Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Protecting My Investments [ 24.5.2591; 8 PM ] || Domnitissa
« on: August 09, 2018, 08:23:08 PM »
Turns ago, the idea of putting so much time and effort into Domni would have been laughable. As much as he’d enjoyed her company, she’d just been a whore. And Ophy was, if anything, not the sort to get attached. That was just who he was, even besides the fact that he’d have no business thinking there was anything more between them.

But time had made him reconsider some of that. Since the abandonment of Fort Hold, much of the underbelly previously thriving there had been broken up, like a burrow of Thread exposed to air and fire. That, ultimately, had included the brothel that had previously owned her. She’d sought him out because he was familiar, a regular client, and she knew well enough that he would be able to protect her.

If she had a cunning bone in her body, she’d be quite pleased now. But Ophy had accepted the arrangement in the first place because he knew she wasn’t. There was no deeper game, no sense of her taking advantage of what he could provide.

That just wasn’t how her mind worked.

Getting a flit for her after the disturbance at the Weyr had made sense to him. She’d fled into the tunnels, and it had taken him and Ophysk marks to find her. All because she’d gotten lost, which was an unfortunate side effect of her otherwise doing what she was told—which was to make herself scarce at the first sign of brewing violence.

It kept her out of the way, and kept her safe.

Ophy had been considering something more serious, more drastic than that since the last Hunter attack. That one of the beasts had gotten into the Hall was a fucking wake up call if he’d ever seen one, and it hadn’t been lost on him that it had taken a group of large wher to take the creature down at all. Really, they’d been lucky that they hadn’t lost more. Or that more than a single Hunter had made its way past those huge doors.

Much of his mulling it over had been wondering if it would be worth it. What he had in mind would be a time-consuming project, especially since he knew Domnitissa would need help with it… But it had been one night, sated and lazy, when they were both idly dozing, that his fingers had played over the possessive mark he’d cut into her back, and Ophyonis had made his decision.

Fuck it. He’d put a lot of time in her. Replacing her wouldn’t be as easy as just getting another whore at this point.

Arranging it had taken even longer. Wher clutches didn’t happen every day. Even less so that a Gold was laid. And even rarer that the mother belonged to someone he had pull with, whether through past favors or future ones.

In the end, he’d made a deal to look the other way for someone’s upcoming little project, and they’d been happy enough to agree. Ophy didn’t bother to tell them that he was already interested in what they had planned. The more that the Mine Hall started to resemble Fort, all the better for him. But admitting that would remove his bargaining chip, and so he’d kept his mouth shut about it and made it clear they’d have to buy his silence.

Returning from that meeting now, he was carrying a wrapped bundle against his chest, cradled in the crook of one elbow. Both Ophysk and Onisk were curious about it, and instinctively protective—the Bronze moreso than the Blue, given both his color and age. But Onisk still picked up the other wher’s growling and echoed it whenever anyone got too close in the hallways. They knew what their Handler was carrying was precious.

Pushing past the hanging curtain that served as their door, he addressed Domni. “Got somethin’ for ya.” The quicker she took it from him, the faster he’d be able to get out of his Peacekeeper leathers and relax.

Spoiler for OOC:
8D We’d talked about this in the past, so… surprise! Let me know if you want me to make the whole profile when it hatches, just color it, or if you wanna do it.

Domnitissa wouldn’t say that she loved Ophy, and he’d certainly not appreciate such sentiment, but she was comfortable with him. She liked her life at the Hall, even if the tunnels were still a mystery to her. Dusk was a huge help in that, helping her make it to and from their room and the main Hall. She still didn’t like going anywhere alone, and she never would, but she could make the occasional trip alone.

Well. With Dusk. The little blue flit never left her side. In that, he was faithful, loyal, and doted on her as much as she doted on him. Only once they were in the safety of their rooms did he find a nook in the wall to relax and nestle, occasionally waking up to watch her and note where she was. Dusk didn’t bother her on the bed. The flit had long understood that was where Ophy spent his time with his bonded and he didn’t want to be in the way.

When Ophy went out and about to do his job, Domni cleaned up their room, made the occasional laundry run – another task she did with Dusk, quite timidly – and tended to herself. She’d made no real friends and didn’t really have a desire for them. Domnitissa had her fill of people back at Fort and she quite liked her quiet solitude when she could take it. It was still a novel thing she treasured, not having people just wander into her privacy whenever they wanted.

Quite the opposite. This was her and Ophy’s room and no one would dare bother her while he was away. She liked it like that.

When he returned, Domnitissa was sitting at the small table they had and idly brushing her hair in nothing but one of her shirts. She eyed his wher a moment before standing to greet him with a small smile that faltered a moment when he said he had something for her. Dusk perked up, curious as well. “Oh? A present?” Domnitissa did like gifts, especially from Ophy.

He was far from being the domestic sort, but there was something nice about having her there when he got home. Ophy knew she tidied up while he was away too, without him ever having to ask. And she was always ready to greet him attentively when that’s what he wanted. Just like she did now, as she rose from her seat at their small table.

“Yeah, you could call it that.” It wasn’t often that he got her things; but because she never asked, whined, or wheedled, he still did on occasion. Dusk had been one of those things, even if the motivation for getting her the flit was selfish.

Still, Ophy recognized that keeping her content meant she’d never look for anyone else to take care of her.

Both Ophysk and Onisk moved over to their sleeping area, happy to relax now that the day was over. The larger Bronze simply plopped down on the stone with a grunt, and proceeded to ignore the other wher as Onisk bothered him. Idly, since he was tired out after a long day too, but he nosed at Ophysk’s face and clumsily climbed over him. The Blue was still practically a baby, after all.

“It’s another thing you’re gonna have to be careful with at first.” Ophy closed the distance between them so Domni could get a better look at what he was carrying. Gently, then, he peeled back some of the cloth wrapped around it.

The golden surface of the egg caught the light as it was revealed, glittering like a precious bit of ore the Miners might discover in their tunnels. It bore a fold along one side too, not quite curving around the top into a full circle, and the rest of the wrinkles disappearing under the remaining fabric. “It’ll be a couple months before she hatches, but she’s yours when she does.”

Domnitissa never asked him where he might wander off to during any of the times he left. She always assumed it was work, but she also knew he occasionally participated in wher runs. He lost a fair few, and when he did, he’d return to her.

That made her rather happy. And if Ophy wanted to go visit other beds, that didn’t bother her either. This bed was hers and it was the one he returned to. So long as she continued to please him, then she’d always get to be the one he returned to. That was the same mentality she’d ever had even at the brothel. Becoming a favorite usually meant perks and ever since being his, she’d enjoyed the perks of special gifts, the safety of his room, and having him take her around both the Weyr and the Hall.

When he said it was something she was going to have to take care of, her interest perked more so and her smile widened. Another flit, maybe? But the bundle was far too large. When he pulled back the cloth and it was gold, she didn’t know what to say. Her thoughts scrambled and she blinked up at him, stunned. “A... a wher?” Not just a wher, though. A gold wher. A queen wher.

What had she ever done to deserve something so... so special? Domnitissa didn’t even feel worthy enough to reach for the egg. “Ophy... I...” Her eyes dropped to the glittering egg and she couldn’t quite look away. Whers made her anxious. She’d seen them tear into people before.

The idea that the biggest one might be hers? She couldn’t even comprehend...

Ophy wasn’t made impatient by her response only because he’d been expecting it. He knew Domni was afraid of whers; she was still even anxious around his own sometimes, and they’d never been aggressive toward her. That, and her reaction to the flit egg had been stunned too. A wher was that much more important, that much more of a commitment. He’d have been more surprised if she hadn’t hesitated.

“Ophysk and I can’t be here all the time,” he explained, reaching out with one hand to take hers, turning it palm up and setting the bundled egg there. He didn’t let go until he was sure she had a firm grip on it, even nudging her hands closer to her body so it’d be nestled against her stomach. “‘Specially with the different Peacekeeper shifts. But I won’t hafta worry ‘bout you if you’ve got her.”

Originally, he’d considered getting Domni just a regular wher egg. But that was too much of a gamble, given that he’d have no way of knowing what color would hatch out of it. And as useful as Blues and Greens might be proving themselves for sensing Hunters, they weren’t really big enough to do much protecting. Anyone with a bigger wher wouldn’t have much to fear from them.

This way, he could be sure Domnitissa would have a suitable guard. Any other watchwher that might go after her would not only be outclassed in terms of size, but the Queen would be able to force them away with her will too.

On a more selfish note, he rather liked the idea of having Domni during a wher Run they could both participate in. Her Runs would only ever be locked. And the resulting eggs would be useful later for bargaining and favors.

Once he was sure she wasn’t going to drop the egg, he stepped back a little and shrugged out of his wherhide jacket. “Gotta be gentle with the egg until the shell toughens up some, but it won’t be as delicate as your flit’s was.” That was one of the advantages of whers; their leathery eggs were harder to damage than fragile, breakable ones.

Domnitissa knew a little about what it took to care for a wher just because she’d seen Ophy do it for several turns now. It was the one thing she wouldn’t offer to do for him or outright tend to on her own. His wher were... nicer... than any other, and she’d been guarded by the biggest a time or two, so she wasn’t as afraid of them as others.

In a way, she understood they were an extension of him and because he wanted her safe, they weren’t going to hurt her. It was just a fear that was hard to shake. Other wher had her reflexively flinching away or even turning away and opting to go down the tunnel at a later time entirely, especially if she were alone.

Now that he was an official Peacekeeper, she understood that he had to take his wher with him. Dusk was a dutiful bodyguard though and she did feel safe with the tiny flit. But he was, well, tiny. Logically, she understood that he wasn’t much of a deterrent if there was one needed.

When he took her hand, she obediently accepted the egg and cradled the warm bundle against her body. Dusk flapped over from his nook and perched on her shoulder, curious but careful. He always was around Domnitissa so his sharp claws didn’t scratch her. Ultimately, it didn’t matter if she was anxious about the wher or not. If this was what Ophy wanted her to do... she’d do it. “Thank you,” she murmured softly, glancing up at him and smiling a little. It must have been difficult for him to obtain and for that alone she’d appreciate the gift.

Surely a wher that was bonded to her wouldn’t attack her. Right?

“You’re welcome.” Her gratitude was another reason he’d felt justified in getting her such a gift. Domni had always made it very clear how much she appreciated the things he did for her. Were she the type to be ungrateful, this little arrangement wouldn’t have lasted long to begin with.

“Bonding to her’ll be a little different than for Dusk,” he added, as he peeled off the rest of his leather armor and dumped it on their small table. Before he stored it for the day, Ophy intended to check it over for spots that needed attention or oiling. As he pulled out the second of their two chairs to sink down on it, he gestured for Domni to re-take her previous seat. “Do you remember what it takes?”

He knew she’d seen wher bondings before—at least at the infamous hatching a turn ago, when someone first bonded to a second, and when Onisk had hatched as well. But it also wasn’t the sort of knowledge that he expected her to have made a point to remember. Until today, it hadn’t really mattered in her life.

When her Gold broke the shell, he’d probably have to be there too. Ophy didn’t know if Domni would be able to draw her own blood for the bond. That wasn’t really her nature. But he’d make sure she knew how to do it properly just in case, so she wouldn’t inadvertently hurt herself if circumstances didn’t cooperate.

Domnitissa had a trunk of her own – another perk of being with Ophy – that she stored some extra clothes and scraps of cloth she used to clean around their room. It was there she moved to open the lid and make a nest for the bundled egg. Dusk chirped at her again and Domnitissa extended her arm for him. It didn’t occur to her at all that he’d harm the egg, and he didn’t. Rather, the little blue flit curled up around it and looked at her for approval. She smiled, scratched under his jaw, and turned her attention back to Ophy.

When he’d asked if she remembered what wher bonding entailed, she considered a moment while she idly tidied up his armor on the table. Not putting it away nor folding it, but setting it in a way that would make it easier for him to go over it. As he was wont to do after he’d relaxed. Laying it out so it wouldn’t slip off and it would be ready for inspection.

Eventually, she shook her head and took the seat he’d indicated. “I just remember Onisk hatching but I don’t really remember what you had to do.” Then, idly, she asked, “Are you going anywhere else tonight?” If he wasn’t, she’d move to kneel in front of him and help him out of his boots but she didn’t want to assume since he’d wanted her in the seat.

Ophy leaned back in the chair while she bundled the egg into her trunk, idly watching her as he waited for her answer. Despite her initial misgivings, she seemed at ease enough with the egg itself, which was good. He’d hoped that by having her care for it before it hatched, it would diminish some of her fear by the time the thing hatched. Rather than taking her to an active clutch and tossing her into the action. No doubt that would just make her panic, which wouldn’t be good for trying to bond to a wher.

Her answer was no surprise, and he grunted an acknowledgment of it. But he did choose to answer her question first. “Nah. I’m here for the night.” He had, fortunately, not pulled a late shift rotation that day, so there would be no reason for him to leave their room again until the morning.

“She’ll have to taste some of your blood to make the bond. Just a bit.” Ophy held up his left hand so she could see the thin scar along the outside of his thumb. He’d cut over it again to bond to Onisk, but slicing across his palm had always seemed stupid to him. It took much longer to heal than a cut that was relatively out of the way. “A scratch’ll do. And if I’m here, I can cut for you. After that, she’ll need food just like Dusk did.”

Domnitissa smiled a little and smoothly slid to kneel in front of him, settling there comfortably so she could unlace and pull of his boots. Small acts like that she quite enjoyed. Just little things to show her appreciation.

At his answer, she glanced up and nodded to show she’d heard. A bit of blood never bothered her and knives didn’t scare her. If that’s what was required, then she’d do it. Granted, she’d prefer if Ophy was around, but she didn’t want to disappoint him and fail. Ruining the wher somehow, or failing to bond, just wasn’t an option.

“Do you know when she might hatch?” Domnitissa asked, setting his boots off to the side once she was done. Dusk had hatched rather quickly once she’d been gifted the small flit, and he’d been rather ravenous. “And how much will she need to eat?”
