Current Month
7.2591 A.R.
9th Interval

Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Feel free to say hello, guesties! Registered members can request a colored name here.

this holds no IC consequence and is only for fun.

Southern Winds is a Mature Roleplay. This means we allow for sexual, violent content that would be found in a struggling, 9th Interval Pern. Sex is common place in the Weyr and terrible deaths are no stranger here. As such, our players should be 18+. These themes are to be handled maturely at all times.

L’ok didn’t always attend the Rider’s Bets—sometimes, at the end of the day, he just didn’t have the energy for it. More often than not, feeling all the more like an old son-of-a-bitch because of it, he simply retired early and tipped into bed for some lovely sleep. Leave all that excitement for the younger riders who never seemed to stop moving or take a moment to rest.

But this had been a good day. His aches were relatively minor, and L’ok didn’t feel like he might be in danger of passing out on his feet if he did go. It would be a nice chance to socialize with other riders. And maybe, just maybe, there would be some wine. He knew better than to really hope, but it’d be nice if there was. So much of the newer stuff was far too rough for him; not to say that the Brewers and Vinters did a poor job. But they all had to make do with the materials that were available to them, and much of what they produced now just wasn’t to his taste.

He was sure he wouldn’t be the first rider to arrive, but this was hardly a formal event where he would be penalized for such. Inclining his head respectfully to Halirina and S’bok once he had entered the Hatching Sands, L’ok was content to slowly mingle and even get a better look at the eggs in this clutch. He hadn’t taken much opportunity to look at them before, but there was always an idle fascination there.

Iskelaith, for his part, was happy to settle in the Weyr Bowl rather near the entrance, looking forward to socializing as well with the other dragons that might linger after dropping their riders off. Do you think any more Candidates will die this Hatching? he asked, directing the question to the nearest dragon that he didn’t recognize as belonging to a ranked rider. It might be a morbid line of inquiry, but he’d never particularly cared for polite niceties regardless.

Spoiler for OOC:
The time has come for yet another Rider’s Bet! The OOC thread can be found here for those that want to check in and/or place OOC bets. Also, don’t forget that any Candidates you play need to at least check into the OOC Touching if not post directly in the event. If they do not, they will not be eligible to Impress on this clutch.

If anyone wants Iskelaith to have addressed their dragon, live your dreams. 8D

Qire strode into the hatching sands, planning to people-watch on the externals of the crowd until someone interesting showed up. While she liked to have fun, she'd never been one for drawing to much attention to herself. And this was definitely an event to just enjoy, it was about the eggs after all, and the progression of their race.

The candidates must have been very nervous today. He mused to himself more than Qirelai, as she wove her way through the crowds of people after executing the traditional greeting to the Weyrleaders.

I saw Iskelaith on the way in. Seems like L'ok's decided to grace us with his presence. Qirelai responded, not really bothering to reply to Perrikoth's actual question. If it didn't interest her she simply... moved on from the conversation. Perri knew to bring it up again if it was something he was personally interested enough in to drag her into.

Despite Qirelai not being the tallest of the bunch, L'ok always managed to stand out, head and shoulders above the majority of the Weyr. He rivalled even the biggest of the crafters as well. Something Qire personally appreciated when she was trying to seek him out.

"Hey you." She said when she finally managed to weave her way through the crowd, which was slowly but surely increasing as the night wore on. People always trickled in and out of rider's bets, coming when they'd eaten or finished cleaning up after the long day, or simply not coming at all.

Offline A'yara

A’yara always went to the Rider’s Bet, but she never went alone. There was no reason someone as pretty and fun as she was should. Invariably, she would usually get a couple of requests for her to tag along with someone, but this time she decided to approach a certain bronzer and see if he wanted to attend with her.

With the fair unspoken understanding that when it was all said and done, they would be wandering off together.

That was the whole point, and fun, of the Bet to A’yara. Socialize, drink a bit, relax, and eventually leave to go have lazy, drunk sex. It was a night off for the riders that she always looked forward to. It had been the only night they’d been able to celebrate in the Pass. No matter how terrible thread might be, there was always a cause to celebrate dragon eggs. One small victory in a long list of turns filled with sorrow.

The best part? She got to dress like a lady. Well. The last term was a bit loose in definition. Her dress was tailored to be a bit tight and the neckline daringly low. Thankfully there’d be no reason for her to bend over or she might very well spill out of it. A’yara wanted to draw attention to herself, she wanted to feel pretty and desirable. She’d taken the time to brush out her hair and left it down for the occasion.

She could get mussed later on. For the moment, A’yara just felt like any other woman on Pern. No leather gear in sight.

Her arm was laced through M’rek’s as they arrived together. Not because she was particularly possessive, but because it was always fun getting the side long glances when riders showed up together. The ripple of gossip and knowing looks that passed between them all. There wasn’t a lot to talk about that wasn’t work or duty related, so when something was presented, even if it was so small and silly, then it was worth having a go at. She even gave small waves and smiles of greetings as they arrived. A’yara would certainly be one of those women shooting sly grins at others who arrived in pairs too.

That was just part of the fun.

Unhurried, she let M’rek decide where they’d go first. Drinks? Eggs? She didn’t particularly care, she was just happy to be out.

Z'nel bounced as she entered the sands, waving to anyone she knew with a grin. There was always so much going on she could never decide which people to speak to first. She'd had several requests to attend with someone but where was the fun in that? She was still looking and arriving with somebody would take the fun out of the search if they thought she was taken for the night.

She snagged a drink and wound her way back into the crowd, never stopping for too long as hshe worked out who might be up for returning to her weyr. Because it would be a waste of a party and alcohol if she returned to a cold bed.

Allieth hummed thoughtfully at the blue she had curled up beside. If nothing has been changed in how the candidates are presented I think they might. Are they taking bets on that too?

If he tried, it did look like he was smiling, and he had a drink in his hand to give the illusion of being mellowed by the alcohol. It wasn't quite working as he leant against the wall, surveying the hatching sands. He'd celebrate when all three clutches have been laid and impressed without any more drama.

They've done two of these now. They know what's coming - sort of - they can manage another two this turn. Still he's staring at the eggs through the gaps as people wander by as if he can see what's inside them and work out what he and O'sir need to watch for. He's already made his bets. No deaths, no maulings, no injuries, no hatchlings going between. He's sure it's a vain hope, but he feels better for the effort and besides, he was going to do his sharding best when they hatch to make that a reality.

W'um enjoyed the Rider's Bets. It was finally a time when the riders were able to simply... be. He could imagine it was difficult for some of them, in a Weyr like this. Where you weren't just livings with other riders, or Weyrfolk who understood and accepted your way of life. Here there were always crafters underfoot. Which he personally liked, but it certainly made for a different kind of culture than he'd spent most of his adult life in. Here, they could continue a tradition where rider's enjoyed the purity of a hatching.

While a having a somewhat hearty conversation about nothing really, with a few younger rider's, W'um spots D'zel deep in thought.

Ah yes. He sighed to Liramyth in his head.

You are concerned about the hatching as well. The blue made a point to mention.

It was hard not to be concerned. When it had been his Weyrlings that had come into his care injured and broken. And all of them were D'zel's Weyrlings too, even if the man didn't get to know them as well as his assistants did. They only had to look after three clutches, all nine were D'zel's responsibility.

Extricating himself from the conversation that he was now minimally interested, he approached D'zel. Standing beside him and W'um too stared out across the sands, taking in every egg as his eyes passed over them.

"They're going to be a handful again." He said softly. Reds, black, Weyrlings, everything, they were always a handful.

“When haven't they been?” D'zel replied as he took a drink, grimacing at his choice in beverage. “This is the third one, I'd like to think we're getting the hang of it by now.”

He remembered both of Kalestaths last hatchings far clearer than any other. Red dragons charging across the sand, unheeding of where they leapt to investigate the new world they'd found. The black last year that had sent one of its clutchmates into the cold of between and taken her rider with her.
Once they bond they're far more - normal? That's not the right word but it's close enough. They're normal, they eat, they sleep, their riders adjust faster or slower to the new bond. The red and blacks are no more or less intelligent than the other colours.

D'zel would like to hope that they're simply an unexpected biological response to the extended threadfall and the destruction around them. That the numbers will settle to match the green and bronze dragons. If he can teach the riders to respect each other, maybe sometime in the future people won't consider them unusual.

Besides, he's not really mentioned it before, but he's been keeping a close eye on the black and reds, not because he doesn't believe in them, Neisoth and S'bok proved anything is possible. No, he has an idea about them being excellent Hunter tracker and killers. Reds to flush them out, blacks to kill them. It's not an idea the wyer is ready for, especially with the first clutch not yet graduated.

And he should be focusing on the clutch ahead, not on those that are well on their way to joining the working wings.

“We've given the candidates all the information we have, we've done as much around the clutch as Kalestath will allow. What comes will come.”

Pythia wasn't always at these events but now and then she liked to see what all was going on, as long as she could sit in the back and avoid most people.  The new eggs were far more fascinating than the people.  It was no real surprise that Pythia showed up alone either.  Too much attention was awkward and generally she tried to avoid all things awkward.  Observation was much easier and safer.

As she rounded the corner and stepped into the slowly forming crowd she looked around and sighed.  Her face a mask of calm, she made her way to the free space across from others and waited for things to really get started.  Seeing drinks available she snagged one of those as well.  Always good to have a little liquid calm when you were about to be surrounded by more people than was reasonable.  Pythia would have loved to have her green with her now but the lazy thing was sleeping somewhere comfortably.

Thinking this she felt the little green stir slightly in her sleep and harumph in her mind before going back to sleep.  With a mental shake of her head Pythia turned back as people came closer and closer to her safe spot.  Realizing she would have to talk to someone soon she came up with her bets so that she could somewhat control how this went.  It was always best to have something to talk about.  It would also keep her from mouthing something sarcastic, she hoped.

Looking at the eggs she did a quick inventory.  There didn't look to be a gold in the bunch but she was positive there was a few mutated little guys mixed in there.  How interesting would it be if there were even more new colors?  The old traditionalists would lose their minds.  That might be interesting to see.  Truthfully the one that looked sort of stone like [15] was the most interesting to her.  In a clutch of color it was always good to see some that were a bit more understated.  It made her wonder if there was a black dragon in there.  It looked like a bit of smoke had been smudged on the rock so why not a black?

Peeking around again she noticed how everyone was dressed and then looked down at her own outfit.  She was in loose cream colored pants and a soft green top that flowed around her arms and allowed for freedom of movement.  Nothing fancy or constricting for her.  Pythia always had to be able to move at a moments notice so it was best to not be caught up in some silly skirts.

Any more, most of the surviving riders L’ok knew well were members of Mountain, but there was one notable exception. Were the Wing schedules more like the ones that had existed during the Pass, he might have taken issue with Qire being in a different one—back then, the sheer variance of schedules meant that those not included in similar Wings or groups of Wings didn’t see each other much. With Thread falling at all hours of the day, many of the riders had been forced to adopt unusual hours to accommodate.

Now, though, it meant she was in the Weyr rather than away all the time. L’ok knew W’sar would allow Mountain riders to return to the Weyr and attend events like the Turn’s End, but Hatching matters were a little harder to fenagle. The somewhat unpredictable times when they occurred made them hard to plan for, and some riders didn’t care about them at all. But since Beach didn’t leave, it meant he always had at least one friend around when he was feeling energetic enough to be social.

How Qirelai always managed to sneak up on him was another matter. Even as tall as he was, he’d never been good at spotting her in a crowd. That wasn’t to say she was forgettable, but there was a certain quality to her that always seemed to evade him until she all but appeared at his side. Perhaps a hold-over from the life she’d led before being Searched.

Nevertheless, it had been a long time since her sudden appearances really startled him. Instead, L’ok smiled beneath his beard when he heard her voice, and pulled her into a brief, one-armed hug. “I wasn’t sure you’d show up,” he teased in a rumble, “but I’m glad you have.”

Iskelaith was highly pleased that the Green next to him seemed to share his sentiment without taking umbrage at it. Perhaps they should, he observed dryly, adjusting his wings slightly but making sure not to brush her with the closer one out of some politeness. Do you have a guess, sweet lady?

A’yara looked stunning all the time, but she was particularly so this evening. Life as a rider didn’t much lend itself to formal wear beyond riding leathers, and she was practical enough that there weren’t many occasions that M’rek had seen her in a dress. At other Bets, certainly, but this time was special; he’d been thrilled when she’d brought up attending with him, and he had happily accepted. Getting to have her on his arm for the night was an opportunity he wasn’t going to pass up—because he enjoyed her company, because she was certainly worthy to be treated like a lady, and also with the promise that their fun would extend past the official bounds of the Bet as well.

Sometimes in the past, M’rek had been a little more casual about his attire to these events. But this time, he’d made sure he was polished and looking official in his leathers when he and A’yara arrived. He wasn’t the arrogant sort to expressly want all the attention in the room when they stepped inside, but the Green rider looked good—he wanted to match. And since A’yara had not seemed displeased with the situation at all, he felt pleased with the decision.

He steered them first toward the refreshment table. The diversity of the selection always dwindled as the night wore on, which was reason enough to start there. The eggs, in contrast, certainly weren’t going anywhere. And he liked in a more personal way to see what the Brewers had offered up for the occasion.

Snagging a glass for them both, he hooked the stems between his fingers and shot A’yara a smile, disentangling his other arm just for the moment to pour. “What’s your poison?”

With so little cause for getting to dress up, there was all the more reason to do it. A’yara would get to talk about such things later on with a few choice friends who also cared about clothes, but she’d not drag M’rek into such a conversation tonight. It’d probably bore the poor Bronzer and that wasn’t what tonight was about.

When he led them toward the drinks, she peered at the table. A’yara was leery about certain drinks but it didn’t show. Instead, she smiled at M’rek and answered simply, “Something sweet.” This wasn’t medicinal. It wasn’t going to mess with her. She had to remind herself that even so, but she would have just one. Maybe two. That was probably all she’d be able to do, unless there was something particularly sweet that would remind her more of a treat and less of fellis.

While he poured the drinks, she glanced around and gave a brief smile and wave to familiar, friendly faces. Riders she was closer to than just on a name basis. A’yara noted if they’d shown up with someone, if they were alone, and if they were just standing around chatting. It’d all make for great conversation later on.

Once her drink was offered, A’yara took a tentative, curious sip and found it wasn’t too bad. Mildly sweet and didn’t burn on the way down. She’d be able to manage two such drinks, she supposed, and leaned to kiss the corner of M’rek’s mouth. “Great choice. What are you having?”

Her rider was having a fine time, just wandering and Allieth turned her full attention to the polite blue. They definitely should change something. What if some of the candidates that died last year were meant for a dragon from this clutch? She remembered Z'nel asking that and it had been a troubling thought. What is Z'nel had been killed before she hatched. Would she have found anyone else. She wasn't sure, because Z'nel was hers.

She hummed thoughtfully, I think less than last year, but there will still be injuries, maybe another couple will die if they are not careful. She had to still her tail as it twitched with the thought of a dragon hatching to find their person dieing. Surely Kalestath could control them? Or maybe they wouldn't listen to her either.

Qire grinned up at him, her nose wrinkling slightly with the smile, "Well that's good to know." Her gaze wandered around the room instead, avoiding any direct eye contact with anyone, because she didn't want to talk to anyone else really she just wanted to... take it all in. "Wasn't sure I was gonna see you either."

It was nice that he wasn't gallivanting all around the world like the other dragonriders, although if there was any way she could give that back to him, Qire would. But this still wasn't necessarily their kind of thing. Reasonably large crowds and the crappy alcohol that the brewers provided now didn't always make for a good time.

But regardless, the pair of them had been standing still for entirely too long, "C'mon let's get something to drink." She looped an arm around his waist, or as close to his waist as she could reach, and started to manoeuvre both of them towards the table. "Who knows? The brewers might've come up with something a little more appealing than last turn."
