Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Magnetic Everything [14.07.2591, 4:30 PM] Flight
« on: October 04, 2018, 01:26:33 PM »
Summer’s grasp on the island was giving way to the short fall. The Turn was drawing to a close, and today it felt as though the wind was ushering it in all the more quickly. That meant a few things, now that C’dus paused to think on it. First and foremost, maybe it explained his dragon’s behavior these last days.

Tilioth had always been a jealous creature. If his attention wandered too far away from her, the Green was nearly too loathsome to be around. Normally, she reserved this possessiveness just for him, but the scale seemed to tip when the day came that Imyth was caught by a Black dragon. It was one thing for Kalestath to have one, but this securely claimed male (a male that she may have fancied on more than one occasion) had her sour for weeks.

Until… today.

Today the wind whispered promises to the both of them. Their ground weyr felt more cut off than usual and C’dus found himself missing the company of roommates. He realized, too, that he was missing more than just casual friendship. Today he missed sex, something he hadn’t allowed himself to think on too often in the long months that he’d been a weyrling. Exercise felt like a relief and days like today, training in the weyrbowl, were his haven.

His afternoon was spent watching Tilioth as they went through their paces. She was quieter than usual, but he felt something like determination from her. It was almost foreboding, and maybe it might’ve been worse were he not prepared for this. There were definite perks to being from a dragonrider family, and his weyrling master had filled in everything else.

/Are you waiting for any particular moment before you rise?/ His question was coy but also interlaced with impatience. Dinner was soon, he didn’t want to be mid-meal when his Green chose that moment to make her needs public. Not that he minded public displays of affection, but he wanted to look more prepared than just another newly fledged Greenrider. It would be a different kind of taboo compared to events in the past (and shards, he hoped he’d never commit an offense like Hiakimth and Nalise) but would nonetheless put unwanted attention on him.

He wasn’t some wherry-brained and adled Greenrider, he was more than that. And stereotypes be damned, he and Tilioth both would prove that to themselves and to many more.

Fine. she said, with a decisiveness that had him turning and looking to where she was in the weyrbowl. Her eyes were steadily churning toward purple and C’dus found his own heartbeat quickening.

He adored her in that moment, truly. Her hide could never shine like some dragons, but there was a depth of richness to her that spoke of something more. She had pose and posture, she was sleek and strong and Rukbat offered a single ray of sunshine through the cloud cover, just for her. /We can’t afford the herdbeasts, don’t be like some daft skycourser./

Tilioth didn’t respond, not in the mental sense. Instead, she pushed up from the packed earth and vaulted into the light casting down on her.

I am here, and I will be yours, but you must catch me first. Her broadcast contained none of the weight that a Gold commanded, but her demand nonetheless was there.

C’dus bowed with a dramatic flourish to those around him, weyrlings training like he. “This interruption brought to you by the ever lovely Tilioth and yours truly,” and he nearly skipped back to his ground weyr before Tilioth got too ahead of herself.

The closer they got to graduation, the harder it was not to give in to Corvath's insistence that they just skip all the drills they were still tasked with. The constant repetition was proving tedious, and while M'lan knew why they needed to refine and practice what had been taught, Corvath just wanted to go.

Today, he'd been a little less inclined to duck away and find something more entertaining to do, though his focus was not there and they'd copped more than a few scolding remarks from peers and the weyrlingmasters alike. //What's your problem Corvath? We're never going to get out of here if you keep flying into the others M'lan growled as he urged Corvath away from their current wing formation to reset his position. He was disrupting the dragons who were behaving, the bristling urge to start a fight plucking away at their bond with little care for the consequences.

I want to catch something  Corvath hissed in response, flexing his claws as he swung back into the wing formation. There was a bite to his tone that suggested he was talking about hunting or similar, though without the faintest hint of hunger in the bond there was little chance of that happening.

They were landing before M'lan figured out hout to mollify him, slipping off and keeping a hand on his forearm as a way of grounding him... futile though it may be if the black decided to fly off anyway with the jungle and the ocean both singing their promise of flesh to be rended.

His tension didn't fade while Wa'by gave instructions for the next drill, claws kneading the ground like a baker kneading bread but with none of the care.

When Corvath stilled, M'lan prepared for the mental battle of wills that would be forthcoming, ready  to talk him out of whatever had caused the sudden shift in his behaviour.

When nothing changed, M'lan found himself searching for what it was that had caught Corvath's attention, his neck arched and looking off towards a different part of the weyrbowl.

Which was when M'lan noticed Tilioth poised at the focal point of Corvath's gaze, still for a moment as if waiting for herself to be noticed by the males that were about to chase. He didn't bother giving Corvath permission to be one of them, knowing all to well that the black would chase regardless of M'lan's opinion.

The desire to catch and claim the green started to filter through their bond, not as strongly as when Imyth had risen, but just about as enticing for the weyrling and dragon both. Very well. Corvath purred, though there was little warmth to the tone, a dangerous, harsh note to it instead that promised he would meet her requirements with little care for his competition.

M'lan barely got out of his way before Corvath was taking off after Tilioth, his sheer size delaying his ascension as he slammed his wings downward, not quite as experienced as an older dragon despite their drills at getting off the ground from a standstill but also not wanting to waste time with a running (or falling) start.

Had Tilioth been a gold the lack of a rest from drills would limit his chances of catching, but greens promised a shorter chase, and for the moment his wings only felt as though they were suitably stretched to carry him to her.

M'lan, far more aware of himself than when Corvath chased Imyth was lucid enough to hear C'dus's declaration, snorting in amusement at what was said. He didn't need permission to follow the green weyrling back to his weyr, flights were unavoidable at this point, with many of the greens reaching sexual maturity and the males just as inclined to chase as they were to rise.

He fell in step behind C'dus, keeping a suitable distance behind so as not to crowd the kid but unable to stop some of the possessiveness Corvath exuded from quickening his pace. Win or lose, sex woukd be a welcome reprieve from drills, though for his own sanity he wanted Corvath to succeed. A period of time with a green post-fl iught would surely smooth out some of the harshness of their bond at least for a time.

With the amount of Green Dragons in the Weyr, it wasn’t so much that they weren’t ever present for a Flight so much as W’sar didn’t usually have the energy to participate. Nor Sath. They had a lot on their plate, tending to what their Wing needed, a list of things B’lye had made for them to take care of, on top of eventually take off from the Weyr themselves.

Even so, some days Sath became restless. He wasn’t dead after all and the Brown liked flying around with other dragons if for no other reason than he didn’t get to do so often.

W’sar had decided to join the majority of the Weyr for dinner when his attention, and his dragon’s, was idly snagged by such a greenpair. W’sar had decided to sit at the Beach Wing table, so he was privy to a handful of colorful and fun remarks about others that wanted to go after the Green.

It would be fun, the Brown added, standing up on his ledge and stretching his wings. It was a windy day but that hardly mattered to a Brown as experienced in the air as Sath. There wasn’t a type of weather he hadn’t flown in. Even handicapped as he was, a bit of wind wasn’t going to bother him at all.

//Yeah, yeah. Take to the sky then.// W’sar answered as he picked up his tray to clean up after his dinner. Sath, delighted, did just that. He kept higher up than the others might and gave them all a wide berth. It was for the best, assessing where she might go, since he was blind in one eye. Once the chase started, he’d maintain much the same position. Higher up, if he could, and distanced from the others. That hadn’t ever stopped him from winning before – Sath could fly for days – and if nothing else, it’d still be a thrilling flight.

W’sar followed a couple others toward the Green Rider’s weyr and found a place out of the way along the wall, much like his dragon. He wasn’t one of those over eager, hovering sort. He was quite content to lean against the stone wall and wait, as his dragon did, until the pretty Green would take to the sky and the chase would start.

Rhymoth's attention turned from the the cove as he heard something that Z'ryr apparently did not. The brown's eyes swirling faster as he scanned the skies for... something. Z'ryr, who was more focussed on the fish in front of him, was not paying attention until Rhymoth came lumbering back to him, causing some fishers to scatter hastily from his path.

A green rises. I should like to chase. Z, who hadn't been particularly enjoying gutting fish, stabbed the knife into the edge of the table, wiped his hands on his trousers, and took towards Rhymoth at a short jog without a word of reply. Z'ryr had made the mistake of volunteering to help with some of the gutting, apparently they were short on fishers or... something. He hadn't particularly cared at the time, the person asking had seemed genuine, but after a mark or so, Z'ryr couldn't say he'd been enjoying the task. It certainly wasn't the worst thing he could be doing, but a chase of a green seemed like a much more enjoyable way to wile away the next few hours.

As soon as Rhymoth approached the Weyr bowl proper, Z'ryr spotted the few stragglers making their way into a ground floor Weyr. A Weyrling?

Soon-to-be-not. Rhymoth replied cheerfully, although technically they both knew that the green would be studying for another few months, everything changed after your first flight.

Z'ryr didn't keep track of the multitude of green flights that occurred, and hadn't bothered to do the math on any of the Weyrlings, it wasn't like he had someone he was waiting for. But this was the first Weyrling he personally had chased, so he expected they'd be seeing many more in the coming months. The blacks who had risen for Imyth's flight had certainly opened the flood gates.

Rhymoth dropped him not far before spinning around crooning up at Tilioth, It would be my pleasure to follow your beautiful hide through the sky.

Z'ryr slipped into the Weyrling's Weyr and took a spot in the corner, smiling lightly.

He felt exhilarated and giddy and so justified in those emotions that the grin plastered across his face wasn’t likely to fade. A less confident rider might treat this moment with some trepidation, but not C’dus. He who hadn’t afforded himself the luxury of crushes, had hardly batted his eyelashes or uttered a single flirtatious thing in so long. It had perhaps been the most challenging thing in his life. Given the nature of flights, it wasn’t likely he’d have very much time to appreciate any of the riders, but the quick survey of those gathering in his weyr had him thanking Faranth for the demanding lifestyle they all lived. It sure made for some well shaped folk.

Tilioth had underestimated the wind. In the shelter of the weyrbowl things had felt calm, but as soon as she was at and above the lip of the mountain she was at the sky’s mercy. Here the gusts met no rock resistance and she had to focus on keeping herself centered. Her wings tucked back, her sails flaring as much as they could with every downbeat. She could not afford to look back and admire those that followed, but she heard most of them well enough. Corvath’s single response heightened her desire to fly, and she experienced a feeling that she thought a wherry or herdbeast might before it is struck down. It didn’t scare her, but it did encourage her.

She felt others watching and calculating. She hissed something of a challenge, but surely the wind would shred it before it had any impact.

You can’t simply follow, she told them all, though it was more in response to Rhymoth, you have to catch.

probably gonna do maybe 2 more rounds of posts and then figure a winner, assuming nothing flashy happens :D

Sath knew the wind was going to be a challenge long before they broke the relative safety of the mountain bowl. Being a bigger dragon didn’t necessarily afford him, at base, an easier time but he did have bigger wings. His experience leant a great deal of help too. He road the winds up, not fighting the weather but using it as much as he could to drift up and up and up. Wanting to try and maintain a higher general position than those that might likewise chase.

Just to prevent crashes.

Sath thrummed and was eager to follow, but that sound would be lost to the whistle of the wind past him. He didn’t respond to her declaration, but he was quick to prove to her that he would be close, that he would tail her through the winds. He innately knew the small green would give up far sooner in this wind and demanding sky than his wings ever would.

Sath hoped to be the one to catch her.

W’sar’s eyes partially closed as he leaned against the wall, giving himself to the thrill of the chase. This was the part he really enjoyed, after all. Experiencing the biting wind against Sath’s skin like it was his own. Seeing the vast expanse of the sky and their prize not far off. Being cradled in the wind with nothing but their broad wings to keep them aloft. This was fine, this wind and weather wouldn’t stop them.

They’d been through worse. It wasn’t so much the arrogance of a bronze, but the simple assurance of a dragon who had experienced similar and knew that he could navigate and fly, so long as he wasn’t around the cluster of other males that would likely foul his own wings or accidentally get forced into his space with either their own inexperience or how forceful the wind was being.

Rhymoth crooned back happily, taking Tilioth's response as an invitation, rather than an admonishment. It would be my pleasure.

The brown too, knew the thrashing wind would be a challenge, but didn't think to compare his chances to the others deciding to chase. If he did, he likely would have placed himself near to the more experienced, but certainly not one of the most. New Weyrlings were chasing their clutchmate too, so he had an advantage over them, but certainly not over any bronzes who had chosen to chase. But it wasn't in his nature to overanalyse during a flight, not wanting to take himself out of the moment even for a second.

He strove against the wind as much as he could, slowed by it to begin with, and buffeted a few times upwards and out of the pack momentarily. But with Tilioth in his eyes, he bore down, gaining as he became more familiar with how to fight with the wind and not against it. He wanted to win. He wanted to win her and he didn't want to let anything stop him.

Z'ryr gazed around the room, and briefly assessed that the green's rider was young, cute and enough of his type that he would be really quite pleased if Rhymoth won.

Corvath snarled into the wind as the flight took him away from the shelter of the bowl, a noise intended for the wind that restricted his power and the males who also hoped to claim the green. They had done drills in similar weather, but he needed to concentrate on exactly what he was doing for longer than a more experienced dragon to get his positioning just so to limit the gusty effects.

It slowed him down, but he was not out of the race, managing to angle his wings correctly after the brief struggle and cupping enough with his wings to bring him back to a distance more suitable for being an actual contender.

Had Tilioth been inclined for acrobatics, Corvath would have little chance under the conditions they were in, but with her goal being to get as far away from them as she could, it was easier than it could have been to stay on her tail. His wings had already started to ache with the strain of fighting the wind, but he was pushing through, determined to catch her quickly before his stamina gave out.

While the pull of a green wasn't quite as all-consuming as a gold, Corvath still snapped at the limb of a male who got too close, aggression and flight lust not too far from one another for him. M'lan was at least lucid enough to caution the black, urging him to focus on his goal rather than the competitors, his own eagerness for Corvath to catch Tilioth lending weight to the instruction.

She felt sufficiently chased, that was for sure. Up and up and up, every pump of her wings harder than the last. The purple of her eyes was bleeding into red, angry now that she’d been denied a kill. If she’d blooded, this could have been a real battle. Her physical talent wasn’t going to win her any further favors, something had to give.

/Let’s bring them back down,/ C’dus suggested. He felt terribly lightheaded. He couldn’t remember them flying this high before and the thinning atmosphere had her, and therefore his, concentration slipping. C’dus would not allow her to level out and bring her suitors somewhere other than over the bowl, but he did not want her to go any higher.

He felt her fight him, but her strength was failing fast and she did not want to give any of the males an advantage in her distraction. She calculated the moment, waiting for the wind to swell and for the other dragons to surely try to take advantage of it. As it came, she brought her own wings in tight and twisted down in a somersault motion. C’dus’s stomach plummeted and he stumbled back until his back met the wall, or his bed, or whatever rider happened to be in the way.

Tilioth shot down like an arrow. Her slight form, wings tucked and limbs pulled in, provided little resistance to the gusts that she hoped were wracking the larger dragons. She knew that gravity would favor them, but if she managed to get a head start this whole affair might last a little longer. She wasn’t sure what would happen if she reached the ground at this speed, but then the pair of them had never been known for holding back.

Sath trailed higher than the green until she went too high. Thin air never did a dragon any good, so he flared his wings, let the others pass, and canted himself so that he could trail her somewhere a little lower. Easier to breathe, easier to watch. The wind held him aloft, miniscule wing adjustments keeping Sath where he wanted to be. His head twisted so that he could ever keep an eye on her. It didn’t even occur to the Brown that she’d be caught this high up.

When she started the dive, she hung, for just a moment. Graceful, suspended, then the world sped up and he was after her. Like chasing a wherry. Sath spilled the air from his wings and let gravity pull him down. Any time the wind sought to pull him off course, a flap of a wing, a flick of his tail, kept him on track. Sath could dive. He had to hunt when he was away from the Weyr and knew how to catch those that did not want to be caught.

W’sar took a deep breath when he felt Sath, felt them, prepare for the dive. Shoulders tensed, he felt the familiar flip in his body that always happened as the world turned and the sky rushed by. He didn’t lose his footing, didn’t lose where he was, but it was so damned difficult not to feel dazed. Vertigo was real during a flight. Feeling solid on the ground but not in your own mind. W’sar let his dragon do the flying, though. Sath knew better than he, he was just along for the thrilling ride.

Rhymoth was too caught up in the trance of the chase to think about strategy now. Instead his goal was just to follow, close enough that he imagined he could turn to pull her from the sky should be try to dart past him. But beyond that, his thoughts were only to keep chasing, to keep her firmly in his sights, because even if he tried, he didn't think he'd be able to look away from her.

As it was, he was caught momentarily by surprised by her dive, enough so that he bugled excitedly as he snapped his wings in to follow her. It was thrilling, knowing that she was bringing them on such a chase. Again, he was placed firmly behind her, not exactly a strategic move, if she did anything too fancy he'd be above her and unable to grab her, but he was slowly gaining upon her, being dragged towards the ground as they plummeted.

Z'ryr placed a hand on the wall behind him, grounding himself even as he felt the rush of wind and the feeling that you were leaving your organs in the air behind you. Grinning even as closed his eyes to the room (which certainly wasn't moving), Z'ryr couldn't help but be reminded of how much he loved flights.

The only acknowledgement Corvath granted the thinnning air was the need to exert more effort in his wings, though M'lan found himself feeling lightheaded in an entirely different way, breathing deeper to catch the air that Corvath was lacking, not that he tried to curb the dragon's eagerness. On pure strength Corvath was better than Tilioth, each powerful wingbeat powering him forward a reasonable distance with half the effort she would have exherted, like someone with longer legs outpacing a shorter person... Not that it did him much good, a low, rumbling growl testement to his frustration that she continued to stay ahead of him, no matter how he strained his wings.

He sensed the swelling upwind before it reached him, adjusting his wings to best catch it and certain in his ability to finish the flight with the extra boost. Except Tilioth had other plans.

Corvath snarled his frustration as he tried to cut the green off before she passed him, realising too late that she'd prepared to dive and claws instead snatching om air where he'd hoped to catch hide. What came next was no controlled dive, the black simply stopping mid flap and letting his weight push him down. It wasn't an effective start, but he managed to twist and angle himself somewhat better for what he was trying to achieve.

M'lan was facing an entirely different predicament, Corvath's frustration the only reason he knew the encounter was unintended. As Tilioth dove, their rider had stumbled backwards, and for a splot second M'lan considered ignoring flight ettiquette completely and not bothering to see if Corvath could catch Tilioth... But he was not quite so lost to flight lust to know that was a bad idea, and managed a "Careful" that was far more angry than he had intended before he was backing away, clenching his fist to brace himself as Corvath embraced his freefall.

Just gonna let M'lan be the one C'dus bumps into Hope that's OK
