Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

It was a great idea... Was...[ 26.02.2590 / 5PM ] Finna
« on: August 30, 2018, 11:13:39 PM »
The day had started out quite chipper. The weather had promised to be warmer than it had been before and the clouds had been chased off by a wind during the night. A clear, blue sky overhead and a warm morning seemed to be some good omen. Working at the Hall had been something Gavita had been quite eager to do. Not because she wanted to live there – which wasn’t the case – but because a lot of the Smiths she knew were going to.

Her family was quite beholden to the Weyr and stuck in what was familiar. She could respect that and understood that sense of comfort, but even they hadn’t bat an eye when Gavita had volunteered to help out. It made sense. That’s what crafters did for one another. Though Gavita didn’t know any Healer that was eager to uproot from the Weyr, so it wasn’t really expected of her family to want to leave either.

When it all went tits up, Gavita had taken a step inside to take a break. She’d been one of the lucky ones.

There were a lot of people who were not so much.

The entire day quickly turned from an optimistic work day into a harried nightmare. Gavita wasn’t part of the initial fight, she didn’t even really get to see it all, but she did get to see some of the aftermath as she was hauled up on dragon back with others that were going to be taken back to the weyr. Only after the injured, of course.

Her family had found her first. Her mother smothering her in a quick embrace before rushing off to the Healer hall to... well, tend the wounded. Her father had likewise pulled her close before following in his wife’s footsteps. Since both her parents were healers, they were going to be busy. They’d just... wanted to make sure their daughter had come back in one piece. No worse for wear.

So, the afternoon was actually quite quiet for Gavita. After touching base with the rest of her siblings, letting them all know she was alive and well, she skirted away from all the commotion and retired to her room, where her wher was waiting most impatiently. For once, Gavita was happy she’d just left Blue in her room rather than bring them along. While a wher could certainly be useful in construction work, there’d been so many volunteers in the morning he had just seemed to take up unnecessary space. Other people, with larger whers, needed theirs carried.

Gavita sat heavily on her bed, in her small room, and let Blue smother her in affection. His relief was palpable in their bond and, now that she was alone, Gavita shuddered. Letting the horror of the day, the scenes at the Hall, finally have their way with her. She hadn’t wanted her family to worry, to see how shaken she was. After all, Gavita was fine.

Or she would be.

Finna felt somewhat guilty being glad that Beach hadn’t sustained the brunt of the attack. They’d arrived to assist instead, to help clean up after the disaster and get the injured and the defenseless back to the Weyr. But after the Snakes at the Cove that had claimed other riders, she was—not that she would ever say such a thing. Despite the rivalry between the Wings, she held no real ill will toward Jungle and its riders. Their self-assurance was warranted, given their expertise. That they still suffered so during Hunter attacks was all the more sobering.

So she’d simply done what she could, her and Kimisuth lending themselves to whatever was needed of them. Not until the evening had she stopped long enough to feel tired, feeling even guiltier that she did when there were others who would not be given a reprieve for much longer than that. But Kimisuth had finally convinced her that she needed to take a break. Or at least get something to eat.

She hadn’t since that morning.

It was when Finna was on her way to the Weyr Hall that her steps faltered, and the familiar sensation of fear made her heart skip in her chest. What is it? her Blue asked immediately, concerned and half rising to his feet on their weyr ledge where he’d retreated for the time being. Kimisuth didn’t want to be in the way any more than his rider did. Are you alright?

They were both twitchy after the events of the day. //Gavita,// Finna thought back at her dragon somewhat numbly, and turned her trajectory toward tunnels different than those she’d originally been heading toward. //She’s a Smith.//

Shards, how had she not thought about that before? It would be entirely reasonable to expect that the woman had been at the Hall site when the attack happened. Finna hadn’t seen her in the Healer Hall when she was coming and going, but she hadn’t been looking either… I’m sure she’s fine… He tried to reassure her, but the uncertainty in his projection was no comfort.

She didn’t quite run to the room she knew was Gavita’s, but her steps were still hurried. Finna even hesitated outside of it, the hanging curtained door still separating her from what might—or might not—lay within. What was she even going to do if the other woman wasn’t there?

But if she was, Finna didn’t want to intrude, in case she’d been hurt or lost someone herself. So she cleared her throat to get the thickness from it, and knocked on the stone outside the doorway. “Gavita? Are you here?” Her voice carried an uncharacteristic edge to it—not a panic, but evident concern.

Gavita wasn’t crying against Blue, she was just buried in the wher. Holding him and breathing soft and shallow. It’d been such a rough day. All she could think about was how lucky she’d been, and that thought was immediately chased by survivor’s guilt. Others hadn’t been so lucky, and she’d seen exactly how unlucky.

Never mind that other bodies were just gone. Wasn’t that a real horror? Being taken away? Gavita tried not to dwell too much on how long those people had been aware when they’d been taken away.

Because her family was primarily healers, she wasn’t expecting anyone to look after her. They’d be busy. They had things far more important to do. It didn’t even occur to her that Finna would either. When she heard Finna outside though, there was a rush of relief and even, guiltily enough, excitement.

Finna was ok too. Gavita didn’t answer so much as she just shoved the curtain aside and near tackled Finna in a hug in the hallway. Wanting to hold her close, to have someone to hold. To feel another person in that moment. That it was someone that she felt... close... to made it better. It was only after a long, quiet moment that she murmured, softly, “I’m glad you’re ok.”

That sudden embrace, vigorous enough to nearly push Finna back a step until she braced against it, was the best answer she could have gotten. As the Smith’s strong arms wrapped around her, the Blue rider returned the gesture, tugging Gavita close and holding her tight. Perhaps unfairly, all her relief—that she and Kimisuth had been lucky, that her friends were okay, that Gavita was okay—ended up directed toward the other woman; Finna was reluctant to let her go, and kept her near in the hug as she really let herself process the events of the day for the first time.

She’d be content to hold Gavita as long as she’d allow. In that moment, it didn’t even occur to Finna that she might not like such overt, prolonged contact. Gavita had instigated it, after all.

Finna let out a long breath at that murmur, not so much a sigh as a release of tension and weariness. “I’m glad you’re okay too,” she replied, voice low. “I was worried you might not be here.” The rest of the sentiment didn’t seem appropriate to voice. They both knew what it might have meant if Gavita hadn’t been. But dwelling on the might-have-beens wasn’t healthy. As many things as she’d been through during the Pass, Finna knew that much.

Was it so terrible that Gavita hadn’t even thought about Finna? She’d just naturally assumed the woman would be ok, in that childish way that everyone thinks their parents won’t ever die. It hadn’t occurred until she’d seen the Blue Rider that she could’ve been injured. Hurt.

It was a jarring realization that what Finna did, or what she could be called to do, was quite dangerous. If anything, that made Gavita hold on to her all the more. Like she could stop anything from ever happening to her if she just... kept Finna close. She liked Finna. The Blue Rider was... she was nice.

When Finna expressed her own concern, Gavita made a sound of acknowledgement and shifted so she could relax a little against her. “Mm. I was there. I was just inside,” she murmured against the other woman’s neck. Of course it’d been terrifying. Hearing it all. But Gavita had been spared. This time.

It didn’t occur to Gavita that it might be awkward if they lingered in the tunnel. At that moment, she didn’t really care. It wasn’t like there was a lot of traffic down this particular hall anyway – it was a side tunnel of single members of the crafts. Most were busy, either working or helping somewhere else. Not many would be in their room during the evening. Not yet, anyway. Not until after dinner, usually.

Though today was hardly a usual day.

Finna’s arms reflexively tightened around Gavita again when she added that she had been present when the Hunters attacked. More or less. It was a frightening thought, considering how close she had been to the actual violence and how easy it would have been for this meeting to be drastically different. Or for it to not happen at all. But those huge, heavy metal doors at the Hall existed for a reason, and it was some consolation to see that they appeared to be doing the job.

She felt wearier than she’d really let herself feel all day, the hours of pushing back her own exhaustion finally catching up with her. It was a feeling Finna hadn’t missed—oh so familiar from the times during the Pass when there simply hadn’t been time to worry or grieve until her part of the Fall was over. A thing so true of so many other dragon riders she knew, they’d cultivated the ability to compartmentalize as much as possible for the simple reason of avoiding going mad. There was only so much stress that a person could handle at a time before it all became too much.

At heart, that was the reason for her largely laidback attitude now. After spending so many turns locked into an unforgiving, never-ending cycle of the same fear, apprehension, and numbness, going through some pain now seemed a rather minor price to pay to feel something at all.

“Blue’s okay too?” Finna asked after a moment, heart quickening again a bit as the thought occurred to her. That Gavita didn’t seem that level of distressed was some indication that the wher was alright, but she’d rather hear it from Gavita herself.

As though summoned by his name, the Blue wher poked his head past the curtain. He wasn’t concerned about Finna, but he had heard his name. With a rumble, he nosed at Gavita’s hip then at Finna’s side. Just to make his own presence known.

It was the wher that ultimately caused Gavita to pull away from Finna. A smile drifted across her expression, but it was a tired one. “I actually didn’t bring him with. Since he was smaller than others that were being taken down this morning I thought it’d make more sense to leave him. Sorta glad I did, now.” Gavita passed a hand over his face affectionately. What’d she do without her wher? “Though he wasn’t happy being left behind, let me just say.”

Gavita shifted her weight from one leg to the other and glanced at Finna. “Ah. If... if you have other places to be, or things to do, I don’t want to keep you. Thanks for coming to see me, though. Really.” She’d needed... this. To make sure Finna was ok and to just have someone, after it was all over, to just... see if she was ok. Gavita could’ve gone to her family, but she’d have felt terrible bothering Healers when they were already so busy. Not to say Finna’s time wasn’t important too, it was just... different.

Nice. Gavita could feel important to someone without feeling like a burden.

She couldn’t help but smile when the wher himself moved past the curtain to nose at them both. She didn’t know whers as well as she did dragons, beyond knowing their eyesight was poorer, and she’d never quite mastered knowing when one of the creatures would recognize her or not. But Blue was relaxed and accepting enough that it didn’t seem to matter much either way.

It was good to see Gavita smile too, even if the expression was no doubt as weary as Finna’s own was. “That’s lucky,” she agreed, glancing down at the Blue again as Gavita pulled away. “And no, I don’t imagine he was.” It was clear the creatures did share a bond with their handlers, even if it wasn’t as deep or vocally coherent as a dragon’s. Even Finna’s flits had been distressed today, and Kimisuth hadn’t been only because she’d been on his back nearly the whole time until she was safe back at the Weyr. No doubt Blue had been completely out of sorts, knowing he couldn’t get to Gavita when there was danger around.

“I don’t have anywhere else to be right now,” Finna answered, absently running her fingers through her hair. She probably would need a bath before she fell asleep, but the thought of dragging herself all the way down to the Springs just sounded exhausting. And while she was hungry, inerta was going to get the better of her if she allowed it. “I actually… would like to stick around for a while, if that’s okay.”

It would be good for you to be around someone, her own Blue told her softly, echoing some of the sentiment Finna felt. This wasn’t a day anyone should be alone and isolated.

Gavita wasn’t going to object to company. It didn’t bother her that her room was small. It was generally only meant for one person and not used for entertaining in. Enough space for Gavita and her wher – and just that.

However, she was tired. Bone weary. The day had been rough, and though evening was just wrapping itself around the Weyr and dinner would eventually sneak up on her, Gavita really just wanted to... well, take a nap.  Seeing that the Blue Rider seemed just as tired, Gavita glanced over her shoulder and offered, casually, “Want to come in and take a nap?” It wasn’t like they’d ever slept together before but... what was a nap between friends?

Gavita liked Finna and she was pretty damn certain the Rider liked her. So there was no harm in asking and there was no one around to know she’d asked. Which was just the way Gavita liked it.

Finna was surprised when Gavita made the offer, enough so that she actually blinked in surprise, thinking for a moment that she’d misheard. But, well… they were more or less in private. No one else had made any appearance in the hall, leaving the two women largely alone for the moment. Surely others were getting sleep, or spending time with loved ones, or helping how they could. Finna wouldn’t let herself dwell on the idea that some of them might never be returning to their rooms…

“I’d love that.” It prompted another smile from her, even if it was a little one. Taking a nap next to someone sounded comforting—and it was something they both probably needed. Already, at the promise of some sleep, Finna could feel a tired weight settling on her shoulders. “It sure beats crawling all the way back to my weyr.”

At least she wasn’t covered in blood or ichor, so she shouldn’t smell offensively in close quarters. Though no doubt the common odor of oil and leather would be present even once she stripped down to the clothes she wore under her riding gear.

Blue made a happy sound when he realized they were going to be staying and bounced back into the small room. Gavita was far too tired and shell shocked after the day to even think about anything other than laying with Finna. Just being close to her was all she wanted.

After allowing the Rider in first, Gavita shifted next to her and kicked off her boots. She was only wearing a pair of pants and a top, so she wasn’t going to strip down any more than that. Not when they were just going to have a nap. Gavita really wasn’t trying to turn this into anything more than what it was – being close and offering some manner of comfort while they both relaxed. The idea of being alone after such a horrific day wasn’t a great one, but she’d have settled with sleeping on the floor curled up with Blue if Finna hadn’t come along.

Her bed was a single, but Gavita didn’t take up much space and if she slept on her side, both her and Finna would easily have enough space. Cozy for a nap. Knowing that she’d be winding down, Gavita yawned as she slid on the furs then stretched out, patting the space in front of her with a small smile.

Spoiler for OOC:
If you want, you can carry it to them waking up. Otherwise, I will

Gavita’s room was small in a cozy kind of way, but that didn’t bother Finna. She’d never been the sort to be claustrophobic; rather, there was some comfort to her in the shelter of the Weyr’s walls. It reminded her more of when she and Kimisuth had been crammed into the Weyrling Barracks at Fort, or the turns she’d shared a weyr with B’tron. That nearness was something that she often missed.

Like Gavita, she wasn’t intending to turn this into anything more. She was too tired to give the Smith the attention she really deserved if that were the goal here. And more than anything, she did just want to nap in a warm bed next to another person. So though she stripped out of her leathers and pulled off her boots—shoving the whole pile into as small a space as possible—Finna left on her loose, short-sleeved shirt and soft pants.

She waited for Gavita to slide onto the furs, watching her with a likewise faint but answering smile before joining her on the bed. Shards, how long had it been since she’d crammed into a bed this small with someone? It was like being a Candidate all over again. But there was a lightness to that vague nostalgia that was comforting too. Snuggling close, she even draped an arm over Gavita’s side, just to idly touch her.

Sleep was, at the very least, quick and deep.

---O---

Rising out of it again was more difficult. Finna wasn’t sure what had woken her in the first place, but the cobwebs of unconsciousness didn’t seem to want to go away. Blinking slowly even in the dim light of the room, it took her a moment to remember where she was, and why. She stifled a lingering yawn once she did, and cracked one eye open to see if her shifting had woken Gavita too.

What time was it? Tucked away in a tiny room deep within the mountain, it was impossible to say. And a brief mental exploration proved that Kimisuth, too, had fallen asleep. Finna decided she’d let him sleep. She didn’t have anywhere else to be for the time being. Probably.

Gavita must’ve been more tired than she realized. It wasn’t but a breath or two after she’d wrapped herself against Finna, quite unashamed in her desire to be close, that she quickly fell asleep. The stress of the attack, of surviving, of witnessing the aftermath... All of it had just been such a drain. Even the relief of being fine, of finding her family had been fine – and the rush of survivor’s guilt – all of it was just a weight that had served to pull her down.

It might’ve barely been dinner time, but it’d felt like she’d been awake for days.

When she did fall asleep, it was dark, dreamless, and restful.

She probably wouldn’t have woken at all when Finna moved save when the Rider had moved, it’d freed up one of Gavita’s arms that had found it’s way under her – and thus returning feeling to it. The appendage protested with a sharp tingling and she had to shift and sit up to grant her arm feeling. Even so, she smiled lazily at Finna. “Great nap.” She had absolutely no idea what the time might be, but neither did she care. It wasn’t like the Weyr was going to return to some normal schedule after the day.

Her tingling hand idly came to rest on Finna’s hip as she eventually asked, after a yawn, “Are you hungry? Because I am quite ravenous.”

The sheer normalcy and comfort of waking up next to another, and then watching them rise up out of sleep too, made Finna smile some. For a moment, it was almost enough to forget the horrors of the day. And when Gavita settled her hand on her hip and mentioned food, the Blue Rider was eager to grab at that further sense of ease. The rest of it didn’t bear thinking about for now. Guilty as that might have made her feel many turns ago, she knew now that sometimes you had to just forget about things for a while. In a Pass filled with so much loss, it was the only way to stay sane at times.

“It was an excellent nap,” she agreed, and laughed as she stifled a stray yawn. Shifting, she snuggled a little closer, and mirrored Gavita by resting her own hand on the woman’s side. It was an idle affectionate gesture, but not one meant to hint at more for now. It still didn’t seem like the time.

“Food sounds great too.” While Finna hadn’t been—and usually wasn’t—aware of her hunger when she first woke up, someone else drawing attention to it certainly sent it to the forefront of her thoughts. In truth, she was half surprised her stomach didn’t growl just to drive the point home. Of a sudden, she was incredibly cognizant of the near-uncomfortable ache there telling her that she needed to eat something.

“I think I could eat a whole herdbeast right now,” she added with a chuckle. But she’d be satisfied with whatever the Weyr Hall kitchens were serving at this hour.

Gavita was hungry, but she wasn’t exactly motivated to get up and run from the warmth of her small bed either. If anything, she gripped Finna’s hip a little more and nestled closer to the Rider. She couldn’t go back to sleep, not just yet, but she wanted to wallow in the companionable warmth and quiet just a little longer.

Her eyes were partially open, sleepily so, and remained that way until Finna made mention that she was hungry and food did sound good. They couldn’t remain hidden in Gavita’s room forever, after all. Time would keep crawling by and they’d have to deal with... all of it.

She passed a hand over her face and groaned a little, mostly in dramatic protest, before Gavita actually sat up. “I’m sure there’s going to be all manner of little treats in the kitchen.” It was something they usually did after a rough day. Put out some sweet rolls, extra strong klah, and maybe even some pies. Like they knew some people took solace in food and tried to provide what little extras they could.

Gavita loved the kitchen staff all the more for it. “Maybe not an entire herdbeast, though,” she teased, grinning some at Finna. All the more thankful, then, that the Rider had stayed with her. Everything was fine, and normal, and okay. And it’d be fine.

The island was just dangerous, and they got a rough reminder of that.

Even hungry as she was, Finna would have been happy to lay in the warm bed with Gavita for another handful of candlemarks. The easy physical closeness of another person comforted her more than just about anything else, with the exception of maybe snuggling up with Kimisuth where he slept in their weyr. But reluctant though she was, she did sit up too once Gavita had. A bit rumpled from sleep even as the Smith was, she still looked oh so good to Finna. Shame it wasn’t a happier occasion that had found them curled up together.

“I guess that will have to do.” A quiet grin spread across her mouth at Gavita’s bit of teasing. In reality, she would just be thankful for whatever the kitchen did provide. As scarce as food had been during the Pass and even now at times, she had the utmost respect for how much they managed to stretch their resources and still feed a whole Weyr and some change. There were always those that would bitch about what was on offer, but Finna had never been one of those sort of people.

Stretching a little, Finna stifled yet another yawn against the back of her hand. “Fuck.” Which prompted a low laugh from her. “Hard to believe I’m still tired. Or maybe I’m just having trouble waking up.”
