Southern Winds has plotted events roughly every OOC week. This means our story is ever evolving and Southern Winds is changing. Events for the current month are listed here, once you've registered for an account.

Our roleplay time is pretty fluid. We allow you to play anything that may have happened in the past, but not in the future, as events that may affect the entire weyr may ruin futuristic plots.

We list Flights, Clutches, and Hatchings for both Dragons and Whers here, though not for firelizards.  There are Candidate events, Weyrling classes, Holder plots, and Crafthall developments -- a little bit of something for everyone.

See previous events here!

Offline J'ken

The last few weyrlings trickled into the commons with yawns and J'ken smiled at them and just nodded to free seats as he looked over his charges. Some of the faces grinned back, wide awake, others were clearly fighting sleep or had just been woken. The dragons, like the new riders were in varying states of alertness from not present and likely sleeping in the barracks through dozing at their riders feet all the way to trying to climb their riders. Which was just as he expected and it was reassuring that he wasn't being presented with anything out of place on his second day. A full clutch still sleeping or all of them charging around would have been far more suspicious.

“Well, I said I'd give you a day, congratulations, that day is up.” His smile turned into a grin. “And here I have your schedule. I know, just what you all wanted.” He gestured with a flourish to the slate that was on the table beside him and whisked the cloth off it. Not that he'd covered it to keep it hidden, more to stop the chalk from being brushed off by curious dragons that were investigating everything new they saw. "Make a note of it, I give it a few hours tonight before it's been brushed off."

“For now, your main training slot is to keep feeding, oiling and working on your bond. But watch this space,” he tapped the slate, “that will be changing very soon.” As soon as he finalised the lesson plans in fact and let the more knowledgeable weyrlingmasters look it over - so likely within few days.

He looked around the room, trying to put names to faces without too much success. Yesterday afternoon had already become a haze of meat bowls, oil buckets, and happy faces bonded with multicoloured flashes of hide. “Also, there are sixty-four of you, so forgive me if I take a few days to remember all your names. Just tell me again if I seem to be struggling. If you ever need to speak to me, my office is down the corridor, third room. If I'm not in, have your dragon bespeak Tadriath.”

“Now, I know you were all candidates but it's quite possible with the different ages between you all you never really interacted with each other. That will be changing now. For the next two years, these are your wingmates, so try and get to know each other. Training will be easier without arguments and with being able to trust your wingmates. So, if you have any questions for me, now is the time to ask, otherwise, mingle and socialise.”

Spoiler for ooc:
Tried to leave it open as to what state weyrling and dragons are in so you can set your own pace of adjustment. Any questions your weyrlings might have, ask away. Otherwise, another chance to mingle and chat at random. Make all the friends!

Getting up early wasn’t new for Vassatiere. Candidates didn’t sleep all day either. But waking up with a sleep dragon was still hard. Ysolth was sluggish and slow, insisting that she not leave him behind, which just made her own thoughts feel fuzzy. Not as bad as when they’d first connected – but it was still noticeable. He was tired and she knew that. He didn’t have to tell her. Vassatiere could also, somehow, tell that it was her dragon that was tired and not her. It was an odd sense of detached sleepiness.

It still made focusing difficult. Especially since Ysolth just kept talking to her in that sly whispering voice of his. That was not the voice of a young dragon, but the tempting murmur of someone that was going to get her in trouble. Always. It didn’t matter that he was just talking about other people, he just always sounded like he was up to something.

Hearing him never failed to make her smile.

I don’t understand why you have to do things if I’m just going to be asleep. What if I want to be apart of what you’re doing? he complained and not for the first time as they both made their way into the commons. He hadn’t wanted carried this morning, insisting that walking would help him wake.

It didn’t make sense, but Vassatiere was nearly overwhelmed with emotion that he was so insistent on being there with her, for her. He wanted to be apart of everything she did. Sleeping, eating, and in this case, morning lessons. Ysolth couldn’t fathom sleeping in a room that she wasn’t in and it... that sort of affection, unspoken and so utterly upfront, had caught her off guard.

Vassatiere found a seat toward the back. She didn’t want to try and navigate around others. Ysolth climbed up her, mindful of his claws, and settled on her lap. Vassatiere resisted the urge to pull him to her and simply laid her hands on him, settling for touch. “You really don’t have to be here,” she murmured softly. She had yet to master talking to him mentally.

Ysolth tilted his head and eyed her. She felt like she was being scolded with just a look. Disapproval and annoyance radiated from him. I said I wanted to be here and I am. Quit it. He ended with a nip to her knee. It hurt – his teeth were sharp – but she smiled more so for the stinging reprimand and snappy disapproval.

He was so sweet.

When the Weyrlingmaster Assistant started talking, Vassatiere dutifully paid attention. Ysolth tried for a couple of moments before he simply settled on her and drifted off. Scheduling was hardly something he cared about and he would rely on his more attentive bonded to remember such things.

Looking it over, Vassatiere found herself mentally repeating it so she would remember it. When he said to socialize, her eyes went a little wider and she glanced at those closest to her as though afraid they might try and talk to her.

She was awful at talking to people.

Thrane was already on his way to the commons before the call went out to the new werylings that their morning lessons were going to start. Thrane had always been an early riser and had never been one to be anything less then early to meetings or lessons. He enjoyed getting his choice of seat and being a student his instructors could count on to be there to help with just about anything.

He was lucky that his bronze was no different.

Thrane, are the others going to be at the meeting? I really don't want to be near them right now since I am sure they will all be sleepy and annoying...

Thrane will chuckle as he replies mentally to his bonded, something that had come quite naturally to him. I assume they will be there, Theulth. We just need to remember no matter how obnoxious they are, they are still our wingmates, alright?

The bronze will snort once as they enter the commons. Thrane will nod to the weyrling master's assistant as he takes a seat in the second row. "Good morning, J'ken. I hope you and your blue are doing well this morning." He will cut off his speech as more weyrlings wander in, contenting himself to petting the bronze head in his lap.

He and his bronze listened intently as the weyrling master spoke, Thrane carefully cataloging the schedule in his mind. Right, some of this would be changing, but he was glad that he at least had something to plan his day around. Theulth kept his eyes ahead, only turning to look coolly at other dragonets who he noticed were looking at him.

Once the order was given that they were supposed to stay and socialize, both dragon and rider groaned internally. Great... More unstructured time to deal with children... He thought, cracking a smile when his bronze echoed the feeling. So once they were dismissed, he immediately stood and went over to the Weyrlingmaster's assistant. "J'ken, could Theulth and I have a quick word with you concerning our living arrangements..." His bronze hurried after him, eyes settling into a yellowy-orange as he came to sit next to his rider.

Nicynth ricocheted off one her siblings with a cheerful, absentminded Sorry! as they entered the commons and Xaeybl grinned, feeling nothing but fond indulgence for the clumsy dragonet that she’d bonded. Xaeybl honestly wouldn’t have cared if Nicynth had two left feet--I might, Nicynth speculated, not sounding in the least bit concerned--the tiny dragonet was perfect just the way she was.

Xaeybl knocked shoulders with Naeharie, and headed towards the front where she snagged a chair. Nicynth leaned up against her shins, chirping in cheerful greeting to J’ken as they settled down to listen. The schedule was what she’d been expecting, and she glanced around the room as they were dismissed to mingle. She recognized more people than she actually knew, so it would be good to start putting names to faces.

She stood, stretching absently, and watched their roommate walk over to talk to J’ken, raising a brow when she overheard the topic of discussion. What could possibly be wrong with his living arrangements. She glanced at Naeharie to see what he made of the situation.

Naeharie had spent the majority of their walk in looking at the ground, studying its every scuff, crack and pebble for the magical door that would allow him to pass peacefully and quietly into another dimension. The universe failed to open itself up to him. This was not unexpected, but it was certainly unwelcome. His focus on Xaeybl's feet had kept him moving in the right direction.

They're not that frightening. The dragon, Naeharie's new bonded, had chiefly been keeping his eyes on Nicynth, watching as she propelled herself scattershot through the halls like as if an extremely erratic hunter were giving her chase, seemingly prepared to jump in but not yet seeing the need. But his mind stayed close and warm to Naeharie; he seemed more solid and dependable, fresh out the egg, than most adults Naeharie had interacted with for over a decade.

Granted, that bar was set fairly low.

Liorith could catch his emotional drift, if you say so, without him even needing to articulate it. He rubbed once against his leg, and followed Naeharie after Xaeybl. Hers was one of the few touches that didn't make his skin itch, and he knocked back against her, absorbing the first schedule with equanimity. He liked having things written on a nice slate. Where could be acquire such a nice slate?

The meeting was too brief, and then they are all left to talk among themselves. The only person he was really interested in socializing with was already right beside him, so he followed her gaze to--ah, was their new roommate trying to make a break for it already? Naeharie hadn't even said anything to him. To his recollection, he hadn't even blinked. Or, really, moved at all. Sometimes they can't see you if you don't move.

mammoth as the mountain peaks, far too strong for you, he sleeps nearby but should he try, he's one and you are two.

Delicately, Liorith said, This is less pleasing than your others. Also, we are four, Nik and I will also dispatch him.

Liorith was right. Peaks did not rhyme with tries, he had lost the scheme. He still liked the internal rhyme in the third line, though; he should try to salvage it. He supposed if he were using this to remember his new roommate's name, he ought to have the name in it somewhere, too. Liorith was a good workshop partner.

I'm concerned you've sailed 'round the actual point I was making.

Naeharie gave a small, friendly shrug to his dragon, and mirrored Xaeybl's raised eyebrows, pursing his lips knowingly. With any luck at all Xaeybl would be offended enough by whatever next came out of their roommate's mouth and challenge him to honorable combat. He nodded a little in his direction, indicating they might keep a closer ear.

Though he was only one day old, Karrimuth wasn't shy about Veryk knowing exactly what was going on. When he wasn't lucid enough to follow his bonded, he was coaxing them to come back to the room for sleep, demanding to be fed, or insisting that his hide be oiled now.

And Veryk loved every second.

Though much of the hatching aftermath had been spent getting acquainted with the weyrlings in their room and settling into their new lot in life, day two was the start of something akin to a routine, and with Veryk trying to separate Karrimuth's feelings from their own, come eight PM they were too exhausted to even consider joining in on the weyr socialisation.

Which didn't seem to matter to their assistant weyrlingmaster who had them all attend the barracks common area to dfill in what they'd yet to be told... Or so they assumed.

The challenge was getting there first, particularly with Karrimuth grumbling that he needed to be with them, nevermind how exhaustion tugged at their bond to bely just how much the black needed to sleep there and then... Had Veryk oiled him instead of attending to the barracks as requested, they would have not been surprised for Karrimuth to fall asleep before they were done. As it was, just the walk to the classroom was proving tiresome.

Which is why the sharp anger that pierced their bond with Karrimuth went unchecked for a moment, cutting through tbe grogginess and difficult not to just embrace in light of the energy it had provided.

It didn't matter that the small. green had apologised the second she bumped Karrimuth, the black's reaction was swifter, a hissing snarl and a swiping paw helping Veryk identify the source.

Karrimuth was snarling at his green clutchmate, all feet back on the ground now that he'd made his discontent clear. Tread carefully next time. he hissed, posturing for the moment and fully prepared to lash out again should the green or any other dragonet deem it necessary to encroach on his space once again.

"Alright Karrimuth." Veryk spoke calmly, the edge to their voice dissipating quickly as Karrimuth's own mood shifted, the angry red tint to his eyes not fading, but a green calm starting to seep in at Veryk's reassuring touch.

Once they were certain there was nothing else to concern themselves, Veryk stsrted walking again, though they were slower this time, making sure to keep pace with Karrimuth lest another dragon decide to spark his ire. By the time they actually reached a desk, Karrimuth was once again exuding a sleepy calm, stretching out in the space they could and only an odd undercurrent of awareness lettung Veryk know he was not sleepy enough to let another dragon step on him.

Even without Karrimuth's idle thoughts shifting around their bond, no real substance to them beyond a general feeling, Veryk had a hard time paying attention to J'ken. It wasn't until they heard that they were to socialise with one another that their attention shifted. Rather than move around, however, they simply leant over to the weyrling beside them, laughter lacing their tone as they spokd.

"So what're you in for?"

D'vik had never in his life been so sleepy. Usually he was either asleep or awake, with little to no in between. But now, with Heppath's consciousness melded alongside his own, he was dragged into fits of drowsiness that he simply didn't know what to do with, didn't know how to function with. Thankfully, Heppath was direct in her wants and needs, all of which were currently pretty simple: food, sleep, itches and 'ooh what's that D'vik?'... ok the last were a little more challenging, but if Heppath was awake enough to be curious then at least he was too.

If anything he relished having someone as curious about life as he in such close and easy proximity. He didn't have to explain anything, exactly, rather just think about what he wanted to say and almost before he could start actually saying it Heppath would skim his thoughts and reply with another question. This whole mind reading thing was at once dazzling and bewildering, with a dash of terrifying. What if he thought the wrong things, stuff his brain to mouth filter would normally keep under wraps? There is nothing you could say that would upset me, D'vik, she would remind him, with a reassuring nudge. He supposed it was true; anything he thought about her directly was nothing but adoration, which she could hardly be opposed to, and her slightly mercurial sense of humour seemed to enjoy any disapproving thoughts that happened through his head.

Like his grumbling disapproval of being awakened again after only a couple hours of sleep. She was entirely adorable when she did it, but D'vik was just not used to such a sleep schedule. Reluctantly, he pushed her off of him and stretched, realising as he did so that he'd slept in oily clothes. She must have climbed up for a cuddle after he oiled her and they'd just fallen asleep like that.

Hurry up! Heppath added brightly, bouncing in circles, the Weyrlingmaster wants us in the common room.

"Hold up, lemme change... clothes," D'vik mumbled, leaning over and rummaging through his chest for something clean. Everything had been dumped unceremoniously into it when he had moved over from the candidate barracks, much of it spilling over the sides. He'd sort it out another time, he told himself, when he was both awake enough and Heppath wasn't being demanding, though he absentmindedly knew that it would probably take one of the Weyrlingmasters telling him directly to sort it out for anything to actually be folded neatly.

Heppath didn't wait long for him, dashing off out the door after one of her siblings when he'd gotten one leg into his trousers, rendering him unable to follow and struggling with the second even as he heard a muffled cry from around the corner and a much clearer Oof! Hey, you tripped me up! There was no sense of pain accompanying it however, D'vik heaving a sigh of relief as he finally pulled the last trouser leg up and set off.

"What have you done now?" he murmured in exasperation, picking up the disgruntled red heap off of the floor.

I tripped up on his wing, Heppath grumbled, giving the offending dragonet a baleful glare as she snuggled closer into her rider's arms.

"Well never mind, eh? Not everyone's as graceful as you straight after hatching," D'vik cooed to her quietly as he took a seat, not really paying attention to whom he sat next to. He'd definitely noticed that many of the dragonets didn't have full control of their legs and wings as of yet, many seeming to be far too long for themselves. Not the reds though, on the whole. They'd been dashing about from the moment they hatched, though Heppath did occasionally try and zoom around too fast for herself. This wasn't the first time she had tripped on something or someone.

J'ken's speech was short and not entirely unexpected. Boring enough for Heppath to decide she'd had enough time to sulk and slink off of D'vik's lap to stalk Anedaith instead. D'vik didn't pay a huge amount of attention to J'ken's lesson plan, though he tried. It would be up there for a few hours, he could come back later after all. But mingle and socialise? That he could do.

Before he'd had a chance to get up, his neighbour had spoken to him. He glanced around at Veryk to find his new roommate leaning in. "Battery," he replied without really thinking about it, quirking a grin at the other weyrling, "what about you?" He didn't really know Veryk particularly well, though he supposed that would change quickly enough with a year or more of sharing a room with him. He'd at least made an effort to remember their names early on. Veryk and Karrimuth, R'kan and Hisketh. The black certainly wouldn't be cramped for space once he grew bigger.

"Not sure we ever properly introduced ourselves. D'vik and Heppath," he added, reaching out a hand to the black weyrling. He already liked Veryk's sense of humour. Hopefully they'd get along swimmingly. Heppath ignored the introduction, instead choosing that moment to jump Anedaith and dash off around the room with an unfiltered cry of Tag, you're it!

She was just about finished with Anedaith's second wing when the red abruptly sat up, head cocking to one side as D'via dove for the oil pot before it could tumble onto the floor.

Tadriath says we are to go to the common room. She seems pleased with herself and D'via gives her a scratch behind her jaw as she wonders who Tadriath is and whether they should move. He's a big blue dragon. The emphasis is very clear and D'via frowns. Big... Is that the weyrlingmaster's dragon?

“We better go.” She says, covering the oil, glad that she was done with that so she's not being barraged by complaints of being itchy. The room is pretty full when they arrive and she selects the nearest available seat next to an older red rider. Anedaith just flops over her lap and starts to nap without a word, one wing wedged against her chest the other hanging over her legs as her tail twitches every so often.

The briefing is short and to the point, she likes that, she's already trying to remember everything she's meant to be doing. She doesn't have any questions so she glances round the room when he tells them to socialise. She has no idea what to say to any of them.

She's just edging towards panic when her lap is abruptly full of two dragons and she yelps as they roll off in a tangle of wings and tails. No fair! Anedaith says as D'via tentatively identifies Heppath before she dashes off, Anedaith close on her tail. She still has no idea how 'Daith can go from sound asleep to playing tag within moments.

And now she's been entirely abandoned. She glances at the older rider again, noticing that she's quiet which is better than some of the other weyrlings who seem to be competing for who can talk loudest. She's also glaring round as if she doesn't want to talk but maybe she just doesn't like the loud people too? “Uhhm, hello? I'm Dara. D'via,” she corrects herself quickly, “and that was Anedaith.” There. She's spoken to someone. It has to count.

J'ken answers a couple of lively questions from younger weyrlings before one of the older ones gains his attention. He quickly checks the rest of the room, most of them are doing as he's asked, though there are a few hanging back that will need watching. If they don't like company he isn't going to force it on them, as long as they can remain polite and communicate as much as they'd need to in a wing. If on the other hand they're scared or apprehensive he'll want to push them to bring them out of their shell so they don't freeze up when they're graduated and lives may depend on them being able to talk without hesitation. It may not be a problem now but you couldn't hide behind your dragon or other people in a threadfall.

He nods to the bronze rider. Thane? Thran? Thrane? The last one sounds right. He did recall their being a few riders in this batch that hadn't taken the usual honourifics - and a few that had when they'd not been planning too. If he's got it straight he's also his oldest weyrling who's sharding lucky as this was his last clutch. He seems to be a good choice for a bronze, and nice and courteous which he appreciates. Some of the bronzers can be a little obnoxious, even if he'd never tell them that.

“You can indeed have a word. Here or would you prefer to speak in private?” He says, making no suggestion either way on the topic or the location beyond making the offer. He'll hear all of the weyrlings out when they have a problem and not making a judgement before they've spoken is necessary if they are actually to bring problems to him. He nods at the bronze who sits down beside his rider, the calm only highlighted by the apparently red dragon initiated game of tag starting behind them.

Thrane politely waited to be addressed again by the weyrlingmaster's assistant, nodding as the man turned to acknowledge him. He would then nod for the door, confirming wordlessly that he preferred to speak in private. But just in case the blue rider missed it, he added in a low whisper. "Yes, I would rather speak in private... I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea." He will tip his head in the direction of his roommates, feeling the skin prickle a little. They are watching us... And they don't look too happy... His dragon said softly, keeping the communication to just his rider and J'ken.

He would wait for the older rider to check on his charges one last time before he and his bronze would follow him to his office. Theulth will politely ignore the game of tag going on behind them, secretly glad that he and his rider were getting away from the chaos he was sure would ensue.

Once they were in the privacy of the weyrlingmaster assistant's office, Thrane let out a soft sigh. "I am sorry to already be causing you problems, but for my sanity I have to ask." He will move to sit in one of the chairs so that his bronze could come and lay his head in Thrane's lap. It was a habit Theulth was fond of, since they were both aware that Theulth would all too soon be too big to be even a head-only lap dragon.

Once Theulth was settled, Thrane will look back to J'ken. " I know that you might not be able to honor my request, but would it be at all possible to change which room Theulth and I are in? I have nothing against Xaeybl, Naeharie or their dragons... But they are at a different place in their lives then I am. " He sighs again, scratching around Theulth's headknobs to give his hands something to do. "I would be grateful if I could be moved in with some of the older weyrlings in this clutch, just so I feel less out of place... It's hard to find common ground with someone you could almost have been the sire of."

He will break eye contact for a moment, Theulth quietly supporting him as he gathered his thoughts. He will look back up when he chooses his words. "I understand that I will still be expected to work with them as wingmates, and I can assure you that I shall... But in the evenings, I would prefer a barrack room that is a little calmer so that I can reflect on the day and prepare for the next. I hope you can try to understand where I am coming from." He would finish with a shy smile, trying his best to not sound like he was too old... Even though he felt like it.

Na'va listened, slightly bored, to J'ken's instructions. The schedule itself provided little more detail than what they already knew from candidacy. O'sir had prepared them for impression after all, that was sort of his whole job. The precise times weren't particularly something that Na'va found all that enthusing.

But it was a start at least to getting somewhere. She'd never slept as much or been so, lying around the Weyrling barracks with their minimal duties, while Derraseth's sleeping fogged her mind. It wasn't particularly pleasant, but they were... figuring it out. Even the single night they'd spent together felt a little more... normal this morning than it had the night before. Although it had never felt wrong, just different and a challenge that Na'va wanted to figure out sooner rather than later.

She noticed her room mate sitting in the back of the class, perfect. Back seat bandits worked perfectly fine for her image. If she had to socialise, it might as well be with the woman who already shared her quarters. Vassatiere had been a perfectly fine room mate so far, and an improvement on the hoardes of people she had to share with in candidacy. It didn't feel quite so crowded now. Moving from the seat she'd slunk into at the beginning of class, she plopped down beside her room mate.

"Hey roomie." She raised an eyebrow in greeting to the other red rider who had addressed Vass shortly before she'd got there.

Derraseth leapt lightly up onto her lap, poking nosily as things nearby, quite bored that they were just supposed to sit around a talk.

Vassatiere decided then, that the others were entirely too excitable and mobile for her. All noisy and rambunctious. It wasn’t that Vassatiere had anything against them – she knew morning people and those that had entirely too much energy – she just didn’t know what to do or say to them. Vassatiere couldn’t begin to imagine they’d have anything in common besides the fact that they’d all impressed.

Was that a basis for a conversation?

Proof enough that one of the people who sat next to her was just all over the damn place. Dragon everywhere and it was just...

You’re thinking too much, he remarked on her lap, peering at D’via. He did not have the desire to run off or away from Vassatiere, as the other red had left their bonded, and instead was too busy judging this other person.

Right. So. “Vassatiere,” she said by way of introduction, steady and clipped. She just... didn’t have anything else to add.

It was almost with some relief that she saw Na’va. Not because she was friends with Na’va, but because she... well, knew of Na’va. They were roommates, for whatever that was worth, and the woman wasn’t as excitable or quick to movement as some others might be. Better her than someone who was going to be over zealous in their desire to speak to her.

So, Vassatiere managed the faintest of smiles, which was a step in the right direction for her, and said, “Good morning,” to Na’va. That was... what people said to one another.

Ysolth, likewise, knew Derraseth. Without the risk of leaving Vassatiere’s lap, he batted at the other Red’s tail and leg. Just about whatever he could reach, playing with him.

D'via ignored the silence that stretched out from Vassatiere, that was normal, she could never think of anything to say that was actually worth saying. Though it would have been nice to know her dragons name but she'd find out eventually.

She gave the new rider a half smile as she arrived, unsure if she should be leaving or not since they seemed to be room mates, but a glance at the rest of the room convinced her that here was still the better choice. “D'via, and Anedaith who won't stay still.” She said to the newcomer before giving a small shrug. “I don't know what to say so can we just pretend to be talking so I don't have to go over to them?” She finally asked with another glance over her shoulder.

Anedaith peeled her way out of the crowd with an inquiring chirp and D'via realised her unease must have finally gotten noticed. “I'm fine, you keep playing if you want to.” She said, willing herself to believe it enough that Anedaith would believe it too.

If you are sure. Anedaith said slowly before looking at the other two reds. Do you want to play tag?

It was difficult to reconcile that he’d had Hisketh for such a short time. Before Impressing, R’kan would have thought the first morning after Impression would be disorienting, as he realized all over again that there was a new presence in his head that he’d have for the rest of his life. Rather than that, though, it had just felt right; it had taken the darling little Red insistently telling him that she needed fed again to really get him out of bed. Even seeing the shapes of other people in the room wasn’t really unusual, since Candidacy had mandated roommates too. These were different ones, but nothing new beyond that.

Nevertheless, it made him a bit wistful to think someday he and Hisketh would have a weyr all to themselves. R’kan had never really known what that was like. He’d always had to share space, and often hand-me-down belongings from his older brothers since he was so much younger. But things would be different now, and not just because of his dragon.

The rest of the day had largely consisted of more feedings, oiling Hisketh’s itchy patches, and naps. No matter that he’d gotten more than a full night of sleep at the end of the previous day, he still felt exhausted. No doubt that was her influence, his Red bonded’s own post-hatching sleepiness bleeding over into him still. For someone like R’kan, who was usually full of restless energy, it was almost a relief that he didn’t have to be awake without her.

Getting summoned for their first official meeting as weyrlings had been its own brand of interesting… until R’kan realized that there wasn’t much to it. Their dragonets were still too young to be taught anything meaningful, so not having a solid plan for now did make sense… but that didn’t disappoint him any less. The entire world had seemed to open up around him the moment he Impressed to Hisketh. Having to wait now to begin his actual education as a rider was excruciating.

Leaning back in the chair he’d claimed, R’kan propped his feet on the desk and tucked his hands behind his head. Might as well get comfortable given they were being left to chat now while J’ken dealt with whatever the Bronzer wanted. Shifting on his lap, Hisketh curled up once again so that she was better balanced, tail absently flicking as she watched the other Reds running. But at least for now, she had no interest in taking part. Instead, she greeted the next nearest dragonet with a mild, Good evening, the same moment R’kan addressed their rider: “I don’t think I caught your name.”

Spoiler for OOC:
Whoever wants to be the pair they’re talking to, bring it on. Figured it’d be a good way for someone else to jump in if they wanted. :D

Tread carefully next time.

A petty display of dominance, his dragon said, low and tightly constrained. The claw had missed Nicynth, and the green had bounded on, which was probably most of the reason Liorith hadn't thrown down the challenge and fought another black so soon after fighting the first. Naeharie bit his bottom lip hard, feeling briefly but entirely sick, unwilling to look at the black rider in charge of the dragon, thinking about the rakes down Liorith's side. He repeated, They're not that frightening.

They were, but that was immaterial. Naeharie felt the name slot into his mind, Karrimuth. This black seemed, at least, less overwhelmingly horrid as the one he had seen on the Sands--but there truly were no good ones, were there? Tread carefully next time, a black smoke whisper, hissing, swiping, cursing his sister. A silvery pall of eager tooth, this vicious hunter, this Karrimuth.

Feet forward, Liorith said gently. He had been telling Naeharie this a lot since hatching, so short a time ago. Naeharie had been taking a lot of shambling steps forward. It was exhausting.

But they had a lesson to reach. And then they had a roommate to stalk. To tell the truth, Naeharie was terrified of him, as well. He hated to think that he might be off to stir up trouble for them; what could have happened over the course of one evening? What could he have done? Perhaps Naeharie had screamed in his sleep. Perhaps Thrane was letting the weyrlingmaster know that he was unsettled, deranged. But Xaeybl hadn't indicated he'd done anything too odd. He hadn't screamed in a while.

He really wished Xaeybl could have championed their cause, but somehow they had been noticed. Naeharie had light feet and a good head for hiding in crowds; but he supposed his dear Xaeybl and excitable Nik were less equipped for stealth.

He gave Xaeybl and Nik a forlorn look, exaggerating his frown slightly, and glanced pointedly down to their feet. Focusing on this might keep his mind off whatever fate had in store for them in J'ken's office.

"I guess it was." Na'va shrugged in response to Vassatiere's greeting. They hadn't been much for words so far which suited her just fine. She did, however, enjoy D'via's words. "Works for me, but you know, we could probably just leave... He did." Na'va jerked her head in the direction of the door that J'ken and Thrane had left through.

Derraseth did consider Anedaith's offer, cocking his head at her with a penetrating stare. Eventually, the other red received a Nope in response. It had been nice of the other red to offer, but with two of them already careening around the room, he didn't particularly feel like blending in with them.

Na'va raised an eyebrow questioningly at Derraseth. Well, they've made themselves very obvious haven't they? While she didn't precisely know how she understood what he was getting at, she did. A little different from Na'va's own want to just do whatever everyone else didn't, Derraseth seemed to just want to keep others on their toes. She was down with that too.

Instead, he enjoyed playing his quiet game of cat and mouse with Ysolth. Both of them could sit comfortably in their bonded's laps, but Derraseth would dangle his tail and attempt to pull it out of the way before Ysolth could reach it. He squirmed a few times when he misjudged Ysolth's speed, causing Na'va to hiss at him to digging his claws into her, but Derraseth just hissed lovingly back at her before continuing his game with Ysolth.

"Tresspassing" Veryk purred with a sly smile, happy that their roomate seemed inclined to play along. It wasn't wholly inaccurate either, technically by indulging in the weyrlife since arriving, as opposed to focussing on craft and hold was the reason they'd ended up a candidate. They did exhale softly through their nose at the introduction, pausing ever so slightly before taking the offered hand in a soft grip. Had they been standing, they would have been inclined to cutsey, the continuing smile tugging at the corner of their mouth as if they had a secret D'vik didn't know about.

"Veryk of Karrimuth. Though I'm sure we managed names if nothing else before our dragons dragged us to sleep." they teased, retrieving their hand from his to brush their hair back behind their ear before bringing it back to the table and resting their chin in their hand.

They regarded D'vik from their vantage point, though their features did not give away too much, glancing for a moment to the red that had darted away to play tag with one of its clutchmates. "You're the twin, aren't you?" they asked, their voice soft but easy to hear at such proximity. All attention was for the red weyrling now, intense perhaps, if one did not enjoy that sort of thing.

"Karrimuth is a twin too." They added smile growing wider at the black dragon's response to that specific concept. It wasn't entirely untrue. All the hatchlings from the one clutch were technically siblings in the way twins would be, but they referred more to the black dragon that had hatched almost exactly when Karrimuth had. To make their entrance into the world at roughly the same time while sharing the same hide colour had to make them more twin-like than others. Though the same could be said to the reds who all hatched at just about the same time.

Karrimuth was idly listening in, responding to the comment about the sibling that stumbled over him on hatching being more than just a clutchmate earning Veryk a huffy rebuke. More importantly, however, was the desire to not be stepped on when one of the reds who occupied the room he slept in started running around. Keep your games away from me, Heppath he warned, sliding his tail closer to his body just in case it proved too tempting for the playing dragons.

Vassatiere wasn’t sure how she felt being between two people who were having a conversation, but it wasn’t so bad since she knew one of them and it wasn’t really a conversation if they were just exchanging a few words, was it?

Ysolth was quite content with his little game because it meant he could stay right where he was and, really, it required a fair bit of concentration, skill, and coordination. The best games of all. He didn’t feel as antisocial as his Vassatiere, but he also was near violently determined to stay with her. She was his, after all.

When Na’va made mention that someone had left, she did frown. “I think the implication is that we’re supposed to stay, and get to know... one another?” Her words were a little rough, clearly disproving of someone who had just walked out even though she certainly didn’t want to stay. She didn’t want to get in trouble even more and she certainly didn’t want to seem like a lazy person, or slacker. Neither did she think pretending was a viable option.

Which meant, well, she had to talk to them. Looking down at Ysolth on her lap, she ran a hand along his back before she said, “There’s no reason we can’t just talk to eachother.” It sounded snippy. Vassatiere certainly didn’t mean it that way, she just frequently sounded that way when her words came out quick and clipped.

It was just her way.

Counter to her supposed waspish statement, she looked at Na’va and asked, “Do you have family at the Weyr?” It was a safe question, generally. A normal one. Right? She glanced at D’via and hoped the other girl would understand the question was also posed to her.

J'ken had thought that might be what was going to be asked, which was why he made the offer to speak in private. Rooms were very carefully selected, despite how it might appear. Candidates that already didn't get along had to be assessed and in some cases thrown together and in others kept apart. It was a balancing act in making the weyrlings work together and stopping any fights that would distress the dragons.

He had to flick through his notes to find Thrane's roommates, another bronze whose rider was fifteen and a green with a thirteen year old. Younger as he said, yes, but they weren't the excitable reds who might actually drive him out.

“They are younger yes,” J'ken agreed as he grabbed another chair so he wasn't looming, “however they are at the exact same point in their life right now.” He paused, putting his notes back on the table. “It doesn't matter whether you are twelve or twenty, right now you're weyrlings.”

This was perhaps one of the biggest things to adjust to and why the first month was still light on training, with most of it going to be ettiquette and protocol, which would incidentally help with the adjustment. “Whatever you may have been before, Theolth is what defines you now.”  He gestured at the bronze. “He will determine what you can be. It might be for you to work for things, but he has given you your place. You are a bronze rider. Getting along with your wingmates during drills will be the very least of the skills you need. Theolth will rise when he's of age to catch the Queens. If he catches Kalestath for example, will you actually care for all your riders as people? Will you interact with them and understand them? Or will you be a distant weyrleader that only interacts when he absolutely has to? Speaking as a wingrider, I can assure you that does make a difference.”

J'ken smiled, trying to take the sting out of the rebuke. “Learning to be a good leader starts now. You say you have nothing in common with them because they are younger. Talk to them and find something in common. If nothing else you are all dragon riders now. There are very few reasons to change rooms around, one night of cohabitation is not one of them. Remember the friendlier you are, the more likely they are to accommodate you.”

He stands back up, “I'll have to return in case anyone else has questions or wishes to talk to me. I would suggest you go back and talk too but I will not force you to interact, only highly recommend it.”

Anedaith didn't seem perturbed by the negative response as she dashed off again. “She's going to just drop into sleep soon.” She said fondly, and with a hint of exasperation. Vassatiere and Na'va seem to have got dragons that behaved as expected. Her dragon didn't seem to have any setting in between sleep and dashing around with a curiousity the candidate lessons had suggested wouldn't be there for a few months. Or maybe she'd just get more curious...

The weyrlingmaster had left with another weyrling and so she shrugged. “I think they'll be back. I mean, I wouldn't want to ask something here.” Too many people just listening in and she'd be too worried about what they'd be thinking. She'd probably ask him if they could go somewhere a little more private too.

She hoped the glance was meant to mean Vassatiere wanted to know if she had family too as she decided to answer anyway. “My twin D'vik impressed too.” She said, unable to stop the grin that spread across her face. “He's the only real family I have left.”

He’s very high strung, Nicynth observed of her black sibling as she barreled on past, Do you think he needs a hug? Hugs, she had quickly discovered, were the best; she suspected they could solve most, if not all, problems when properly given.

I doubt he’d appreciate it, Xaeybl cautioned, more amused than worried. She didn’t have the same unease of blacks as Naeharie, but she had enough self awareness to know that the temperamental little dragonets needed to be handled carefully lest they find themselves at odds, and they really didn’t need to get into an altercation with one of their wingmates right off. If it came to it, though, Xaeybl was going for the rider; she might not be able to stop a raging dragon, but she could definitely stop a person.

Liorith will protect us, Nicynth assured Xaeybl and Naeharie, sensing her readiness and his unease. She’d pretty much completely missed the underlying tension, but she was quick to offer support regardless.

They settled in, and watched as their roomate wandered off with the assistant weyrlingmaster to discuss the matter of his unrest. Xaeybl clucked in displeasure, feeling rather cross that the conversation had moved out of the room and out of their hearing; she liked to know when someone had a problem with her up front, though she couldn’t imagine what either Naeharie, she, or their dearlings, could have done in barely a day of rooming together to cause issue. Maybe she was overthinking it, and all he wanted was another pillow or something.

I was quiet! Nicynth whined as she registered Naeharie’s look, and Xaeybl soothed a hand over the smooth hide of her head.

“Guilt drew their eye,” she assured her dragon, though she quirked a smile and shrug at Naeharie. Stealth was not their speciality, she was well aware, but their differences just made them a better team; Naeharie dealt with subterfuge, and she handled the full-frontal assault.

“What next?” she mused to her companions, looking around the room to see if there was anyone she didn’t know.

Nicynth perked up with an excited chirp, looking around the room to survey her siblings. Oh! Hm! Let’s see.

He should have known it would come to this. Speaking to other humans had never done Naeharie a whole lot of good, and his voicebox's most programmed phrases were probably unsuited for the current milieu. Perhaps he should practice something? His tongue twisted around a benign and banal hello and immediately swallowed it, unvoiced and tasteless. He looked at Xaeybl and cheerfully pantomimed slitting his own throat.

Unslit your throat immediately.

Naeharie repositioned two fingers as his weapon and drew them across his neck in the opposite direction, and smiled guilelessly at his dragon. Liorith nodded approvingly, and then joined Nicynth in scoping out their likeliest companions. Naeharie could feel Liorith's desire to properly socialize him, but to the dragon's credit, he seemed to want to slowly tip-toe Naeharie out into the water, rather than wholesale toss him in.

There seem to be some nice young women gathered over there, Liorith said to Nicynth.

D'vik made a mock-shocked face when Veryk replied, as if the black weyrling's claim was so much more scandalous than his own. "Naughty," he added, tone of voice matching his expression, before following up Veryk's sly grin with one of his own.

"Pretty sure we did, but it never hurts to double check. 'Specially considering how dog-tired we all were last night." There it was again, that sly grin on the black weyrling's face. As if he were indulging in some sort of private joke. It only served to make D'vik all the more curious. Maybe he could winkle it out. Maybe not. But they'd be roommates for the better part of the next two turns, chances are he'd find out eventually, whatever it was. He likely as not wouldn't care what it was when he did find out, D'vik was more concerned with the pursuit than the goal.

The two of them regarded each other curiously (or at least D'vik was curious, he couldn't make Veryk's expression out and it was bugging him), before Veryk spoke again.

"That I am," he answered proudly, glancing at D'via to make sure she was alright, but now watching Veryk subtly for any hint of disapproval that the other weyrling may show toward his sister. I there was any, he couldn't find it before the weyrling continued. "Technically they're all twins, aren't they," he replied thoughtfully, running over in his head what the term for that many babies together would be. It certainly wasn't 'twins'. Triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, sex- sept- oct- non- dec... dodec? No, that was 12. Surely it would be something beginning with tri...

He gave up, realising that he'd been muttering some of that out loud. He shrugged. Useless feeling sheepish about his ramblings. "I'd like to think Heppath is a twin of sorts with Anedaith though. They must have hatched about the same time, didn't see it though, and they both came running up to us together and Impressed near as shard-it the same time too." He smiled fondly, turning to watch the pair of them as they zoomed around the desks together, before Anedaith paused to regard two of her red siblings. Probably trying to encourage them to join the game too, no doubt.

Heppath too stopped, waiting for an answer from the other two reds before Karrimuth's disgruntled voice drew her attention. She turned her head to the black with a look that could only be described as disdain. If you're going to be like that, I don't want to play with you anyway, she replied with a flick of her head, nudging Anedaith with a Come on, we don't need them to have fun, glad to follow Anedaith back into their game.

D'vik frowned just the tiniest bit as he followed the little reds thoughts, still so very unfiltered but at the least not still projecting to everyone else in the room like when she hatched. He turned back to Veryk, having traced the source of Heppath's ire back to his black, regarding the black for a few seconds as he spoke.

"He's not into the whole rough and tumble thing, is he?" he asked, thinking about how that was going to work with Heppath sharing a room with him. It wouldn't do to upset their roommate who was very quickly going to get much larger than Heppath would ever be. Besides, he liked Veryk so far, it was as much in his interest to have a congenial relationship with his roommates as it was for her to. "Don't worry, I'll try keep tabs on her," he added, with what he hoped was a reassuring grin at the black weyrling. It may just be that he had to discourage her more playful moments while they were all in the one room together. Once outside in the common areas, he was sure she'd be able to hunt another playmate out. That was if weyrling training didn't exhaust her first, of course. One could always hope.
