Current Month

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

These things take time [ 5.12.2573 / 11PM ] L’ok

W’sar wasn’t sure how long they’d been in this ground weyr. It had become their home away from home. Essentially moving in. Sath couldn’t reliably, or safely, fly yet. Training was still being done and healing was still a requirement – healer’s orders – for both W’sar and Sath. They’d been through a lot. Come very far. Gained a new friend.

Venture was turning out to be far more help than even W’sar could have imagined. At first, when the Healers told him he should get a flit to help, it had seemed an almost laughably insulting suggestion. Both he and Sath hadn’t ever really seen the merit in the pet like creatures that people had around. They were just more work and often annoying things that quickly got in the way.

A turn and a half, and Venture had proven them both completely wrong. The serious brown flit had proven to be extremely loyal, quietly affectionate, and attentively hard working. From the moment he’d hatched and impressed to W’sar, he seemed to understand that he was needed. That Sath and W’sar were in some manned of inexpressible pain. He had never been the giddy, chirping, bundle of energy that W’sar had seen in other flits.

Still, he had to be taught, and that did take time. Teaching Sath and Venture to work together took time. All of it did.

The ground weyr was near the Healer’s Hall because Sath’s injured eye was still requiring check ups and the thread score on his neck was healing properly. Muscle damage took a long time to heal. Relearning how to see with one eye – even longer. W’sar made his way toward the ever open healer’s hall. The sky above was alight with dragon fire as the night shift of thread fliers overhead kept the weyr safe.

W’sar idly watched the bursts of fire overhead as he made his way, until the view was cut off from the healer hall ceiling. They would eventually return to that fire-scape. Return to their duty. W’sar, Sath, and Venture were quietly resolved. It was just going to take time.

An apprentice healer, looking haggard, approached W’sar to see if he needed anything. When all he asked for was some herbal tea to help him sleep, the apprentice smiled a little and nodded before going to retrieve it. W’sar was made to wait in the entrance hall, trying not to hear the soft moans of those injured further in.

Long hours were endemic to everyone anymore, rider or no. L’ok might never be a full Wingrider again as he had been in his youth, but that didn’t mean he led a life of relaxation either. Whether it was cooking or cleaning in the kitchens, helping another rider with their gear, or aiding the Craft Halls however he could, he was more than willing to go to work at whatever was necessary. In this particular case, it was helping to man the Healer Hall during the late hours. He might not have the training to serve as an actual medic, but there were still menial tasks that needed tending to -- rolling bandages, sterilizing tools, and other aspects of general upkeep. All of which he was capable of handling to free up actual trained Healers for whatever patients may need tended.

He’d just finished rolling the last in a stack of bandages, tucking them into the crate meant for storing them. Leaning back in his chair, L’ok winced a little as he felt some of his joints pop. The stiffness had settled in his muscles while he sat, and he could feel an ache developing too.

As one of the supervising Journeymen passed, L’ok caught their eye with a faint smile. “Whatever you’ve got next, I’ll be ready in a moment. I’m gonna take a break first, stretch my legs.”

He had to steady himself on the table as he rose, knees cracking as he straightened. Iskelaith idly stirred through their bond, his voice sounding almost lazy save for the hint of concern beneath it all. Are you alright?

//Yeah, I’m fine. Just need to walk around a moment.// Slipping past an apprentice just making their way deeper into the Hall, L’ok stepped out into the entrance way. He’d meant to simply wander a moment, and ease the hurt in his legs. But seeing W’sar, L’ok smiled some and moved closer. “Hey. Late night, huh?”

The two of them had met in the Hall some months ago. And though it was rather hit or miss when they did see each other, he was always happy to run across the Brown rider. But he did hope his friend was alright, given that, well, he was visiting the Healers, and especially at such a late hour.

Spoiler for OOC:
8D This post is a piece of trash. I’m sorry.

W’sar sat on one of the waiting benches in the entrance hall. Though the Healers always seemed busy, it sometimes quieted at night. That really just meant that all the healers were busy tending to those occupying beds and, unless a dragonpair were brought in, were trying to sleep. There was always healers on staff. They had to be awake at all marks just like the riders given the amount of people and dragons that came to them for aid.

With the amount of time W’sar and Sath had spent in the Healer Hall, he had a renewed appreciation of all they did.

He tried to smile for L’ok when he noticed the other Rider, but it didn’t reach his dark eyes. W’sar was tired, he looked ten turns older than he really was, and he was in desperate need of a good shave. A nice long soak would’ve probably done him some good, but he hadn’t wanted to leave Sath long enough to do even that, just quick scrubs when it was needed. “Ah. Yeah. Another one. I’m having trouble sleeping again.” W’sar didn’t want to admit it was nightmares and anxiety keeping him awake.

Everyone had nightmares. Everyone was anxious. It would have just sounded weak coming from him.

The tea would help chase some of that away and quiet his mind while Sath and Venture were asleep. He almost envied them their rest.

“I’m sorry to hear that.” L’ok’s voice was low and sympathetic, but without being patronizing. He knew how hard it was to struggle with such things. Even talking to other riders that often went through the same ordeals wasn’t easy.

It was still taking L’ok a considerable effort to admit that sometimes he needed… help. As bad as the pain sometimes got for him, he was still incredibly reluctant to ask the Healers for medicine. He knew that fellis and nettlesap were addictive. After all he’d been through and overcome, the idea of having to rely on either of them to function just seemed unthinkable.

Sometimes, though, he just wanted to disappear into the sweet ease of pain that they could provide.

Though he didn’t sit on the bench, L’ok did lean against the wall near to his friend. A companionable closeness without being overbearing. He glanced at W’sar again then and ventured, “How is Sath doing?”

Nor was it an idle question. Beyond simply inquiring to be polite, he genuinely wanted to know how the Brown was faring. Almost losing his dragon was something L’ok couldn’t imagine. But he knew it had to be terrifying. Shaking, for both dragon and rider.

W’sar appreciated the sentiment. The healers were unique in that they didn’t often apologize for anything, they just asked what they could do. It woud’ve sounded awkward coming from the anyways – they wouldn’t often be able to understand the problems for a Rider when their dragon was distressed, but W’sar very much appreciated that they just wanted to help.

Another Rider, though, could empathize and sympathize.

He passed a calloused hand over his face before smiling once the worn looking apprentice returned with the tea. It was a small cup, but it was warm in his hand and smelt of various herbs. He’d never know what they put in it, only that it helped him relax. Nothing medicated, just brewed for those that needed help sleeping.

When L’ok asked about Sath, W’sar leaned against the wall behind the bench and let out a long breath. “It’s just slow going. Taken some time for the physical therapy and we’re really only getting into walking with Venture. I can’t imagine how flying is going to go.” He knew they would, it was just going to be small steps along the way. Relearning everything without proper depth perception, then having Venture relay a lot of information into Sath at the same time was just… It could be overwhelming for the Brown.

Then, with a wry smile, W’sar asked, “How have you been?”

L’ok nodded thoughtfully as he listened to W’sar’s answer. The physical therapy for a dragon could be vastly harder than it was for a rider; with the creatures being the size that they were, there was only so much a Healer could do to actually help the patient. Other dragons were often used to stabilize them as they performed the therapy, but even they could only assist so much.

“At least dragons adapt faster than we do,” he mused, absently tugging at his beard. With their shorter memories, they had less hangups about changes to routine or even ways of operating. Once they changed Wings, the schedules of the previous were easily forgotten. So it was, too, with many other aspects of life. Dragons that were injured tended to rehabilitate faster compared to their riders -- after a certain amount of time, they simply wouldn’t be able to remember the way things had been before their wound.

He smiled a little then. “As hard as the three of you work at it, I’m sure you’ll adjust just fine.” L’ok knew that the entire transition had been hard on W’sar and Sath both. But neither of them were the sort to give up. They would not languish as others did. Adapting was difficult, but not impossible. And W’sar had lucked out with the firelizard he had bonded to.

The return question was appreciated, and L’ok tugged at his beard again as he formulated an answer. “Better,” he said after a moment. “It’s still frustrating to come up against so many things I just can’t do anymore. But at least there are still some ways I can help out.” His voice dipped into a gruff murmur. “I don’t know what I’d do with myself if I couldn’t at all.”

Relax, Iskelaith suggested, but the Blue knew that just wasn’t who his rider was. He would always much rather be doing something than not.

W’sar quietly sipped his tea while he considered everything L’ok had to say. He definitely had a point about dragons being able to adapt faster. Sath didn’t even remember how he’d been injured. He knew W’sar had nearly lost himself, he knew of his Rider’s pain, but he didn’t remember his own or how he’d almost died.

In that, W’sar was incredibly envious but also rather relieved. He was glad Sath didn’t remember and wished he could forget himself. Getting to focus on his dragon’s healing and having something to work towards gave them something else to think about – gave W’sar something else to think about. It was only in the quiet moments of the night, when both flit and dragon were asleep, that he struggled with his own nightmares.

L’ok’s confidence was appreciated and he smiled a little more, though it still didn’t reach his tired, dark eyes. They rarely did anymore.

“I think it’s just in our nature, as Riders, to need something to do. Especially after we’d spent so long on the go.” At least, W’sar believed that. Many would’ve thought some time in the Healer’s Hall while his dragon recovered might be a welcome respite from flying Thread, but it wasn’t. W’sar was restless, anxious, and wanted to be able to do something to save his dragon. To fix it all so they could go back to doing what they had before.

It wasn’t because they were eager to put themselves in danger again, but it felt… unfair… to be safe while so many of his wingmates were risking themselves every day.  So they would heal up, they would relearn, and resume their duty to weyr and Pern.

“You must be right. I don’t think any of us make really good patients.” As many other riders as he’d seen in the Healer Hall, L’ok knew most of them ended up restless. They weren’t generally good at sitting still, and their dragons sometimes even less so. It might vary by pair, but he’d observed enough of them to know that the Healers frequently had the most issue with riders.

He was a little hesitant for the next part, since some riders could be standoffish about needing others, and he didn’t want to offend W’sar. But L’ok didn’t think the level-headed Brown rider was the sort to have his pride so easily hurt either. “If you ever need another dragon to help in your therapy, Iskelaith and I would be happy to help.” The Blue might be smaller than Sath, but he was sturdy. If necessary, he could still serve as a balance or an aid.

That, and he knew Iskelaith would have no issue helping them. Of course I wouldn't, his dragon broke in dryly, a bit amused but no less sincere. They’re our friends.

Iskelaith would never say so, but he would also appreciate having something more active to do. Any more, he was often left with little to occupy his time while L’ok tended to chores and tasks indoors.

L’ok’s remark did make W’sar smile a little. It didn’t reach his eyes, but he certainly agreed with the sentiment. Many riders didn’t want to be in the Healer’s Hall for more than the obvious reason. No one impressed thinking it was going to be an easy life. Not when there was the constant reminder overhead just what they were getting themselves into.

At the offer to help, W’sar nodded a little and looked down at his cup of tea. “I appreciate the offer, and will probably take you up on it. Sath still needs some guidance as we’re learning how all this works and we’ve been using other dragons help. Others that are... here while their riders... Well.” He shrugged a shoulder then glanced at L’ok. “If Iskelaith is feeling up to it, he’s always welcomed to help.” It wasn’t just the dragons that became injured, with rider’s worrying or waiting for them to get better. There were dragons outside, or on the ledges surrounding, worrying and waiting for their riders to get better.

Though W’sar’s smile was a thin one, L’ok returned it nevertheless. Even if it wasn’t a real one from the other rider, he hoped that someday it would be. Healing was hard, surviving the Pass was hard. But the fact that they had endured so much already seemed to indicate that they would continue to do so. Those of weaker constitution might have crumbled already.

“He’d be honored to,” he confirmed. Iskelaith wasn’t about to intrude upon the other pair’s bond to tell them so himself, but L’ok would pass it along for him. “He doesn’t like admitting it to me, but he’s felt useless since…” Well, there was no reason to dwell on the painful past when both of them were trying to move beyond it. The Blue rider shrugged one shoulder.  “Anything he can do to help will help him too.”

That way, at least W’sar and Sath would know that they weren’t putting the Blue out any by accepting his help.
