just happened to annoy other people. That it didn’t bother Sayimith or Erieen at all was nice. She could actually breath without worrying they’d get upset at what she was doing.

“It’s really hard to say. Moss is growing up but her personality hasn’t changed at all.” Daysa couldn’t say how similar flits were to dragons, but it was the only observation she could offer. “Even if she doesn’t always want to play, I’m sure she’ll always be playful.” Such things rarely changed so drastically.

Erieen nodded thoughtfully at that. Escort and Lady’s personalities hadn’t changed since they had hatched either, no matter that one of them was nearly half grown now. But it had never occurred to him before to ask either C’ace or Inanna if their dragons were significantly different than they had been. Of course, he supposed some change was natural; they weren’t just static creatures, after all. But how similar were they to their younger selves? Just more mature? And maybe the Reds were different anyway, given that they seemed to be more rambunctious in general than the other colors even as babies.

“I think you’re right about that,” he said after a moment. He couldn’t imagine Sayimith ever being completely serious or stuffy. The thought just made him want to laugh. “They’re just like people that way, I guess.” People didn’t change, really, once their personalities were set. At least not that he had observed. It would make a certain kind of sense that dragons weren’t any different.
